Hello Clare
We are probably related further back. Our line seems to alternate between John and Robert (eldest sons). Our Robert was born in 1802. His father was John Bett born 1775 and his mother was Jean Stewart born 1780. Our John Bett is buried with his wife Catherine in Leuchars.
regards
John Newman

This is very interesting. I think you're right. My ancestor Robert Bett (son of John Bett and Catherine Cunningham moved to New Zealand in about 1855. He apparently lived iwth his brother Daivid Bett in Wanganui. John Bett, possibly a borther or cousin was also in Wanganui at that time and in business (timber and metal trades) in Wanganui with an Andrew Robertson who may have been a cousin.
Catherine Cunnungham's parents were James Cunningham and Margaret Nicoll, both from Fife and born in the 1760s. Catherine had two sisters but neither of them were called Isabella. You might be right about hte brothers. In my family, the first born sons were alternately John and Robert so if John was the eldest brother, the next would be Robert and vice versa. Do you want my email address?
Hi there,

We may have a link somewhere and I have several John and Robert Betts in my line.

I have a John Bett marrying an Isabella Cunningham (rather than Catherine). John was born in 1792. They have a son Robert, although I have no dates or further information on him. I have John's father as John Bett married to an Ann Robertson. I'm descended from another of their sons, David. Most of the Bett family 'events' from around the 1780s in my family were in Leuchars.

I wonder if the Robert Bett in 1775 is the brother of John Bett (husband of Ann Robertson). The timelines would be correct for that, I think.

Cheers,
Clare

I am descended from BETTs in Fifeshire. They mostly were in Leuchars. Robert Bett (born 24May 1829) was my ancestor. He migrated to New Zealand and married Mary Burnett. His parents were John Bett and Catherine (nee Cunningham). His grandfather was Robert Bett born probably in 1775 in Fife, Scotland, he married Jean Stewart in 1802, probably in Fife.

Hello, I have the same g.grandfather, I don't know much but one of there daughters was my grandmother her name was Gertrude. She married Harry Snell of London, England and had Six childern, one being my mother Isabel. Gertrude died in 1958. I have been told that one winter in Winnipeg she helped the family survive because she was such a good shot. My cousin still has the shot gun and it is registered as a historical item.
Like you I am trying to find more information about my family and I suppose we are related. My cousin's all seem to have more info than I as I grew up in California and did not have much contact until I moved back to Canada.
Regards
Don E

Dear Carolyn, I am currently viewing the South Willingham Registers at my Local Family History Centre. I found Ben's death on 2nd August 1782. He was a farmer.
Ben's parents were Thomas Bett and Mary Horncastle. I am going to copy their marriage next week and could attach a copy for you. I believe Thomas was previously married to another Mary, Mary Grime.Thomas was born at East Barwith on 8th August 1863. His father was also Thomas. Mary was born at Covenham St Mary. Her parents were Jon Horncastle and Elizabeth.I have only recently started to research this family and was given some other information from Joan (Canada) who is a descendent of Lucy, Ben's sister.
Cheers
Caimein

Leroy Betts

He's on the SSDI. I copied this from a previous post:

http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi

You can send for their Social Security Application. Click on the "SS-5" link to the right of their name. RootsWeb will format a letter to the Social Security Administration for you. All you have to do is print it and send it. It costs $7 and takes 6 - 8 weeks for them to get back to you.

The application will have the person's birth date, place and name (invaluable for women, usually moot for men, unless they were later adopted and changed their name). It also has mother's maiden name, father's name and then-current address. People did this themselves, so if he/she thought she/he was born 04 June 1900, that is what would be there, even if the true date were 04 July 1902. The mother's maiden name may be mis-spelled, too.
