BICKHAM DNA Results

The latest results relate to two participants from the very large 'Southern Bickham' line, both said to be descendants of Benjamin Bickham, one of the original five brothers who originated this extensive line. We expected the 12 markers tested to be the same but they are not. Two markers out of the 12 are different. These two participants descend from two different sons of Benjamin Bickham and the DNA results may indicate a mutation. We are taking a close look at the genealogical research and put out a plea for more participants for the Bicjkham DNA Project.

New Participant, BICKHAM DNA Project

After eighteen months of project activity, the Bickham DNA Project has it's sixth participant. He is also a descendant of Benjamin Bickham of the 'Southern Bickham' line. It will be three or four weeks before his DNA results are available however they should match that of our fifth participant who is also a descenant of Benjamin Bickham. We need more participants from the 'Southern Bickham' line, especially descendants of the brothers other than Benjamin Bickham. Help further Bickham research and join the Bickham DNA Project. I will be glad to send additional details.

Hello Kyle,
It is great to hear from a Bickham who actually still lives in England. My own most distantly known ancestor was a Richard Bickham who was here in the Colonies by 1698. If you want to contact me directly my email address is chalfort@earthlink.net. Meanwhile, you might be interested in taking a look at my Bickham website. The URL is http://home.earthlink.net/~chalfort/bickham I look forward to hearing more from you. Carlene
PS I have a grandson with the name Kyle David but a different surname.

Bickhams from Ashburton Devon to Newfoundland, Canada

Some time ago, I found a newspaper death listing for the following person -

Thursday, January 17, 1833
Died, on Tuesday last the 15th instant, Mr. WALTER BICKHAM, a native of Ashburton, Devon, an old respectable inhabitant of this Town, aged 65 years. His funeral will take place tomorrow, from his residence near Messrs. Newman & Co.
http://ngb.chebucto.org/Newspaper-Obits/nflder-1831-34.shtml
The Newfoundlander 1831 to 1834.
Miscellaneous News Articles

Since Walter is a family name in my BICKHAM family, and Ashburton Devon IS where the family came from, I'd like to know if he was related to my family.

Can anyone possibly help me in finding out more details about this Walter? Like when did he arrive in Canada? Who his parents were, Was he married, if so to whom and when? And did he have any children?

His age at death gives a YOB around 1768. There's nothing in the IGI for the name/date.

RobynneL

http://ngb.chebucto.org/Newspaper-Obits/nflder-1831-34.shtml
(the newspaper article)

Bickham Questions

I am looking for information on the Bickham family. I have traced my family back to Hugh Bickham in Logan County, Ohio. I thought I could go back further than him but I have discovered that he(Hugh)is somewhat of a mystery. I have records from previous attempts of other family members research but they as well hit a road block with Hugh. I would like any information anyone could shed upon this or any other information that could be provided. My grandfater is William Curry Armitstead Jr. still residing in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. I also have information that was being passed between my great Aunt Mylred Bickham and a Jack Bickham(Oklahoma area) about our families, but they are both deceased now and the information is hard to follow. If any one knows anything I would love to hear it. Thank You.
Anne

Hello. I'm also looking for your Oscar who married Louise. In the 1920 census it shows Louisa 44, O. 58 and Olivia 4 7/12. In the 1930 census it shows Louise and Stella Bickham living with Mike and Tilly Seaquist. Stella married William Alford and they had three children. Gloria, Jimmie Oscar and Tatiana. Does any of this sound familiar? I found an Oscar in the 1870 census b c 1855 with Zachariah Bickham and family.
First Bickham DNA Results

We now have results back from the lab for three participants in the Bickham DNA Project. Two of these three participants are descendants of George Washington Bickham, a son of Hugh Bickham of Kentucky and Logan County, Ohio. The twelve markers from these two participants are an exact match. No suprise there.

The other participant is a descendant of Richard Bickham of 1698 Burlington, New Jersey. There is a three marker difference from the other two, indicating no relationship between this individual and the other two. This also indicates that there was no relationship between their respective most distant known ancestors - Hugh Bickham and Richard Bickham.

It has been speculated that Hugh Bickham was a son of Caleb Bickham and Rachel Scull. Caleb Bickham was a grandson of Richard Bickham of Burlington, New Jersey. DNA testing is proving that this could not be correct.

What else will DNA testing show? More participants are needed, especially from other Bickham lines. This will give more data to analyze. Contact me for more information.

John Wesley Erwin of Caddo Par, LA was in TX in 1860

I have, up until now, been unable to find John Wesley Erwin (JWE) on the 1860 census. I have found a John W Erwin of the correct age (19), b in LA and living in Brazos Co., TX
with the family of John W Bickham. Since the age is correct, birthplace is correct, and the family he lived with has his mother's maiden name, I am tentatively identifying ths
person as JWE of Caddo Par., LA later of Cass Co., TX., b March 15, 1841 in LA, d October 10, 1913 in Linden, Cass Co., TX, Baptist Minister.

JWE researchers, do you have other confirmation of this? I knew he was orphaned and lived with a Bickham family in Caddo Par., LA and that these people died before he was
19. Surely, since he wrote widely and has a family who knew about him, someone can confirm this as fact.

How does he relate to the John W. Bickham he was living with?

E-mail me at hudsonpw@ev1.net or post to this forum.

- Philip Hudson

Albert Brown Bickham

Albert and Emily Laura had a daughter named Carrie Bickham (my g-grandmother) born 23 Mar 1874 in Copiah Co. MS, died 9 Mar 1943 in Memphis, Shelby Co. TN. Carrie is also buried in Memphis, Shelby Co. TN.

After Albert died, Emily Laura married John D. Bailey (also known as J. D.). He was born 1849 in Copiah Co. MS. John D. and Emily Laura were married 5 Feb 1879 in Copiah Co. MS. They had a son named John D. Bailey Jr. and he was born abt 1899 in Copiah Co. MS.

I would greatly appreciate any information on Albert Brown Bickham, Emily Laura Otis, Cornelius Otis, any other children that Albert & Emily Laura and John D. & Emily Laura may have had and any information on Albert's brother, George Washington Warner Bickham.

Also in 2001 on Genealogy.com, John Crane uploaded a list of descendants (almost 8,000) of the five Bickham brothers. This hyperlink is no longer active. If anyone knows how I can get a copy of that list, I would greatly appreciate that also.

Thank you so very much!
Sources: Carrie Bickham's Death Certificate, Census Records, Marriage Records, Loyd Bickham and John Dorr Crane's book, "The Southern Bickhams".
Bickham DNA Update

We have four participants and all kits have been received by the testing lab. Three of these participants descend from George Washington Bickham, one of the sons of Hugh Bickham. Hugh was born about 1770, married in Kentucky, and eventually settled in Logan County, Ohio. The other participant is a descendant of Richard Bickham, through Richard's son, Thomas Bickham. Richard was in Burlington County, New Jersey, in 1698. We are now in a waiting mode for the results of these four DNA tests. We do need more participants, especially from other Bickham lines. Contact me for additional information, as I am the Group Administrator. My address is chalfort@earthlink.net

bmorgan, the email address I had for you is no longer valid. Mail sent to it returns to me as being unable to deliver. Can you contact me directly at chalfort@earthlink.net How can you help?
One of the things we hope to determine with this study is just what you have mentioned - the possible parentage of Hugh Bickham. Is he in some way related to Caleb Bickham (husband of Rachel Scull and Mary Hunn), which would mean he possibly descended in some unknown presently unknown manner from Richard Bickham of New Jersey.
Do you descend from a different son of Hugh Bickham other than George Washington Bickham? Your brother has the surname Bickham, right? If your answer to both of those questions is yes, please contact me and I will tell you how to join the project. Or contact me anyway.

You said in your message you found Pearl and her siblings in this area. What area? And is your Pearl living or dead. My Pearl (born PURCILLER) had 8 sisters and 1 brother, and died in Mar/Apr 1972. She would have been his wife when he died. Don't know the dates but probably sometime in 1920/30's maybe 40's. They also may have lived in Louisiana a for a time. Trying to find his name, and if there were any children from this marriage. She had been married before (Pumphrey) and had at least 2 children from her first marriage.

We are part of the Bickham family of KY, Ohio, At this time we do not know of any link to the William Bickham that you have listed as being on the war memorial. If you do get information, I hope that you will post it. A Bickham DNA project has been started to see if links to the several branches in the US can be established. Perhaps it will ultimately shed some light on the Mr. Bickham from your area. Betty Bickham

There are no dates on the markers just a Main marker with the name Bickham and the surrounding markers with the following names:
Sallie
Buck
Doss
Grace
Claude
Clyde

I hope that this helps someone with their quest. As stated I have pictures so if you are interested I will scan them and email them to you.

Thanks
Melanie Bickham
Elizabeth Bickham/Beckham m. William Taunton, 1833, GA

Looking for any info on Elizabeth Bickham (Beckham?), b. c1814, GA, who married William Taunton/Tanton on 2 June 1833 in Washington Co., GA. She was William’s second wife, and they had 2 children together: Mary G. (b. c1839, GA) and Didaniah F. (female; b. c1846, GA). William died before 1850, and Elizabeth and her daughters were listed in Washington Co., GA in the 1850 census, but all three of them just disappear after that. Does anyone recognize this Elizabeth Bickham/Beckham?

Michelle Taunton
mtaunton@mindspring.com
