Re: John Betz

I have only seen an "Annie Emrich" shown on any of hte family trees I've seen on Ancestry.com. I got the Spengler from the copy of the marriage certificate that I copied from the state archives last week. If you give me your direct email, I will be glad to scan the copy I have and email it to you.

I am not sure if your John Betz is my John Betz. The marriage certificate makes it doubtful. Have you gotten as far as John's parents? Was his mother indeed Lizzie "Brown"? It makes it so confusing because both their mothers' names are Lizzie. My John Betz was also born in 1866. Do you have a copy of your John Betz' death certificate. It, too, is on file at the State Archives but I won't get a chance to get back up there before I go. Does it mention his parents' names? If you have or, get a copy of it, can you scan and send me a copy? My email is kcbell@gmail.com.

I don't know too much about the family history. My family stories tell me that my Betz ancestors were originally farmers (dairy?) in the Metairie area. I have had another local Betz descendant tell me that they were also related to the funeral home Betz's but I have no positive info of that myself. Lisa Matherne is the Betz descendant I spoke to. She lives in the New Orleans area and seems very knowledgeable on her family. I was hoping to meet with her while I was here. However, while I am from Slidell, I now live in Utah and only get down here to visit.

Let's keep in touch. There may still be a connection. you should also try reaching Lisa Matherne. She is on this message board as Lisa Bassich. She has been researching the Betz's for many years now. I am only just starting. I am very new at this genealogy stuff.

John and Annie had three children :
Henry, Augusta and Rosie. Rosie married Charles Childress and they are my grandparents. I have all of the information on this branch.

Augusta married Phillip Schmitz. I have all of the information on this branch also.

John married Laura Vidal. I have all of the information on
this branch.

Regarding the census. At one point my grandmother went to live with her mother and father with her 5 children. My grandfather died in 1918 when my dad was 3 and my aunt was 1. They lived there for a few years then moved.

My dad, he is 94, has never mentioned Annie Emrich Spengler. Where did the Spengler name come in? I have always known her as Annie Emrich. I am going to do some reasearch at Jackson Church, founded in 1842. I think that the Betz family were members of this church.

As an aside, I am in New Orleans where are you located?

I have no copies of documents only what has been in the newspapers.

I do know that there are at least two unrelated Betz families in New Orleans. One was associated with Betz funeral home and my branch was not.

My John Betz died on 16 March 1927 and was 61 years old when he died. If this is so he was born in 1866. Annie died on 18 July 1930 and was 52 years old. If this is so she was born in 1878

Let's see what we both can find out

I have a copy of a marriage certificate for a marriage between John Betz and Annie (Emrich )Spengler. I have also copies of censuses for this family - some showing Childress relatives. The Childress' were the children of John and Annie's daughter (Rosie I think). I am trying to determine if this John Betz is the same as John Betz on my family tree.

On the marriage certificate, Annie Emrich Spengler's father is listed as Alexander Emrich. Her mother's name is Theresa (last name illegible but begins with "Ke". John's father is listed as John Betz and his mother is shown as Lizzie (Brown???). My John's mother is Lizzie (Elizabeth Phillipps) Betz. This marriage took place Jan 31, 1885 in New Orleans, LA. John is listed as 20 yrs old at the time. No age is given for Annie. A copy can be made at the State Archives bldg on Essen Lane in Baton Rouge. The witnesses appear to be Ludwig and Angolina Kahrmann if that is any help. There is a death certificate on file at the LA State Archives for John giving the death date you have. Do you have a copy of this? I do not. I am wondering if it gives the names of John's parents,

If Lydia and Charles married in 1912, then she wouldn't have known my grandfather. They did meet years later when my grandparents traveled with their four childen (my mom included) to Oregon for a visit. one of the three brothers must have been Fred Betz - but Uncle Fred was born in 1860 or 1861...he would have been much older than Charles.
Hi,

Charles Henry Betz is my great grandfather. The one child missing from here is my grandfather, Charles Frederick Betz, born in October 6, 1901 and died December 5, 1988. Lydia was not his mother. His mother died when he was about 3 years old and his father, perhaps at Lydia's request, put him in an orphanage where he stayed for 6-12 months before his Uncle Fred (Betz...Charles's brother) came and got him. He was raised by Uncle Fred. First in Kansas then they moved west to Colorado, where he met my grandmother.

Re: Betz, convicted of murder, 1850's CA

My relative, David Cooper, was a jailer in Sonora, and in his spare time, was a miner for gold (like everybody else there at the time). The Betz story is one of the more colorful recounted in David's journal. It seems this man, Betz, who unfortunately is never given any other name in the journal, was in David's jail temporarily until being transported to state prison. I will quote the journal:

One of the prisoners I had at that time was a man named Betz who had received a sentence of fifteen years in the state prison. He was a nasty fellow, and when I looked at him I saw murder in his eyes. Taking him for a serious desperado I kept a sharp lookout for him. And I knew he was working some schemes with the jail cook. The cook was in for a petty case. I would send him downtown to get things for me, such as meat, flour, potatoes and beans. Of course I kept a pretty close eye on him, as well.

The cooking was done inside the jail and I had a hatchet to split kindling wood. All the knives and forks and dishes were kept in the jail. I also had a long table and benches in there. I would go in almost every day to play cards with them and joke with them to kill time, so they wouldn’t get too gloomy or fret about their situation in jail. I noticed that Betz would eye me once in a while with a very sharp gaze. So I thought I would lay for him, as I was satisfied he meant mischief.

My rule was to pull all prisoners who were in irons into their cells at 6:00 p.m. And then in the morning each one had to take his blankets out into the yard to sun for a while. It was a problem to keep clear of body lice and keep the jail clean.

My usual custom was to lock up and go downtown. But after thinking about Betz I noticing the regularity of my pattern, and began to change it. So then when I locked up and started downtown I would go just a little ways and then go back on the sly, and listen to hear if there was anything unusual going on in the jail. I never allowed them to talk after going to bed, so it should have been quiet.

When I got my ear up close to the wall I discovered the sound of sawing going on. That didn’t cause me much concern for I knew the jail was on flat bedrock.

Now Mr. Dawson [This man, also a prisoner, was soon to be released as his charges were not valid for a conviction] had his bed along the side of his cell on the outside wall. And he kept his ears open to hear what was going on.

But he said nothing to me until he found out their whole plan. One day he came into my office and when I gave him a stool, he sat down and said, “I have something to tell you. I have learned all I need to know. Keep your eyes open and be careful, as they are planning to kill you day after tomorrow with that hatchet by the stove. They don’t suspect me at all,” Dawson said. “They don’t know that I have heard the whole plot.”

I passed him through to the jail cells again and in an hour or two I went back to see whether they all had taken their blankets out. I came to Betz’ cell and there were his blankets lying on the floor. When I asked him why his blankets weren’t out in the air he had nothing to say. I told him to go right in and get them and take them outside. He chewed the rag a little and finally went and got them.

I opened the door and followed Betz outside to the yard. He hung them up and then went back inside. I followed him back to his cell to examine it. What I found, where his blankets had been on the floor, was a plank in the floor almost completely sawed through.

I called him over to confront him with what I had found. I asked him what he was doing that for. At that point it seemed awfully strange to him just how the planks had gotten sawed. Then I told him that I had been listening to him sawing from when he first started it. But I didn’t really care too much about it since I knew the jail was built on flat rock and it wouldn’t do him any good to cut a hole there.

Then I told him to take a seat on one of the benches. I walked up to him and lifted his shackled feet to find he had the rivets almost sawed off. He had the sawed creases filled with something like black putty to hide them from sight, or so he thought. I didn’t say a word.

I had been examining their irons every morning and had not seen the saw marks at all until just then. But instead of tipping my hand at that point, I simply locked the door and went out to tell my smith to come by in the morning.

The smith came by early the next day with his hammers and enough rivets for not one but two pair of shackles. After all, my cook had a hand in this, too. I found out that Betz had promised him fifteen hundred dollars to help him escape. The plan was for the cook to distract me so Betz could brain me with the hatchet.

I left the smith in my office and went into the jail, telling the cook to get up on top of the cells and get me the largest shackles that were up there. He hunted around for a while but finally found them and handed them down to me. Then I called in the smith.

I told Betz to take a seat and then told the smith to push the heads off the old rivets. That surprised old Betz as he thought I hadn’t seen the condition they were in.

After the smith had removed and replaced the rivets in Betz’ irons, I told the cook to bring over those extra large shackles. I had him take a seat. And then if lightning had struck him he couldn’t have been more surprised than he was when I told him I knew he had been helping Betz.

I had the smith put those big shackles on him, and as they were going on, he cried and carried on, begging me not to put them on him. But on they went. It was 45 pounds of chain. The cook had only a week or two more of jail time but he wore those heavy chains the whole time. And the next week Betz was taken to the state prison.

Their plan had been to use my usual pattern, which was to unlock the door, then go unlock the cells and go out again. The cook was to call to me at that point so Betz could get me from behind. The cook, himself, told me all about it after Betz was gone. He said Betz had taken two case knives and just cut them into each other. That made saws of them and it didn’t take him long to saw the heads off the rivets.

That's all the journal has on Mr. Betz, but it contains two other such stories about the jail and much more on other subjects. I am quite excited about the prospect of its pending publication. If there is any connection with this particular Betz I would appreciate whatever you could add to the story prior to publication of the entire manuscript, probably in 2010.
Betz, convicted of murder, 1850's CA

Looking for information on the surname, Betz, but this spelling may be off the mark. I have information on a man who had a rather dark history, being convicted of murder, and plotting yet another one while in jail. This is certainly not the kind of information most people want to learn more about, particularly in their own family, but if there is anyone who would like to make this connection, I have some information. This Betz was convicted of murder in gold rush California, c. 1851, and was jailed briefly at Sonora. My g-g-grandfather, David Cooper, was the jailer and his journal is about to be published. I have some interesting anecdotal information, and I would like to find out more about this man if he can be identified and anything more is known.

Looking for information on Ethenile's family. He married Sarah Ebeline in Gallipolis, Ohio. He had 3 children - Albertus Betz (married Ollive Curry), George R. Betz (married Louisa Dale), Asbury Betz (married Lizzie Alexander). I can find them in the 1960, 1970, and 1980 census in Gallipolis, Ohio. After that they seem to have disappeared. I did find Ethenile in the 1900 Census but he lived alone with a servent. He is not buried in Gallia County so he to seems to have vanished after 1900. Does anyone know about this family?

It is interesting to see a thread online for Frank Betz. I have had a small oak chemical cabinet for many years that was made by this company. It has the original label on top, is about 14" wide, by 12" tall and about 9-10" deep. It has two swings doors that open in front, with a drawer in the bottom. There are partitions that open up with holes and slots for beakers, test tubes, and other glass items to sit in. There are also orignal chemical bottles with glass stoppers in their tops, some with the original paper lables on them. I also have the original sale bill when it was purchased. It is a beautiful and all original oak cabinet and still ine fairly good condition inside with the exception of where one of the glass bottles must have broken and a chemical released and darkened the wood inside. I have always wanted to find an old catalog in hopes of finding this item in one. I am not sure if this was a portable type cabinet or one used in a lab, since it is so small. Anyway, I just wanted to pass this info on to whomever might be interested.
Ken

Hello Betz searcher.

Yes there are a lot of spellings. In my family it started with the Hesse Baetz, then Betz, some Betts and finally some changed to Bates. So welcome to the fun family "find your spelling" search

I come from a Hessian soldier from the Rev War. He ended up in Virginia with the land granted to Hessians that "turned coat".

DJ

The Pickaway County seat is Circleville, Ohio which is about half an hour from the capital, Columbus, where I live. The Ross County seat is Chillicothe, Ohio, and it is about a half hour south of Circleville on State Route 23. I have ancestors in both counties plus Coshocton County, Hancock County, Holmes County, Licking County,Marion County, Summit County and Union County. Maybe more as I research further!

I have a copy of a death certificate for George Ludwig BETZ who was born Sept. 5, 1858 and died in June 27, 1916 in Marion, Ohio. His parents were Daniel BETZ, born in Pennsylvania, and Sarah ROOT, also born in Pennsylvania. His sister, Rachel, was my great grandmother. This George was a blacksmith and is buried in Circleville, Ohio; but I don't know where. The death certificate was signed by Clifton C. BETZ who lived in Columbus, Ohio. This probably not the same George BETZ; but I thought I might toss this into the discussion.

Frank S. Betz was my great grandmother's brother. He began the first pharmaceutical company. So the box you found was of early medical equipment. You could purchase a medical office equipment for $99.00.

Hi I'm looking for any information i can working backward from my father Daniel Betz who died in 1997. His Father was Glen Betz who died in 1946 at around 30 to 39 years old and married Bernice Gallagher, and His father (my geat grandfather)was John Betz who died in 1946 at around 30 to 39 years old. All were from the johnstown or Wimore pa area from what I know. If anyone can contact me with anything I can start with it would be helpfull. Unfortunatly most ancestry site require a membership and I can't spend the money on what might be the right info only to find it is not anywhere close.

Johanna,

BETZ is a relatively common name in Germany.
I've seen it in various places throughout-- both in the Rheinpfalz area as well as Schwarzwald. My own BETZ ancestors come from a region just west of Frankfurt.

In fact, the sister of my great-great-grandmother was named Johanna Betz.

-- Jillaine Smith
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jillaine

Nicholas Betz was my great-great grandfather. One of his sons was John N Betz who was born around 1848. My grandmother was John N & wife Rosa Betz's daughter. Her name was Ida (born 1889) and she was one of their 9 (gulp!) children who all lived on Rosa Ave in Metairie, LA. Ida married Eddie Michelet and had only one son...my father Howard Michelet who was born in 1917.

If you're interested, I know quite a bit about John N's 9 children.
