Elizabeth Bertine NYC 1800

I'm trying to learn more about Elizabeth Bertine who married James McCarter August 14, 1800 at the First and Second Presbyterian Church in NYC.

It appears that either Elizabeth or James had a child by a previous marriage as there was girl under 10 listed in their household in the 1800 census. James was at least 35 when they were married, and Elizabeth between 26 and 45 so she would have been born sometime prior to 1774.

James appeared in court in 1806 on charges that he had beat Elizabeth. She probably left him at this time because she does not appear in his household in the 1810 census

Did she go back to her family? Who were they? She must have taken any of their children with her, because no children under the age of 10 appear in James household in 1810.

Would really appreciate any information on Elizabeth and her Bertine family.

Thanks,
Kate

More information on Elizabeth and James can be found on my web site:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mckate/mccarterpage...

Looking for information on Robert Bertine, b. ca. 2/8/1803 in NYC or Westchester. Married Mary C. Barnes. Lived in Smithfield/Amenia, Dutchess County, NY. d. 12/16/1876, buried in Amenia. Children were Ann Eliza (m. J. Sackett Alling), Josephine (m. John Hammond), Gertrude (m. Guernsey Sackett, Mary (m. John R. Thompson), and one son, Robert D. One of the Roberts had a general store in Shekomeko, NY. Robert D. apparently moved to Binghamton, NY in late 1800's. Am looking for any information on ancestors or descendants. The Bertines were of Huguenout ancestry, with the family probably living in NYC or New Rochelle.

Since posting my original query on the board, I have gotten a copy of "Piere Bertine -1686: Descendants and allied families", by Dorothy Wilkerson Bertine. It's a true opus of the Bertine family. Dorothy Bertine is a real genealogist, using all sorts of census, church, etc. records. She doesn't guess. If she's not sure of the relationship, she says she's not sure. She also appears to have figured out the various Pierre/Peters, of which there was at least one in each generation. There are a number of Sarah's in the book. If your Sarah is buried at St. Paul's, she's definitely of the same line as Robert, Paschal, William and the rest. So we are in someway cousins. You also have a kissin' cousin named Carol in North Dakota (descended from a William Bertine). Send me as much info as you can about your Sarah and I'll go through the book and find her. We've got a blizzard heading our way, and I may get to it this weekend if my lights stay on. I'm also going to St. Paul's as soon as it warms up. I'll be taking pictures at the cemetery for Carol from North Dakota, and will be glad to take some for you too.

Thank you for your reply. Since my first query, I found more information on Sarah Bertine. From a family letter and a newspaper obituary I have learned the following: Her full name was Sarah Adeline Bertine, born 1818 in NYC. She died in 1903, buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Elmhurst. She had a sister named Mary Ann, (according to the letter). Sarah's first husband was John L. Way. Their two children were Oscar and Susan. From the obituary, it states that Sarah was the daughter of Peter Bertine, a shoe merchant and manufacturer from NYC. He retired to Mt. Vernon. Any other information you find in the book would be greatly appreciated. Is the book you mentioned available for sale that you know of? I would like to buy it for my mother. Sarah Bertine was her great-grandmother. Thank you from a Minnesota branch of the Bertines. Good luck with the blizzard.

My great-great-grandmother was Sarah Adeline Bertine. From a family letter and a newspaper obituary, the information we have is that she was the daughter of Peter Bertine, a shoe merchant and manufacturer in NYC. (The obituary states that Peter retired at an early age to Mount Vernon.) According to the letter, Sarah had a sister named Mary Ann who married an Ezra Carpenter. They had a daughter named Dora. Sarah herself was born in 1818 and died in 1903. With her first husband John L. Way she had a son Oscar and a daughter Susan. Contrary to previous information I had, the obituary states that she was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Elmhurst, NY. I am interested in hearing from others of this branch of the Bertine family tree.

I forgot to include Paschal in last night's message. He too is listed in Longworth's as being in the shoe trade in 1835. The scenario that the dates suggest to me is that four brothers, perhaps, Peter, Robert, Samuel, and Paschal made and sold shoes in Brooklyn. Since William would have been only 7 years old in 1835, maybe he was the son of one of the principals and joined the firm when he was old enough. You mentioned that Robert retired after the Civil War. Maybe all four did, and that's why William moved on. I haven't so far found other Bertines in Michigan, but I did run into a Burtine two counties north of where William settled. Some of the Bertine information I have came from a Family Tree Maker CD of NY sources, early censuses, city directories, genealogical society journals, and so forth. Other Bertines in Westchester County and NYC appear in addition to the ones we've discussed. If you'd like information on the others, let me know. I haven't looked at a directory myself to see if might contain more information than the CD includes, and the chances of my accessing a directory here in the backwoods of Wyoming are pretty slim. If you have better opportunities, maybe the original sources could be helpful to you. Oh yes - Pierre Bertine settled in New Rochelle. Thanks so much for your correspondence. We Bertines are pretty scarce; I'd begun to despair that I'd find another. Carol

Robert and William Bertine

I'm fairly certain our Bertines are connected. My William, a Robert, Samual, and Paschal had a shoestore in Brooklyn in the 1850's. William's middle name was Boice, and I've found a Peter Bertine married to an Eliza Boice at the proper time to be William's parents. Peter and Eliza lived in Eastchester, Westchester County. Others of Peter's family lived in New Rochelle. Do you have any further information that if added to mine would complete a corner of the puzzle?

And I'll include the book author's information in case you want to contact her. The books aren't cheap, but they're really well researched and documented.

Re: Bertine/Lake

Dorothy Bertine's book doesn't specifically indicate an Elizabeth married to Thomas Lake. The Elizabeth who seems most likely was the daughter of Peter Bertine and Judith Renaud. Elizabeth's brothers Peter and JAmes were born in 1760 and 1763. No birth date is listed for either Elizabeth or brother Isaac. These Bertines were residents of NEw York City. Peter is buried iin St. Paul's Church Yard, Trinity Parish, Broadway & Fulton. Peter was the son of Peter Bertine and Catharine Secord. If this information somehow leads you to the proof you need, get back in touch, and I'll arrange to photocopy info about Peter's ancestors. Since there's no information on Elizabeth other than the fact she existed, there's probably no pressing need for you to buy the book. But if you want to, I'll get you name and address so you can contact the author.
