Hi Diane,

If it is the same Thomas Frederick Bigg born in 1833 Marylebone, London. He was married to Janet Emma Johnstone. He was an Anglican clergyman throughout England. He was my GGgrandfather. I'm not sure how many kids he had but I know there was my Ggrandfather Frederick Johnstone, Margaret (Peg), Maria, Lionel, Henry Reginald, Olive, Evelyn. Thomas's mother was Sarah. On the 1841 London Census she appears with Sarah 18, William 8, Thomas 6, Mary Ann 4, & Martha 2. I know that this leg of the family has a lot of Anglican clergy. There is a plaque at the church in Six Penny Handley dedicated to Thomas.

Hi

I think we may be related as well. My GGGrandfather was Thomas Frederick Bigg. He was born 17 May 1838, Marylebone, London & died 14 Apr 1929, Canterbury, England. He was an Anglican clergyman. He went to school at Cambridge. His father, according to 1871 census, was Thomas of Clapham, Surrey. I know his mother's name was Sarah according to 1841 Census. He also had a sister Sarah, Bros Thomas & William, & sisters Mary Ann & Martha. I also know that the family was wealthy & there were a lot of Anglican clergymen in the family. His uncle was a famous Anglican missionary, I think also a Thomas. That is the only info that I have on him. Sarah was 36 in 1841. (BTW, if my Thomas IS Sarah Elden's husband then I have seen info on them on family tree sites)

Would love to make a connection to my Thomas somehow as this educated family is the missing link in my family tree.

My GGrandfather, Frederick Johnstone Bigg, immigrated to Canada when he was young so the family history kind of died there.

My grandfather, FJ Bigg, Jr saw a lot of my GAunts & Uncles: Peg, Evelyn, etc during WWII but we do not have much info on their Granparents or even their parents. My GGgrandmother was Janet Emma Johnstone. Her family, BTW, has been quite easy to trace because they were famous medical Drs. & were Scottish lairds.

Any help you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

Hi, I think I just found a connection to the bigg family of sheerness/sheppey.

On my fathers line,

Delia Smith - b 1842 sheerness m James Mills b 1832 and had 3 sons, George H Mills,James Mills and John Mills.

James Mills died in about 1874 and Delia re-married in 1874 to a James Bigg in Bethnal Green.
They were living in poplar on the 1881 census. By this time James Bigg must have passed away.

Delia Bigg b 1842 in sheerness - Head,
George H Bigg b 1864 in sheerness - Son,
James Bigg b 1871 in poplar - Son,
John H Bigg b 1866 in sheerness - Son,
Sarah Bigg b 1880 in millwall - Daughter.

I assume the 3 sons are actually children of James Mills.

Anyway, If any of this info is good for you let me know.
Thanks,
Warren.

Hi Frank,
i'm sure your right we must all be related somewhere along the line, the problem is finding that missing link.
My GGGGrandfather is a William Bigg but it appears there are quite a lot of them
Have you managed to locate your GGGrandfather on any censuses, if you have it should hopefully tell you where he was born, this is however dependant on whether he himself knew, that may be a starting point, alternatively you should try and look at the parish records for where he was married they should be able to tell you if he was also born there.
I have been using the website www.Genesconnected.co.uk to put my family tree online, there is loads of Bigg's registered on there, you should take a look maybe you will find the answer you're looking for. It is free to search and costs £7.50 a year to register and use all the facilities so may be worth a shot.
Good luck with your search, bye for now
Susan

Hi Frank,
i am attempting to trace the bigg family tree at the moment, currently back as far as about 1840 i think with my 3 x great grandfather William Bigg. My side of the family definately originate from kent as i believe the surname Bigg actually does. In fact my 2 x great grandfather Charles Skinner Bigg was actually a stonemason who worked on Canterbury Cathedral.
Susan

The only one of my dads brothers I know is Teddy, but there are several more.
Hi Alison, Good to see other Bigg members doing this research! Nothing familier at this moment but My family does have connections with London so it is possible that we are connected! The BIGG family (with no s) is a lot smaller than most families! My GG grandfather was probably from London though I am having a hard time to trace him! Born Thomas Bigg about 1800. Was a Calico printer in Manchester in the mid 1800s Cencus 1841 he died in 1843. Maried Sarah Elden in London at Saint Martin in the Fields (Trafalgar Square)
Good luck
Keep in touch
Frank

Hi Susan,
Thanks for getting in touch with me! Yes I believe the Bigg name is from Kent too, Lots of Biggs but the Bigg family is not easy to trace, not my side I have got back to about 1832 as a definite but before that I am not having much luck! I have come across the William Bigg line a number of times but I am stuck on my GGGrandfather Thomas Bigg, I just dont know how to find out where he was born! He was married in Saint Martin-in-the-Fields London and the marriage banns state he is of that parish so he may be a Londoner though he live all his married life up in Manchester he was a Calico Printer and Manchester was the place to be then right in the heart of the Industrial Revolution! They Had money and all the children were educated and went to University.
I will look out for your line as I am sure we must have a connection!
All for now , Frank

Hi Robert,
Congrats on starting this much-needed project. I have only recently started tracing my gt-grandmother Sarah BIGGS 1811-1867 born Stevenage who married Samuel KIDDLE there in 1837. From the IGI the surname appears in Stevenage ca 1560, and I think I can trace back to a Stephen BIGG who must have been born ca1750, but where? Would like to contact anyone tracing the name in Stevenage.

Phil Sherwood

Re: Bigg Family Kent

I also have a connection to a Bigg or Biggs family from Kent. My g-g-g-grandmother was Caroline BIGG or BIGGS (depending on which primary source you look at!). She had two sisters that I know of: Frances and Sarah Ann. I believe Caroline was born around 1830.
THe family as below is shown in 1841 census for Essex, at West Ham where they had a large market garden:
William BIGG born Minster in Sheppey, Kent
Lydia BIGG born Lydd, Kent
and the three girls as above, all born in Eastchurch, Sheppey, Kent

In 1861 William and Lydia still had the same farm; Caroline had a daughter out of wedlock and was living with her daughter and sister, Sarah Ann WEST, along with Sarah's two children (Lydia and William), in Stepney. Frances was married to Samuel COOPER and was also living in Stepney. Eventually Caroline married a fellow called Thomas COOPER - I believe he was some relation of Frances's Samuel COOPER but haven't proven that as yet.

Sarah Ann is interesting in that her children were born here in Australia. I did some research and found that she married William WEST in 1853, in Victoria, Australia, and that in 1854 they had their daughter Lydia in Newcastle, New South Wales. William junior was born in 1857, also in Newcastle, and after that I think their father died, and Sarah took the children back to England before 1861, where she appears on the census.

Last week a cousin of mine in the UK had her brother visit Eastchurch in Kent, where he took some photos of the church, and also of a gravestone of Richard BIGG who we believe was a brother to William BIGG. I'm attaching the gravestone photo in case it's of interest to anyone.

If any of this sounds familiar please get back to me! I've only just started on this BIGG trail, and am looking forward to the chase.

Best regards

Prue McKay
Canberra, Australia

Dear Caroline,

We are related: like this I think.

Charles Gilbert Wood is the older brother of my GGGGrandmother Ada Louisa Wood. She was the youngest daughter of Francis William Wood and Amelia A.M.I have traced the family back to Francis William Wood's parents: Samuel Turner Wood and Maria Woodley Bigg. But no further either.

The eldest son Francis Edward was born in Hungary in 1846 and the eldest daughter Amelia was born in Prussia in 1849 but the other children: Maria E, Henry, Charles and Ada are all born in England.

Francis William Wood was a jeweller in the 1851 census, but what were they up to in Europe?

Any ideas?

Amelia A.M. re-marries a Richard Tarraway and are living in Jersey in 1861 and then move to Cardiganshire in the 1871 census. No idea why. I've not heard of the link between Phillipp's of Aberglasney?

Francis Edward the eldest didn't move to Wales.

Charles Gilbert's sister, Ada marries Joshua Harries and had 10 children. One being Joshua Harries my Great Grandad. His son also called Joshua was given the middle name Wood! He was my Grandad! So the Wood name continued until his death.

I don't suppose you have any photographs of Charles Gilbert. I don't have any I'm afraid of this side of my family.

I live near Aberystwyth, where are you?

The younger brother of my Grandad is still alive and lives in Cwrtnewydd. He remembers his Mamgu and Dadcu (Ada and Joshua Harries).

Look forward to your reply.

PS. had a post from a relative of Ada and Charles's older brother Francis Edward who is related to us in the same way!!!

Rhian

This is the post

Board : Boards > Localities > United Kingdom and Ireland > England >
London > London
Subject : Re: Samuel Turner WOOD + Francis William Wood Jeweller
Hi Frank
I was wondering if you happen to be related to the following Bigg's: EW Biggs born 19/09/1846, Florence Bigg 17/09/?, Alice Daisy Bigg 13/03/1891 and William Bigg 25/11/1809.
From what I have found so far, they mainly came from Canterbury, Kent.
Any help you can provide would be really helpful.
Thanks, Rachael
