I am amazed about the Stella Hall connection as I grew up in Summerhill, which was originally part of the Stella Hall Estate.

I exchanged a few e-mails with Roy Pruddah. He believed that the Pruddah & Prudhoe surnames are unrelated, whereas I believe that Pruddah is just a derivative of Prudhoe. I've traced his ancestry back to a marriage of a Robert Prudoe at Corbridge in 1690. As he was living at Aydon and there were other Prudhoe families living around Welton just a few miles away so it is a fair bet they were related.

Not conviced by the Radcliffe story. There were all sorts of Jacobite stories in our side of the family too but I've found nothing in them. Interestingly the family story that relatives owned Stella Hall where the Blaydon Races were run looks like it is true. William & Eleanor's granddaughter Mary Prudhoe married George Cowan in 1770 and they were the grandparents of the Victorian MP Joseph Cowan who owned Stella Hall. Not found anyone else remotely famous.

Hi John,
This may be nothing but it suggests that the name Prudhoe may have actually been Radcliffe originally.
Thanks. I bought a CD of the Ryton records.

I don't believe William Prudhoe came from Co. Durham. I looked at the 1666 Hearth Tax records for Co. Durham and the only Prudhoe family in the county were at Cambois near Blyth (which was an isolated part of Co. Durham at the time). I'll have to find the time to see what is in the Northumberland records which I believe have been published recently.

Hi John,
I think William and Ellenor were not born in Ryton. I'm looking at Winlaton now as I've found this: (scroll down the page about 1 1/2 inches and under a small heading '170a' we find
Sept 1 Wni Pruddow and Ellenor Forster, Winlaton

http://www.archive.org/stream/publications00schogoog/publica...

Thanks for the link.

It seems to be just speculation that links William Prudhoe to George Prudhoe born at Ryton Woodside in 1621 via an unknown link.

I've just got no evidence that that is the link rather than links to Stamfordham or Wylam or even Newcastle or Tynemouth that I could also speculate about.

I'm afraid I can't help much as I only have a record of the dates and can't quite remember how I got them - I no longer subscribe to ancestry.com. I also have a date of William's father's birth at 1645 but no name.

Wendy

I'd be interested in anything you have on William Prudhoe, especially on his birth. I've not been able to trace him back any further than the marriage in 1702, although there's a candidate baptised in 1682/3 at Stamfordham I've nothing to positively indicate a link.

Hello
My name is Robert Edward Biggins III. My father's name is Robert Edward Biggins JR and my uncle (who I never met) is Guy Biggins. My grandfather's name was Robert Edward Biggins SR and was in the Army a very long time ago. He died in 1982 I think. My father told me that he had a sister when he was a child, but something happened, and then she went missing. He's been looking for her for a very long time. Im thinking that this is you. My father is originally from San Francisco. I made contact with my grandmother (your mother). She lives in Ohio. I cant remember her last name, but apparently its very famous where she lives. Every year they have a family reunion. Please give me a call or text message me at 573-528-9208. I noticed this post was setup in 2000, I hope you're still checking it even 11 years later. I hope to hear from you soon. If you cant call me, email me at robert.biggins@hotmail.com Take care.

Your nephew,

Robert

Malcolm,
It's a while since we last communicated on BIGGINS families, but I wanted to clarify the McCABE/CURRIE observation you have made. Mary CURRIE who died at the Holmes Colliery is believed to be the wife of Hugh McCABE. From what I can determine, they had two children: Mary McCABE who married John BIGGINS (my GGGrandfather) and Hugh McCABE who married Janet GRAHAM. I hope this clarifies things.
Kieran Biggins.
Hi Michelle

8 months on and I've finally found time to return my search for "Biggins" roots. The name Currie is, supposedly, the maiden name of my paternal GGGMother and so any connection between Biggins and Currie is music to my ears. Following on from your post including the 1851 Census result for John & Mary Biggins and "mother-in-law" Mary Currie I dug around a bit and ( Maybe you already know ) I found a death of a Mary Currie in Galston - 16th January 1863 at Holmes(?) Colliery. She is 70, but that must be approximate, because there is no record of parents; but the interesting item of information is that the death was registered by her son - HUGH McCABE!!!!!!!! It doesn't help me at all - but it confirms your McCabe theory.

I still think there is a connection somewhere ( Cootehill and Clones, where I think my Biggins's originate, are only a stone's throw apart ) so the search goes on - If you would like a scanned copy of the death of Mary please let me know.

Malcolm

Biggins family kilt.

Body of Message:

Hi..

My grandads name was Thomas Biggins and he was from Glasgow.. Years ago he passed away and left the familys kilt to my family. However, the kilt was stolen, After his passing I joined a pipeband where the spirit of him will live on, I was wondering if anyone knows what tartan the Biggins family kilt is as at the time the kilt was last saw, I wasn't of age to remember and I would love to be able to honour him whilst wearing his tartan, if anyone could point me in the right direction, I would apreciate greatly.

Thankyou

Hi Malcolm,

I think I added the ? in my notes as I expected her surname to be McCABE. From my notes, the info that I have is Mary CURRIE, mother-in-law, widow, aged 60, born Monaghan, living with the family of John BIGGINS and Mary BIGGINS (probably nee McCABE).

The parents of John BIGGINS (who married Mary McCABE) and James BIGGINS (who married Agnes WOODS) may be James BIGGINS (or BEGIN) and Mary KELLY. They may have been from Cootehill, Drumgoon, which was in County Monaghan and is now in County Cavan. I think that other researchers gave me this info.

I'm afraid that I don't have any info or records directly from Ireland. The Irish Times has info on surnames of County Monaghan: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/magazine/articles/ir_mona...
It shows that some surnames were anglicized in Scotland and gives the original celtic versions, e.g. WOODS may originally have been MacENHILL or MacCONCHOILLE.

Michelle

Hi Diane,

I think this is the same John BIGGINS that is still living with his mother on the 1871 census in Galston and the 1881 census at 9 Blair Street, Galston. I don't know what happened to him after that.

The brother, James BIGGINS, who married Agnes WOODS, may be this entry on the 1841 census for Renfrewshire listed at www.freecen.org.uk:-

James BIGGER, 25, coal-miner, born Ireland
Ann WOODS, 22, born Renfrewshire
Agness BIGGER, 2, born Renfrewshire
Address: Fishers Row, Abbey, Paisley

John and James BIGGINS that were neighbours in Hoodston Bridge, Galston, Ayrshire on the 1851 census may also have had another brother, Philip BIGGINS. He married Mary STRAWBRIDGE and this family appear on the 1861 census in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire:-

Philip BIGGINS, aged 45, born Ireland, coal-miner
Mary BIGGINS, aged 40, born Ireland
Rose BIGGINS, aged 20, born Paisley
Mary BIGGINS, aged 16, born Barony, Glasgow

This Philip BIGGINS died in 1870 in Old Monkland and his wife died in 1880 at the Old Monkland Poorhouse.

Someone told me that the parents of these three brothers were James BIGGINS and Mary KELLY.

Please note also that although County Monaghan appears as a place of birth on some of these census returns, the actual location may now be in County Cavan in Ireland as the boundaries of the registration district may have changed.

Michelle

Hi Michelle

I know that it's years since I had anything to add to the Biggins thread - but couldn't help but notice your 1851 Census for Galston which included Mary Currie(?).

My Biggins ancesters only came to Glasgow in the mid to late 1860's but William & Michael were sons of Bernard Biggins & Catherine Currie, born, I now think, in or around Clones in Co. Monaghan. ( William was married in Newton Butler, just over the border in Co. Fermanagh ). So I have a link, possibly, to the name Currie and to Monaghan - thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Malcolm

Hello Michelle,

I descend from Roseanna BIGGINS who married Edward ROONEY. I've been trying to figure out what happened with her younger brother, John BIGGINS (age 9 on 1861 census in Galston). All I've found so far is his birthdate, 26 Jan. 1852 in Galston. Just hoping someone could point me in the right direction toward more information on him.

John and James BIGGINS, next-door-neighbors on the 1851 census, appear to be brothers. Their death registrations both list the same names for their parents. I didn't realize James BIGGINS and Agnes had married in Paisley. That info. might help me find them on the 1841 census! Thank you.

Sincerely, Diane

Hi all,

I don't have much more info than I have already posted about this couple:-

The 1841 census for Barrhead, Renfrewshire (see www.freecen.org.uk) shows a Roseanna BIGGINS, aged 16, b. Ireland, occupation: cotton-spinner, living with the QUINN family at 10 Barrhead Village. There is also a John RAFFERTY, aged 20, b. Ireland, occupation: coal-miner, living with the DONNELLY family in Barrhead Village.

Roseanna BIGGINS married John RAFFERTY on 24/06/1842 in Neilston (M115725 on the IGI).

The family appear on the 1851 census for Rutherglen (Vol 654 ED 21 p.17) with their children: Elizabeth (aged 8), Mary (aged 6), John (aged 11 months). Rosann BIGGINS is listed aged 24 and John RAFFERY aged 36, both born in Ireland. He was working as a collier. There is also a Patrick RAFFERTY, aged 39, miner, born Ireland and his wife Catherine, aged 39, born Ireland, also living at the same address.

The family appear on the 1861 census for Rutherglen living at 98 Main Street (Vol. 654 ED 10 p.4) The daughters are working as weavers.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about the RAFFERTY family ancestry, other than they were from Ireland.

Kind regards,

Michelle

Re: Biggins Research Group

I am one of the members of Daniela Moneta's Biggins research group. In 2008, Daniela started the project and asked me to have my DNA tested. I was skeptical because of the cost and doubtful that I would learn anything, but my wife Marilyn encouraged me to do it. Now, I really feel Irish--I match up closely with people named Biggins, Beaghen, Beggan, Bigham, and Little (beag is Irish for little and John Little's father was nicknamed "Jimmy Beggins"). And, I match up with Sean Biggins, a descendant of the Biggins family across the road from my great great grandfather Patrick Biggins.

I also saw that I matched up with people named McMahon, Carroll, McKenna, McDonald, and McDaniel. Eventually I learned that ancient histories claim that these names are descended from the Three Collas, brothers who established the ancient kingdom of Oriel in Northern Ireland in the 4th century.

See my page ion Biggins/Beggan Irish Roots at: http://www.peterspioneers.com/biggins.htm

And see my page on DNA of the Three Collas at: http://www.peterspioneers.com/colla.htm

Peter Biggins
Darien, Connecticut, USA

Biggins Research Group

Hello Biggins Researchers,

We have a group of genealogists researching their Biggins ancestors that have taken a DNA test or two to help them with their research. Here is our website www.familytreedna.com/public/Biggins. From there, click on the links on the left hand side called Y-DNA Results or mtDNA Results to see who are the most distant ancestors that our project members are working on.

I am the volunteer project administrator for this website and I do not work for Family Tree DNA. I have used DNA testing in my own research and am an enthusiast. If you have any questions about how DNA testing can help you in your research or want to share how it has helped you, please post your responses.

One reason for posting this message is that the more people who join our project the better chance we have of finding a genetic match and possibly advancing our research. It is fortunate to find someone who matches you who has researched their ancestor back more generations than you. Another reason for this message is that Family Tree DNA is having a summer sale of $40 off that ends on June 25.

Here is my Biggins ancestor that I am research. I descend from Eleanor Biggins born 1798 in Middlesex, England and died in 1859 in Surrey, England. She married Joseph Hewitt in London in 1821. He was born 8 Jun 1789 in Woking, Surrey, England. His parents were Henry Hewitt and Sarah Farr. I descend from their son, William Joseph Hewitt born in 1834 and immigrated to American as a young man. He settled in Illinois, joined the Civil War, married and moved to Missouri. I have made several trips to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City to do research on my Biggins and Hewitt lines but it is a tough one. I would love to hear from anyone researching this line.

Good luck in your research,

Daniela Moneta
Phoenix, Arizona
Trish,
Given that you have John Biggins's date of birth and date of death, you can order images of both these certificates through the Scotlandspeople website. The is a small charge to access the site but for sure his parents will be listed on either or both. Once you know this, I will probably be able to help, as I have compiled information on many BIGGINS families from Scotland and Ireland. There is a branch from Eastwood, Glasgow where (I believe) your John was born. I do know that he married Mary Richardson in Provan, Glasgow in 1941 and this registration cert. will also be available from the same site and should list both their parents. His birth cert. may also show his parents wedding date and place...Hope this helps....Kieran Biggins.

Daniela,

The IGI has the marriage of Elinor Biggins, born about 1799, & Joseph Hewitt in 1821. It looks as if the marriage took place at St. George's , Hanover Square, Westminster, London. St. George's is a Church of England church and would have been in the county of Middlesex. If Eleanor was baptised there, you may be able to get the details from their archives http://www.stgeorgeshanoversquare.org/Churcharchives.htm

Otherwise, try Rootschat's Middlesex board http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,24.0.html

Good Luck

Mary

Hi Mary,

What a good idea to find her baptismal record. Can you tell me how I might go about finding it? I have her approximate year of birth. Would I write to the Middlesex parish office or is there a centralized location for records from the 1790s?

Thank you, you are a great help,

Daniela
