Re: The other Side of the Betterly Family

I am probably related to this branch of the Betterleys. My grandmother (Jean Heller Moyer) always talked about our great - great..something grandparents, the Betterleys, and even took us out to the church at St. John's to see their graves when I was a kid (my grandparents lived in Hazleton and then White Haven). I was told the stories of how Mrs. Betterley served in the Revolutionary War with her husband. Our family version of the story had her working as a cook and getting flowers from George Washington himself! I would have to believe that my grandmother's great-grandmother was a Betterly named Anna Rebecca (in her obituary) or Sarah/Sallie Ann (as she is called on census records)who married Henry Woodring (who also came from the St. John's area). She would have to have been a daughter of George Betterly, son of William Carson Betterly and Ann Marshall Betterley (who was living with my ancestors when she was 100 years old, according to census records). Unfortunately, I can't seem to prove this connection, although one LDS record shows George having a daughter named Anna, the same age as my great....grandmother. I'm not familiar with any of the names on your post, do you know anyone further back in time? I haven't been able to get much info on this line of Betterlys past William Carson and Ann Betterly. Larry McGrath has some interesting information about them if you want it. Sorry I can't be of more help!

I have some odds and ends of information on George and his descendants, but, since that is a collateral line, I have never taken the time to enter any of it into my database. Have you? If so, would it be possible to get a GEDCOM, or a descendant chart or whatever for the descendants of George Betterly? I would be happy to provide similar information for the descendants of brother William. Or of some of the previous Betterly generations if you are interested.

How am i related to the Betterlys well thats a long line to go through
Well here it goes
My Great-Great-Great-great-great Grandfather was his son, George Betterly. Who was born in 1794 about 10 years after the war. He had a daughter named Mary, born in 1820. She married to Andrew Barnhart and they had at least 6 children. She has a daughter named Martha in 1843, she marries Germany immigrant Henry Nagel. After he died she takes her 4 children still living with her. One her 8 year old daughter (and my great Great grandmother) Kate. To Hazleton to live with her parents. She was still there in 1900 with 2 of her children, after her parents died

Mariruth,

It is my pleasure, I can't count how many times someone has helped me out over the last 15 years of researching.

As for documentation, I haven't been working on my husband's Betterley line for as long as my own, but I can offer the following:

(My husband's line splits off from yours with William Ward Betterley(1835-1899)brother to your George Warren Betterley (1815-1886)- sons of George Betterley (1790-1858)and Dimmis Whipple (1792-1864) - so I will start there)

First, let me say, you will find a wealth of Betterley information (including this line) on www.minnesotacousins.com
Also, look for more on John Alden and Priscilla Mullins on the Alden Kindred of America sight at www.alden.org - other Alden decendents include John Adams, John Quincy Admas, the poet Longfellow, Marilyn Monroe and Dan Quayle to name a few.

There is a bible record (The Dunklee Bible) transcribed which holds information on the Betterley's (located on the Minnesota Cousins website)I've copied it in below.

The Alden website lists the first three generations of Alden kindred on their website: http://www.alden.org/our_family/3generations.htm
which is taken from published works on the Alden descendency records. There is also a 5-genreation book out there thatI plan to get ahold of as well. This would connect our Dunklee bible data to the Alden data directly. (5th generation from John Alden and Priscilla Mullins is Thomas Betterley and Elizabeth Carson)

Loren Dahling (minnesotacousins.com)mentions some of her sources on her website and states that you can e-mail her to request all of them. I haven't done so yet, but I'm sure if you ask her she could provide you with a ton of primary sources.

Dunklee Bibles: (Copied from MinnesotaCousins.com)
I, Martha Bennett Betterley, do hereby certify that the statements made
in the generations below mentioned are a true and exact copy of the
family bibles owned by:
Mrs. Robert Dunklee, Regent DAR, #3 Chase St., Brattleboro, VT.

Fifth - Thomas Betterley, born November 17, 1723, Boston,
Massachusetts; died July 28, 1775, Boston, Mass.;
married Elizabeth Carson, born March 22, 1732,
Scotland; died August 7, 1775, residence Boston,
Massachusetts.
Married by the Rev. Henry Canor, Minister of King's
Chapel, Boston, Mass. on April 6, 1749.
Their children were:
Elizabeth, born January 16, 1750; died Feb.15,
1750.
Rev. Thomas, Jr., born April 28, 1751, baptized
May 8, 1751.
Elizabeth born April 4, 1754.
Rev. William Carson, born March 29, 1762,
baptized April 9, 1762.
George, born August 18, 1769.

Sixth - William Carson, born March 29, 1762, Boston, Mass;
died November 29, 1841, in Nutler, Luzerne County,
Pennsylvania; married to Ann Marshall, February 14,
1783, Trenton, New Jersey, born 1758 in Trenton;
died August 28, 1860, Butler, Luzerne County, Penna.;
residence Butler Luzerne County, Penna.
10th
Ninth - Gen. Albert Warren Betterley, born May 7, 1864 in
Centralia, Pennsylvania, living at 12 Edgehill Road,
New Haven, Connecticut.
Thank you so much for the information on Betterley. I did know we went back to the Mayflower somehow but I did not have it figured out. Do you actually have proofs to go along with the data and if so can I purchase a copy of them for my genealogy?
Also I will put you on so you can see my family tree if you can't. But it seems like you can see it since you saw the Betterley name.
I am going to let my brother, Morey Hitt, know about this great discovery too. He was a genealogist at one time and wrote a very fine book on the "Hitt's".
Thank you again for taking the time to give us this very special gift. You are wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!
Mariruth A. Kim

I don't know if you found your Mayflower connection yet, but you are related to John Alden and Priscilla Mullins of the Mayflower. (My husband's decends from this line as well).

George Warren Betterley is the son of George Betetrley (1790 - 1858) and Dimmis Whipple (1972-1864); George is the son of Thomas Betterley (1751-1836) and Lydia Warren (1754-1839); Thomas is the son of Thomas Betterley (1723-1775) and Elizabeth Carson (1732-1775; Thomas is the son of Thomas Betterley (1690-1728) and Elizabeth Alden (1695-1753), Elizabeth Alden is the daughter of William Alden (1669-1729) and Mary Drury (1672-1727); William Alden is the son of John Alden (1627-1679) and Elizabeth Phillips (1640-1695) - John Alden is the son of John Alden (1598-1687) and Priscilla Mullins (abt 1600-bef 1688) - both of the Mayflower.

Let me know if you are looking for more information on this line, I'm happy to help if I can.

Charissa

It does sound as if I am from George's Side. I grew up in drum and st johns. I do know that a few of the Williams Betterly (a few generations) served in the military. There are newspaper articles on them in the drums paper. My Aunt Evey has the info on that.

There are alot of here in St Petersburg florida as well.
If anyone is interested in family history for this side of the family, contact me and I can give you alittle overview and some names to check as well.

thanks for the reply. It was helpful. I guess I will have to take a little trip to the drums cemetary. (I used to play there as a kid) :-)

Hi Katrina,

I don't know how helpful this will be, but there is some information that I can give you. All the Betterlys in Luzerne County are descended from William Carson Betterly (29 Mar 1762 - 30 Nov 1841) and his wife Ann Marshall (1758 - 28 Aug 1860). They moved from Trenton NJ sometime between 1793 and 1800 settling first in Briar Creek, Columbia Co. They had 3 sons: Thomas (20 Sep 1784 - 18 Sep 1851), William (ca. 1792 - ca 1814), and George (27 Feb 1793 - 4 May 1874). By 1819, son Thomas had settled in Huntington Twp. while Wm Sr. and son George settled in Sugarloaf (later Butler Twp.). Son Wm died young and no information has come to light that would suggest that he ever married. So, it is generally true that the Betterlys to the west of the Susquehanna are descended from son Thomas while those to the East are descended from son George.

My ancestor is Thomas, so that is where I have concentrated my research. Your family is no doubt descended from son George. I have some notes on that family, but they are sketchy and not to be trusted. But, having said that, here are a few clues:

son George married Catherine Welck (various spellings). I believe they are buried at St Johns in Drums (as are father Wm Carson and mother Ann).

George had a son Thomas (ca 1825 - 30 Aug 1910) who married Henrietta Celiax (ca 1835 - 25 Jan 1902). They had a very large family. I think it is this family that you would want to look into.

Good luck with your research - I will be interested to hear what you learn.

If you are able to connect with William Carson Betterly, I have a lot of information to share with you.

Larry

Hi. I saw your post. I am very curious where you are related in the Betterley family tree. You have the Betterley name. My mother was Linda Betterley. Her father was Oliver Betterley. He was I think 65 or 66 when he died in 1990. He had a bunch of brothers and sisters. Rosie (nee Betterley) Feith, Anna (nee Betterley) Wynn, He had another sister Florence, Henry, Lester, etc. Do any of those relatives sound familiar. His father was George Betterley who was married to Annabelle Robinson. He died in the 20's in a tugboat accident.
Just curious.
Hi,

You have hit upon one of the great mysteries of the Luzerne branch of the family. We have a lot of stories about Ann, but few facts.

There is the story that Ann served in the Revolution. One version has her as Washington's cook, another as a nurse.

There is also the story that she and her husband not only served in the Revolution but also in the War of 1812. In fact, there are War of 1812 service emblems next to both of their graves to this day.

And, finally, there is the story that when she got her widows pension, she received her payment in gold and carried it around in a little bag (I like to think this story is true!)

What we do know about Ann is that she died 28 Aug 1860 at the age of 102 and is buried in St. John's Cemetery, Butler Twp., Luzerne Co., PA. and that she was born in New Jersey. She and William Betterly were married 14 Feb 1783 in Trenton.

The only information that we have about Ann prior to her marriage comes from her widow's pension application. In an effort to prove that she was the widow of William Betterly, she included in her application affidavits from some of her neighbors in Trenton. Ann Phillips declared that Ann Marshall (or Nancy as she was then known - Nancy being a nickname for Ann) served "at house work" for an aunt of Ann Phillips before their marriage. And that Willliam and Ann Betterly resided near to where Ann Phillips lived in Trenton. Jesse Roscow of Trenton knew her as Nancy Marshall before the marriage. Mary Yard was her neighbor in Trenton.

I have searched records in Trenton but have not found any information on Ann Marshall, although I have run across the names of some of the neighbors mentioned above.

As for her serving in the Revolution, there may be a grain of truth to that. At the time of their marriage, William was serving with the 7th Massachusetts Regiment stationed with the main army at Newburgh (on the Hudson, just north of West Point). He appears on a must roll there on 5 Feb, gets married in Trenton 120 miles away on the 14th and is back for the must roll dated 6 March. How would he have met someone from Trenton while serving in the army? Very possibly she was with the army in some capacity or maybe the daughter of someone who was with the army. Karl Goedecke in his 1935 article Corporal "William C. Betterly" in the Annals of the Sugarloaf Historical Association pretty well disproves the story that she was Washington's cook. But that does not mean that she was not with the army in some other capacity. The only thing I have found so far from that period is a reference to a Mr. Marshall, magazine keeper at West Point. Hardly proof of anything. Also, their first son Thomas was born 20 Sep 1784 - 3 months after his discharge from the army at West Point which suggests that she was with the army at least after their marriage.

The 1812 service is not to be believed. I think this comes from the fact that there was a William Betterly who served briefly in 1814, but this was undoubtedly the son of our William as this was a militia call-up and William Sr. at 52 and Ann at 56 were well beyond militia age.

If you would like to exchange additional information, please feel free to contact me. By the way, how are you related to William?

Larry McGrath

Re: Betterley or Betterly

I haven't found anything on these Betterleys since Canadian sources aren't as readily available to me. Did you mean they moved there in "late 1800" or "late 1800s"? While studying the American census records, I've noted that the vast majority of Betterleys and Betterlys are descended from the Massachusetts family that first spread to Vermont, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire. Then most notably to New York, Michigan, Maine, Ohio, Minnesota/Wisconsin, and California. However, there are some of this surname that were listed in the census as from England, and quite a few from Germany. Perhaps yours was one of these. With names like George and Samuel, however, I wouldn't bet on Germany.

Have you been able to come up with any more clues? There was a Samuel Betterley and family that appeared in the 1860 Ohio census that I then lost track of. I've speculated that he was the son of George Betterley and Dimmis Whipple who died in Otsego County, New York. No proof, though. 1860 census for Ashtabula, Ashtabula, OH:

Betterly, Samuel 40 M Mason b.VT
Christianna 27 F NY
Fanny J. 7 F NY
William 5 M NY
Mary 1 F NY

I cannot find them in any later census. Perhaps Samuel was in the 1850 census, age 29 and living with a Robinson family, in Hardwick, Worcester, MA. Can't say with any certainty if that was him, but I know of no other Betterley that it could be. I do know that two sons of George and Dimmis from earlier census years that only listed head of household are unaccounted for later. Any chance Christianna and Hannah were interchanged? I know that Anna is technically short for Hannah. Do Fanny, William, and Mary ring any bells? Since I cannot find them at all later, I've certainly entertained the thought that they moved to Canada.

Some more Canadian clues

Some more clues. I assume you were writing of Kingston Penitentiary. Another researcher found in 2003 that Samuel Betterley was convicted at Elgin Co, Ontario of "receiving surgeon's report facts" and died 6 Dec 1882 of dysentery at age 70. Birthplace was listed as Canada.

Here are entries for Mapleton Cemetery in South Dorchester Twp, Elgin Co, Ontario:

In memory of George BETTERLEY 1867-1942
Annie TAYLOR his wife 1863-1944
George, son of George & Annie BETTERLEY died Dec. 13, 1909 aged 21 y’s 4 m’s & 22 d’s

George could certainly be from the Ohio family since he was born after the 1860 census. Then we have this marriage for St. Thomas, Elgin Co, Ontario that could be the infant Mary from that 1860 census:

Reg#002295, 1876, Melvin MATTHEWS, 23, Canada, Malahide, farmer,s/o William & Sarah MATTHEWS
married Mary BETTERLY, 19, Ohio, Yarmouth, d/o Samuel & Hannah BETTERLY
Wit: Sarah FERGUSON of Yarmouth & Sophia (can not read) of St. Thomas on 11 April 1876 at St. Thomas

Then an 1881 Canadian census entry for Yarmouth, Elgin East, Ontario from the LDS site. This indicates the same age as the 1860 Ohio census:

Samuel Betterley, head of household, born USA, age 60, farm labourer, married, English ethnicity

This would be one year before the death of Samuel Betterley at Kingston Penetentiary. The LDS site also indicated a Samuel Betterley born about 1818 Newfane, Windham, VT. Maybe it's the Samuel in question since the others in Newfane named Samuel Betterley were born 1792 and his infant son born/died 1828.

Lots of interesting clues, you will agree. I think I am on the right track, so is there anything more you can add?

Hi, can anyone help. I know that this board is for Betterleys but I thought someone might be able to help. Maybe some of these are the same people?
I'm looking for information on my great grandfather Thomas John Betteley who lived in Nantwich or Crewe, Cheshire between 1879 and 1944. I'm not sure if he was born here or not.
He married and Elizabeth Russell (born c.1880 in Nantwich) in 1906 in Nantwich and they had 4 children, Ernest, John, Elizabeth and Gwendoline.
I have a lot of Elizabeth's tree but none of Johns and I can't find any information about the couple on any census.
If anyone could help at all it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Danielle

Hello Betterly Board. I'm looking for any info on the wife of Alton Betterly, the 6th great grandson of Thomas Betterly & Elizabeth Alden. Alton was born 9/3/1869 in Genesee Cty, Michigan, son of Andrew & Nancy from Pennsylvania. Alton married a Ellen M or Ella M around 1890 in Michigan. I found one board the listed a Ellen Butler, but I can not substancate the info.
Hi Susan,
Glad to hear someone from UK replying to messages!

Let me introduce myself & others.
My name is Phylicia Salisbury cousin to Lori Drotos whom you replied to in rootsweb.
(I'm not sure if she'll get your email as she hasn't been "active" w/fellow researchers for a few years.)
Then there's the "guru" Mr. Lauren Dahling. I term him guru as he's the one who actually put the US Betterley website & rootsweb message
board together for his (now) ex-wife. He still attempts to keep up despite his busy schedule.
Then there's Larry McGrath & his mother Anne. Also Esther Mott. Who have all contributed to alot of research here in the states.
(among the many others!)

Unfortunately none of us have been able to determine where in England our Betterleys originated in England!
We have at present discovered 2.
A Fran Betterley showed up in Virginia in 1662/1670 as we've found a signature for a land deed. That's all we've ever been able to find on him.
Then there's Thomas Betterley (whom most of us here in the US come from). Thomas shows up in North Carolina in 1712. He's listed as being a haberdasher & or feltmaker & later on a Justice of the Peace. He married Elizabeth Alden (of the orginal Aldens who 1st settled America) in Boston in 1720. And she stayed there her entire life. They had 1 child (known & documented) named Thomas who stayed in Boston. Thus...that's the beginning of our American
Betterleys.

I've been on the UK web looking periodically for any clues. I've found a couple of things but nothing to determine if he/they're "ours".
If you like I can send you what I've found. Unfortunately it won't be much as of in this past October I had a complete computer crash and lost everything!

I'm sure you'll be hearing from the above people sooner or later if you haven't already.

So looking forward to working w/you! And thanks again for replying to the website.
Phylicia Salisbury in Oregon, USA
