Both of Homer's parents are in the same Union Cemetery (see Find a Grave).

The are Mary A Unknown 1839 - Aug. 30, 1921 and Charles C. Bidwell 1828 - 1915.

They are probably also in Oregon but I didn't check. It might even be possible to find Charles in the 1850 census as he would possibly still be with his parents.

Get back to me personally if you want me to see what I can find. I also own both Bidwell sets of books.
Gretchen
Email: dddarwin@aol.com

According to the Census of 1900. Homer C. Bidwell was in Union County, Oregon. He was born January 1872 in Wisconsin. Father b. New York, mother b. Pennsylvania.

Wife was Rachel. They were married circa 1898. No children listed. Rachel Unknown was b. August 1873 in Iowa. Her father was born Ohio and her mother b. Virginia.

Herman and family are also in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 Census.

If you go to "Find A Grave" and ask for Bidwell in Oregon there are 59 listings including Homer d. June 24, 1931 and is buried in Union Cemetery in Union County, Oregon. His wife Rachel is also buried in that cemetery as probably some of his children. There are 8 Bidwells buried in that particular cemetery.

Hope this helps. If you need me to see if I can find who his parents were (1880 Census) let me know.
Gretchen

Re: Clarissa Bidwell

Lisa,
I checked both the Bidwell Volume I book and the latest Bidwell books (two) that just came out in 2011.

Clarissa is in both books. She was the daughter of George C. Bidwell and Lucinda Patrick (Volume 1) so the earlier Bidwell lines would be in there. Volume I states b. 1818 d. 1867. Her line was not continued in Volume I.

The new Bidwell books - She is in there and it states b. 1818 d. 1857. She married Hiram L. Bennett bet. 1835 & 1840 and they show 7 Children. Don't know if any of the children are continued with further information or not.
Her line was:
John; John; John; Joseph; Rudolphus; George C.

She was the only sibling b. in Connecticut. She had 9 known siblings all born Warren County, New York.

If you are interested in the new books you might contact Faith and see if there are still some available.. I think they were $75 including shipping for both volumes.

If you need her email address or have a question please feel free to contact me.
Gretchen
Email: dddarwin@aol.com

hi Ms. Schureman -- I looked up Clarissa Bidwell in the new edition of the Bidwell Family History (just published) and according to it, what you found about Clarissa is essentially correct. Her parents are as you say, George C. and Lucinda Patrick, and she had nine siblings, of whom George Washington and Joseph Ofket were two. Unfortunately, there is nothing more written about Clarissa, other than she was born in E.Hartford, CT ca 1819, and died in Thetford, MI, 7 April 1857. I'm sorry I can't provide any more information. Possibly some of the present Michigan Bidwells might be able to do more.
Dick Bidwell

Clarissa Bidwell

I'm descended from Clarissa Bidwell b. 1818-19, CT, d. 1857, Thetford, Genesee Co., MI, mar. 1839-40 Hiram L. Bennett, Warren Co., NY. I suspect that she's the daughter of George C. Bidwell & Lucinda Patrick as they have a daughter of the right age though with the wrong death date and no marriage particulars. Joseph Ofket Bidwell & George Washington Bidwell lived in Thetford with their parents the same time that Clarissa & Hiram Bennett did. Joseph didn't leave until the 1890s. Does anyone have an oral or written history pertaining to Clarissa. I'm trying to verify her parentage. Her gravestone states she's the daughter of G. & L. Bidwell. Hope someone can help with my brick wall. I have checked the Bidwell Family History by Joan Bidwell. Thanks in advance

Lisa Schureman

David Bidwell here, ask me anything you'd like! I didn't exactly SERVE in the revolutionary war, but my time machine did accidently land me me in the middle of a battlefield. I was briefly taken as a prisoner by British soldiers, but they released me after I impressed them with an iPhone.

~David Bidwell (Born 1987; Hartford, CT)

In 1900 census, it was noted that Frederick "H3"(?the third?). Bidwell (dob Feb 1846) and his wife Margaret I.(dob Sep 1847) , were kind enough to take in my father's mother, Jennie C.(Carswell) Brown(dob Nov 1884) who they described as their neice.
My father had a letter written to Bidwell by a Rev. Elisha Gifford. Gifford was living at 136 Howe Street in New Haven, Connecticut.
I do not think that Frederick and his wife had any children. I think I found them in the 1910 census living in Middlebury, Vermont with (I assume) his father, Ledawick (Frederick?) Bidwell, 100 years old!
Does anyone have connections to any of these people. I would be happy to share Gifford's letter. (It's very interesting, written in 1916 and describes his ancestors experiences settling in New York/Indians/ etc.; purchase of land, final payment made in 1811.

Janet,
Am inserting the information that I sent you on David Bidwell's ancestors so that someone could find it in the future in case they are looking.

The information was taken from the Bidwell book published in 1983.
Gretchen

HOPE I DIDN'T MAKE ANY TYPOS!!

NOTE: There is other information in the book BUT my eyesight is not that good anymore............also the book has lots of stories, obits, wills, pictures, etc.

2ND NOTE......seems to be confusion about the David Bidwell buried in Stillwell Cemetery in Saratoga County, New York.....gives birth date for David Sr., 1687 and death date for David Jr., 1794 This would have made him 107 years old (grin).
Dear Unknown.............
I really hate trying to do this type of thing thru a Message Board as it gets too complicated.

The Volume 1 of the Bidwell Book is over 1000 pages and was published in 1983. The second volume is probably going to be published in 2011 hopefully.

Again, email me directly and tell me what you know about your wife's Bidwell family i.e. Parents, grandparents, etc and I will see what is in the book. Maiden names of the females appreciated as they would be easier to find hopefully.
Gretchen
dddarwin@aol.com

You didn't give an approximate birthdate or any other information so.......

There are 3 Benson Bidwell's in Volume 1 of the Bidwells. Only theh first one seems to have been from Connecticut.

1. Benson Bidwell 1825 - 1904 m. Mary Belden and had 3 sons: Benjamin, William and Charles - Since Benson was in the book (Pages 143, 312 & 328) his parent and other ancestors would also be there. Probably some of his descendents would also be listed.

2. Benson Morgan Bidwell 1850 - ? - Probably New York

3. Benson Andrew Bidwell - 1859-1949 - Ohio/Indiana/Kansas.

If you think the first one is he please email me directly at dddarwin@aol.com and tell me what information you would like on him and his family.
Gretchen

The Waukesha Freeman, Wisconsin, Apr 16, 1903

KILLED BY FALLING FROM CAR

At Bismarck, South Dakota, (should be North Dakota) on April 8th, 1903, occurred the tragic death of Edwin Bidwell, a young man aged 25 years, whose former home was in our city. While returning on a crowded car, a mile out from Bismarck, where a jolly company had been to see and hear President Roosevelt, he was accidently thrown from the platform of the fast moving train. He struck on the back of his head and was instantly killed. Masonic services were held at Bismark and the remains, accompanied by Mr. G. E. Mann of Red Wing, Minn., Edwin's step father, reached here Saturday morning. Short funeral services were held at Prairie Home Cemetery. Rev. W. A. Mckillop officiating. Deceased was a relative of Mrs. G. F. H. Barber, Mr. George and Clara Blackwell, Mrs. E. Tyler and was the grandson of Mrs. M. Bidwell; he also leaves in Dakota his uncles, Charles and Ed. Blackwell and an aunt, Mrs. James Whitcher, with whom he had made his home for many years, to deeply mourn his untimely death.

NOT RELATED

E.
I'm one of three grandsons of Abel Trood and Alpha Hafer Bidwell. My wife chanced upon your discussion while searching for information on my grandfather's World War II service. Alpha died in September 1963, I believe, or possibly September 1964. Her earlier hospitalization in Colorado was probably for tuberculosis. I remember Uncle Renwick and Aunt Jane. I know very little about my grandmother except that she had several sisters, one of whom was supposedly either the first female dentist in Pennsylvania or the first woman to graduate from a particular dental school in Pennsylvania. My grandmother came from Bellefonte PA near State College and lived in a house that backed on a trout stream that runs through the town. I believe my grandfather also came from Bellefonte but spent time with an uncle in nearby Jersey Shore. I would be delighted to receive any more information on my grandparents and their families. I do have the book of Bidwell and a number of (Bidwell) genealogical charts that Martha Minder did for my father.

I'm not sure what info we can offer, but go ahead and ask. Able Trood Bidwell was my husband Bob's grandfather. I know he had a sister, Martha who lived in Michigan. I happened upon this site when we were looking up something about his WWII service.

Hello, I have no Bidwell ancestry. Years ago I ran across a book in a used bookstore, purchased it and shipped it to the first person who replied to my original post. The person who responded was researching their Bidwell family and if I remember correctly, lived in Wisconsin.

Bidwell Family History, 1587-1982, Volume 1 was "Compiled" by Joan J. Bidwell and was published in 1983. The only way you can find a copy is possibly thru an on-line book dealer such as ABE Books or one of the other used book dealers.

Volume I was almost 1,100 pages and if I remember correctly the cost at that time was $50 including postage.

Volume II has, to my knowledge, not been published as of yet as the Bidwell Family Association is trying to raise the money to have it publshed.

Volume II will not include data that was in Volume I except in the case of corrections that were made after it was published. Have no idea how many pages it might contain nor if the cost has been determined as of yet.

You might go to their website..... http://bidwell.org/ and email one of the officers for more updated information. To join the Bidwell Association is $20 per year or $200 for life membership.

That includes 3 or 4 newsletters each year and they keep you updated on any family news and where the Reunions are to be held each year.

If I can answer any questions please feel free to email me directly.
Gretchen
Email: Dddarwin@aol.com
