My gggg grandmother was Ann Bews, twin of Mary Bews born 9th June 1776 in Liverpool. She married Thomas Taylor. Her Father was James Bews and I guess he was one of the sailors someone mentioned from the Orkneys as there seem to be next to no other Bews in the area before him. I'm interested in anyone else who knows of Bews in the Liverpool area around this time, as I'm sure we are related.

My great, great grandfather was James Bews (born 1823 in Kirkwall) married to Mary Yorston. (some of his children moved to Canada, he died in the Orkneys, then the rest of his children and his wife moved to Canada.) His siblings included Ann (born 1821), William (I thought born 1825, married to Jane and they moved to England), Isabella (1827, married to George Pottinger, moved to Canada), Jane (1829 married to George Drever, moved to England) and Charles (1833 married to Margaret Sabiston, no children)

I believe your great, great grandfather and mine might have been brothers.

Melissa (Bews) Cannon, DeSoto, Texas (near Dallas)

Looking for information on Thomas (?) BEWS or BUSE, who married Mary BUCHANAN before 1836. Mary was from the Old 96 / Abbeville District of South Carolina. Not sure about her husband's given name. They were probably born between 1785 and 1800. What happened to them??

That would be my best guess based on age and taking place in Shapinsay. As with the marriage records, until you order the records, there is no way to know for sure and even that may not help in every case.

Margaret DRUMMOND	F	C:	1761-01-18	James DRUMMOND	Margt.

My great great grandfather was William Bews born in 1826 in Kirkwall, Orkney, Scotland and who died in 1896 in Newcastle Upon Tyne. His father was a James Bews who died some time before 1856. It seems that Bews was quite a common name in Orkney in the early part of the nineteenth century and various families moved to Liverpool, Newcastle and other ports as most of them were in the seafaring field. My gt gt grandfather also had a son called Charles which was not a common name at the time so perhaps there was some link.

There was a William Bews who married in Newcastle in 1847 so he may be worth checking out.

Good luck.

hello

JWB was my grand uncle.I am Peter Bews (09.09.1927) son of Peter Bews and Christina Smith Keldie. Peter Bews (13. 07.1891) was the only son of Elizabeth Bews. Elizabeth Bews (known as Kickie) was the sister of John William and reverend James Bews. JW was born at Berryhill, Scapa, Orkney. He was a founder member and first principal of Natal University in Petermaritzberg, South Africa. At the university there is a wing named after him and quite a bit of information. Have you checked their website? He died 10th Nov 1938. At the time of his death he owned Berryhill farm and also, along with his brother - a farm and wheat station in Sascateswan, Canada. He wrote several book including The Grass and Grasslands of South Africa and Life as a Whole.

Berryhill was passed down to my father but unfortunately, he had to sell it out of the family when he and my mother divorced. I am one of nine from Peter's first marriage, three of them survive to date.

Just drop me a line if you want to know more. I notice that your posting is quite old, so you may have finished this part of your research by now.

Peter.
