My husband's great-grandmother was Maria Bet, b. Mar 1882 in Barcis, Italy and married Valentine Bortoli. They came to the US around 1901 and lived in Illinois. Maria's father's name might of been Mia, but her mother's first name was Catherine. Any information regarding this family would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi!

I was happy to hear from you. Yes, my grandfather was born in Frisanco in 1876. In fact, I am the first member of my family to visit Frisanco. I went there in 2005 and got to see where my grandfather lived and go into the church where my grandparents were married in 1901. My grandmother was from Barcis.

My grandfather's sister was Filamena Filippi Tome and she married Sante Longo Bianco. They remained in Frisanco until their passing.

One of their daughters immigrated to Bridgeville, Pa. I understand that town has a lot of people from Frisanco. Does that town sound familiar to you?

If you would like to e-mail me, my address is: Soonrfan97@aol.com

Patti

Based on the names mentioned in your email, I assume your family came from Frisanco,Italy & or the vicinity. My 90 year old mom, Irene Luisa(conte)-Longo, is the connection to the Vissat family, and I know she had a cousin Peter Vissat. My father, Livio Longo(murit),now deceased, had a brother Peter Longo, but he passed away a number of years ago. I have a Vissat family tree provided by a Vissat cousin of mine... let me know if you're interested and I'll email a copy of it to you. There is probably some family connection, and maybe the names would be familiar to you/your family. By the way, I grew-up in the Pittsburgh area, in a neighborhood filled with Friulani immigrants, many from Frisanco and Poffabro.
Leo L. Longo

Hi there,

My last name is Vissat (my grandfather - now deceased - was Peter Vissat). I grew up on Long Island, where I knew some of our relatives the Longos - primarily Peter Longo. As far as I know, he and his family still reside there. I actually still carry the Luisa Vissat name! I will ask my father, Adrian Vissat, for some more information.

Cheers!

My grandfather was Antonio Filippi Tome who was born in Frisanco in 1876 to Giovanni Battista Filippi Tome and Domenica Luisa Vissat. He had 3 sisters: Maria who married Giuseppe Dozzo Battistut, Luigia who died around age 20, and Filomena who married Sante Longo Bianco. Filomena lived in Frisanco until her death in 1976.

I have been working on my Filippi Tome and Luisa Vissat family trees.

My great grandmother, Domenica Luisa Vissat was born in Frisanco in 1849 to Osvaldo Luisa Vissat and Maria Longo Gat. She died in 1904. Her sisters were Maddalena who married Giovanni Battista Dreon Barnardin, Luigia who married Osvaldo Culau Merlo, and Santa who married Antonio Beltrame. Her brother was Alvise who married Maddelena Barzan.

Do any of these names sound familiar to you?

I am looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
My father, Livio Longo (Murit)and my grandfather on my mother's side, Vitorio Luisa (Conte) both immigrated from Frisanco. My mother's maiden name is Luisa (changed to Louisa in the US). I was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area and grew-up there with a number of Louisa's & Vissats many of whom I was related. My mom, now 90 years old, is still vitally alive as are two of her Louisa sisters (92 & 82 yrs. old)... they know and remeber the family history. My Aunt on the Longo side of my family married into the Filippi's and resides in Philadelphia ... There are other Filippi's still living there (Pitts. too), some from Profabro as well as Frisanco (some go by the americanized "Phillips"). I still have family in Frisanco (on the Longo side) and will be visiting there again in late September 2007. We are also planning a family reunion in Friuli in June 2008... expecting a number of my family members from the USA to be in attendance. Let me know if you are interested in communicating further.

Tho I don't have an exact match for the names in your e-mail, I do have Tinor, D'Agostins and Paulons born in Barcis in my family tree. This is the information I have:

My great great grandmother was Daniela Paulon who married Giovanni Battista Berolo. They had 2 sons. Luigi Berolo (1837-1887) and Pietro Berolo (1832-1889).

Their son, Luigi Berolo married Giacomina D'Agostin (the daughter of Luigi D'Agostin). They had 5 children. One of their daughters, Vittoria Berolo (1872-1959) married Luigi D'Agostin (son of Luigi D'Agostin and Angela Gasparin). They had 3 children: Enrico Luigi born 1902, Albino Angela born 1903 and Emilio Giovanni born 1900.

The other son, Pietro Berolo, married Teresa Taron (1839-?). She was the daughter of Guiseppe Taron.

Do any of these names sound familiar to you? They were all born in Barcis.

Patti

I am just getting started in my search. Looking info on the parents of Gemma Tinor D'Agostin born in Barcis in 1916. Mothers name is Domenica Fontin and fathers name is Ruggero Tinor. Gemma had 2 brothers Leonello and Irving.
I am also hoping to find info on the parents of Giovanni Antonio D'Agostin (o)(i). He was born in Boston Mass. His parents I believe were born in Barcis. Fathers name is Giovanni D'Agostin and mothers name is Maria Paulon(e). Giovanni Antonio had 1 sister Domenica (Mamie) she never married. I believe she was born in 19001 and died 1963 in Barcis.

My father, Attilio Bet, heard of your query and wishes me to relay his words:

"In answer to your request fo some help and information on Giovanni Batista Bet we do not know of him. Our names are Attilio and Ludovico Bet born 1936 and 1931 in Barcis. We may be related. We are ancestors of the biggest family of Bets. There were two other, smaller Bet families. Besides your last name the families added another name to identify one from another. We are Bet of Martiel.

As far as the town of Barcis at Giovanni's time the population was probably at its height of 1500 to 2500 people. It has about 200 permanent residents today. After the Second World War most of the young people either migrated to the major cities or to countries like Canada.

During the Second World War the German army burned 90% of the town in response to suffering casualties caused by local Partigianni (gorilla fighters). They also killed and burned three elderly men from town. The town was rebuilt with help from the government and the Marshall Plan.

The town's location is along the shore of a man made lake. During good weather, especially in the summer, sight seers crowd the town. The river that was dammed for irrigation and power in the 1950's was called Celina.

My brother and I migrated to the USA in 1950 with the help of relatives we had here. I, Attilio, have a wife, Maria, one son, three daughters and seven grandchildren. Ludovico's wife is Teresa and has four sons, a daughter and ten grandchildren."

My dad hopes his words will be of some value to all who are researching their roots. You can get in touch with him through me at mab65@optonline.net.

Our ancestors used the Furlan word "mandi" to greet and bid farewell to one another.

So mandi to you all,

Michael

Hello Larry:

My name us Lisa and my hsband and I used to live in Barcis while he was in the Air Force. We were there from 1994-1998. Our house was across from Lake Barcis.

We keep in touch with good friends that live there. They are Arrigo, Fausta, Cristina, Francesca and Mauro Bet. They were our neighbors and babysitter for our daughters, one of whom was born in Pordenone not too far from Barcis.

There are some Bet family members still around. Aside from the family, I know they have family in France and a grandmother that just moved from Rome.

If I can help please don't hesitate to contact me. Until then, I will say that Barcis is a little village of 300-400 people tucked in the Italian Alps. The people are fantastic! We miss it very much and look forward to one day going back.

Blessings,
Lisa Johns

Hi!

Thanks for your e-mail. I am looking forward to my first visit to Barcis, where my grandmother (Angela Berolo) was born. I have been working on her family tree. In doing so, I found a Francesca Bet who was married to Sebastiano Corradini. They had a daughter, Maddelena Corradini, date of birth about 1822.

I'm looking forward to learning more about my family and about Barcis and Frisanco (my grandfather's birth place).

Thank you,
Patti

They do have a cemetary at the edge of town. Unlike most cemetaries here in the US, Barcis has its burial grounds surrounded by four walls. It is open during the day.

Pictures of the deceased are posted on most grave headstones. Should you find a ancestor you might also be lucky enough to see how they looked at one point in life.

Buon viaggio e mandi,

Ciao Enrico!

I was very surprised to get your message! My great-grandfather was Massimilliano BET. His parents wer Gaetano Bet and Caterina Fantini. He was married to Caterina Colussi and had two daughters, Caterina and Candida. But she died and he re-married Maria Paulon. they came to the US in 1914 at the start of WWI. I do not know much about Barcis except that the old village was covered by a lake in the 50's. so your information that they were knife-makers is news! Please write again!

Teena Hintz hintzt@hotmail.com

Hi!

I want to send an e-mail to Barcis and to Frisanco (birth place of my grandmother and grandfather). However, they don't speak English and I don't speak Italian.

I found the bablefish website. Do you think if I translated English to Italian on that website, they could understand me? Or, is there a better website to use for translation? I know they speak the Furlan dialect.

Thanks for your help.

Patti

Thanks for your help.

My name is Patti Claude'. My grandmother was born in Barcis in 1877. Her name was Angela Berolo, the daughter of Luigi Berolo and Giacomina D'Agostini. Luigi Berolo was the son of Giovanni Battista Berolo and Daniela Paulon.

I really enjoyed reading your posting about Barcis history. My husband and I are going to Barcis and Frisanco (my grandfather's birth place) the end of April. This will be our first visit to these villages. While I don't speak Italian, I will have a dictionary and phrase book with me.

I'm hoping to learn more about my family. Do you know if they have a cemetary that might give me some clues?

Patti

My wife, Ilaria Bet,born in Canada, is the daughter of Giovanni Batista Bet,Born in Barcis in 1896. He moved to Orcenico Superiore in Friuli, at a young age, along with his brother Emilio. He married Maria Milani. and subsequently emigrated to Canada in 1923. Is there anyone out there who can help us with Giovanni's family history. Is there anyone who can tell us a little about the village of Barcis, then and now?
