Southern Christian Academy CSA Memorial ? Pleasant Mound Public Cemetery, Dallas Co., Tx

I am trying to find out more information about 4 CSA markers at Pleasant Mound Public Cemetery

I contacted Southern Christian Academy and they do not have any records that show why these CSA markers were placed at Pleasant Mound Public Cemetery (Scyene Rd and Buckner in Dallas). They said it may have done as a memorial for the CSA Veterans . There are several other members of the 6th Scyene buried there. None of the men below are listed in the cemetery book as burials.

There is a Flag pole beside these stones that at one time I have been told flew the Confederate "Stars and Bars".On the flag pole is a small sign that says “Property of Southern Christian Academy”

Isaac N. Terry and James Monroe Leach are buried at Abby Frost Cemetery in Mesquite. A 1966 extraction of the tombstones does not list Monroe Leach’s tombstone but it is shown on another one taken in 1999, when it was “found” and repaired is unknown. A Dallas Morning News (Monday, June 13,1983) artical states that another stone was found and repaired by Cub Scout Pack 149 but does not mention Leach's stone.

TERRY, Isaac N.
29 Jun 1836 Texas Pvt 6 Scyene Co. C. S. A.
12 Oct 1889

LEACH, Monroe
28 Sep 1818
22 May 1881
Texas Pvt 13 Brig Militia C. S. A.

Betherum and Elam are brother-in-laws and are thought to have been buried at the now “lost” Elam family Cemetery, that is thought to have been located near 175 (Hawn Freeway) and Jim Miller

BETHERUM, Benjamin F.
24 Feb 1824 (Franklin)
5 Mar 1872
Texas Pvt 6 Co 13 Brig C. S. A.

ELAM, Benjamin F.
26 Apr 1834 (Franklin)
21 Feb 1900
Texas 4 Cpl. 13 Brig Scyene Co. C. S. A.

I have been told there was a fifth marker but I did not find it the last time I visited the cemetery a year ago this month. The city now mows the cemtery but provides little as far as other upkeep so it may have sunk below the surface.

James Monroe Leach is my great-great-grandfather. I am just curious about the history of this "memorial".

Well Loren...
I certainly thank you for putting this here !
I really can't help, but since I descend from the Miracle family I do know that they lived in Lee Co., VA before moving to Knox Co., KY.
Since fella's usually marry home town gals, I would have to suppose Margaret's family was in the Lee Co., VA area also. John Miracle is on 1810 Lee Co. VA tax list, but in looking the only Issac I find under the letter "B" names is an Isaac Burgin & no Benjamin's at all.
I had tried the name Betheren in census & only found 3 in all time anywhere. So had figured this spelling had gotten changed.
The Merckel/Maricle/Miracle family lived in Northampton, PA. before coming to VA., wonder if there could be any connection in PA? They came from Germany in 1710.
Thank you again for sharing your work !
Dusty Pilgrim

My grandma, Lucy Mae Bethurem Carter, who is now dead was adopted by the Bethurem's. My Aunt and my mother can give me specific details and names and spelling and locations that i do not have. She was born in 1905 and it was such a big hush hush thing back in those days that we do not know as yet her natural parents name. The Bethurems who adopted her did come from Germany. My grandma married a Bob Carter from Canyon Texas. "Dove" sounded like an Indian name and my Grandma looked Indian. I will get more details from my Mother and Aunt. I sure would love to find out who her real parents were she had always wanted to find out.

Maxine

I was born in Cincinnati in 1950. I don't have positive proof yet, but it appears that I'm related to David Porter, brother of Robert Porter. I believe these were twin brothers.
My father was Charles Bethurum, grandfather, Ray Owen Bethurum.

I believe that Margaret was not he child of Benjamin Bethurum b:ca1755. The information that I have on her is that she was married in Virginia in 1808. I think that she was the daughter of Isaac Bethurum, brother of Benjamin Bethurum, who emigrated at the same time as Benjamin.

The information that I have found indicates that the John Miracle that married Margaret Bethurum was born in 1788. They were married Feb 26 1808 in Lee Copunty, VA. At his time I have only found one child, a son named William born ca 1812. There are probably more children.

Bethuram info.

Hello Diane!

I don't have any information regarding Ray or Charles Bethuram but I do know that my Grandfather was from Northern Kentucky/Southern Indiana. His name was Merideth Maxine Bethuram with the nickname of "Mac", and was married to Mary Whalen.
Mac had the following children with Mary Whalen:
Merideth Eugene (Gene),Vicky,Micky,Gary, and Vaughn. Mac died in 1999 at the age of 83 I believe.

My father is Merideth Eugene Bethuram and grew up in Richmond, IN.

I do know that my father has a half sister named Linda Bethuram who lives in Indiana and has traced our ancestry back to the 1700's. I plan to try and contact her to get some information on the Bethurams.

Hope this helps!
