I have very little by the way of facts or anything else.
This Bickerstaff came to America at the onset of the Revolutionary War. After he settled in western Pennslyvania. The only names start in 1825, Alexander, his grandson. Any clues or guesses to get started would be appreciated

t

Hello!
There are so many Bickerstaffs in Lancs that you'll need to give some idea of where yours were, in order to receive some useful ideas. The odd date wouldn't come amiss either!

Jo

Andrea, My relationship to Elizabeth Jane Alexandra Head Bickerstaffe, is through her father,(my Ggrandfather), Isaac Head/Heads. E.J.A.H.B. was a child of his first family with Ann Fortescue. I am the granddaughter of Robert Ashbridge Heads, b. 1878 in Howden-le-Wear, Durham, England & d. 1937 in Kent, Portage Co., Ohio, USA. Robert was the first child of Isaac Heads' second family with Elizabeth Ashbridge. How do you connect to Isaac Head/Heads? I do not have any photos of Isaac's first family, but have several of his second. I am willing to share this info, if you are interested.

I am seeking a connection to the family Isaac Bickerstaffe, b. 1860 and m.1883 to Elizabeth Jane Alexandra Head, in Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire. My connection would be with Elizabeth's father, Isaac Head, b. 1838 in Dalston,Cumberland...her mother was Ann Fortescue. She may have had a brother, William or John William Bickerstaffe.

Re: Bickerstaff Lancashire United Kingdom

Thanks for the linage of the name, but my Uncle has another story:

For all of you to keep in your family records, one other origin of the family name.

Uncle Clyde has an other explanation:

Circa 960 AD, As Fiefdoms quarreled over land or other matters,
it did not pay to gather surfs (working farmers) and Knights to kill or war on one another,
(War was costly and dead surfs could not work the land for their Lords, as labor was hard to come by)
So, each faction would camp on a ridge of a valley opposite each other ready for battle.

Instead of fighting, each side would choose a staff of "bickers" to mediate their differences. Eventually, as the
story goes, These mediators became "The Bickerstaff''s". (HA...!! Peace makers, I like it already)

(per Uncle Clyde Lester Bickerstaff) I tend to like his story the best, but can find no written proof of it.

Lester M. Bickerstaff
April 23, 2007

Bickerstaff Lancashire United Kingdom

There is a hamlet in Lancashire called "Bickerstaffe".It is not mentioned in the Doomsday Survey of 1086, the parish came into existence soon after this date. The earliest record is found in the King's Pipe Roll in the 12th century. From 1180 to 1208 many references are found in ancient documents such as the "Scanbrick Charters" and "Testa de Nevill" but the main source of information is the records of Cockersand Abbey and Burscough Priory.
Some say the origin of the name "Bickerstaff" agree that "staffe", "stad" or "stath" come from the Norse word "st'ad'r" which means "place" Some say "Bicker" comes from "Beocera" (Bee-Keeper) or "Birce" (Burch) or "Bikan" (Drinking Cup) Generally speaking "Bicker" comes from the Scandinavian "By-kian" (By-water) of "Village-marsh). "Bickerstaff" therefore, probably comes from "By-kiarr Stad" or "Place of the Marsh Village"

I received a few letters from James Cecil "Johnny" Norwood b 21 Feb 1924 in Orange Texas. I haven't heard from him in a while ( 4-5 years). He was in poor health at that time so he may have passed. He was in Beaumont TX when I last heard from him.

Here is what I have:

Jimmie Bickerstaff married Cecil Norwood but they were only married a very short time. James lived with his mother & grandparents until he was 8-10 years old. James Norwood had no children. He does have the one half brother, Joe Carroll Lippeat. His mother remarried when he was about 10 years old. I understand that Joe Carroll has a son but I have no info on that.

Also Pete Bickerstaff b 22 Feb 1854 LA? d 13 Aug 1936 burried in Orange TX
wife is Ella Dewees b 20 Mar 1875 New Orleans LA? d 07 Sept 1948 buried in Orange TX

This is really all I have. Contact me if you need any additional info at my email l8rg8r@hughes.net

Debbie
It does look like 2 different Norwoods.

The one I have is James Cecil "Johnny" Norwood b. 21 Feb 1924 to Jimmie BIckerstaff and Cecil Norwood. I didn't ask how he got the nickname Johnny since his name is James? Good luck! I had really hoped this may have been a break on the Bickerstaff line. I can't get past Pete Bickerstaff b 22 Feb 1854. Very frustrating.

Not sure why my email came back. I have satellite and it was windy yesterday so try again if you need anything.

Debbie
l8rg8r@hughes.net

My grandfather was P.B. "Pete" Bickerstaff ca 1905 Orange TX, his father was Pete Bickerstaff, b. ca 1852 Louisana wife Ella.

I have very little info than this. I had been searching but became frustrated that I couldn't move on so I haven't researched in a while. I found a 1900 Orange Co TX census page 44A , ED 57, Sheet #19 Line #11 Dwelling #310, Family # 312 with info:

Pete Bickerstaff b Feb 1852 48
Ella (wife) Mar 1872 28
married 12 years
Mildren (dau) Jan 1889 11
Maude (dau) Dec 1890 9
Eugene (son) Apr 1893 7
Cecil (son) Dec 1895 4
Katie (dau) May 1898 2

In 1910 Orange Co TX census:

Pete Bickerstaff 56
Ella 37
Cecil 14
Katie 11
Pete (son) 5
Jimmie (dau) 2
John (son) 7mos

Jimmie had 2 sons, James C Norwood and JC Lippeat.
Glea

Regarding my previous posting, the Battle of King's Mountain was fought in South Carolina, just south of the North Carolina line and very near Tennessee. King's Mountain is an outcrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. That's not all that far from where you indicate your family lived.

Nancy

Glea

Funny that you would ask about the BICKERSTAFFs and the Revolutionary War. I just posted a response to the CHITWOOD list regarding Captain James CHITWOOD, who was hanged after the Battle of King's Mountain. It described how Mrs Martha BICKERSTAFF, wife of Captain Aaron BICKERSTAFF (who had been mortally wounded at the Battle of King's Mountain in 1780) had cut down the body of Captain CHITWOOD and, with the help of friends, carried his body about a half mile away to Benjamnin BICKERSTAFF's place, where they buriend his body.

Perhaps these names could give you some leads on your BICKERSTAFF family that was connected to the Revolutionary War.

Have you Googled: Revolutionary War = Bickerstaff ? Might give some further information.

Happy hunting.

Nancy

I too seek info on a Peter Bickerstaff.
I believe he married a Fidelia Simmons.
See Texas Marriage Collection 1814-1909 & 1966-2002 -it shows Peter Bickerstaff, male, marriage date:March 25,1881 to Fidelia Simmons in Jefferson City, Texas.
Name spelled as Biggertstaff in some records.
Texas Death index 1903-2000 shows a Peter Bickerstaff died in Nueces County, Texas February 5, 1938, certificate 9561.
Fidelia was born in Ky in 1866. It is the Simmons line I am researching and there are two Fidelia Simmons of about the same time period. I do not know if this is MY Fidelia or not.
Thank you! Our great grandfather's death certificate names Ellen/Eliner as his mother. He was born July 29, 1882, in Miss. He was an only child, named John Henry Trull. He always said he left home very young and fended for himself. There has been a story passed around of him working on a river boat. Perhaps it was his grandfather Bickerstaff's boat?

I think it's a real possibility that as he was an only child, one of his parents died very young. If you find any further info about Ellen or her husband, John G. Trull, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Judy, It seems to me I've heard that Alexander Bickerstaff came to wv in the late 1840's with a brother named Nathan. He came from Beaver Co. Pa, but noot sure.

Re: Lucretia Bickerstaff, Monroe County MS

I have been researching the Bickerstaff's in Monroe Co., MS as they are my Great grandmother, Martha Harriet's, family. She ended up in Oklahoma but I know that many bickerstaff's went to Texas. I do not have anything on Lucretia, other than her name, but do have information on her parents, etc. Would love to share. Contact me at nmjodie@yahoo.com if you are interested.

Joleen

He was the nephew of my GGgrandfather. He was an outlaw in Texas after the Civil War and was shot by the townspeople of Alvarado as the gang rode into town. Another member of the gang, Josiah Thompson, is also buried in the cemetery. I would be willing to share whatever information I have on this person and his family.

Joleen
