Re: from ENGLISH JOHN BETHEA to YOU!!!!!

If I read your message correctly, you have named the sons of English John, John and William. One of them should be Tristram. It is from this line that I descend. This is the line which is the least documented. In "Kinfolks, V III, there is a copy of a deed from John to Tristram. If you search on Bethey family I think that you willbe lled to a website that shows that line. Anyway, Tristram's son William married Jerusha Brown and their son, John, married Elizabeth Atkins. They had a daughter, Jerusha, who married Archie Morrison and that was the end of the Bethey name in my line. Jerusha and Archie had a daughter nemed Margaret Jane, who married Francis Marion (F.M.) Blunt. Their daughter Mary Jerusha, married John Ramsey Bickerstaff, who had a son, Reece Orville, who was my daddy.

Hi, I am also looking for information about William Warren Bethea. He would of been my Great Grandfather. My Mom tells me the same story about her Mother receiving a letter around 1930 from her father (William Warren Bethea). You may already know me since it sounds like we would be cousins. I found a 1920 census and a 1930 census report that had him listed. If you like I can email them to you if you have not already found them on ancestry.

William Jesse Bethea b 1844 MS d 1915 Mobile AL

MOBILE REGISTER - 19 JANUARY 1915

CAPT W J BETHEA DIES SUDDENLY

Well-Known Riverman First of Staples Survivors to Meet Death, It Is Said

HE WAS ACTIVE TO THE LAST

Visited River Front Monday Morning and Died on Veranda While Smoking

Captain William Jesse Bethea, known in Mobile as well as at every landing on the Tombigbee and Alabama rivers as 'Captain Jesse,' a Confederate veteran, and for almost fifty years in the river trade, died at his home, 253 State Street, suddenly Monday afternoon. Death was due to heart failure.
During the morning Captain Bethea, apparently in his usual health, visited the river front. He ate a hearty dinner at home and had gone out on the veranda, as was his usual custom, for his smoke, when he suddenly fell dead.
Until the time of the James P Staples disaster Captain Bethea, who then was sixty-nine years of age, had continued in active business. His last employment was as a clerk on the Staples. When the Staples was blown up in January 1913, Captain Bethea was among those who survived, although he was seriously burned and never fully recovered from the effects of the accident. He was the first of the survivors to die, it is said. He was able to be about and even recovered from a stroke of paralysis.
Captain Bethea was 71 years of age on January 2, last. He was born in Yazoo City MS, but came to Mobile as a child. His father was Harry Bethea, a prominent physician, and his mother was formerly Miss Matilda Crosby. Both died when he was quite young.
He was sixteen years old when the war between the states broke out. He left school and enlisted in Semple's Battery of Light Artillery and served in the Western army under Generals Bragg and Hardee. With the death of Captain Bethea, Judge Safford Berney is said to be the only living member of Semple's Battalion in Mobile.
After the war, he returned to Mobile, and thirty-three years ago was married to Miss Ruth Ware, at the latter's home in Sumter county.
All his life since the war Captain Bethea had spent on the river. He had commanded many vessels. During the latter years of his service he had charge of the office work of the various steamers.
He was one of the owners of the Gardner, the D L Tally, and of the Bethea.
Captain Bethea is survived by his wife; four children, Mrs N A Maddler, Mrs Ruth B Keith, of Mobile; Mrs G R Ogden, of Shreveport LA, and Harry Bethea of Mobile.
The funeral services will be held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 6 o'clock. The body will be taken to the county home of the family in Sumter county for interment. The body will leave on the 7:45 o'clock Mobile and Ohio train, Raphael Semmes camp will attend in a body.

Not my family, just sharing from the newspaper archives of the Mobile Public Library.

Good morning,
My name is Lakeacha Bethea-Christmas and I am a descendent of slaves from the Bethea plantation. I do not know much about my history because my great grandfather, Ernest Bethea, of Dillon, SC was exiled from his family after marrying an Indian woman (my great grandmother)from NC. I have been looking for family who predates Grandpa Ernest; however, no information has surfaced. If your grandparents have any information about your great grandfather Adam's brothers, could we compare family trees and see if we are related in this lineage of Betheas. My email is Lakeachachristmas@sffci.com.
