My sketch on Daniel & Hannah (Bibber) Townsend published in Maine Families Vol 5 is incorret, for Daniel had only one wife. Descendants from Daniel's son Dodivah & Sarah (Hastings) joined the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution on Robert Townsend of New York and others who were not their descendants. Thus, the NSDAR has deleted those lineages. Only descenants from their son Daniel Townsend who was killed in the Revoltion are accepted now for membership.

I have since done more research on Daniel & Hannah (Bibber) Townsend who filed marriage intentions in North Yarmouth, Maine in 1752.(1) Daniel's wife Hannah Bibber's is not cited in the Bibber genealogy and I didn't find a birth record for her. (2) The National Daughters of American Revolution has since rejected their desecendants who joined, exect for Daniel Jr. whose pension can be found on Heritage Quest. Thus I have since corrected my Daniel Townsend genealogy: (1) Daniel Sr. had only one wife--Hannah Bibber. A Townsend-Hastings descendent joined the DAR on the Daniel b. 1740 in Portsmouth, NH, which the DAR has since rejected. Likewise, their son Robert in never served in the Revolution; the Robert that did so was born in New York. Also, I have found no vital records that connect this Townsend family with those in Lynn, Mass. or in New York.

Hannah Bibber married Daniel Townsend, Sr. NOT Johnson. They filed marriage intentions in North Yarmouth, Mains one 4 November 1752. See my sketch on Daniel Townsend in Maine Families in 1790 Vol. 4 [Picton, Press, 1996] pp. 306-308. Hannah was his 2nd wife. He and Hannah were in Harpswell by 1761 when he bought land there. They later moved to Vassalborough,Maine, that part which is now Sidney.Hannah was living in 1803 but Daniel was not. Daniel had one child by his first wife and 7 children by Hannah Bibbe.

Joel Chandler Bibber from Harpswell, Maine is my gr-gr-gr-grand-father. Would anybody know both of his parents' names and be able to prove this? how about his siblings? Are all siblings from the same mother?

I would appreciate it. His wife was Hannah Bates Johnson.
Their daughter, Sarah Abia Lapham Bibber was my gr-gr-grand-mother.

Randolph Doyle Bibber, MD was born 1 Sep 1845 in Brunswick, Maine. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1871 and married Sarah Aborn Thornton 6 Feb 1863. At one point he was the mayor of Bath. Randolph and Sarah had a son Harold T. Bibber, born 15 Dec 1877. I do not have any information on other children.

Randolph's parents were John Doyle Bibber, son of John Bibber and Jenny Doyle; and Mehetable Cowan Hall, daughter of Martin Hall.

James Bibber's family

This is a list of James and Abigail (Drew) Bibber's children and their spouses.
i.Lemuel Bibber b. abt. 1750 settled on Haskell's Island, Harpswell, Maine and died there.
He married on Nov. 4, 1773 Ruth Bailey (of the 6th generation of Jacob Bailey & Ruth Jones).
ii.James Bibber, Jr. b. abt. 1757 and died on Bustin's Island, Harpswell, Maine around 1842, married April 18, 1777 Joanna Bailey (who was a sister to the above mentioned Ruth).
iii.Abigail "Nabby" Bibber b. 1727 married Jacob Johnson
iv. Rebecca Bibber b. abt. 1738 m. Dec. 7, 1758 William Babbidge
v. Susanna Bibber b. abt. 1740 m. May 5, 1768 Ezra Curtis
vi. Anna Bibber b. Harpswell Jan 25, 1754 d. July 30, 1830, married 1st Nov. 12, 1772 Joseph Woodworth who was b. 1746.
married 2nd July 18, 1778 Daniel Webber b. York, Maine Dec. 27, 1736 and he died Oct. 27, 1825.
vii. Elizabeth Bibber b. abt. 1758 m. Feb. 3, 1777 Jacob Curtis
viii. Sarah Bibber b. abt. 1735 died Feb. 16, 1767. She m. Dec. 2, 1755 Courtney Babbidge. Sarah died when she fell through the ice and drowned while crossing from an Orr's Island store to Harpswell Neck. I believe her son William was also with her and drowned as well.
Hannah Bibber b. abt. 1732 m. Dec. 3, 1751 Daniel Johnson.
Please note, these dates are all approximates, and Sinnett's genealogy's are a terrific source of reference, but are in no way solemn truth. These all need to be varified by the researcher. Those of us working on this line have done our very best to find the proper dates and names of these Bibber ancestors.
There is great speculation about the dates of birth as weighed against the dates of marriage for these children.
Daughter Anna who has an exact birthdate listed was the only reference point we had to go on.
Good Luck to all researching this name and any information or suggestions or corrections you may have please Post them here.

Born: 1838, Portland, Maine. Accredited to: Maine. G.O. No.: 45, 31 December 1864. Citation: Bibber served on board the U.S.S. Agawam, as one of a volunteer crew of a powder boat which was exploded near Fort Fisher 23 December 1864. The powder boat, towed in by the Wilderness to prevent detection by the enemy, cast off and slowly steamed to within 300 yards of the beach. After fuses and fires had been lit and a second anchor with short scope let go to assure the boat's tailing inshore, the crew again boarded the Wilderness and proceeded a distance of 12 miles from shore. Less than 2 hours later the explosion took place, and the following day fires were observed still burning at the forts.
John had several children with Rebecca while still married to Sarah Field. If you would like more information, I'd be happy to share what I can. Just email me with your request.
Hi Randy,

Several of us involved in researching James Bibber have posted lots of information on another site. Melissa decided by posting here we may all learn some new information and attrack more researchers. It may save you some time to review postings at the other site which will reveal what we've all discovered so far.

http://genforum.genealogy.com/bibber/

I know we'd all be interested in any information you may have to share.

Paula Bibber
Ray O. (Dion/Van) Bibber

Hi there I am trying to find information about my grandfather's uncle. Ray O. bibber was born 6 Oct., 1885 to George Herbert Bibber (b1844) and Hattie McFarland in Eastport, ME. The rest of the Bibber line is as follows: George Herbert b1844 - Charles H. b1811 - Thomas Bibber b1786 - James Bibber b1756 - James Bibber b1706.

I know that Ray O. was a laborer at the Union Warf in Eastport in 1901 and lived at 1 Hayes Ave., Eastport. He graduated from Boynton High School in 1905 and spent some time at the University of Maine in Orono. He was a clerk in New York in 1908 and later married a woman named Youree Ruth. Some time prior to 1920 he and his brother Noel Osborne (my great greatgrandfather) took the name Van Bibber. Ray was not seen by his brother for something like fourty years. They finally found him in Salado TX running a inn called the Stage coach Inn. He died in Texas in May 1985. He also went by the names Dion and Van. There is such a mystery surrounding this gentleman. My family would greatly appreciate any information.

Thank you, Randy Van Bibber Terra.

Alice Alden Bibber

Hi there. I am looking for information about Alice Alden Bibber. She was the daughter of Captain Andrew H. Bibber and annie Louise Ansley. I know that she lived in and around Orange Calif. She graduated from the Girls Collegiate School of Los Angeles in 1903. She later married Ray O. Van Bibber (formerly Ray O. Bibber) of Eastport Maine. They were first cousins. Their marriage did not last. Ray did not reappear until the 1940's in Salado Texas.

I would like to find out some more specifics about Alice Alden Bibber/Van Bibber. When did they divorce if they actually did? Did she ever remarry? Did she ever have any children? Where abouts did she live?

Thanks, Randy.
Bibber vs. Vibert

Hi Randy,
I think my cousin Joyce may have given me your name at one time as she told me you had done extensive research on the Bibber / Vibert names. As Paula wrote in her response to yours, we are Up for anything at this point, and have done much research ourselves looking for the truth about James. I guess anything is possible concerning the name Bibber, but what puzzles me personally is why there are records of the name Bibber (spelled like that) in England in the 1500's and then our James came from the English Channel Islands and there are No Bibber's found there, only Viberts, but none that Seems to make a connection our immigrant. It's just mind boggling and confusing.
Then the Bibber name in Wenham, MA in the 1600's also throws me for a loop. I guess like all family names, there were several branches of the names, but I sure would like to find a link between Bibber and Vibert somehow. That would sure make this whole picture a lot clearer.
Perhaps you can shed some new light on this situation.
Thanks for writing here, we need all the Bibber/Vibert support we can get.

Robert "Bob" Bibber

This info was sent to me by a dear cousin.
Robert "Bob" Bibber was crippled in both legs. He walked with canes that had handles like those of hand-saws and about hip-high. During the winter when there was snow and ice on the ground, he put brads on the ends of his canes and kneeled down onto a sled and propelled himself along at a pretty fair speed.
He had the phonograph in town and would pick up a little money for playing it at the local store in Harpswell, Maine.
He was the best oldtime drummer on the snare that anyone had heard. His single and double drags were something to hear and behold, yet he could not read a single note of music. He played several other insturments as well. He was the leader and sole owner of the "Bobbie's Band" and played a piccolo in that group. The rest of the band consisted of Frank Linwood Bailey, Frank Noble and George Pinkham.

Bibber's mentioned in Cooke line

Just thought I would share this with everyone. Yesterday while reading through the Francis Cooke of the Mayflower by Ralph Wood, Jr. book index, I found the name Bibber mentioned along with the Johnson family name, (Hannah and Abigail Bibber's husbands). It did say however that lineage to the Cooke line could not be established because they had never found any documentation to prove that particular line of Johnson's to the Cooke family of the Mayflower.
I still thought that it was most interesting and worthwhile posting here.
