My most known Besse was Lydia Besse and she married Owen Dorathy. Large family and most stayed in Illinois. Not sure what Besse's went onto the Dakota's. They were connected to Ephraim though.

Paternity of Muriel Knisely

This is a long shot at best- my husband's Grandma Muriel Knisely was the daughter of Edna Mabel Besse. She had her in Minnesota when she was 20, in the year 1916, and did not identify her father she then married a man named Harry Wm Knisely and moved with him to Nebraska. She left Muriel back in Minnesota with her mother. Her paternity was never revealed. Is there anyone who knows anything of this mystery?

> The tribe is the Wampanog from the Cape. It is the great
> grandmother of Walter Besse.

Would you please cite some contemporary records to support that position? Although Wampanoag ancestry has often been asserted for Plymouth Colony families, the vast majority of those making such assertions cannot prove them.

Dale H.
> I have info going back to Phillip Besse in England, his son John
> and his son Anthony Besse.

I would suggest that you re-check your sources. Recent research concludes that nothing is known of Anthony's origin or parentage save that he was perhaps of London. See the well-documented sketch of Anthony Bessey and his family in Robert Charles Anderson, "The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England 1634-1635," Volume I (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1999), pp. 266-270.

Dale H.
Re: Henrietta B. Besse abt 1806 - 1844 Wareham MA

You may already have this information, but......
According to the vital records of Hallowell Maine, there was a Henrietta Besse b.1798 to Ebenezer & Patience Besse.
Siblings were:Braddock 1801, Ebenezer 1803, George 1804, Louisa 1806 and Julia 1808/9.
The surprising thing is that her father (Ebenezer) is listed as being born in WAREHAM to Jabez & Ruth! Wareham vitals record an Ebenezer born to Jabez & Ruth in March 1754.
There must be a connection there as Charles Hay was also born in Maine. Perhaps Charles & Henrietta came to Wareham because of relatives there.
Does this help?

> The tribal chief checked their records and could find nothing
> either.

Sue -

In all the years in which I have conversed with those who thought that they had Native American ancestry, you are the first to look to Native American leaders for evidence. For that you are to be highly commended because you have been trying to find evidence that satisfies the genealogical standards for evidence. I wish you had found something - you could probably have gotten it published in one of the major genealogcal journals and shamed many who claim 17th-century Wampanoag ancestry without proof.

Sometimes Mayflower ancestry turns up in an unexpexted place. My Easton-born grandmother always knew that she had Mayflower ancestors, but it was not until long after she and my Harwich-born grandfather were gone that I discovered his Mayflower ancestors. If your ancestry has any unresolved 17-century or early 18th-century branches in southeastern MA you may yet find a Pilgrim in your tree. If a library near you had Mayflower Descendant you may wish to check the indices, as they have often published articles naming 7th and 8th generation descendants (who do not appear in the Silver Books). Alternatively, I own a complete run of MD and would be glad to look for you - go to the web site listed in my signature and use the email link at the bottom of that page.

Dale H.
Hi Dale, my mother had heard of an Indian marriage but I can see the male she attributed it to was married to a woman of English heritage. The tribal chief checked their records and could find nothing either.
On another note, I see you are a member of the MA Soc. of Mayflower Descendants. I have lately been trying to see if I am a Mayflower descendant but so far I am just the descendant of the stepmother of Mayflower descendants... so close, but not quite.
~Sue

If any one know's the Indian trib that they came
> from ...

I know of no reputable source giving the Besses any Native American connections other than Anthony's missonary work among the Native Americans.
I have just run across this post - following the siblings of Antoine Besse b. ca 1690, Jean Besse ca. 1716, Pierre Besse ca 1735, and the offspring of these ancestors from France. My family roots sank down in Louisiana - I have noticed that some have sunk down in Texas - and some must've loved that more temperate environment and stay up in Canada and the northern climates.
Very helpful hints you offer here to further my family research.
