Ada Irene Bevis / Helen Bevis / Ada Bredeson, WA USA

I am looking for information about my father's mother. On his birth certificate her maiden name is indicated as Ada Irene (or Irine) Bevis, born in White Star, WA, USA. She was 20 at the time putting her birth year around 1922 or 1923. I can not find anyone by this name in the 1930 US Census; closest I came was a Helen Bevis, born in 1923, in Hoquiam, WA, USA (same county as White Star). Nor can I find any info on her married name at the time which was Ada Bredeson (as indicated on the birth certificate).

Any help is appreciated! My thought is that she had a name change? Thank you.

While pursuing an interest of ours called geocaching, we happened upon Colerain Historical Cemetery - Dunlop Station and noticed a few gravestones of Revolutionary War veterans. We also post rev war veterans graves to a site called waymarking.com. We snapped a picture of the gravestone of Issacher Bevis and upon researching any history about him, we discovered your thread requesting information. I'll post a picture of the gravestone if I can. If you need any specific information on the location of the cemetery, I can pinpoint it exactly using GPS coordinates if you like - N 39.17.646 W 084.39.378. It's in a little town just northwest of Cincinnati, OH.

Re: Bevis/Gee of Hampshire/Dorset, UK

Hi! You may well have sorted this out by now but Elizabeth Lily was, as far as I can tell, born in Sheerness, Kent while her father William served as a Coastguard, along with Arthur and Ethel Blanch. Baby Alice was born in Itchingfield, W Sussex after William retired and became a gamekeeper - he died shortly afterwards leaving his widow Emma Jane with 9 kids aged 9 months to 18yrs. Walter, the eldest, was born in Gosport, Hants, presumably while training for the Coastguard following his transfer from the Navy. Emily, William, Thomas and Charles (my GGF) were all born in Essex where father William was based and where he met Emma Jane Warner b 1842, Tollesbury, Essex, d of Isaac Warner b c 1811 and Sarah, possibly nee Wood, b 1817 in Tollesbury. Isaac was a farm bailiff. William senior was born 23 April 1835 in Warsash to Thomas b 1805 and Isabella b 1811. Thomas, William, Isabella and Elizabeth were all family names so it's very complicated unravelling them all. Thomas 1811 is probably the son of William b1776 and Rose Dalton 1771, all of Titchfield (which probably really means Warsash). My father grew up in Portsmouth and visited Warsash frequently in the 30s and 40s. He remembers virtually everyone being a cousin of some sort!

William joined up 19 Dec 1854 on HMS Neptune, saw service in the Baltic during the Crimean War (blockading), was on HMS Shannon in 1854 and landed in Calcutta as part of Peel's Naval Brigade, hauling ships guns up to Cawnpore and Lucknow and was decorated twice for his part in the relief of Lucknow, achieved fairly rapid promotion thereafter, seeing service in the Med before transferring to the Coastguard and moving to the Thames Estuary. He clearly kept in touch with his family in Warsash as his older brother Thomas claims to have been with him in W Sussex when he died and brought Emma and all the kids except Walter and William (who both joined the Navy around this time) back to Warsash where they moved in next door to his sister Fanny who had also been recently widowed (her husband Charles Gale had worked at the chemical works just down the coast and had been an invalid for some time - draw your own conclusions!). Emma Jane had to resort to becoming a laundress and taking in lodgers (including William Gee) to make ends meet. Son Thomas crewed on a yacht, Charles was taken in as an orphan at the Greenwich Hospital School, joined the Navy as a boy writer and retired as a Lt Cdr. Both his sons also joined the Navy as Shipwrights. My son looks like being Generation 6 in the Service! There is a vague story in the family that young Ethel Gee got mixed up in some espionage case in Gosport which, given the strong Service tradition in the family, is not really talked about as embarassing. Do you know any more about this?

Hope this helps. I can provide more details if it helps. J

Hi Shoveys,

I have complied this very unknown part of the Bevis branches by some snippets in this thread in the forums called "Cecil Bevis," and with the tiny little bit from this entry on the world family tree (free registration required):

http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:64270...

This is how I know of Berthas birthdate and the marriage date. Obviously the person who did the "Reed Tree" was off by two years.

Hope this helps!
Chris spatch3(at)yahoo(dot)com

Could you tell me how sure you are of:
Generation No. 3

4. CECIL PERRY9 Bevis (CHARLES DENMAN8, Levi WILLIAM7, ELI (ELY)6, DENMAN (DENMON)5, THOMAS4, JAMES3, JOHN (BEVIX)2, BEVIS1)10,11 was born May 12, 1905 in Ray/Raymond KS11. He married BERTHA GLYDAS REED12 May 12, 192412. She was born October 22, 1907 in Humphrey AR12.

Children of CECIL Bevis and BERTHA REED are:
i. PERRY10 BEVIS13.
ii. TOMMY BEVIS13.

I have a marriage license for Cecil Perry Bevis and Bertha Reed dated July 12, 1926.

So, I'm wondering if you have some sort of evidence that this Cecil Bevis was married to Bertha G. Reed and of her birth date.

Lisa,

If Nora was born after the 1880 census, then she wouldn't have been on the report I just looked at. Since I know of no other freely available online census other than the 1880 through the LDS website, I'm kind of at a standstill for any other research for this side of the family.

Thanks!
Chris Katscher
