Bio: Ezra Bertram, Lenawee Co., MI

"Illustrated History and Biographical Record of Lenawee County Michigan," by John I. Knapp & R. I. Bonner [The Times Printing Company, Adrian, MI, 1903], p.p. 179-180:

EZRA BERTRAM, Jr., was born in Rome, Lenawee County, Mich., October 6, 1836, being one of the first to be born in the township, and is now one of its oldest residents. His father, Ezra Bertram 2d, was born in Redding, Conn., November 5, 1806. When he was six years old, his father, Ezra Bertram 1st, was a sailor, commanded an ocean merchant ship and lived in Redding, Conn., his family consisting of his wife and four children. In 1812 he gave up his ship and removed to Roxbury, Delaware County, N. Y., and purchased a farm, engaging in the dairy business, making butter for the New York market. Here his oldest son, Ezra 2d, lived until he was sixteen years old, when he was appointed a cadet to West Point. He remained at the Academy for two years, when he was ordered to Fortress Monroe. In 1826 he resigned his commission, not liking a soldier's life. He at once returned to the State of New York and settled in Hartland. Here his first employment was in teaching school. He also learned the carpenter's trade, working summers and teaching winters, until 1833, when he came to Michigan, settling on Section 29 in Rome, this county. He entered his first land from the government, but afterwards added to it until he possessed two hundred acres. In 1870 he erected a large brick house on "Bertram Hill," on the same section where he resided until his death, August 29, 1888. He was as well known as any man in his township. He participated in the "Toledo War," was elected for several terms as Justice of the Peace, but finally practiced in the justice courts, being a successful pleader and formidable opponent to professional lawyers. His gift for "story telling" was remarkable, being able to frustrate the "other side" with apt sayings and ridiculous comparisons, often convulsing the Court and jury. In 1829 he married Miss Charlotte A. Bates, daughter of John and Aveline (Calvin) Bates, of Hartland, Orleans County, N. Y., and they became parents of twelve children, Ezra, Jr., being the fourth child and third son. Mrs. Aveline (Bates) Bertram was born in Hartland, N. Y. Her father was a soldier in the war of 1812, and was with Gen. Scott in the battle of Lundy's Lane and other important engagements. He came to Lenawee County in 1833, and died in Rome, this county, on the land he took from the government, in October, 1861. Her mother, Aveline (Calvin) Bates, was born in Rutland, Vt., and died in Rome in 1867. Ezra Bertram, Jr., subject of this sketch, was born upon the farm that he now owns, on Section 29 in Rome, and has always lived there. In September, 1861, he enlisted in Company E, Third Regiment, Michigan Cavalry, and served through the great Rebellion. Most of his service was in the Western army. The regiment was rendezvoused at Grand Rapids in the fall of 1861, proceeded to St. Louis and at once became a part of Gen. Sheridan's brigade. In the Texas campaign the regiment was in Gen. Custer's brigade. The regiment was re-enlisted in the fall of 1863, and served in all four and one-half years. He was wounded twice in battle. He was discharged at Jackson, Mich., in February, 1866. Upon his return from the army he returned to his home in Rome, and has given his attention to farming ever since. He now owns a fine farm of 245 acres, under a good state of cultivation. He served his township as Supervisor for two terms, three terms as Highway Commissioner, School Director, etc., etc. February 19, 1864, Ezra Bertram, Jr., married Miss Patience Daniels, daughter of Reuben and Sarah Daniels, of Woodstock, this county, and they are the parents of three children, as follows: Fred E., born November 6, 1869, married Miss Frankie Tomer, has two children and resides in Rome; Frank E., born April 2, 1873, married Miss Katie Graw, has two children, and resides in Adrian City; Minnie E., born October 7, 1878, married John H. Bates and resides in Rome. Mrs. Patience (Daniels) Bertram was born in Madison, Somerset County, Maine, November 1, 1840, and came to Michigan with her parents in 1856. Her parents were natives of Maine, and died in Robinson, Ottawa County, Michigan. Her father died in 1882, aged 72. Her mother died August 19, 1899, aged 86 years.
___________________

Fair Warning: Some "facts" in this bio are not quite factual. There are females with the given names Elvira, Elvina and Evelyn, but not one single Aveline has been found. "Aveline" [Bates] Bertram was never known as anything but Charlotte; Aveline [Calvin] Bates was born Charlotte Colvin [ca 1784] in Ira, Rutland Co., VT. According to Michigan Birth Returns for Lenawee County, Minnie Bertram, daughter of Ezra & Patience, was born 06 Nov 1878, not as noted above.
John Moffat's wife - Mary Bertram or Margaret Gibson? (1833-Dunse)

I have a mystery re John Moffat, tenant of Hordweel, Berwickshire, Scotland, with two different records. One says that his wife, Mary Bertram, died April 10, 1833; the other says his wife, Margaret Gibson, died April 12, 1833. And, one was 69, the other 67. Which is it?

We have a marriage record for John Moffat and Mary Bertram, but not for John and Margaret Gibson. A 2nd marriage?

Duns Parish Churchyard. Page 98 No. 12 (Berwickshire Monumental Inscriptions).

Mary Bertram wife of John Moffat, tenant of Hoardweel 10.4.1833 - 69yrs.
said John Moffat 10.11.1840 - 84yrs.
son Peter tenant in Hoardweel 26.1.1862 - 63yrs.
son John died in London 11.11.1824 -
31yrs. Alison Aitchison wife of Peter Moffat 1.5.1865 - 71yrs.

Dunse Burial records:

1833
April 12 Margaret Gibson wife of John Moffat, tenant Hordweel, died 12th April 1833, and buried 15th April aged 67 years.

Any help in sorting this out would be appreciated.
Carolyn
Mary Purves & Peter Bartram, Ayton parish, Berwickshire

I am looking for the parents of Mary Bertram who married John Moffat May 22, 1789, Cranshaws, Berwickshire. I believe Peter Bertram may be her father.

I have found a record for John Bartram (var. of Bertram?) dated 20 Sept 1766 in Ayton parish, Berwickshire whose parents were Peter Bartram and Mary Purves.

William Purves and Allan Purves were witnesses to John Moffat's will in 1840, Duns parish, so William and Allan would have been born sometime before 1820.

Does anyone have any information on any of these folks?

Billie Bertram Long Beach CA

I'm looking for Billie Bertram of Long Beach, California. I have a little information on this guy's ancestry and he is a cousin of mine through the Hester family. I'm hoping he can give me some information as well.

Edna Maude Hester born 24 Mar 1901 in Love County, Oklahoma was the sister to my ancestor Golden Mae Hester Foster. She was the daughter of Joseph Anderson Hester of Iowa and Martha Abigail Goodman Hester who was born in KY and died in 1942 in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California. She married Slavens Bertram sometime around 1919 in Gainesville, Cooke County, Texas. She divorced him before 1930 and moved with her mother and brother Edwin Joseph Hester, and Billie Bertram to Long Beach to be near her older brother Oscar and his wife Mary/Marie. Edna later married Charles Orman Polson.

For anyone interested: Slavens Bertram also goes by the names Slaven, Slavins and Slavin in various census records and documents. He was the son of William A Bertram who was born in the Oklahoma Territory and Ellen or Ella Slavin of Grayson County, Texas. Slavens was born 5 Jun 1894 in Ringgold, Montague County, Texas. He was living in Cooke County from at least 1917 when he filled out a WW1 registration form till the census of 1930. William had a brother Henry Bertam who also lived in Cooke County, TX. William and Henry Bertram's father was from Germany. Don't know what happened to Slavens Bertram after 1930. In his WW1 application he had brown hair, blue eyes, and was a tall slender man living on Blanton Street in Gainesville. In 1917 he was an operator at the Majestic Theater, and in 1930 he was a barber shop owner.

He is listed as a nephew.

James was born in Ohio. In the 1900 census Madeline lists that she had 10 children and 4 were living. In the 1910 census she lists that she had 10 children and 3 were living.

I only know of two of Madeline's children, Albertine and her sister Aspasia Demay Williot, my great great grandmother.

Would love to find some information on James Bertram and his family.

Mary Bertram, John Moffat, Berwickshire, Scotland

According to their tombstone, Joseph Douglas d. June 6, 1866, 68 years, and Alison Moffat, d. Jan. 26, 1877, 81 years. I think their birth dates are January 28, 1798 and Bef. March 22, 1795, both in Duns(e), Berwick, Scotland.

From the LDS site, John Moffat, m. Mary Bertram, May 22, 1789, Cranshaws, Berwick, Scotland. They had a daughter,
Alison, baptized March 22, 1795, Cranshaws, Berwick, Scotland, and another daughter, Margaret, b. Bef. September 30, 1790, also in Cranshaws.

I think this Alison is the same who married Joseph Douglas July 13, 1819, Duns, Berwick, Scotland. She died Jan. 26, 1877, aged 81 years, 10 months, in Huron Co., Canada.

I would appreciate any info that would help me verify this Douglas-Moffat connection, and if true, any info on John and Mary's ancestors.

Peter Bertram 1818-1886, Germany/Pennsylvania

Researching Peter Bertram, b. 22 March 1818 in Germany. Immigrated in 1842 on the ship Argo from Le Havre, landing in NY. Was married to Louisa Rittersbacher ( daughter of Nicholas & Christianna Rittersbacher) in 1844 in Lebanon County, PA. Don't know if Peter & Louisa knew each other prior to immigration or if it was a ship-board romance; the story goes that they went their separate ways after arriving in America, but apparently stayed in touch, with him going out to marry her & bringing her back to Plymouth, Luzerne County, PA where he had settled.
They are on the 1850 Plymouth, Luzerne Co. census. On subsequent censuses, they both indicated they were born in Bavaria. Peter was a stone mason & they were Protestant.
Their children were: Albert R. Bertram (my line; m. Emma Elizabeth Ransom), Catherine (m. 1)Ziba Major, 2)Ransom Elston), Peter (m. Adelia Ransom, Emma's sister), Elizabeth (m. Charles Henderson), and Christianna.
I have much info going back on the Ransom & Major lines but nothing on Bertram & Rittersbacher in Germany.
Thank you!

Bertrams in Wayne Co and Simian Line

I, too, am a descendent of John Calvin born in 1825 in Sunnybrook. When I was very young, my grandmother noticed that the creases on my palms went all the way across my hands instead of being broken into two lines. She said this was a Bertram trait. Through later research, I found that this is very rare and occurs in only 3% of the population. I'm wondering if anyone else out there who is a Bertram has this trait.

I'm looking for the descendants of George Bertram and his wife, Jean Mackenzie (1855-99). She died in Blyswood, Glasgow. I believe that they had at least 2 children, Jean born in 1884 and Margaret in 1893. I would like to hear from anyone who has knowledge of this family.

Bertrams in Ontario

We are descendents of George (b. 1847) and John Bertram (b. 1938) who were born in Haddingtonshire, Scotland (father was Hugh Bertram). They came to Ontario, Canada prior to 1870.
We know a lot about the family after they emigrated, but nothing before. Can anyone help? There seem to have been many Bertrams in Ontario in the hardware business.

Bertram spelling or name change

I am researching Bertrams. The people I know for sure that I am related to starts with Myrtle B. Bertram b. 1869, her father, Wills Henry Bertram b. 1845. The LDS web-site says that Willis Henry Bertram's father was Ezra Bertram II b. 1806, his father father was Ezra BARTRAM b. 1773, his father was Paul BARTROM b. 1736, his father was David BARTRAM b. 1702, his father was Daivd BARTRAM b. 1665, his father was John BARTRAM b. 1639. If I knew this information was absolutely correct it would be great but I am not sure because of the different spellings of the names. Would it have been common for the spelling of names to get screwed-up? Do any of these names sound familiar to anybody? Does anybody have any ideas or guidence they would like to share?

Wayne County, Kentucky Butrams

Hello, I descend from Wm. Buttram, father of Cornelius Bttram, father of Abigail Butram who married Rev. Wiley Jones in Wayne Co., Ky about 1823-24. They migrated with several other families, including the father Cornelius Buttram, and several of his adult children to Hensley Twp, Johnson Co., Ky about 1828-30. Cornelius Buttram died there about 1846-48. HIs wife Nancy Woodruff survived him, and is found in the 1850 census for Johnson Co., Indiana living in the household of a daughter who married a Richardson. Some Butram descendant still live in Indiana to this day. Abigail and husband Rev. Wiley Jones migraed on further to Van Bren Co/Cass Co., Missouri, and then to the Territory of Kansas about 1854 to an area that is now in Douglas County, Kansas. I have LOTs more info, and can be cootacted at misschevious2@hotmail.com
