Thanks so very much, we live in New Zealand, so like you it is not easy as we can't just pop down to the British Archives, we rely on the internet and the odd certificate from the UK that we need to prove something for certain. I think I also remember reading about the Court Marshall, Thomas Ajax Anderson sounds like a very interesting person for sure :-) I will try and contact the National Archives to see what they can tell me, thanks for the information on Caroline's siblings too, the death record for Frances Molesworth Caroline describes her as Thomas and Sarah's 3rd daughter so I guess there was another daughter somewhere that we don't know about?
Simon and Rachel

Caroline Anderson was baptised on 10th April 1808 in Colombo, Ceylon. Church of England Diocesan Office record
Vol 22 page 60.We have the records for the other children too.
There should be information in the National Archives in London on Thomas Ajax as he was in the 19th Regt foot and I recall reading about a Court Marshall and he eventually exchanged out of the Regiment to settle in England.
Larry & Coreen(nee Anderson) Andresen
Anderson-Hollowell ceylon

The son of Captain James Thomas Anderson married an Amelia Hollowell in Colombo, Ceylon at St Peters Church on 27th March 1839. There is conjecture as to which Hollowell brother she was a daughter of, as the Dutch Burgher Union genealogies and Lewis"s book differ. We have the birth of 4 children in Jaffna between 1840 and 1848. Thier son Alfred Edwin Anderson married Sarah Harriett Kriekenbeek..daughter of Henry Anthony Kriekenbeek and Sarah Jane Hollowell in Colombo 24 Feb 1873. The original Captain James Thomas Anderson was from Scotland and was born in 1779, he married in Jaffna in 1803 and died there in 1847. My wife Coreen Anderson has direct descent from these three marriages.
We are trying to find any connection between the early Anderson families in Ceylon, as well as the Hollowell links to Wexford.

Upper Penn, New Jersey Biddle Family

I have researched this Biddle Family for a couple of years now and are now finally asking for some help. It has taken me back to William Hoffman Biddle, a Methodist Preacher who moved his family to Ohio in 1823. There is an Ohio history book (http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Hamilton/HamiltonBio521.htm) that claims he is a descendant of the William Biddle that was a friend of William Penn and that his Grandson, William Parker Biddle retains the gold headed staff presented to the original William by Penn. The original William Biddle's family is well documented and I can't make the link. The book also states that William H. Biddle's father, another William was a Captain in the Rev War. I also can't verify this.
Arthur C. Gans

I found a bit on the Flanagan side and an article claiming William H's father was also William and was in the Rev. war. My GG Grandfather was Rebecca's brother, William B. Biddle.
A.
Biddle in Pittsburgh

Hi- I'm looking for a Biddle who married Lulu G. ? about 1890. They had one son Dewitt A. Biddle.

Mr. Biddle was deceased by 1900 as only Lulu and Dewitt show on the 1900 census.

We have not yet unearthed Mr. Biddle's name or whatever happened to Dewitt. Dewitt was born in 1892.

I suspect that Lulu and Mr. Biddle married in Pittsburgh as she was born and later died in 1906 in Pittsburgh. She was my great-grandmother's first husband and is buried next to him. (as is my great-grandmother- on the other side!)

any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Jennifer

Re: biddle

Thomas Ajax Anderson

The following comes from officer’s birth certificates, will and personal papers, WO 42/1. In the National Archives, (formerly the public record office). This mainly consists of his widow Sarah, claiming a pension after his death, and of course having to prove the marriage and the children. Did not find T A Anderson’s birth date though.

Thomas Ajax Anderson married Sarah Hollowell, 04-May-1807 at Colombo

Julia baptised 10-Apr-1808 at Colombo, born 1807, (child of his first wife, her maiden name unknown)

Caroline, baptised 10-Apr-1808 at Columbo, born 11-Mar-1808

Victoria Maria, baptised 24-Feb-1815 at Batticola, born 08-Oct-1814

William Henry Hulse, baptised 22-Sep-1816 at Trincomalie, born 12-Jun-1816

The same information is in ‘widows pensions and bounty’ – abstracts of applications 1823 to 1825, WO 25/3089. Record for 1825, they got £12 each (£60), as the above record makes no mention of Denvers Wrentmore, who i think, died as an infant, as I have never seen any record of him. Also states that Julia is not living with mother in law, so either is with her mother or if her mother was dead at this point, then relatives.

There are two children from the first marriage, Julia, and Emma, who was born 1804 in Ceylon, I am virtually sure they are the children of Thomas Ajax. In the book by Thomas Ajax, ‘Poem’s written chiefly in India’ published in London in 1809, it is also a google pdf file on the net. Emma and Julia appear a lot, which suggest certainly that his 1st wife was called Julia. Also try ‘infant’ on word search, seems to suggest two daughters from 1st marriage, and maybe the 1st wife died when the children were very young.

Emma marries a George Higgins in Calcutta, on the 23-Feb-1819, they have three children, all born in Calcutta, she dies in Calcutta, 01-Mar-1836

Emma Higgins, b. 09-Sep-1820
George Edmund Higgins, b. 27-Feb-1822
Charlotte Julia Higgins, b. 1823

Her daughter Emma marries a Charles Grissell, 12-Sep-1842, at Agra, (the name grissell turns up as a second name in the children of Victoria Maria Anderson and William Hamilton Nicholetts).

The following comes from the Ceylon Government Gazette, deaths, for 1816, have never found a birth date.
'At Trincomalie on the 23rd June, Frances Molesworth Caroline, third daughter of Captain T. A. Anderson, H. M. 19th Foot'

Sarah Hollowell, although the records seem to say she was born ‘aboard in Gibraltar’ from 1861 census. Have never proved anything, she must have been very young when she married Thomas Ajax.

The family left Ceylon in September 1816, on the ship Alexander for Mauritius and England, arriving in March 1817. They set up home in Chelsea, London. They had one more child.

Louisa Jane was born 17-Feb-1819 in Chelsea, at some point the family moved to Wales.

Thomas Ajax, died in Cardiff, Wales, 08-Feb-1824

Louisa Jane died in 1829 in Cardiff.

On the 20-Apr-1830 Sarah Anderson remarried, to a John Biddle, in Cardiff, who was a ships captain. They went on to have two sons and a daughter.

John Mathew, born 01-Apr-1832 in Bristol

Thomas James Biddle, born 18-Jul-1833 in Bristol

Eliza Anne Biddle, born, 11-Jun-1836 in Chelsea

Both sons, were doctors, and died rather young in their forties, the daughter, Eliza Anne, married a George Douglass Barber, 19-May-1857 in India, he did not survive the ‘Indian Mutiny’ but Eliza Anne did at Lucknow, she later remarried a Adolphus Charles White, on the 17-Mar-1864, in Chelsea.
Both Sons had children, although Eliza Anne did not, and have found no evidence of any.

Sarah Biddle, died in 08-Feb-1870 in London, her death certificate has her age as 76, so born in 1794, married at what 13?. Even found and tried to read her gravestone, but no new information unfortunately. The shipping record for her and family travelling round and leaving Ceylon in 1816 does have a Miss Hollowell, travelling with them, but only from Trincomalee to Colombo and not any further, presumably her sister, but have never come across any other record, naming her.

The baptism of James Henry Kriekenbeek, 05-Dec-1844, witness a certain Mrs Sarah Biddle, nee Hollowell, in England, don’t know what to make of this, but anything is possible.

Below is from the British Library

LIST OF INSCRIPTIONS ON TOMBSTONES AND MONUMENTS IN CEYLON, OF HISTORICAL OR LOCAL INTEREST, WITH AN OBITUARY OF PERSONS UNCOMMEMORATED

By J. Penry Lewis, C.M.G. Ceylon civil servant, retired
Nevrang in collaboration with Lake House bookshop 1993

Colombo
1528. – September 13, 1808 – James Hollowell.
Lieut. James Hollowell, 2nd Ceylon, Regt.,
2nd Lieut. James Baillie’s Regt. (3rd Ceylon), 13th Augt., 1805.
Lieutenant Hollowell belonged to Wexford. He had a son, James Hollowell, who was also in the 2nd Ceylon Regiment, 2nd Lieutenant 1811-17, and Commandant at Chilaw in 1818, and a brother (?) Lieutenant William Hollowell, 3rd Ceylon Regiment. Lieutenant James Hollowell, married at Galle, in 1811, Catherina Adriana Fybrandsz, who was born in 1787 and died December 13, 1858, at Jaffna. Their daughter, Amelia, married James Thomas Anderson, junior, son of James Thomas Anderson of Jaffna.

There were a lot of family connections between Swinhoe, Biddle, Anderson and the Day family in England. It at times does seem to go round in rather large circles. Have more info in anyone in interested. Been doing this for a number of years, although a lot more info is on the net now.

Have never joined T. A. Anderson or Sarah Hollowell, to any contemporary relative of theirs. Which is odd, because usually they turn up, on a census looking after the others children, getting educated in England. Or maybe as guardians of their children. Thomas Ajax died in 1824, aged 45, so probably born around 1779 in Scotland, which the poems suggest was his birth place. He was I would suggest quite a character, that’s from reading the poem’s. The other two books were, ‘A wanderer in Ceylon’ published 1819, and ‘Leave of Absence’ published in 1824.

Caroline Anderson married a Robert Swinhoe, 28-Feb-1828 in Calcutta, I am related to him on my mothers side.
The Anderson Families in British Ceylon are slowly revealing secrets after years of searching.
We have not got a firm connection between our James Thomas Anderson and Thomas Ajax Anderson but the families are slowly intertwining through the Hollowells.
Thomas Ajax Anderson was known as the Soldier Poet and his Army record should be in the British National Archives with the 19th Regt foot.
We have the following family information from Ceylon.
His first wife's name is not known, but they had a child baptised in Colombo on the 10th April 1808, and named her Julia. The reference number is Volume 22 page 60.
His second marriage was to Sarah Hollowell, date unknown, but the following children were baptised in Ceylon.
1. Caroline, baptised 10th April 1808, Colombo, same reference number and date as above entry.
2. Denvers Wrentmore, baptised 6th October 1811 at Colombo,
reference number Vol 22 page 109
3. Frances Caroline, baptised 21st January 1813 at Colombo, reference number Vol 22 page 122
4. Victoria Maria, born 8th October 1814, baptised 24th February at Batticaloa, Volume 23 page 761
5. William Henry Hulse, born 12th June 1816, baptised 22nd February 1816 at St Stephen's Church Trincomalee, reference Volume 20B page 774.
These records are in the Diocesan Library of the Anglican Church in Colombo, and are not available on LDS films as far as we know.
There are applications for baptisms which have been filmed but they are not in any order and it was just luck that we found an application for the baptism of the child of Sarah Jane Hollowell and Henry Anthony Kriekenbeek, to be named James Henry. He was born on the 19th of September 1844, and baptised on the 5th Dec 1844 in Colombo.
The witnesess were James Thomas Anderson, senior, of Jaffna
Mr James Thomas Anderson, junior, of Jaffna.
Mrs Amelia Anderson, (wife of JTA jnr),born Hollowell.
and Mrs Sarah Biddle, born Hollowell...in England.
The Army record of Thomas Ajax Anderson should reveal where and when he was born, where, when and to whom he married and the same information for his children. We searched the Ceylon Rifle Regiment in the National Archives a couple of years ago, but did not know there could be a link between your Thomas Ajax Anderson and our James Thomas Anderson, so did not look at the 19th Regiment records. As we live in Australia it is a long way to go for research.
Larry and Coreen Andresen, nee Anderson.

Hollowell / Anderson / Biddle

Hi, I would be so very grateful if you could let me know where you found confirmation of Sarah Hollowell's marriage date and place to Thomas Ajax Anderson so that I can see if I am able to find out who both Sarah's and Thomas's parents were. I have a birth year for Sarah of either 1793 or 1764, she died in Chelsea, London in February 1870 aged 76. Also do you know where you found the birth or baptismal records for Sarah and Thomas's daughter Caroline as I have read somewhere that Sarah and Thomas left for England in September 1807, this would have made it unlikely that Caroline was born in Ceylon on the birth date I have for her which is 11th March 1808? This birth date works well for a marriage in May 1807, but it just seems that Sarah would only have been about 14 or even 13 years old, very, very young even for the early 1800s??? It is Caroline that my direct line goes through ... I too am not sure when Frances Molesworth Caroline Anderson was born but I do know that she was the 3rd daughter of both Thomas and Sarah. Is anyone able to help also with the possible Gibraltar connection for Sarah's birth, is there any record of this at all? Thank you so much to anyone who can help me at all ... Rachel

I realize that there has been a long interval since I last posted on this subject -- in 2004 but did not get a response. I have much information and valid source references on the siblings of John P. Biddle. I would be glad to exchange information.

Looking for someone familiar with a Skeeles-Biddle Funeral parlor in Chicago, ca. 1930. They were located on E. 63rd St, later moved to another location, but seem to have gone out of business by 1945. My grand uncle worked at the 63rd st location in 1930, was listed as a partner. There may have been a Rockefeller associated with the firm, as well. His name was Edward Hammond Vance, born in Ohio to a family of Presbyterian ministers. His trail runs cold with the 1930 census.

I think we have the same desendants, my Aunt found our "Biddle" family bible and through research I have found a link to William H. Biddle born July 13, 1841, son of William & Hannah, older sister Hester A. born Feb 13, 1834. I have a few other I have found as well.

Parrents: William & Hannah Biddle(Bedwell)
Children:
Hester A Biddle - Feb 13, 1834 - Mar 13, 1916
Jonathan S Biddle - Jan 23, 1837
William H Biddle - Jan 13, 1841
Mary Biddle - Oct 13, 1843
Hannah E Biddle - Oct 4, 1846 -1848

It looks like "Hester A" married a "Foraker" and she held the bible I think she married Joseph but Ancestry sees a William.
Children:
Ida - 1870
Cora - Feb 8, 1873
Joseph - Jun 6,1876

Now this would come so close the the hand written note from my grandmother Ione, but still not seeing a link between these Biddle's and and Wilbur O. Biddle - 1861, my great-grandfather. Also on a note, it looks like between 1850 & 1860 we changed our name from Bedwell to Biddle, although there is no mention in the bible of this name.

John Wesley Biddle Bible

Today in an antique shop in Selma NC, I came across a family bible of John Wesley Biddle and wife Ann. In a locked case it had a note outside giving the owner of the bible and the date of marriage of John and Ann, 1869. It also listed three sons, Richard 1869, Thomas 1871 and William 1875. It is in beautiful shape and the price is $1100. It was printed in 1777. I picked up the card for the Antique shope incase someone wants the information. I have no idea if anything else is listed in the bible or not as it was locked up in a glass case.
Linda Oliver
NCSewLady@aol.com

My name is William Shepard. F.W. Dize who used to post on here is my great aunt. Ezra Roy Shepard had twin sisters named Mamie and Minnie. Mamie was my great grandmother. Which I believe is F. Dize's mother. Mamie's daughter Donna had my mother, Jana L. Jones. Jana also married a Shepard. His name is Michael L. Shepard, son of Vernon. I am trying to get as much on the Shepard history as I can as I am a Shepard on both sides. Please e-mail me at gotstuk@hotmail.com
William Joseph (Joey) Shepard
