What is your email? It might be easier to correspond that way.

A couple of things you need to know. There were 2 Pinkney Berryhills that were born around the same time and both are buried in Elmwood. I am a descendant of Pinkney Berryhill who married Mary Anne Taylor in Cabarrus County. He was born 01 Apr 1827 and died 27 Dec 1906. He is buried in Elmwood. I can give you all the information I have on him. I also have information on the other one if you would like.

Matt

My ancestor is Jonathan Gage born in Tennessee in 1799. He married an Elizabeth and throughout his life lived closely amidst the Berryhill and Harris families in Marion County, Alabama and on to Cherokee County, TX where he died in 1860. I suspect Jonathan's wife was a Berryhill, but have not been able to prove it. Do any of you Berryhill's have information on Jonathan Gage?
Thanks,
Donna in Victoria, TX

Hi,
Lannes Moncey Berryhill was my grandfather on my mother's side of the family. His 2nd wife, Dora Lee Burnett, was my grandmother. They had two daughters from this union. They were Annie Gertrude Berryhill and Myrtle Viola Berryhill. They were both placed in the Juliette Fowler Orphan Home in Dallas about 1905 and were adopted a few months later. Annie was adopted by Adam Wiseman and wife of Clarendon and my mother, Viola, was adopted by J.B. & Laura Davis Mobley of Lubbock. If you have more information on Lawrence Lee Berryhill's family I would love to share what I have.

My information has been handed down to me by my mother and her half brothers & sister and their cousins.

I am trying to find information on the parents of both William M. Berryhill and Betsey Berryhill. According to Mecklenburg County, NC records they were married on August 23, 1820. The source notes Isaac Alexander as a witness. Please post any information if you think it would help.
Thanks.

I have found conflicting information in posts, publications, etc. regarding these 3 Berryhill brothers.

Some have claimed that William Allison Berryhill is a son of Samuel C. Berryhill and Elizabeth Rodden.

I believe these three brothers were sons of William M. Berryhill & Betsy Berryhill.

I have lots of information on Pinkney Berryhill and am happy to share it.
I want information on James W. Berryhill born 1802/03 in Georgia. He was married to Mary 1840 it is to be blieved (peelar)as a last name for her. She was younger than him so she may have been the second wife not record of that. James was a wagon maker/ farmer. He had sons named James, Andrew, Hilamon, Francis, Frank, George, William, John, daughter Heniretta and Marietta(nicknamed Mary). They live in Cherokee county woodstock 1870 and in Roswell in 1880. I was sad to see that Hilmon was listed as a Mill worker at age 10. I want to know who is James Berryhill's father?

Berryhills in Jefferson County GA

I have two Berryhill in Jefferson County GA that I would like to connect to other Jefferson County Berryhill families.

First my 2nd great grandparents were, Aquilla M. Farrow/Farrer and Susan Berryhill. Aquilla was the son of James H Farrow & Mary [--?--], born in Jefferson County on 10 Apr 1834. He married Susan Berryhill on 26 Oct 1856 in Jefferson County. The only other record for both of them in Jefferson County was the 1860 census.

Quilla Farrer, 26, M, Well Driller, Georgia
Susan Farrer, 26, F, Georgia
Joshua Farrer, 1, M, Georgia
Noah Farrer, 1, M, Georgia

Ancestry Image # 6
Printed Pg # 55
Written Pg # 389
Dwelling # 384, Family # 384

six families away was mother & siblings
Mary A. Farrer, 49, F, Seamstrip, VRE $300, VPE $200, Georgia
William J. H, Farrer, 19, M, Farm Laborer, Georgia
Eveline A Farrer, 15, F, Georgia

Ancestry Image # 5
Printed Pg # 54
Written Pg # 388
Dwelling # 378, Family # 378

I found a reference to Susan, Mary, Catherine Farrer and Harriet Scruggs on the Jefferson County Salt List where they received a ration of Salt given to mother, wives, and widows of Confederate Soldiers. I am not sure when or where Susan Berryhill Farrer died. Aquilla's 2nd wife was Frances Johnson and their 1st child, Albert Washington Farrer was born in 1872 DeKalb County, AL.

Aquilla Farrow/Farrer had 6 siblings;
1. Garvin Hamilton Farrow/Farrer born in Jefferson County 4 Nov 1827 and died during the civil war in VA on 23 Sep 1864. He married Sarah Jane Johnson who remarried a Smith.
2. Catherine F. Farrow born 24 Nov 1829, died before the 1840 census.
3. Harriet P Farrow was born 7 Feb 1832 in Jefferson County. Harriet 1st married Isaac B. Davis in Jefferson County on 16 Feb 1851. Isaac died 21 Mar 1856. I never found her 2nd marriage record but her 2nd husband was William G. Scruggs in1856 and 1858. Aquilla was buried in the family plot of one of their son's John D. Scruggs.
4. Sarah E. Farrow born 19 Jun 1838. It is presumed that she died before the 1840 census as she is not found with the family.
5. William J. Harrison Farrow/Farrer born in Jefferson County on 9 Oct 1840. He same home on leave during the civil war with measels and died at home the same day that his wife gave birth to their daughter 20 Mar 1862. I am told by his descendants that he was buried in the Mathews-Weeks Cemetery but I am not aware if there is a tombstone.
6. My 2nd Berryhill connection is throught Eveline Ann Farrow/Farrer born 27 Apr 1843 in Jefferson County. Some time between Aquilla's return from the civil war and May 1868 Eveline moved from Jefferson County GA to Barbour County AL. I doubt that Eveline would have moved without her mother and the patriarch of the family, her big brother Aquilla. On 30 May 1868 she married Levine C. Berryhill. Levine was the son of John S. Berryhill and Sarah McGane. John & Sarah not only lived in Jefferson County but were married there on 4 Nov 1818 in Jefferson County, GA.

On 22 Jul 1825 Aquilla's parents, James & Mary Farrow were married. Both the Farrer & Berryhill families lived in Jefferson County in 1830 and may have known each other. Some time between the 1830 & 1840 census, the John Berryhill family moved to Stuart County, GA. In the late 1840 they moved to Barbour County, AL.

US Federal Census
After 1 Jun 1840
Stewart County, Georgia, USA

Berryhill, John,
Males: 1- 0 to 5, 1- 5 to 10, 1- 10 to 15, 1- 40 to 50
Females: 1- 0 to 5, 2- 5 to 10, 1- 10 to 15, 2- 15 to 20, 1- 30 to 40

Ancestry Image 1,
Written pg 1,
Printed page 107(A)

In the 1850 census they were in Barbour Co, AL.

7th US Federal Census
12 Nov 1850
Barbour County, Alabama, USA

Berryhill, John, 54, M, W, Farmer, NC
Berryhill, Sarah, 45, F, W, Geo
Covington, Elizabeth, 24, F, W, Geo
Covington, Emily, 5, F, W, Geo
Covington, Mary, 3, F, W, Geo
Covington, Jeremiah, 1, M, W, Geo
Berryhill, Isabella, 23, F, W, Geo
Berryhill, Nancy, 18, F, W, Geo
Berryhill, John, 15, M, W, Geo
Berryhill, (Mary) Jane, 13, F, W, Geo
Berryhill, Henry, 10, M, W, Geo
Berryhill, Thomas, 7, M, W, Geo
Berryhill, Levine, 5, M, W, Geo
Berryhill, Frances, 2, F, W, Ala

Written Pg 431
Printed Pg 216
Ancestry Image 217

John Berryhill died between 1850 & 1857.

In the 1860 census his wife and family is still in the Barbor County, AL

8th US Federal Census
22 Sep 1860
Texasville, Barbour County, Alabama, USA

Sarah Berryhill, (McGane), 55, F, W, $320, $200, GA
Nancy Berryhill, 28, F, W, GA
Henry Berryhill, 21, M, W, GA
Thomas Berryhill, 17, M, W, GA
Levine C. However I found early 1870 church, land, and property tax records in Dekalb County, AL.

I suspect that Aquilla's wife Susan Berryhill and Eveline's husband Levine Berryhill were related. I just don't know how. I wish I knew parents of John S. Berryhill born about 1796 in North Carolina. He lived in Jefferson County GA from no later than 1818 when he married Sarah McGane to the 1830's. They lived in Stewart County GA from the 1830 to late 1840. During or before they moved across the Alabama state line into Barbour County AL. John S. Berryhill died between 1850 and 1857.

I have some ties via marriage to the Berryhill family including Pleasant Luther Berryhill. He was b abt 1800 in Creek Nation East(Ga). He married Martha Wright 12/28/1823 and moved to Okla I.T. Following her death he also m Winnie ? abt 1845. A son of Pleasant and Martha was named Robert Berryhill b 1831 in Ok I.T. Robert m Elsie ? They had a son Harrison Logan Berryhill b 1871 and d 1930ish in Okmulgee Ok. Harrison m Bettie and had 4 children. One of these children is still alive named Martha and was written up this week in the Tulsa World as one of the only living members of the Dawes Roll. She still lives in Okmulgee. Harrison then m Cecelia (Celia) Freeman..granddaughter of Chief Samuel Checotah..for which a town is named in Okla. Harrison had 9 children with Celia Freeman...of which one is your grandmother Elsie...who married Douglas. I have seen Dawes card info on Martha Berryhill stepsister to Elsie..and it lists father as full blood. Same info could be found on Celia Freeman b 1/12/1891 in Ok I.T. and d 10/1987 in Okmulgee. Elsies birth certificate should help confirm all info you are seeking with above Dawes info etc.I also have obits mentioning your grandmother, and siblings including the stepsister Martha still living.

They are my 3rd great grandparents. I would very much be interested in the Berryhill Book. Does it go back to the Darrisaw/Durouzeaux connection?

Benjamin Weeks-Wife Elizabeth/Burke County Georgia

There and three camps of researchers regarding Elizabeth (Betty), wife of Aquilla Matthews. The Matthews researchers believe she was Elizabeth (Betty) Sharpe. The Weeks researchers believe she was Elizabeth Weeks. The Berryhill researchers are just camped out! (Probably in some dark swamp in Perquirmans waiting for Mary? and Benjamin to show up with a flashlight and a road map of Georgia).

It's a good day when we can reconcile at least the Matthews and Weeks into one camp. I have a copy of the deed that Aquilla Matthews signed when he sold his inheritance to his brother John on July 16, 1786 and proved 20 January, 1794. (If you would like a copy let me know and I'll send it. (jimhmaddox@msn.com)

The deed refers several times to the wife of Aquilla as "Betty Sharp". She signs the deed as "Betty Matthews". We know that that "Sharpe" was her middle name and Weeks was her maiden name. This apparently is the reason for the Matthews researchers to identify her as "Betty Sharpe". Sharpe was her middle name just as her granddaughter was Bathsheba Sharpe Matthews who became Bathsheba Sharpe Farmer.

As for the Berryhill researchers who are perpetuating this myth; it's time time to replace the batteries in your flashlight and quit misleading folks and casting doubt on the rest of your research. When you have three families (Aquilla and William Matthews and Benjamin Weeks) who are neighbors in Culpeper County and who leave Culpeper and arrive in Georgia within walking distance of each other and whose families share most of their first names and three of the family names (Alderson, Linsfield, and Sharpe), its time to see the light and start helping to research the Weeks/Sharpe families.

If, on the other hand, you have any credible evidence to the contrary; please post it so all of us can evaluate it. The only thing I can see is the coincidence that the family of Samuel Weeks of Hancock/Greene/Putname counties and the family of Benjamin Weeks of Burke/Jefferson/Richmond counties, just happened to move to Franklin County, Tennessee at about the same time.

Good luck with your continued research and I hope you join me in trying to continue the Weeks/Sharpe research.

Jim
Sadie A. BERRYHILL DuVALL - Kansas City, MO - 1913

"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Monday, February 17, 1913

LOST $7,500 IN THE FLOOD.

Dr. John F. DuVALL, 65 years old, died of apoplexy Saturday
afternoon at his home, 1408 Garfield Avenue. Doctor DuVALL
had practiced here since 1903, when he lost his home in
Armourdale {Kansas City, KS} and $7,500 in cash in the flood.
The home had been occupied only one night. The money had
been drawn from the bank to make a payment on property
purchased by the doctor on Garfield Avenue. When he reached
his office after the flood the cigar box containing the money had
been washed away.

Doctor DuVALL was born in Waynesburg, Pa.
Re: BERRYHILL/ HAGEWOOD

I am also looking for Martha Eufema Berrhill's parents. However I have her listed as being married to Henry W. Haigwood according to the 1850 census in Texas. Can't read the county but by other sourses it was near Waco Tx. This is the side of my grandmother Arminda, Daughter of Martha Jane, daughter of Martha Eufema Berryhill. I am related to the Berryhill's on the Bittle side, Which Arminda's second marriage was to Jacob Bittle whom his mother was Mary Marina Berryhill. She is of the Georgia's Berryhill's that was moved to Okla before the trail of tears and was a part of the beginning of it. I know Martha Eufema is also a part of the same Berryhill's just can't find her!
Contact me direct at blueyedndn@comcast.net
Flo
