Sue Hi,
I am trying to trace some connections to my late Grandmother Florence Louise Bickerton, who was born in Lower Mitton (which would have been evolving into Stourport around that time) in 1901, according to our information she married one William Sadler Hudson, my Grandfather, although information about him is very unclear.

Hope to Hear from You

William James Hudson

Hi,Bickerton and Smailes feature in some work I have been doing recently. Is there any connection?
Edward Smith, farmer, born pre 1819, married Ann Smailes Bickerton (born after 1819) on 31 May 1840 at St Mary's Gateshead. Ann was the daughter of Henry Smailes, an attorney.
They had one son, Roger Bickerton Smith, born 6 July 1842 in Burnopfield, Durham. Roger was a farmer and agricultural contractor and married Elizabeth Heron Clark, born 1885 in Alnwick, Northumberland. The marriage took place at St Andrews Parish Church, Newcastle upon Tyne.
They had eight children, including my grandfather Edward Smith, agricultural contractor, born 1872 at Willington on Tyne (died 1846 at Gosforth). Edward married Ann Graham born 13 Nov 1969 at Tynemouth and had one son, my father another Edward Smith. They had an agricultural business sited at The Fold Monkseaton and then in Gosforth until 1951.

Richard Barron Bickerton was born 1868 at Preston Gubbals, Shropshire, England to Richard Bickerton and his wife Jane (?Hampton). Richard Bickerton is a farmer there in the 1871 census, with his wife and son. After that they disappear. Perhaps they emigrated. Does anyone recognise the name, please?

Have you found anything more on your Bickertons of Shropshire?

I have William H Bickerton (49yo)in 1861 Census married to a Blanche living in Newton, Shropshire. Their son, also William H b abt 1843, married Ellen Bassestt.

The Oswesry & Border Counties Advertizer-Oct 20, 1869: Marriage Notice:
"19th Oct, 1869 at Trinity Church, Oswestry by the Rev. F Cashe Assisted by Rev. E.B. Corbett - William Henry Bickerton, Jun. of Newton-on-the-Hill in this county to Ellen Bassett, of the Hollies near the former place."

Ellen Bassett is descended from Henry Warren of near Oswestry, Shropshire.

I live in California so I'm not very familiar with the towns in Shropshire. We did visit Shrewsbury and Oswestry a few years ago but didn't see much of the surrounding area.

Penny (pennyph@pacbell.net)

hello Eileen,
Received your message, thank you. I have some information on Margaret Bickerton I found her on the 1851 England census-she is a widow and has a 24 year old single daughter at home and a 21 year old son Samuel who is a wheelwright apprentice. Both were born in Swettemham, Cheshire. Margaret was born in Mobberly, Cheshire and is a widow and runs a farm of 28 acres and has 11 labourors. The census also shows that she has a grandaughter Mary who is 5 years old and born in Withington, Cheshire,a granson, Edmund who is 3 and born in Swettenham. I need to look some more to make sure that this Mary is the person I am looking for, if so, her mother is Frances Bickerton Grantham-her husband is Joseph Grantham and I have looked for years to find him but I now realize that I was looking in the wrong location for him. I am going out of town for a few days and when I get back will get busy and get in touch with you if I find anythin further. I will also look up Margaret further and see if I can find her husband. I think his name may be George.
Beryl

As it turns out my G Grandmother was the child of Morris Hibbs and Charlotte Rodgers, Morgan, Hibbs who later married William Bickerton and bore a son Alma. Charlotte remained in Pa. after William went to Kansas as did Alma. Thus my ancestors are tied to the Bickertons. My G Grandfather's diaries are filled with Bickertons as they worked and lived together in West Elizabeth.

My connection with the Bickertons is through William. He married my great great Grandmotner Charlotte Rodgers, Morgan, Hibbs. She was married 3 times. Her last husband was William. He traveled west to Kansas to begin a new branch of the Mormon Church. Charlotte remained in West Elizabeth, PA with their son Alma. They are mentioned in my great garndfathers diaries many times. He was married to Emily Hibbs, Charlotte's daughter by her marriage to Morris Hibbs. If you would like more information please let me know and I can direct you to the folks who have the most info about the Bickertons of PA
Sherry

The Thomas Henry Bickerton you mentioned at wndsworth was my grandfather's uncle. He was aPrimiive Methodist clergyman. He had 2 sons and 3 daughters. They are in the 1881 UK census. One son was killed in WW1 at Theipval and one son and his wife and daughter were killed in the blitz 15.10.1940.His daughters were Dorothy and Sarah and a daughter some time later called "Mollie". His sons were Samuel Thomas Leslie and Cliffordt Phillips Bickerton. Thomas Bickerton was born in Dawley Shopshire in 1968. His mother was Sarah and his father Samuel. I think his mother may have been Sarah Martin Icke. He had a sister Mary Ann (my greatgrandmother) a brother samuel, and Robert and a sister Susan. They lived in Church Road Dawley. I have paintings of Sarah and Samuel and other family members. Rev Bickerton had postings in a around London. I have a summary f his "Obit". He died on 16th May 1955. I would like to contact and family of his son who survived or his daughters. My great grandparents George Perks Lewis and Maryann (nee Bickerton) left for Queensland Australiain 1885.

Does anyone have any information on a John Bickerton. He married an Elizabeth Forrester, I can find them on the 1891 census, which says they were both born in Whitchurch in Shropshire, but can't find them on any others. They had a daughter Harriet Ann who was in service in 1891 aged 14 years. She married a Joseph Turner in 1895, she was born in 1876 in Stoke-on-Trent.

Did Rev Thomas Bickerton have a daughter called "Mollie". Was he resident in Cornwall in perhaps the 1920's. I am trying to locate the brother of my greatgrandmother, Mary anne Bickerton who was born in Shropshire maybe. Her Brother was Rev. Thomas Bickerton. I have some photos of him and his family at his daughters wedding. the photo is marked St. Ives. on the back has " Uncle Tom and daughter Mollie Bude". I believe Bude is in Cornwall.

Hi

Very interested in your message on the Bickerton website. This is all new to me but I seemed to have spent hours reading through this information how interesting. Anyway my family were from the Staffs area - Chesterton/Newcastle. My grandfather was Terence and married to Adeline with 10 children my father Terence being the eldest son, the others were Millicent, Frank, Henry, Jean, Reg, Mollie, Ken, Patricia and Adeline but not in that order of birth. My father bought his family (wife Annie and two daughters Jean and Lynne) to Australia in 1958 and my brother Terry was born in 1963. We are the only Bickertons in Tasmania. My great grandfather was also Terence but that is where my knowledge ends. My grandfather was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the first world war. I would love to hear if there is any connection with you or if you know of anyone else.

Jean Weeding

Hi Patricia, I read your postings and wondered how you fit in to the 4th generation of the Bickerton family. I checked out the Bickerton link and found A LOT of unknown information about that side of my family. My Great Grandmother was Ada Bickerton Boyd, daughter of John Henry Bickerton. Thanks for the information. - Heather Hartman

Hi Patricia, Wow! That was fast. My grandfather is John (Jack) Boyd (Ada's son). My mother is Gwen Boyd Berohn. I was just there this last weekend looking through old pictures and I think I took a couple of Marion. If you'd like to email me rather than correspond through the message board my email address is Mortal4ad@earthlink.net. I'd be happy to scan and send the pictures I have if you'd like. Nice to hear from someone I'm actually related to! Thanks again!

-Heather Hartman
