My great great grandfather was William Bews born in 1826 in Kirkwall, Orkney, Scotland and who died in 1896 in Newcastle Upon Tyne. His father was a James Bews who died some time before 1856. It seems that Bews was quite a common name in Orkney in the early part of the nineteenth century and various families moved to Liverpool, Newcastle and other ports as most of them were in the seafaring field. My gt gt grandfather also had a son called Charles which was not a common name at the time so perhaps there was some link.
There was a William Bews who married in Newcastle in 1847 so he may be worth checking out.
Good luck.
