I am trying to prove the following line: neill McLeod & Sarah Bethune born Isle of Skye- came to Cape Fear had son John that married Catherine Fletcher 1788 and had following children Mary ,malcolm,Neil,Marron, john.Charles E. James(my g grandfather born in SC in1813),Nancy Cornelius. James,Charles , Cornelius were Methodist preachers in Alabama. Can you shed any more light on this? Any information is so helpful.
There are so many with the same names it is hard to keep straight.
Dorothy

From all my research I believe my Great Grandfather James McLeod was the son of John McLeod born 1774(about) in the Isle of Skye and Catherine Fletcher. This John was the son of Neill McLeod and Sally Bethune and they came from the Isle of Skye to the Cape Fear region befor 1783. Neill's will 1818. He died in Spivey Corner,Sampson Co.NC.
John married Catherine 1788 . Does this sound possible to you. My g-granfather James was born 1813 in S>C. I have his life story if you have any interest let me know.
Dorothy

I do not have a spouse for Neill and Sallie's son John. Ophelia McLeod Wright said he had a son named John Washington, but offered no documentation or other information. I did find a John McLeod living in Sampson county in the 1820 census, but am not sure it's the right one. The Bible page I have is for Neill's son Malcolm and it was quite obviously filled out much later. (The copyright date is AFTER the birth dates listed). but here it is. Sorry, it's not a better copy.

my research indicates that Neill and Sallie's son Malcolm was born in Sampson County NORTH Carolina March 29, 1785. This is based on census and tax records. The will is dated 1818 and was probated in Sampson County. I'll be glad to share all my info, but I'm having a bit of trouble with the ulnar nerve in my left arm and hand pinkie and ring fingers are numb, which makes keyboarding difficult. Feeling seems to be returning, but I don't want to push it .. hopefully in a few more days I can get back to work ...

Kay McLeod

Hello, JMGTMorgan. I think David Bethune was my great-grandfather on my mother's side. He is cited as the "bride's father, Deceased, Printer" in a record of the wedding of my grandmother Annie Ethel Matthews (nee Bethune; widow of Alf Matthews)to Edward Francis Jones, my granddad.
Just saw your 2010 post ... hope you're still searching because I would like to compare findings. I am descended from Neill and Sarah's youngest son Malcolm, his youngest son Angus and his eldest son John Bethune McLeod. I'm just sending off a request to the NC Archives to see if I can get an actual copy of Neill's will which was probated in 1818. I'll be happy to share with you. Kay McLeod Stafford

My family are Beaton/Bethune, sometimes being born Bethune , marrying as Beaton and reverting back in Census entries. If you pronounce the name Beaton with the accent of a gaelic speaker, a listener, perhaps the local registrar of births deaths and marriages, might think that the speaker was saying Bethune and vice versa, it really dos not sound too different. I have heard the theory that some Bethunes were French but I don't think that was the case, not in the Scottish Highlands anyway. The spelling of the surname was not terribly important to gaelic speaking people anyway - they were more likely known by their nick names, James fair, Effy the orphan etc (this woould of course be in Gaelic, not in English).

Anna G. Bethune
Monroeville

Anna Gertrude "Anne" Bethune, 97, of Monroeville and Level Green, passed on with her family by her side, at home Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011. Anne was born April 22, 1914, in Patton Township, the daughter of the late German immigrants Ferdinand and Katherine (Weiner) Hohmann, who were amazing. Anne was the sweetest, kindest, most giving lady, with twinkling eyes and a smile for everyone. People always told us, "Her smile lights up the whole room!" Anne loved to dance, ballroom and square dancing. Once on a dare she even danced on stage at Busch Gardens! Her energy and enthusiasm was an inspiration. She celebrated her 90th birthday at Disney World. As a girl Anne worked on the family farm and sold produce door-to-door (eventually becoming Hohmann's Market). After graduation from St. Colman's, Anne also worked at Westinghouse. She was our very own "Rosie the Riveter" during World War II, making and testing components for submarines in glove boxes underwater. Her and her late husband, Roy, were instrumental in getting signatures for the first elementary school in Level Green. Above all, my mother was dedicated to her family and to Love. In addition to her parents, Mum was predeceased by sisters and brothers, Minnie McCracken, Louise Hohmann, Rose Storey, Marie Platz, Tillie Storey, Fritz and Joe Hohmann; and husband, Roy Bethune. She is survived by Linda Susan Bethune; and grandsons who adore her, Michael and Jack; a loving niece, Darlene Marcoz; a special "son", Dr. Thomas Wolf; and wonderful friend, Elaine Drakulic. My mother taught and guided me. "Work hard, do the right things and smile." She will always be deeply missed and carried forever in our hearts and minds. All our love to you, Mum. Family and friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday the JOHN M. DOBRINICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 702 7th St., Route 130, Trafford, Parting prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home followed by a funeral Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Regis Church, Trafford, with Father John Harrold as celebrant.
(Pennsylvania - Pittsburgh Tribune)
I am wondering the same thing. I have Beaton ancestors in Big Sandy, TN in the 1800's who say they were born in NC. Can't find any Beatons by their first names in NC, but do find a lot of Bethunes with the same first names. I'm beginning to think they were the same people who started spelling their name Beaton, but don't know why.

Pam,

I am very interested in exchanging data with you, as I am descended from Jacob Hill Bethune's parents-in-law: William Hall (1795-1869) and Susanna (Glunt) Hall (1799-1842), but via a sister of Jacob Hill Bethune's wife, Christina (Hall) Bethune (1821?-1891)).

I must give you the bad news, however. I have not yet been able to find the parents of Henry Gilmore Bethune and Lena Sarah (Hill) Bethune, but I haven't really looked that hard, either, since that is not my direct line. (I do have data on Lean Sarah (Hill) Bethune's parents and siblings, however, that I would be happy to share.)

Since my limited Ancestry account does not let me contact you via Ancestry and since I don't know your e-mail address, please send me a note at my e-mail address: fbm3gene3ATverizon.net. I look forward to exchanging data with you.

Floyd

Well hello there Andrew,

Are you another descendant of Alexander Bethune the Gameskeeper? There are quite a number of Alexander Bethunes. Who did your Margaret Bethune marry? Did your Daniel pass away before 1891? I think that the census in 1881 showing children Daniel and Margaret is the same family but let me check my old notes. I will dig out the 1891 and 1901 census info I have showing the Bethune family that I am interested in and post it. By 1901, neither Alexander nor his sister Margaret are living with the family.

Regards,
Margaret
