Hello Bud!
My name is Caryn Christensen and I have a decorative plate that I'm wondering if it came from Peter Bertelson...
On the front of the plate is printed "A Morning Prayer" by Robert Lewis Stevenson. ON the back of the plate it says, "Compliments P.BERTELSON, Kenmare N.D."
This plate was given to me by my father-in-law, given to him by his parents who lived in MN. Evidently it was given to them by a merchant long ago. I think it might be Peter Bertelson. Do you know what kind of business Peter owned? If in fact it is from him, I'm wondering if you would be interested in having it(free of charge) back in the family?
Please let me know.

Our histories match! There is a relation here! This is really nice to find out. I wanted to let you know about a few things you posted in your last post/last paragraph.

** Ruth may have been a misprint, or a sister-in-law. Not sure where that connection came in. But I have that obit in a family bible. It said she died in 1968 (I think that was the date I remember her telling me earlier...by the way, this is Leanne's daughter, Delaine.) and was listed in teh Fargo obit as Mrs. Bertelson (no 1st name listed but she went by “Grandma Doodie”- likely short for Dorothy, but (Leanne) can’t recall, just that it wasn't Ruth.

Doodie was my mom's (Leanne's) great grandmother, married to Mort. Her obit also said she was married to "Martin" (Morton) Bertelson (incorrect spelling that was noted as a mistake in the family bible but not sure how it was noted in the Fargo paper, or even that it was.) As far as mom knows Mort (the younger) was only married once, to Mary Louise, and Mary Jane is adopted. Mary Jane is Leanne's aunt.

So no information on who Mary Jane's father was? Or on the stage name Mary Sullivan?? This is the key to what I am looking for on behalf of my mom (Leanne). Thanks for your help! And it's nice to meet you!!!

Hi – I was looking over the Morton Bertelson Descendents Message Board Sunday evening after not visiting it for a long time and saw a new posting, And, I got excited since my first posting was over a dozen years ago and I’ve learned a lot since then. Today I would post it as Morten Bertelsen as that is the spelling he used in his later days, and he was the grand father of the Morton Bertelson who was Leanne’s grandfather, thus your great great grandfather. Morten and most of his family came here in 1876 on the Anchoria docking in New York and traveling to Willmar, Minnesota where their oldest daughter and son had gone before them. The early years were very tough as the grasshoppers were ever so present. They got here just before Bertha, their oldest daughter, got married and soon moved to Ortonville, Minnesota. Two years after their arrival their youngest child Pauline was born.

Peter, your great grandfather, became a very successful merchant. He very early in life he became a store owner with his brother-in-law N. G. Anderson. With-in five plus years the partnership was dissolved and Peter went it alone. By this time Morten owned his half section of land and was farming while living in Willmar. In the 1900 Census Morten and his wife Sanne had a house full. Three of their children and their partners were living with them along with four grand children. What is going on? With-in the year they had all moved to Seattle, Washington and shortly after that Peter sold his Ortonville business, bought rites to a bag holder and sold it as he travled out to Seattle to look over the situation. Came back to Ortonville and built a bowling alley for the winter of 1901. The spring of 1902 he traveled to Minot, North Dakota, but didn’t listen to the rumors and bought the Swenson farm and Trading Post and platted the village of McKinney on the Mouse River as it wound its way back into Canada. He became a silent partner with his brother Bert, my gran’pa, in the coal mining business. 1904 saw the Mouse flood like never before in memory of the Indians in the area, and destroyed the grain Pete had been storing for spring sale. Bert bought his silent partner out and Pete refurbished his store. The following year he bought the Big Store in Kenmare kept the McKinney store open and supplied branches in Patterson while it lasted and Edson, both farm stores, along with stores in Norma and Greene.
He was killed in a tragic tractor accident in the spring of 1912. Morton was just over fourteen and a half.

Morton’s obituary that appeared in the Minot Daily News 17 Dec.1964 indicated his wife was Ruth Bigelow. I accepted this until after reading Leanne’s thread, and then checking the !930 Census. Since Morton’s mother-in-law is living with them Bigelow is probably the correct last name for Mary Louise. It looks like Mary Louise brought a child with her when they married in 1923 as Mary Jane was about six. He must have adopted her as she is listed as his daughter.
.
Hi,
I don't think I can help. In the case of Kathryn Bertelson her husband Clarence Carroll had an Aunt, Anne Therese Carroll who married PJ Sullivan in Dubuque and also she had an uncle John Carroll who married Sarah Clark in Dubuque. There is a letter dated 1939 from Loretta Sullivan to a Louise about family history but we don't know who was the Louise. Well probably no connection.. Just coincidental. I would imagine if you could go back to Denmark records you might find a connection between the families. If I run accross anything I will send info...

Hi! Decided to do some family digging and found this thread. Rather exciting since our family name is nearly gone. I am Leanne Carol LeClair (married name). My grandfather was Morton Kimbal Bertelson, married to Mary Louise. Their daughter Anne Louise is my mother. Further help to my family tree might be the following names: My uncle was Peter Bertelson (Anne's brother). Anne's uncles were Harold, Paul, Wesley, and Owen and her aunt was Hope. I was born in 1948 in Fresno, California and moved back to Minot with my sister Linda Louise and Mom in the early 50's.
I am actually looking for information on my grandmother, Mary Louise. I am unsure of her maiden name, but she was a stage actress in the 20's using the name "Mary Sullivan". She was asked at one time to be a part of the "talkies" by Boris Karloff and declined the offer because she was starting a family.
Anything anyone has on her or additional info on my Bertelson family would be wonderful!
Thank you, Leanne
PS. I have a small metal sign from the Bertelson Department store in Kenmare. It's quite a sentimental piece of history for me.

Bertel Bertelson from Denmark was first married to Kathryn Marie Songenfrei. We know they had one daughter, Kathryn M. Bertelson, born 12 June 1890 in Primghar, Iowa. Kathryn died early?? and then on 11 November 1906 in Primghar, O'Brien County, Iowa, Bertel ( a very prosperous farmer by 1906 ) married Carrie Lausten ( also might be written as Lewiston ). Later the daughter, Kathryn married Clarence Raphael Carroll ( born 1888 ) in January 1909. They later had three daughters, one, Gale or Gayle born in Iowa in 1921 and two twins, Bonnie June and Bettie Jean born in Pasadena in 1927. I have been trying to research this family in California but so far have not made much progress. One of the twins, not sure which, was in one of the Shirley Temple movies...

Looking for more information on the Bertel Bertelsen side of the family. All that I know is that he was a house painter and played many different instruments. He and Cathrine had 3 daughters: Gerda, Ingeborg, and Johanna?. Gerda emigrated on her own to Wisconsin in about 1904. She married Magnus Grant in about 1908 and had one child: Roald Norman Grant. Gerda died in October 1964 in Madison, WI.

Both Bertel and Cathrine died in Denmark, but I do not know the dates.

Ingeborg became an actress in Europe (know as BB) and eventually moved to Madison, WI to live with her sister, Gerda, where she died in 1977.

Johanna or Joanna remained in Denmark and married a Suer. Her son, Ole became a ballet dancer.

Trying to find out more about this family.

Thanks for any help.

Ingrid Kirschbaum
Morton Bertelson came to the Wilmar area in MN from Denmark in 1876. I know nothing of his brothers or sisters. He and his wife Sinna Paulson had 9 children (10 but one died in infancy.) Several of them later lived in the Ortonville area in Big Stone County, with 3 of them moving to Kenmare, ND in Ward Co. (up in the goose neck) and were there for about 11 or 12 years. My grandfather Bert (Bertel) was one of them. His older brothers Peter and Chris also lived in the area. Peter was a leading merchant in Kenmare and was killed in a tradgic tractor accident in 1912. My grandfater and his family returned to Ortonville within a year and finally moved to Minneapolis.

Vemark is a name I have found, but have been unable to locate it as yet. Sure would be great to find a cousin online. Some of the given names seem to sort of fit too. While writing this message got a phone call from a 2nd cousin who has been to the home place in Denmark, and she tells me the name was originally spelled Berthelsen. This was the spelling on the manifest which she found in Denmark, but she has recently moved and it's packed away in one of the 30 boxes she hasn't opened yet.

Bertel, If we are kin, You have a bunch of cousins on line and I will share them with you. Our Bertelson was originally Bertelsen. Mads Bertelsen came from Ulland, Denmark. He brought his wife, son and daughter. Stayed in US until about 1905 and then went back to his motherland of Denmark to die. He is buried in Greisdal Ville Denmark.

On my father's side of the family, a great-great-aunt of mine, Bertha, married an Oskar Bertelson. The two of them settled in Crookston, MN. Her maiden name (and my maiden name) was Asseln. Does anyone have any information for me on this Oskar Bertelson? Thanks.
