I have traced family to Ireland. William Bewley (born circa 1825) and his wife Ann (Cosgrove) Bewley. I am certain they were married in Ireland, just have no idea where in Ireland. They had at least two children born in Ireland; William (Abt. 1857) and James (b. Abt 1862). The family moves to Cleator, Cumberland County, England and a daughter Jane is born in 1864. Erik - esbewley@juno.com
PARENTS OF GEORGE T. BEWLEY

I have been searching my Bewley line for many many years. I want to find the parents of my GG Grandfather George Thompson Bewley. He was born 1853 in Reading, Berks County, PA. The first time that I find George is in the 1860 census living with Samuel D. Blackman and his wife Henretta (Piper) Blackman. In 1868 Henretta died. Some time between 1868 and 1870 Samuel married Margaretta (Piper) Blackman, George is still living with Samuel. They are all buried in Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading in the Samuel Blackman plot. There are additional people buried in Samuel's plot: Almira Piper, Rebecca Piper, John Piper buried in 1848. Abner Bewley 1856, Samuel Blackman (father of Samuel) 1857, Olive Blackman 1860, Clara Thompson 1861, Maria Piper 1865 (I believe the mother of Henretta, Margaretta, and Mary (Piper) Bewley), Walter Blackman 1871, William Piper, dentist, 1875, Evelyn Bewley, George T. Bewley, Margaretta Blackman 1889, Samuel D. Blackman1889, Lydia Bewley 1900 and Herbert Blackman 1912.
Another Bewley family Abner Bewley and Mary (Piper) Bewley had 3 children, Evelyn, William and John B. Mary (Piper) Bewley kept house for Samuel Blackman after his wives died. I feel that there is a relationship to my George.
I do have the obit for Samuel D. Blackman which is how I found out that he married 2 sisters and that Mary Bewley was his sister-in-law.
My question is Henretta the mother of George? Was she married to a Bewley and who was he?
I need help with this puzzle. Help and suggeestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Shirley
Searching for information for a Mary Bewley b. abt. 1839 d. 1916. I understand this woman is buried in a Berry Cemetery on U.S. 87, Tracy, Kentucky.

I am particularly interested to learn if this Mary Bewley was part Native American.

She was the second wife of Ephraim Berry. Please do not confuse this Mary Bewley with Ephraim Berry's first wife, Mary Jane Bewley, who died in 1854.

Names of their children who lived to adulthood: Francis Milton 'Doc' Berry, Katherine Ann 'Kitty' Berry, Frances R.
Amy, sorry but I have over 15,000 Bewleys and their descendants in my database, but no Barbara Ann Bewley whose mother was a Border. I have several Barbaras but none in Knoxville, TN. For your info, there was another Bewley branch in Barren County, KY, who were from the Ohio, Pennsylvania or New York Bewleys. I will keep looking for you. John

Re: My German Bewley Line

My line of Bewley's has been in Pennsylvania since at least 1800. I suspect they were Quaker, but I could be wrong. Nearly all Bewley families I've come across originated in the British Isles, but my family has always said that ours was from Alsace-Lorraine, which was in France or Germany depending on the time period. I think they may have been from England originally and migrated to Germany for religious reasons. Yours is the only other Bewley family I know of that came from Germany. Do you know anything else about the origin of your family in Germany or if they connect to Jesse Bewley, born 1813 in Philadelphia? Thanks.
John Buley

I, too, am very interested in Marena Bewley. I believe her to be my gggrandfather's sister. His name is Calvin Harrell b. 1819 in VA, married Luthena Ashley in Smyth Co. VA in 1842 and moved (back to) Hawkins, now Hamblen Co., TN. Marena's husband and children are buried in Russellville
Community Cemetery with my gggrandmother, Luthena. I was told Marena was a Harrell before marriage and was born in 1820. Marena had a brother named Emerson and named a son Emerson Calvin Bewley. I was also told that her parents may be Michael Harrell (which I've found nothing on) and Lucy Grigsby.
Her father's will is on the Hawkins Co. TN site. I'd love to hear more if anyone knows anything, since I've just recently became aware of a Bewley connection to the Harrells.

Hello Joanne,

I was wondering if you found any information on Francis Bewley? Our family have no contact with my fathers family "Wayne Bewley", we tried to do a family tree about a year ago but had trouble finding everyone so we kind of gave up.

Francis Bewley was my fathers great grand father, im pretty sure, his grand mother was Flaurence Bewley, better known as Nana Bewley, all lived in williamstown, please email me on nbewls@bigpond.com.au if you have any information.

The main reason we stopped doing our family tree is that no one knew what ever happened to Francis Bewley, so we could not work back any more.

Please contact me.

Kayte Bewley.

Hi Wayne,

Thanks so much for your Bewley information!

I visited Austin once back in the early 1980's to meet relatives Mona (JOHNSON) BORDERS and her son, Philip BORDERS. Mona and Philip are both now deceased and are buried with husband/father Earl BORDERS in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Mona was the second child of Marion Frank JOHNSON and Donnie (BERRY) JOHNSON.

Donnie was a daughter of Ephraim BERRY and Mary (BEWLEY) BERRY. I am a g-grandchild (60 years young!) of Frank and Donnie (BERRY) JOHNSON through their eldest child, Ray JOHNSON (deceased) through his second child-my mother (living).

The date of birth you show for Ephraim BERRY, son of Ephraim BERRY and Rhoda CLAYTON, is the date of birth for another man by the name of Ephraim BERRY. Both men were living in Barren County at the same time.

The other Ephraim BERRY is buried in Austin (aka Mt. Olivet Baptist Church) Cemetery, Austin, Barren Co., KY and his headstone shows the birth date of June 10, 1826. This cemetery is available for viewing online.

Ephraim BERRY and Mary (BEWLEY) BERRY are buried in the cemetery mentioned in my previous posting. The date of birth on his headstone shows January 28, 1823.

Last year a local researcher kindly e-mailed me a photo of the headstones of Ephraim and Mary BERRY.

A BERRY descendent kindly sent me copies (made on a copier) of two early BERRY family gatherings. Mary (BEWLEY) BERRY appears in both photos. I also have a copy of a newspaper article about Ephraim BERRY'S church involvement.

Happy Holidays!

Mary
Florida

Re: Cornelius Bewley

Also looking for information on Cornelius Bewley, b. 1770, m. Urnst. However, the Cornelius Bewley shown in 1830, W. Bradford, Chester, PA and 1850, E. Caln, Chester PA, can't be the one b. abt 1770--this might be, however, his son. Cornelius shown in Chester, PA, was b. abt 1804--the birthdate is consistent in both census.

Has anyone made headway on either of these Cornelius Bewleys?

'Bewley Roots In Barren Co., Ky.' by Eva Franklin

In and before 1971, I worked on "Bewley Roots in Barren Co., Ky." with Eva Franklin. I have recently retyped the book, as Eva had it, and added much Barren Co., information. I would like to add your lines, pictures, and any more research to update it. If you have any Bewley information that is not in her book, I'd love to have it, and will give you credit. I have not seen the "Bewley Roots" newsletter done by Shelby Jackson Bewley, but I was the source of the above book that he copied and sold. Please get in touch with me ASAP as I want to get this done before spring. Martha Harrison martyp@scrtc.com
