My grandmother, Martha Bezdicek, was born in North Dakota on October 2, 1924. She married my grandfather Clarence "Bud" W. Roswall and gave birth to my mother in Alaska on September 26, 1948. My grandmother also had a sister named Sylvia Bezdicek, who later became Sylvia Hudson. She was born in North Dakota on September 6, 1923.

Please email if you have any information about my grandmother or her sister. suga95@hotmail.com

Regards,

Sheri

Re: Bezdecheck

Hi, I'm Leta's dang brother. Bert is right about the spelling, although Pezdicek shows how names can evolve. A Czech acquaintance told me that in Prague the name Bezdicek is as common as Smith here in the US. It means Bez of Czech.

In the sixties our family attended a Bezdecheck reunion, held in LA. As I remember, almost all attendees were women who had adopted their spouse's usually anglo name.

I think our turn of the century ancestor was illiterate and the spelling Bezdecheck is a phonetic derivation copied down by an Ellis Island clerk. It stuck. We are Bezdiceks all the same.

I Hope this helps.

Hello! If you're a Bezdecheck (and not afraid to admit it) AND you're not one of my dang siblings then I'd love to hear from you. The spelling of our mutual last name seems to be a rather unusual and modern translation. I'm very interested in assertaining the earlier spelling so I can search farther back. Thanks, Leta B.
