Looking specifically for information on Jose Correa Bettencourt married to Anna de Nascimiento (Anna possibly also used the surname Braga). Both born somewhere near 1860. Possibly in Fajia de cima, Ponta Delgada, St. Michael.

This is a long short but I'm going to try.

My grandfather, from my father, is a Bettencourt, I do not know his name but I do know that I am 1/4 French and 3/4 Portugese. My father was born on the island of Pico on 29 July 1924, moved to the island of Faial to live with his aunt and uncle, until he was sent to a foster home in Lisboa. Years are unknown, my father never spoke of his family as his mother and father were never married. His mother, name unknown, was a Dutra from the island of Faial.

I took a trip out to Horta, Faial, in late May 2010, to try to locate birth records but was unsuccessful as the books had been returned to Faial. I wasn't there but a couple of days, so a return trip is in the future.

Like I said, this may lead no where but I'm trying to find any family history that I am able. If anyone knows any piece of this information, I would love to hear it. You can write to me at: grammylu@charter.net. I live in Central California.

Good morning, I have made great strides in getting detail from my father's cousin Gloria (Tony's daughter), last living at the homestead off DeBettencourt's circle in Oak Bluffs. Tony is a younger sibling to my grandfather Frank. My initial post was partial because of my father mother's direction to me that our ancestors may be 'listed' under Bettencourt vs DeBettencourt. there were rumors that my ancestors (father's side) changed their name from Bettencourt to gain acceptance(?) I have seen some overlap here, but nothing concrete so far. Manuel is the 1st generation is my family here. His parents moved to the Vineyard.

My great Grandfather is Manuel Spindola DeBettencourt; one of his children 2nd live birth of 12 (including still borns/miscarriages) was Frank Henry DeBettencourt who is my father; Fred William DeBettencourt's father. I got a great deal of detail during my visit a few years back to my gr grandfather's /the "Spindles" homestead..... some clarity: an entirely different line aka "Bulldogs" of DeBettencourts originated through Oak Bluff/ Martha's Vineyard as well. Different line as far as I can tell from my research and the book that my Aunt has (limited copies) that was published with genealogy lines detailed. It is near complete up to my father's generation, published over six years ago now. My siblings and I were incomplete/incorrect, understandable since this was a vast undertaking by the island. the book actually had photos from when my great grandfather Manuel hosted the annual Holy Ghost 'revival' He had the property and it was a highly attend event on the island, especially then.
Additional photos in the book of the homestead in operation. Silo, etc.

Being the younger of my siblings, I only caught bits and pieces of the history. We vacationed on the Cape annually through my childhood. I have some detail from my father's mother: Alice Edna Durant DeBettencourt Herman.....she passed when I was in college 1989 (I was 18 yrs) and was just getting my family research started. I do have recordings of my chats with her during her last years, but it's muffled due to the compressor for the bed she was bound to at that time. I did not take written notes because it was easier to simply allow her to recall events and I had expected to replay and record, she didn't like me writing while we 'talked'. Unfortuately due to the quality and the background noise it was diffcult to review.

My great grandfather was Manuel (Emanuel) Bettencourt, he married Lucy Silva (Portugal 1850). I just know of their one daughter Mabel Elizabeth Bettencourt (1906) who married James Wesley Thacker (1901). They had two sons Robert Thacker (1920's) and my father James Dale Thacker (1946).

I am looking for more information on Bettencourt and Cunha's. I am new to this site so I am not sure how it works. If you can view others family tree. Mine is The Joyce Family Tree. My great grandfather was Alfred Bettencourt, he had a couple brothers...Anthony...Joseph..and I believe a sister Maria (not sure about this). Their mother's name was Isabell Cunha De Freitas. I am not able to find her husband's name or anything on him. They divorced and she remarried a Munez (I think that is the correct spelling).
I know the family came from the Azores. They settled for a bit in New Bedford/Fall River area of MASS. Then my great great grandmother moved to Almeda County, CA.
Whether or not any of that side of the family stayed back East I don't know. Would love to find out.

The one I am looking for was born C. May (or Mary) Madeira in Alameda County 1876 and married J. Manuel Bettencourt. As of 1930 she was still living in San Leandro. Sons were Harry L and Earle Bettencourt.

My husband's ancestor was Rose Bettencourt married to Joseph Silvia, and first found living in Falmouth, with daughters, Flora, Lena, Serena, Lizzie and Mary in 1900. What has been passed down through the family is about Lena is she was born in Waquoit.
Today, we received a death certificate on one of Lena's children, which lists Lena's place of birth as Acushnet
The 1900 census shows Rose immigrated in 1885. I haven't been able to find any links for Rose prior to 1900. Lena's sister married to Ephraim Davis.

Well, Rocha is certainly a Portuguese name, although I believe it originated in France (from de Roche).

If it's of any interest, I am a decendent of a Rocha family line but our Portuguese family line originated in Setubal, Portugal (continental Portugal). All but my mother (her father is one of two Rocha brothers from whom we decend), her brother and one male cousin, are still in Setubal. My mother, her brother and all of us "kids" are in Canada (my son is 1st generation Canadian) and my mother's cousin, Rui, is in Germany.

04.12.05 - Steven Keith Bettencourt, 46, a native of Sonoma died April 8, 2005, in Sonoma.

He was a Boy Scout in Troop 9 obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He became a volunteer fireman soon after graduation from Sonoma Valley High School in 1976. He was also an emergency medical technician. He worked at Adobe Drug as a delivery driver while earning his degree in fire science to become a professional fire fighter. During this time he worked two years for the California Department of Forestry. He coached track at Sonoma Valley High School, worked for the ambulance service here in the Valley and at Sears Point Raceway (Infineon) for several years.

He joined the fire department at Mare Island Shipyard in Vallejo in 1986 until its closure, then moving on to the Department of Defense Logistics Agency in Tracy, Calif while at the D.O.D.L.A. he stepped up to be a fire inspector.

Steve was an avid Oakland Raiders Football and Athletics baseball fan. NASCAR auto racing and drag racing were also big favorites and was a member of the California Fireman Muster Association for nearly 30 years.

He was the devoted husband of Kari L. Bettencourt, loving son of Don Bettencourt, ret. Lt. Sonoma Police Department and the late Kay Bettencourt; adoring brother of Caryn L and Kathy A. Bettencourt; son-in-law of Marty C. Rice, Richard "Dick" and Carol Rice; brother-in-law of Kevin and Shiela Rice and Kim and Chris Lindell; nephew of Bob Bettencourt and Cox Thornton; uncle of Jason and Kyndra Menefee and Samatha and Cameron Rice. Hello. I'm looking for any information on my Bettencourt/Corea family.

My family used Bettencourt as their last name when they entered the United States from the Azores. They used the name Corea (with spelling variations Correa and Coreia) as a middle name at that time. Later they used the Corea as a last name and the Bettencourt as a middle name. Still later the Bettencourt began to be spelled with a P, as Pettencourt.

My great grandfather was Augustus Bettencourt Corea b. May 1884. D. Dec. 1921.

He was married to Lucy Siva b. 1885 and d. May 20, 1929.

My grandfather was Augustus Bettencourt Corea b. April 1907 D. Dec. 1973.

He had a sister Mary Pedro born 1909. D. 1968.

I also know that my great great grandfathers name was Joseph Corea (he also possibly used the Bettencourt name at some point) and his wife was Annie Braga.

Any help in finding out more information on my family, or explanation in regard to the use of the name Bettencourt in the Azores is very welcome
