Hi, My great great grandfather was Alexander Bickerstaff, he was born in 1824. He was born in Beaver Falls, Beaver County, Pa. He moved to Ritchie County VA/wv in 1849 and married Elizabeth Nutter in there. He possibly had brothers, named Nathan, James and Frank or George. I would appreciate any info that you have to offer---if this is relative I will share my Bickerstaff info with you.

i am looking for Edna Vincent Bickerstaff she died in Memphis in 1911 and at her parents but they are all from Franklin & Colbert Co., AL. I can't find out which bickerstaff she was married to. The burial certificate states she is buried in Shefffield, AL. DFoes any of this ring a bell? Thanks been searching for her Bickerstaff for years! They would have married between 18800-1900. in AL I belive because her parents didn't move to Memphis until 1899. Thanks

Robert Bickerstaff-British Soldier

George Hall aka Joris Haal was born in 1636 in England and died on 18 March 1676/77 in Kingston, Ulster Co., New York. He married Elizabeth Bickerstaff in 1662 in Kingston, Ulster Co., New York. She was born 1640 in Kingston, Ulster Co, New York and died 1712 in Kingston, Ulster Co., New York. She was the daughter of Robert Bickerstaff who was born circa 1615 in England. Note: Robert Bickerstaff was a British soldier, and was stationed at Esopus, (Kingston), Ulster Co. New York and given land at Marbletown, New York in 1668. He was discharged in 1670. This is just about all the data I've got on the Bickerstaff surname in America.
Heidi take a look at my reply to Anthony. Can you fill me in on Hannah's line. Other than her birth and death, I have nothing further. Thanks for the information about Edward, I didn't have that. The name you couldn't read was probably Phoebe as she was born in 1857.

William is interesting as he's a Civil War volunteer. He was wounded at Seven Pines during the Peninsula Campaign from Yorktown towards Richmond. He was sent home but rejoined the unit and they were sent to New Bern, NC to guard the coast. They eventually went inland to Plymouth NC when he and about 2800 other Union soldiers were captured. They were sent to Andersonville prison where he died. His stone at Andersonville is listed as Biggerstaff which is a common derivation used in the South. My brother visited the site and found the headstone.

There's an annual event in Plymouth each April commemorating the event and as a descendant your now a "Plymouth Pilgrim".

See http://livinghistoryweekend.com/ for information and "The 101st Pennsylvania in the Civil War: It's capture and POW Experience by Harold B.
I do have a James Carroll Bickerstaff in my records. Not sure if he is yours, though.
I show James "Carroll" Bickerstaff born OCT 7, 1913 in Cherokee County, Texas. He died NOV 30, 1973, and is buried in the Bullard City Cemetery, Bullard, Smith County, Texas. Carroll was the son of George Lee Bickerstaff and Nellie L. Cawthon. George Lee was the son of John Thompson Bickerstaff and Tenora Carroll. John Thompson Bickerstaff was the son of William S. Bickerstaff and Nancy Elizabeth Thompson who settled in Smith County, Texas prior to 1850, from Cotton Gin Port, Mississippi.

If this sounds familiar, I have more on the Bickerstaff family. Let me know.

According to one researcher, there is some misinformation in the Monroe Co. book article, which the person who wrote it agreed to, but it was too late to change. I think Sarah could well be the female age 10-15 - she would have been about 12 in 1820. And I suspect the other younger female was a daughter-in-law. Four males under the age of 10 seems a bit much for someone John's age - maybe some or even all of these boys may be grandchildren.

Thanks!

According to my records, yes, the John Bickerstaff of 1830 Monroe Co., MS is the same as the 1820 Maury Co., TN. However, he did not have a daughter Sarah. History of Monroe Co. MS has his children as Wilborn, Williams (Wm S.?), Julathen, John H., Seborn, John L.
BUT...note the absence of any daughters! And the 1820 census had females listed on it. So perhaps it is possible.

The problem with this family is that they had many John and Johnson (who went by John). My own GGgrandfather was one of them Johnson "RJ" Bickerstaff.

It's very confusing.

Am still trying to connect my line to these Bickerstaffs. Would love to hear from you if you are still interested. I can only go back to my Grandfather. I only know 3 things about my ggrandfather, the name "Harrie" that was written on Grandpa's original S.S. application, 1880 census stating he was deceased and born in Miss.
Grandpa was 2, his sister was 3 month old, both born Ark. I have found where his mother, Mary Knight Bickerstaff remarried Aug 1880, but nothing on her or any of the family members since. Have been trying to connect Harrison J., but so far no luck.
Would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

Weather very strange for Dallas, Texas. Nights 23/28 F' and days 45 to 55 We've had two snow storms blow through having a white Christmas, first since 1923/1926. Very beautiful 3 inch deep, but didn't last long to warm.

We usually have a hard weather front move in, stay for a few days then the Bahia desard winds warm us back to around 50 to 70 F', very pleasant.

Thanks for the threads, I'll check them out.

Happy New Year 2010 and Good Health,

Les

Les

Yes, I'm in Ireland. Here is another site with records of births/marriages/burials in Antrim and Down.
www.ancestryireland.com
Register free as a basic member. A basic search is free and will throw up a few (or several) options with a little detail. If you're lucky enough to see something of real interest, it will cost £4Stg. to view the full record for 48hrs, so be prepared to print it.
I've used this successfully a few times, and was amazed at the details given on births and marriages. Well worth the money when it is the correct record!

The official 1901 Irish Census is due to come online within a few months. This will be on the same site as the 1911 Census which is already on line and free to view.
www.census.nationalarchives.ie

Hope Texas is a lot warmer than Ireland just now....it's freezing here!!!

Kay

I have not been able to trace my family in Ireland either, although there are some family stores that three brothers of my family were contacted by an Ireland county tax office(circa 1812 to 1865)about land that taxes were owed, that if taxes were paid the land was theirs. The taxes were more than the lands worth so nothing was done and forgotten.

There are folks in Ireland willing to help, but some of them cost for the research. Also, I have noticed more info is coming online daily as research is being done...so keep trying.

A membership on Ancestry.com would help. I am not promoting them, but my sister-in-law (my researcher)have found a great deal more leads than before she joined.

Sorry, I'm not much help....keep me posted...!!!

Les

Hi,

I am research the Corbett side of my family and have come to a dead end. William Corbett (b.1846 Co.Down, Ireland) and Margarite Anne Bickerstaff (b.1848 Co. Down, Ireland) moved over to Hartlepool at some point between 1869 and 1881. Two of their sons (William Hugh, b. 29/08/1866 and Samuel b. 1869) were born over in Belfast, Ireland.

Any information about the family before they came to Hartlepool would be much appreciated. One source indicates that Margarite Bickerstaff may have come from Enoch, Co.Down but I cannot seem to locate this place.

I would also appreciate any ideas as to how to discover details from Ireland as it is proving very difficult to research my family over there.

Thank you,

Helen
The only names start in 1825, Alexander, his grandson. Any clues or guesses to get started would be appreciated

t

Andrea, My relationship to Elizabeth Jane Alexandra Head Bickerstaffe, is through her father,(my Ggrandfather), Isaac Head/Heads. E.J.A.H.B. was a child of his first family with Ann Fortescue. I am the granddaughter of Robert Ashbridge Heads, b. 1878 in Howden-le-Wear, Durham, England & d. 1937 in Kent, Portage Co., Ohio, USA. Robert was the first child of Isaac Heads' second family with Elizabeth Ashbridge. How do you connect to Isaac Head/Heads? I do not have any photos of Isaac's first family, but have several of his second. I am willing to share this info, if you are interested.

I am seeking a connection to the family Isaac Bickerstaffe, b. 1860 and m.1883 to Elizabeth Jane Alexandra Head, in Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire. My connection would be with Elizabeth's father, Isaac Head, b. 1838 in Dalston,Cumberland...her mother was Ann Fortescue. She may have had a brother, William or John William Bickerstaffe.

Elizabeth is listed on the 1871 British Census with sibling, William Head and parents Isaac & Ann Fortescue, living in Witton-le-Wear, Durham, England. Elizabeth's father, Isaac Head is my Ggrandfather through his second marriage to Elizabeth Ashbridge. I would love to exchange info & photos with descendants of this family.
