Any Bethany's out there still working on the Charles Homer Bethany line?

If so and you would like to collaborate let me know. I am willing to share my information with you. As far as accuracy, I have most of the death certificates and such for my side of the family, and am working on attaining them for other lines as well. I think it would be great to collaborate with other branches of Homer's children and their descendant's though. If interested email me at:

joshua_bethany@hotmail.com

I don't have nearly any of my info on my family tree online. Mostly on my family tree maker. I also have a complete death list of tate cemetery where the only daughter of Levi Bethany and her extended family are all buried. My mom wrote you earlier. Her Bethany tree maker is not as full as mine though.

Got his death certificate today. Dan is my great great Uncle on my dads side. Listed as his father is Pink Bethany. Anyone interested in that line of Bethany's let me know. Pink is the son of Charles Homer Bethany. I have a family member of Dan's going to meet with his grand daughter next week to get more info on the Bethany's in Pope and Franklin County Arkansas. We are still sorting information out, but I have accumulated in a short amount of time along with my moms thirty years a great deal of information. Any Bethany's interested in a copy of my finished family tree book I am going to write let me know. It might take a while to complete, but I can offer lineage information until then.

On this board, including any descendants of Opal Bethany Bowles? Would love to hear from you. My husbands grandfather was William's Uncle. William was named after Dan's wife father William H. who fought in the civil war, and migrated to the South East from Illinois. I have some info on William H's sister Lessie Mae Bethany Wisdom as well. William also had an aunt name Sallie whose family still lives in the missouri/Tennessee area, but we are still trying to track all of them down.

Re: Levi Bethany

Sandhill cemetery newton county arkansas. I have been there once as a child with my parents. Their are four plots of bethany's. It is located in the northeast section of the cemetery from what the guy said.

The figuring of Levi was rather odd. I came across the two sara's having never done any of this. I started writing people, and once I got on ancestry I found a few census with Miss Sarah Hanton born in 1850 and a Sarah Bethany born in 1850. Their is no such person as a John P. Bethany, and if you notice Levi lived next to charles I believe up until he started his own family in 1870. Levi and Sarah's marriage record is listed on this site under the last name becheny in 1870 missouri Texas. She later remarried showing that levi died between 1880 and 1890. I told Jean Cloke my family and Levi himself were kind of lost. We knew about the bat cave, my grandfather visited Francis Marion's son Elmer in Tulare, and that apparently the younger pictures of Jay and my father are stunningly similar. I had a family member withhold some info from me out of sibling rivalry, so I sought out my own research. I am glad to have uncovered the historical periods of yellow fever and influenza as well. In 1914 we lost all the family history in a fire. I will be publicly sharing my family line in about two weeks now that I am near completion. Then I am so excited to learn more about the other side of our family.

In case their are any other bethany's out their interested in another line of the family, I have just completed a discovery that was found inside of a botched census. In the 1880 census their is a family living next to Charles Homer with the name of John P. Bethany and Sarah Bethany. Their is no John P. The person in that census is actually Levi P. Bethany, and his wife who was born in 1850 missouri. They actually wrote John Henderson's info down in the census, which causes a major confusion and completely wrote off my side of the family for years. Also, that census contains an individual named Alto bethany who was born before Levi and Sarah's marriage in 1870. Like William A. William, son of delilah Couch, Alto was apparently given Pinckney's name. I have discovered that Levi, Alto, Levi Jr., and Thomas disappear between 1880 and 1890 during the smallpox outbreak in their county. The only survivors of the family are Dan H., William Marion (my great grandfather), and Sarah. Sarah becomes remarried in 1890 to a William W. Jameson in Missouri, and passes in 1904. Dan has many children in his lineage, and I am trying to get ahold of some of them. I currently am trying to get ahold of John Willis grandson Elmer through his grandchildren to see if I can get more information on my line of Bethany's. Thanks. Happy hunting.

We (several researchers) have never figured out exactly who John P. is and most of us have been looking at this since the 70's & 80's (about 1985 for me). It is probable that he is a nephew or cousin's child. He was born in NC after Charles was in Lincoln Co., TN and during the time Charles was married to his first wife, who only lived a few months after their marriage.

Since Charles reportedly didn't have any brothers, only one sister named Mary or Mary Ann or possibly, Louise, John P. is probably a cousin's child who came west and joined them. The story that one of his granddaughter's told is that there were only two children, and their parents died young. They were raised by someone else, we think probably their maternal grandparents because we cannot find them in any Bethany HH's prior to Charles' first marriage. Finding their parents & IDing their grandparents has been the biggest brick wall in the family for over 25 years.

There are other Bethany's in NC before & after Charles birth & subsequent move to TN. So the possibility of cousins is very great. Also, a large number of them moved to Northern AL & GA, some to LA, then MS & TX. As I said before they have the same ancestors as Charles, but are not his descendents.

We have not found any other previous records of this John P. that I recall. Although something in the back of my mind says he might have been with them in MO, but he was not in TN.

"John's sister Levi was living with the family at the time." I'm not sure what you are looking at, but the 1880 census I'm looking at says Levi is 5 years old and John P.'s son.

Actually the story about a Bethany being a U.S. Marshall is not a myth, it is fact. Francis Marion was a U.S. Marshall for a few months working for Judge Isaac Parker in Ft. Smith, AR. But it wasn't quite like you might think. Many times if a man needed a job he would go to work as a marshall for a while, bring back a wanted man, get paid and move on. Most of them only got paid when they brought someone in, almost like a bounty-hunter except they had been sworn in.

Also, I have pictures of the Bat House Cave & Still. I have been there once and would like to go back, but that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Why don't you e-mail me directly and I will try to get some pictures & other stuff to you that might clear up some of your confusion.

Have a good day,
Jean

David is my dad's brother. He is the son of William Marrion Bethany. I have some good news to share with you Gene. I looked up sur names, and found in an 1880 census they had misspelled Charles Homer Bethany, and his wife/kids name in the census. They spelled it "Betheony." I typed that into the search function, and it came back with a John P. Bethany who turned up right next to Charles Homer Bethany on the same census. His wifes name was sara. I double checked to make sure it wasn't John Henderson Bethany and his wife since the birth dates are so similar. It wasn't. Listed in the names of John and Sara's children was William Marrion Bethany born 1874. Bingo!!! Oh, John P. Bethany was born in about 1843 in North Carolina. William Marion had brothers named Danel, Alto, and Thomas Bethany. John's sister Levi was living with the family at the time. Interesting that Charles would name his son after his family members female sister. Now here is what I found interesting. Look at the names of John's children and the same geographic location of Charles Homer Bethany. Also, both Charles Homer Bethany and John's father and mothers were born in the same states. I think I may have uncovered something that can help identify if Charles had family outside of his very large personal one. I can't believe I found. So far it is the only record of them besides dan I have found. It appears this guy was very close with Charles as they both traded off familial names. I am thinking it is either his brother or nephew. They were both born in North Carolina. I am a very happy person for finding this.

My uncle Dave was told more folk lore by the older families than we received. I am sure he will be happy when my dad tells him about this. The only stories I know are true are the ones regarding the bat cave and still. In case I didn't mention my dad's father Norbin used to travel to Fresno area to visit Francis Marion's son. The other myth I need to shoot down is the one about a bethany family member being a US Marshall. As you can see their has been a lot of romanticized folk lore in my family. I am sure finding out who my great grandfather's parents were should help. If you know anything about this or can add let me know. I think this might tie our families up. If you ever feel energetic you might want to check this out too. I found it rather interesting. Plus, it was easy to get confused since John Henderson was born around a year later, and he married a Sara. I guess I should marry someone named sara to revitalize that old time bethany tradition. I found that kind of funny. By the way, my mom said she still has tried to get dave to send us those pics you gave him. I wrote his son David Wayne on here too. Too bad I don't live closer. Then again I would probably go beserk and take too many pictures. I am dying to get some pictures of the headstones at wagoneer.

Levi Pinkney Bethany & William Marion Bethany

OK, let me be sure I understand who you are looking for.

William Marion was your grandfather and Levi Pinkney was your gr-grandfather. I don't have any of Levi's children, so I have no record of this William Marion. I have a William Marion, b. Abt. 1880 married to Laura Kuhn, but I don't know who his father is.

I have another William M. Bethany, b. Abt. 1900 in AR, son of James Hamilton Bethany & Sarah Jane Hill. James is another son of Charles Homer and stayed in Texas Co., MO with Levi when Charles & the younger children went to AR in 1870.

And another Wm. M. Bethany, b. Abt. 1900, son of Dan Bethany and Sarah Fine Darter. I haven't been able to connect Dan to our line or the other line in MS, AL, & TX.

I'm a little confused because I was thinking that David Bethany was descended from Francis Marion Bethany. I have a paper copy of his line somewhere. I will try to dig it out, and look at it again.

BTW, Francis Marion is buried in the Little Cemetery, Little, Seminole Co., OK next to my gr-grandfather Jacob T. Robinson who was married to F.M.'s sister, Martha Jane Bethany, my gr-grandmother. There are probably 30-40 other Bethany family members buried there, including 2-4 more of Charles Homer's children. I live about 25 miles from there.

More later,
JC

I don't have a lot on Levi, but here is what I have.

His full name was Levi Pinkney Bethany, b. Abt. 1846 in TN (probably Benton Co., but could have been Lincoln Co.). He was in Morris Twp., Texas Co., MO with his father & step-mother on the 1870 Census. He married Sarah Harter on December 11, 1870 in Texas Co., MO. On August 30, 1877 he received a land grant of 160 acres in Texas Co., MO.

I don't have anything else on him. I just haven't really worked on his line much.

You're recent post said there were other people living in the home with Charles. Who, when & where??? Maybe I can tell you who they are.

JC

Yeah I have a David who is my uncle (actual name is marrion), and a cousin David Bethany. My cousin David is awesome guy, and probably just as confused about the family as I am. I was pointed to you by a lot of family members, so I am glad to hear from you. I got some info from my Dad's side, and have to weed a lot of it out. They didn't know much about my grandfather other than who his wife was. I was apparently named for a family member (hence my middle name is levi), but never really got into this stuff till recently. I think at 31 I figured it was time to finally seek out where I came from. Their are not a lot of us bethany's left, and if it is possible/you are willing for my own sake and not for copying or printing any material I would like to learn as much about my family as I could. It is mainly for my personal satisfaction. I don't think I want to bring any kids I have up not knowing much about their family as I have.

The one thing I am really interested in is Levi Bethany, Charles Homer, and anything you have from the Newton county cemetery. I know my grandfather came from this line, but due to the lack of paper work on Levi I am unable to fit him in completely. Based on dates we even went so far as to believe he was the twin of Dorothy at one time. Anyways, if you could help me at least learn a bit more in terms of just dates I would appreciate it. I will help you if I can in anyway as well. I am currently awaiting surgery, so I am not doing anything right now. Thanks for your replies.

Joshua Levi Bethany

I'm trying to find the parents of Robert Franklin Bethany b. ca. 1827 in MS. He shows up in East Feliciana censuses as an "overseer", later a saddle-maker. He m. Harriet L. Harrell Cutrer in 1876, had 2 sons John Thomas and William Hobgood. Died from surgery in Charity Hospital in 1886. I'm suspecting that he was the son of Matthew Bethany and Mary Jelks, based on census info on Matthew in Wilkinson Co. MS, then in East Feliciana. Do you know? Thanks for posting your various queries--they've been helpful.

Older family members confirms that Dave Bethany was his father. They were from Panola County Mississippi. From my research, I surmise that William D. Bethany was (probably) his father.
His mother was Carrie Starks, orginally from the Memphis or Desota county, Mississipi areas. I do not know anything about his grandparents because I am just now trying to identify his parents.
Re: Bethany family of SC & LA

I have Robert F. Bethany listed as a son of Mathew Bethany and Mary Jelks in my files. Robert F. Bethany is listed as the uncle of William Bethany's minor child Mary Amanda Bethany in William Bethany's probate file (1850) in West Feliciana Parish. Of course Robert is listed with his brother and family on the 1850 census schedule, with many extended family members nearby.
Robert is listed with the Riley family near Jackson in East Feliciana Parish in 1860. He served as a sergeant in the 1st LA Cav. (Scott's) during the war, for which service his widow later drew a state Confederate pension. He is listed twice on the 1880 census, once at his work place and once at his residence (Assumption Parish, pp. 211-B & 268-B) As you said ,he married Harriet L. Cutrer (b. ca. 1837-1840, d. 1921). After Robert's death, Harriet and her children moved back to West Feliciana Parish, where she was living in 1900 and where she died. Some of her children seem to have later moved to other parts of the state.
If this is your family let me hear from you. I may be reached at ponchatoula1@i-55.com
Re: BETHANY Willa Mae CAMINER and William Jacob Jr

Hi Joshua,

I think I may have corresponded with your mother. I have talked to a Carol Bethany, I'm just not sure it is the same one. Do you have an uncle that lives in Grove, OK? I think his name is David Bethany? My dad used to talk to him quite a bit.

I think this is another person besides William Jesse Bethany. For one thing William Jesse's DOB is June 18, 1868 and the headstone shows 1869. One could be an error of course, but Willam Jesse married Mary Hannah Tinney on August 04, 1892 in Comanche Co., TX. Since his father, mother and several other family members are buried in that county it is probable that he is buried there too. I was there once and found the cemetery where they are buried but the weather was really bad and we couldn't get in because the mud was so deep & slick.

I have some information on all of Charles Homer's children and quite a bit on a few. He had 19 children of his own, plus he raised a step-son. He had 7 children by his 2nd wife, Margaret Couch. His first wife, Delilah Couch, died less than a year after they married. If there was a child from that marriage, it died also. After Margaret's death in about 1860, Charles married Martha Angeline Pierce, daughter of Augustus Pierce. She is my gr-gr-grandmother. They had 12 children.

There are 20-30 family members in the Sandhill Cemetery, with several different surnames. I have pictures of all of them (I think).

I haven't been doing a lot of research the last couple of years, so I'm a little rusty on my facts without looking them up. I also have a lot of info that I haven't put in my FTM program yet, so it is not as accessible. However, I will help as much as I can.

It is a HUGE family, so there is a HUGE amount of info in some areas and virtually none in others.

More later,
Jean Cloke
John Henderson Bethany had a son named William Jesse, but not William Jacob. They are close to the same age, so he could have been the son of one of John Henderson's brothers. I don't have a William Jacob in my files, but I would be interested to find out who he is.

There was also another line of Bethany's in Texas during that time. I think they were from the same ancestors as Charles Homer, but were not descended from him. This William Jacob could be from that line.

What cemetery(s) are you looking at for Charles Homer's children? I have all of them listed, but not burial places for all of them.

Jean

I am looking for any information regarding Levi Bethany, son of Charles Homer Bethany. He was born in Texas County, Missouri in 1846, and their is no info on him after 1870. The only reference I have on him is a reference of him being married, and the 160 acres of land he home steaded in Springfield, Missouri. I am trying to tie up some loose ends with the Arkansas Bethany's, and this might solve a lot of the families riddles.

Joshua L. Bethany

Sorry I thought that was his real middle name as it is misquoted on his headstone as being Jacob and not Jesse. His wife was Mary Elizabeth Sparks correct? If so he was buried in Texas. Their is a picture of his headstone on the photos section. He was listed as living in Texas in 1900.

This is actually Joshua Bethany, and I am using my moms ancestry account. We discovered a WM bethany headstone right next to Charles Homers gravesite, and Fracis Marions infant's in newton county Arkansas at Sandhill cemetery. I would be very thankful if you could help me shed some light on this. If you have any info on Levi Bethany I would appreciate it as well. Based upon his marriage to Sarah Harton in 1871 we have put my grandfather william marrion bethany as being either Levi's son, or as Charles Homers unmarked son. Thanks. Look forward to hearing from you.

I am researching William Marion Bethany and his wife Laura Kuhn. They had six children. Norbin,Woodrow,Sidney, Willie and Millie, and Halley. They can be found in the 1920 census for Arkansas. the only other info I have found is the marriage of William and Laura in 1900 on April 1, His name was spelled Bethney incorrect spelling but that is them. Anyone out there have anything on William ,his dad and mom or other siblings? Still searching,Thanks

I thank you for your reply. But William Marion Bethany was married to a Laura Kuhn. They married on April 1,1900. As usual his name was mispelled"betheny" but that is him just the same.William and family are found in the 1920 census in Arkansas, including all children. But we were all told he died shortly there after. This seems to be true, since he shows up as missing in the 1930 census and Laura claims to be a widow. I have since contacted on of the Grandchilden of his and have gotten alot of info. But can't seem to finda record of his burial or deat online. Are you researching the Bethany line?If so maybe we have some relatives in common,it would be great to hear from you.I Thank You again for responding.
