PLEASE NOTE, THIS WAS POSTED FOR REFERENCE ONLY. I AM NOT RELATED TO, NOR AM I RESEARCHING THIS FAMILY, I’VE ONLY DONE A COPY AND PASTE FROM OUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER FYI.

THIS INFO HAS BEEN POSTED WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE EDITOR OF THE COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD.

Lawrence K. Bichler
Posted: Wednesday, Aug 08, 2007 - 04:56:42 pm PDT
COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD, MOSES LAKE, WASHINGTON STATE

Lawrence K. Bichler was born in Saskatchewan, Canada in 1917 to a recently emigrated mother and father. The family operated a small family farm in Canada before moving to North Dakota for greener pastures and the promise of a bright future.

Once settled not far from Rugby, N.D., my father soon found himself part of a family of two boys and six girls. It took all eight children and two adults to operate the barely break-even operation. In those days most farm work was not mechanized, it was all done by band. It was backbreaking work that allowed you to sleep soundly at night.

Dad was a young man when the family heard about something called, "The Great Depression" and the collapse of the stock market. Being part of a financial depression was nothing new to the Bichler family. However, the family lived comfortably, fighting for their piece of the American dream.

One of the many Roosevelt era programs designed to give a helping hand was the Civilian Conservation Corp, the C-C's. My father was one of the first to sign up for the C-C's and sent most of his monthly wage home so his family could have a better life. During his time in the C-C's Dad heard about the Navy, enlisted and secretly hoped to be stationed aboard an aircraft carrier. Aircraft carriers were something new, and there was one special carrier my father hoped to see one day: the CV-6, USS Enterprise. When Dad was nearing completion of his basic training, he learned his dream had come true. He was to be assigned to The Big E!

After a very long train ride to San Diego, Dad boarded the ship and soon settled into the life of a young sailor living his dream. He was an aviation machinist's mate aboard an aircraft carrier, but not just any carrier, it was the Big E. While he was living his dream, there were rumors of what would soon become World War II. Germany was flexing its military muscle in Europe and Japan was equally active in the Pacific. In early December 1941 my father and the Enterprise were cruising the Pacific Ocean with eyes wide open watching the horizon for anything out of the ordinary. Just out of view, the Japanese were preparing a massive attack against Pearl Harbor and the United States.

For everyone living in the United States, and especially those living aboard a Naval ship, life changed dramatically Dec. 7, 1941. Young men and women proudly enlisted in the military ready to help in the fight against tyranny. The civilian population banded together, tightened their collective belt, and successfully fought against our enemies. Meanwhile, the military bravely battled in every comer of the world, across land and sea. Lawrence K. Bichler was part of the sacrifice and from 1943 spent almost three years at the Veteran's Hospital in Walla Walla.

After fighting back from his wartime injuries at the hospital in Walla Walla, Dad used his Navy training and eventually became a journeyman union pipefitter at Grant County Mechanical in Moses Lake. A bit later he met and married my mom, Nancy Bichler. By the way, I was part of the package and he eagerly accepted me into his family and called me his son. I am proud to be Lawrence's son, and equally proud of his many accomplishments.

Dad is survived by his two sons, Richard (Betty) of Belfair, Wash.; Larry of Seattle, brothers and sisters Eva Dahl, Bergetta Axtman, Paul Bichler, Sister Maureena (Caroline) Bichler, Victoria Dudsches, and Armelia Snyder, and grandchildren James of Seattle and Karen of Bremerton, Wash. His loving wife Nancy and sister Amelia preceded him in death.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007, and Lawrence was laid to rest next to his wife, Nancy, and his parents, Henry and Martina Bichler at the Moses Lake Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements are in care of Benson Family Funeral Service.
I think that this is the man who married Catherine O'Hare, but I have no proof. I found him on the 1920 & 1930 census, and found his draft registration card. In the 1920 census, it says he was divorced.

Catherine (O'Hare) Bichler was living with her brother in Kenosha, WI in 1918. I assume Theodore and Catherine were divorced by then.

Please e-mail me at gemini779@comcast.net. I do believe there is a connection. The Bichler/Bicklers have given me problems in church records in this country. It is sometimes hard to determine if this is the same family with many spelling variations. My Magdalene's/Madeleine's linage is: she is the daughter of Joseph LeJeune Bichler, who is the son of Henri, who is the son of Joseph, who is the son of Jean Georges born 1641 in Oberbruk, Aargau, Switzerland. She is definitely from Hottviller and from what I can tell most of the town is related one way or another. I also have records of many Hottviller residents immigrating to this part of Pennsylvania, USA. Looking forward to hearing from you. Kathleen

Dear Marv, You also can contact me at my e-mail address--gemini779@comcast.net. I have been working with your John, who posted your website, for quite sometime exchanging Bichler/Hottviller info back and forth. I don't believe that I have anything on Elisabeth, but as John knows, if it is in the Pittsburgh Diocese archives system, I may be able to look her up. I index their old church records. Give me a week or so, as I just returned from vacation, but I will see what I can find. Also, do you know what county Elisabeth married in? Kathleen

Conrad Bichler b. 1844 Switzerland>St. Louis, MO and George Heckner

1880 US Census, St. Louis City, MO, District 162 lists Conrad Bichler, age 36, from Switzerland and his wife, Annie, age 21, from Missouri. Two children are listed, a son, Joseph, age 4, and a daughter, Annie, age 2, both born in Missouri. Also listed is a brother to Conrad, named Joseph, age 40, as a farm hand. Also listed is a Henry Woerning, age 37. Also listed is George Heckner, age 29, as a farm hand. George is from Switzerland. We believe that his sister is Maria (Mary) Heckner Kuring Hess also from Switzerland, born Dec. 1844, who is our direct ancestor. Mary Heckner married Charles Kuring in Clinton Co., IL in 1862. We are searching for Mary's HECKNER relatives and found this about George which we think is her brother. Want to know if BICHLER and HECKNER families are connected. Listed on Census as living near Clark Road and by River Depair, correct spelling is River Des Peres.

I am wondering if anyone has any info on George & Sarah Bichler from Avonmore Pa? George was born around 1880. Thier children were Christopher (my grandfather) Morris, Genevive, and Mary. Sarah was married to an Albert Alcorn before my great grandfather. But I believe her maiden name was Bilby. Any info would be appreciated.

Search the Ancestry World Tree. Here you will find information about Peter's parents and grandparents.

By accident I saw your message dating back one year. As far as I understood yoor ggggrandmother was Magdalena Bichler was born in Hottweiler. Correct?
Hottweiler was and is still a very small village with at that time well below 1.000 inhabitants.
My own gggfather was also born there, but his name is Julius Bickler. Fyg: in the whole region lived a lot of Bicklers, who eventually fled Switzerland 200/100 years earlier. If you believe that there might be a connection please contact me. Thanks
Martin

My ggggrandmother was Mary Magdalene Bichler who also was from Hottweiler & migrated to Pittsburgh in the 1830's. She was married to Johann B. Maier/Meyer & she settled in St. Mary Assumption Parish with other Bichler's who had migrated earlier. The names Decker & Fey also play an important role in that church's early history. I am also interested in finding out more information on this family, but can also provide information on the names mentioned.

Your method of tracking your ancestors was ingenious. I've tried finding my Brichlers in the LDS records, Familytree CD's, Genealogy.com, and others. I've even looked through the Hottviller Church records at the local LDS library. So far, I've had no luck. I'll look for Brichlers in the International White Pages that you suggested just to see how many there are in the world.

Unfortunately I cannot send the pictures that I have of Hottviller over the Net since they are on VHS tape. I took a 35mm camera on the trip but I ended up using my Videocamera 95% of the time so that I would have a narration of the events. I will still be happy to make you a copy but I'll have to send it by regular mail. Let me know an address if you still want it. My Email is tribbe@one.net

As I mentioned the tape is about 20 minutes long. To reach the town, you drive down a long, steep, narrow, tree lined road. I turned the camera on and let it run until we arrived at the Church. I have pictures of the inside of the Catholic Church and a tour of the graveyard around the Church. I show many closeups of the Bichler-Lang tombstones. Next we drove up the hillside to some of the surrounding farms and houses. I photographed many of the Catholic shrines that were along the roadside.

Look forward to hearing back.

Mike

My Grandfather, Melvin Beachler told me once that his Grandfather, Jean Jennier Bichler immagrated to the US from Belgium. But, my research indicates the he was born in Hottviller, France. The turn of the century census doesn't find him anywhere and his children report that he was from Belgium. He died in Wyoming in 1921, but his death certificate doesn't list parents or his origin. Have you any information?

Hottviller

I've actually made contact with relatives in Hottviller. I finally found the town on a map on the internet. It was a simple matter to find ten Bichlers' from the International Internet White Pages. I wrote a letter, used a English to French Translator Program and mailed individual letters to the ten Bichlers. I've had replies from two of the families (in one case all tree generations have written). I have found that we have ancestors in common, complete with paintings and photographs of the ancestors from the late 1700s and early 1800s. I feel fortunate to have been able to find these people for they are warm and welcoming... dispelling any myths that the French are unfriendly to Americans (I doubted the truth in the myths already). Mike, I would welcome the copy of the video that you've made in Hottviller. My E-mail address is; bchlrmrv@AOL.com Thank you so much for your interest of my posting. I would be happy to keep my eyes open for your Brichlers'! Marv
