Peggy,

Good to hear from you.

Donna is your best bet to contact living members of the Bethel family. I'm looking forward to connecting with descendants of Elizabeth (Lizzie) Hodkin and David Bethel. I'm related to them through Lizzie's mother Alma Hodkin (nee Haslam) and can connect them with other Haslams.

I found the Bethel family immigrating on the ship Cambroman from Liverpool to Montreal in 1900. I also found Samuel and Margaret in the 1916 Manitoba census in Springfield, Manitoba. And through Manitoba vital statistics, I found the number of Samuel's 1919 death notice in Beausejour, Registration Number: 1919-018000. It's possible that death notice might have more information. You might check Manitoba vital statistics website for Margaret's death notice, too.

Lizzie Hodkin's family immigrated from England to Manitoba in 1893, and by 1901, Lizzie was living with the Shaw family in Winnipeg. The Shaw family had a daughter of a similar age, Phoebe. Phoebe married William Bethel in February, 1903. Lizzie married his brother David Bethel in July, 1903. I don't think the Shaws and the Hodkins had been related to each other until that point. However, both Lizzie and Phoebe were born in Derbyshire.

I hope that's helpful. My research is on the Ancestry website - the Robinson Haslam Smith tree.

Cheers,
Gerry
I have Bethel ancestors and I am looking for information about the family. I know they lived in the Selkirk district of Manitoba, Canada. Samuel Bethel and Margret (nee Black ???), had five sons David (1874), William (1878), Joseph, James, and Samuel that I can find on census records. Country or origin is listed as Ireland. I haven't been able to track them back before they moved to the Brokenhead subdistrict of Manitoba, Canada.
The family apparently migrated to the east Selkirk area at different times (1890s), but all were there by the 1901 census. I have not found any subsequent info on Joseph or James, but I did find info on David, William, and Samuel.
Census record links (1901 to 1911) show that David married Lizzie and had children Lizzie, Alma, Martha, and James. William married Phoebe and they had children Cora, William, and Leonard. This info seems to fit with info from you and dcmowat.
I am looking for any information about the Bethel origins, and present day family and any information on Margret.

Peggy
Minnesota, USA
Your story matches some research that I've done. A cousin that I've been researching, Elizabeth Hodkin (b. 1874), immigrated from Derbyshire, England to Selkirk, Manitoba (near Beausejour) and married David Bethel, who is the brother to William Bethel. I would like to be in touch. Canadian records after 1911 are a mystery...
Gerry
Portland, Oregon USA

Mamie Bethel (nee Bacigalupo) was my great-grandmother. She was born in NYC around 1872, died in 1914. She married Ernest Bethel from the Bahamas. He had a sponge importing business and travelled back and forth between NYC and Nassau, Bahamas. They had five children, I have the names of four:
Walter, born 1889, Millie, 1892, Emma, 1894, Ernest Jr., 1900. All were born in NYC except Ernest Jr., who was born in the Bahamas.

I ask because I have a Sarah Ann Bethel who married a Joseph Farquhar and were living in County Monaghan, Ireland in 1871. I don't know if she was from that area or if they moved, but I have been trying to track them down and it's hard from the states.

Thanks!
Amy

I know that part of the Bethell's from Warrick Co. crossed the Ohio river to Ky.

Quite a bit of the Ind. Bethells is in the book by James and Carol Gard which was an update of his mothers records.

"The Early Bethells and their descendnats"

Beth

Sorry, Haven't been on here in a long time. Life, computer crashes, e-mail changes all take its toll. Anyway, the land was located south of Governors Harbour, just north of Palmetto Point. It was a pineapple farm, I guess, but when I saw it a few years ago, it was wilderness.
What did you find out when you went there?
Do you have a tree I could see? I have one on the net but it is in serious need of updating. You started by saying your GGgm was Sarah... I show her as Theresa Sarah Anne Wheeler Fipps Bethel. Would love to share more with you.
new e-mail: gandmbethel@shaw.ca
Gord

Drury Smith (b.1748) m. Martha Peyton/Martha Challis (w/Bethell/Bethel ties): VA>NC>TN

I am a descendant of Peyton Randolph Smith b. 1789 in Rockingham, NC, son of Drury Smith born 1748 (son of John Smith Sr, patriot of VA) and Martha Peyton. Both Drury & Martha were b. in VA, moved to Rockingham Co, NC after the Rev. war.
We (group of Smith family researchers) have recently had a mystery present itself -Drury's wife, Martha.
The name Martha Challis popped up thru another cousin, who is descended from Alexander Washington Smith & Martha C. Smith (Peyton R. Smith's dau), where the intial "C" stood for Challis in his records. (We haven't figured out the parentage for Alexander Washington Smith yet either, but it's not Peyton Randolph Smith because he says in his memoirs that he had six children, three boys and three girls and we have accounted for the three sons and their families.)
We didn't have the name Challis in our database. While searching for Martha Challis, I came across her as being a dau to Hugh Challis & Martha Wimbish of VA & Rockingham Co, NC, b: ABT 1762.
I then came across an entire tree branch that said Martha Challis m. Drury Smith and they had 2 children
Frances W. Smith, b.1794, m. Benjamin Jordan Bass
Martha "Patie" Smith, b. 1788, m. John Pinkney Bethell

Our information is that Drury Smith m. Martha Peyton Abt. 1778, that she was born Abt. 1756 in Virginia , and died Aft. 1820 in Tennessee . (Drury and Martha moved to Davidson County, Tennessee in 1807 according to their son, Peyton Randolph's memoirs.)
Children of Drury Smith & Martha Peyton-
Martha Smith, b.1779; m. John Bethell
Mariah Smith, b.1783; m. Thomas Bass
Frances Smith, b.1788; m. Benjamin Jordan Bass
Peyton Randolph Smith, b. 29 Nov 1789, Rockingham co, NC; m. Nancy. S. Bass
Lucinda Smith, b. 1792; m. Drury Smith of GA

We obviously have the same people- Drury & Martha, with the same 2 dau- Martha & Frances, who married the same 2 men- Benjamin Bass & John Bethell-
-EXCEPT that there are different birth years for Martha & Frances
Martha Smith b. 1788 vs 1779
Frances Smith b. 1794 vs 1788
-AND we have the name Martha Peyton, the others have the name Martha Challis as Drury's wife.
Also, the birth years for Martha Peyton & Martha Challis are different
Martha Peyton, b. About 1756 in VA - Martha Challis, b. AB 1762

And as far as we can tell, Drury was married only once. Our DAR information on Drury Smith lists his wife as Martha Peyton. If Drury Smith married Martha Challis as a second wife, we have no information about it.

My research puts Martha Challis (widow of Hugh & mother to Martha) and her son John Challis in Rockingham Co, NC in 1790 & 1800, at the same time our Drury Smith, born 1748, lived there.

Other problems:
Peyton Randolph Smith was supposed to be named after his mother's Peyton family; "Patie" or "Peytie" is a common nickname for Peyton in our Smith family;
In Peyton Randolph Smith's autobiography he talks about living "in a strange land" (Davidson County, TN) with his "old baptist mother"- he specifically refers to her as his mother, not step-mother;
We know Peyton Randolph Smith was b. in 1789 and, depending on which years the 2 listed sisters were actually born, he would be younger than them. So if Martha Challis had been a 2nd wife to Drury, she would most likely have been Peyton's mother as well & he wouldn't have been named after Martha Peyton's family.
Or so it seems to me anyway...

Does anyone have any information on this or any of these individuals???

Thanks!
Hi,

I am looking to find the baptism of John Bithell. I have the marriage record of him marrying Sarah Morgan on 23 May 1697 at Eccleshall, Staffordshire. One year later they had their 1st of three children in Seabridge, Staffordshire (about 10 miles from Eccleshall). I have no idea where or when he was baptised but i have searched the nearby parish records and can't find his baptism. Can anyone please help??

www.bithellfamilytree.com

Thanks

Mark

You are looking at the same Cantrell/Bethel line as I am. My great grandfather was Cantrell Bethel Kennedy, born about 1826 in TN. His father was James Kennedy in Weakley Co., TN, in 1820s and 1830. In 1840 he is in Greene Co., Arkansas. IN 1850 only God knows where he was!!!Cantrell and brother George were still in Greene Co. in 1850 then George disappears. CBK lived his entire life in Ark. Green Bethel is son of Sampson and Mary Cantrell and is in Carroll Co., TN, in 1830. Another son was Cantrell Bethel who is in Weakley Co., in 1840. I am looking for a Kennedy/Canady/Canada connection with this family.

Dear Gordon,

Sarah Ann Wheeler Phipps Bethel was my GGgrandmother. She was living in Key West at the time of the 1885 Florida Census. My GGrandfather was Robert James Pent. He married Clementine Rosamond Bethel in Governor's harbor. She died after the birth of their 4th child and she was buried in Key West in 1874. My grandfather was Arnold VanDyke Pent who was the 2nd child. He does not show up on any records of Key West until 1885.As far as I can see, he lived in Governor's Harbor unti he moved to Key West with his grandmother Theresa .. Bethel. In the 1885 florida census she is listed as Theresa Bethel - mother-in-law.

I will be going to Eleuthera May 1, 2007. Do you know of anything that I can look up while I am there. I do know that the records are mainly in Nassau. Do you know where their Pineapple Plantation was located? I don't know that it was actually a plantation, but, that is what is was called in the family.

Thanks,

Hi Gordon,

I saw your earlier posts on the Ancestry message board for Bethel; hope this reaches you. I am trying to sort out the Bethel lines from Bermuda and the Bahamas, in hopes of identifying my branch. It looks as if there were family members in both places; some may have gone back and forth.

My 3rd great-grandmother was Edith Bethel, b. about 1739 in Bermuda. Her death date is given in various places as 1785, 1793, and 1806; I know there was an Edith Claxton of the right age who died in the Bahamas in 1806. Edith married 1st, Benjamin Clark, and 2nd, Chaddock Claxton, both in Bermuda. At least three of her children ended up in the Bahamas: Benjamin Clark Claxton, Esther Clark Claxton (1st wife of George Butler, who came to Nassau about 1790) and Frances Claxton Gibson (2nd wife of George Butler; these are my g-g-grandparents). I have the Butler line well-documented, but am weak on the Bethel line (as well as the Claxtons).

Do you have any information on Bethels/Bethells who may have lived in Bermuda? Or any suggestions or ideas that might point me in the right direction? I would really appreciate help you might offer.

Sincerely,
Carol Butler Todd
