Hi,

I am looking to find the baptism of John Bithell. I have the marriage record of him marrying Sarah Morgan on 23 May 1697 at Eccleshall, Staffordshire. One year later they had their 1st of three children in Seabridge, Staffordshire (about 10 miles from Eccleshall). I have no idea where or when he was baptised but i have searched the nearby parish records and can't find his baptism. Can anyone please help??

www.bithellfamilytree.com

Thanks

Mark

Drury Smith (b.1748) m. Martha Peyton/Martha Challis (w/Bethell/Bethel ties): VA>NC>TN

I am a descendant of Peyton Randolph Smith b. 1789 in Rockingham, NC, son of Drury Smith born 1748 (son of John Smith Sr, patriot of VA) and Martha Peyton. Both Drury & Martha were b. in VA, moved to Rockingham Co, NC after the Rev. war.
We (group of Smith family researchers) have recently had a mystery present itself -Drury's wife, Martha.
The name Martha Challis popped up thru another cousin, who is descended from Alexander Washington Smith & Martha C. Smith (Peyton R. Smith's dau), where the intial "C" stood for Challis in his records. (We haven't figured out the parentage for Alexander Washington Smith yet either, but it's not Peyton Randolph Smith because he says in his memoirs that he had six children, three boys and three girls and we have accounted for the three sons and their families.)
We didn't have the name Challis in our database. While searching for Martha Challis, I came across her as being a dau to Hugh Challis & Martha Wimbish of VA & Rockingham Co, NC, b: ABT 1762.
I then came across an entire tree branch that said Martha Challis m. Drury Smith and they had 2 children
Frances W. Smith, b.1794, m. Benjamin Jordan Bass
Martha "Patie" Smith, b. 1788, m. John Pinkney Bethell

Our information is that Drury Smith m. Martha Peyton Abt. 1778, that she was born Abt. 1756 in Virginia , and died Aft. 1820 in Tennessee . (Drury and Martha moved to Davidson County, Tennessee in 1807 according to their son, Peyton Randolph's memoirs.)
Children of Drury Smith & Martha Peyton-
Martha Smith, b.1779; m. John Bethell
Mariah Smith, b.1783; m. Thomas Bass
Frances Smith, b.1788; m. Benjamin Jordan Bass
Peyton Randolph Smith, b. 29 Nov 1789, Rockingham co, NC; m. Nancy. S. Bass
Lucinda Smith, b. 1792; m. Drury Smith of GA

We obviously have the same people- Drury & Martha, with the same 2 dau- Martha & Frances, who married the same 2 men- Benjamin Bass & John Bethell-
-EXCEPT that there are different birth years for Martha & Frances
Martha Smith b. 1788 vs 1779
Frances Smith b. 1794 vs 1788
-AND we have the name Martha Peyton, the others have the name Martha Challis as Drury's wife.
Also, the birth years for Martha Peyton & Martha Challis are different
Martha Peyton, b. About 1756 in VA - Martha Challis, b. AB 1762

And as far as we can tell, Drury was married only once. Our DAR information on Drury Smith lists his wife as Martha Peyton. If Drury Smith married Martha Challis as a second wife, we have no information about it.

My research puts Martha Challis (widow of Hugh & mother to Martha) and her son John Challis in Rockingham Co, NC in 1790 & 1800, at the same time our Drury Smith, born 1748, lived there.

Other problems:
Peyton Randolph Smith was supposed to be named after his mother's Peyton family; "Patie" or "Peytie" is a common nickname for Peyton in our Smith family;
In Peyton Randolph Smith's autobiography he talks about living "in a strange land" (Davidson County, TN) with his "old baptist mother"- he specifically refers to her as his mother, not step-mother;
We know Peyton Randolph Smith was b. in 1789 and, depending on which years the 2 listed sisters were actually born, he would be younger than them. So if Martha Challis had been a 2nd wife to Drury, she would most likely have been Peyton's mother as well & he wouldn't have been named after Martha Peyton's family.
Or so it seems to me anyway...

Does anyone have any information on this or any of these individuals???

Thanks!
Frank and Nannie Bethel in Kentucky 1833 to 1890s.

My great-grandmother, Florence Bethel Beyers, was born in Daviess County, KY in 1891. I know from family history that both of her parents died before she was 10. Nannie Bethel is listed in the 1900 Daviess County Census as a widow. Frank and Nannie, along with other children, are also listed on the 1880 census. Both report to have been born in Kentucky with both parents born in Kentucky. However, I have found no record of marriage for them. On the World Tree, there are two trees that state that Frank Bethel married Nannie Burns or Burnes, but no other information, no source and the different spelling of the last names, along with incorrect death dates make me unsure if this is 100% correct. Also, even though the 1880 census states that Frank was born around 1833, I have been through endless census documents for Bethel and Bethell and find no other record of Frank in Kentucky. If anyone has any information on Frank/Francis/Franklin Bethel/Bethell and/or Nannie, parents, etc., I would be eternally grateful!

He was Thomas BETHEL he emigrated to the US and his children including Benjamin and his son Andrew Welch BETHEL were in Dane Co, Wisconsin at least in 1880, as he appeared on the Census.

Some years ago there were postings on this site about this family and I would like to hear from anyone connected to this side of the family.

The BETHEL family originated from Lydney in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire. If anyone is interested in any other members of the family and gets in touch we can add to one anthers data.

My email address is rgs3238@tiscali.co.uk.

Russ SMITH
Leicestershire England

Bethel, Margaret in 1929 Richmond, Virginia yearbook

RE: The Marshallite, 1929 John Marshall High School yearbook (Richmond, VA)

Bethel, Margaret
Bethel, Margaret Elizabeth (Marg)

This yearbook lists the members of the Senior class of 1929, faculty members, members of the Corps of Cadets, and many members of various clubs (not all). Unfortunately, it does not list the names of the members of the Junior, Sophomore or Freshmen classes (only officers listed for those classes).

I extracted all of the names (& some other information) from the yearbook & have put them on my genealogy web site (total of 13 web pages, containing over 1,900 records; sorted alphabetically by surname).

The link to the first page of these extracts on my web site is:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/family/r...

Or it can be accessed through the "General Research" link on the main page at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Please note that I put all kinds of genealogy information on my web site, not just data about the families I am researching. I hope the information I've put online helps someone with their research . . .

Susan :)
Sassytazzy's Online Genealogy Research Library
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

BETHEL - NEWSPAPERS

Hi: For the past few months, I have been typing Barry Co., MO, newspaper items. I now have posted the years 1890 through 1914. And in among the listings there were a lot of Bethel surnames given.

I am typing the 1915 papers now and when I have the project finished it will go through 1921. But there are already a lot of papers listed and tons of information that will interest researchers of Barry Co., MO and the surrounding areas.

There is a search engine on the front page, and you will probably need it - but if you just want to walk through them, then just go down the page and you will see listed the Barry Co., MO Newspaper project.

Here is the link:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~haddockfamily/index...

Donna

James Bethel, early 1800s, Henderson Co KY

Are any Bethel/Bethell researchers familiar with James Bethel who settled early in Henderson Co KY (there by 1810, I think)? I have in my line a Garton B. Petty b.1828 in KY; one Petty researcher indicates he is the son of Sandefur Petty and an unknown Bethel. Garton's middle name is said to be Bethel.

James Bethel and Sandefur Petty were witnesses to an 1821 deed in Henderson Co KY involving John, Pinckney and Peter Petty.

Would be interested to know more about any relationship between Bethel and Petty families, or info on daughters of James Bethel. Thanks.

Bethel Sarah (b. 1847) and Mary Bethel - Rhode Island and Florida

In searching the U. S. Pension records for Samuel Shaw, whose second wife was Sarah Bethel whom he married in 1890 in DeSoto Co., Fla., there was an Affidavit [filed on June 29, 1897] of Two Witnesses filed on Sarah Shaw's behalf by Mary Bethel, age 57, from Ashton, Rhode Island, and Edward Markham, age 60, from same said Ashton, R.I., county of Providence, R.I. "We have know the above "Sarah" widow of Samuel Shaw, for some 15 years, living in the village of Berkeley, R. I., with her and know that she was never married previous to her marriage with the above named Samuel Shaw. If this was a sister of Sarah Shaw whose maiden name was Bethel, why would they have known Sarah only 15 years? Maybe a cousin whose family moved west...Samuel Shaw was from Nebraska and had many Missouri connections... actually Samuel was 68 and Sarah 43 when he divorced his wife of 47 years in Nebraska and moved to Florida!
I am searching for information about my grandparents -- Robert A. Bethel, b.1858 d. 1919, married to Jane Harrold, b. 1859, d. 1947. I believe they were from Pennsylvania. They had 10 children: Carl Leroy; Bessie Lucinda; Charlie Ross; Lena Naomi; Willis Vernon; Blanche Gertrude; Joseph Evans; Vera Grace; Alice Waneta; and an infant girl who died. My grandfather, Willis Vernon, lived in Flushing, OH, and later in Clinton, IO, Watertown, SD, and Marianna, FL. I'm not certain of our connection to the other Bethels mentioned in this forum, but any information is appreciated.

George Bethel b. Ireland d. Oregon & Thomas Bethel b. Ireland lived & died in San Francisco, California

We have determined that George Henry Bethel, probably spent 1885-1887 in CA before moving to Coos Co. Oregon. in 1887. Purchasing property from his Brother Thomas W. Bethel of Sanfrancisco in 1892. George was born in Ireland. . . and would have been 25 when he got to California, 27 when he got to OR so his brother Thomas W. Bethel was probably born in Ireland also. Thomas was in the San Francisco City Directories every year from 1890 - 1911/12 issue. Did he die in the line of duty as a police officer or move/retire?

I have a marriage certificate where George Bethel and Elizabeth Freund got married in Coos. Co Oregon.

I am also speculating that since Elizabeth's father Fred Freund was the Constible of Crescent City CA in 1884/85 and owned property in Port Orford Oregon some time after that and George's brother Thomas who originally owned the land in Coos Co. OR (right up the road, even in a horse & buggy) has been "found in Sanfrancisco" after 1892 on the Police department. That these two men (Fred and Thomas) may have known each other prior to Freds Daughter Elizabeth and Thomas's Brother George marrying and since the main entertainment of the time was at the Grange Hall where Fred played fiddle on Saturday Nights. . .I think that the probability of Liz and George meeting was pretty much inevitable

Since Georges death certificate was filled out by Hospital Staff instead of family . . his parents were listed as "Unknown" So now I am in search of the Family of Thomas W. Bethel of San Francisco who on the hospital records from 1907 was listed as Georges Brother, with a San Francisco Address.

I also have a photo that says "Bethel Family" on the back . . . it is not the family of George (At least not the adult George with wife and family). . . so it is probably the family of Thomas. Or maybe yet their family back in Ireland. (It is NOT a city picture). .

I would TRULY love to find the San Francico Thomas W. Bethel's family connection!!!

BETHEL - Sheffield Flood 1864

Hi

I am researching the Sheffield Flood (12th March 1864) and am trying to locate the graves of as many of the victims as possible, with a view to then further researching their family line. One of the poor victims was William BETHEL (possibly BETHNEY) from Masbro’.

William died at the Limerick Wheel near Malin Bridge, a crinoline wire manufacturing unit, occupied by Messrs. Barker and Johnson. It was some weeks later before his body was found in the works beneath a heap of rubbish. It was disfigured and badly scalded so it is thought a large explosion occurred when the flood waters rushed in and hit the red hot furnace.

Does anyone, by any chance, think William may be related to their family line? If so, please supply any information. Thanks to all in anticipation of your reply.

Best Regards
Karen Lightowler
Doncaster, S Yorkshire, England
Mt. Vernon, Illinois Bethel family

Trying to find any information on Geraldine Bethel, born 7/13/33 in Mt. Vernon, IL. She lived her later years in Colorado, had four children (Nina, William, Roberta, Charles). She passed away 10/8/93. Have no information on her parents, though her mother was still living into the 1980s, possibly in IL. Believe she had a half-brother, but don't know his name. She had an Aunt Lizzy (from St. Louis) on her mother's side. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

George Bethel and Thomas Bethel - From Ireland of San Francico and Oregon

Bethel's who were Rhode Island Indians

Hi! My dad grew up on Bethel St. in Warwick, Rhode Island. I've been told that Chief Massasoit of the Wampanog tribe of Indians is in our family tree. Our name, Bethel, meaning "House of God" was chosen from the from the Bible by one of our grandfathers. I am just beginning my search of our family heritage for my children. I have an uncle still living in Rhode Island and would like to follow any leads in regards to the Bethel lineage. Any replies would be appreciated.

I am searching for a man, a man who is my biological father. I was born in 1969 and was told he died in 1971 from som kind of cancer. I know that he has other children in, I believe, GLens Falls, NY. I only want to know what he died from, when, and the family medical history. I was not raised knowing he was my "father"--I have a family and do not wish to interfere in their lives, but need some vital information, which may be life threatening. Please, if anyone has any information, please email me. Thank you.

He began another 'family' in New York (from which union came my grandfather) and eventually abandoned that family too, and was last known to be living in California (LA area).
We would appreciate any information on his early years in Ohio or his later years in California, or wherever.

My father Thomas Andrew Crawford was born in Ireland in 1904. His birth certificate references a place called Legnacrave in County Monaghan. He had relatives in Belfast. His father James S. Crawford was born in England in 1863 and died in Ireland in 1909 and his mother Sarah Jane Bethel was born in Scotland in 1860 and died in Ireland in 1908. Both are buried in Clontibret in County Monaghan. I was told my father stayed with relatives in Belfast when his older brother William immigated to the US. Later my father joined his brothers, Fred and John, and his sisters, Amelia and Margaret in the Illinois area. Another name on the family gravestone in Ireland is William and Grace Mollan. I am not sure what their relationship is to my grandparents. I was in Ireland several years ago and visited the cemetery and I am returning in October. I was hoping to gather more information before my trip. Does this information coincide with anything that you may have?

E-mail address: tomcrawfor@aol.com
