nancy ann jackson

Nancy or Nance Ann was born to James Biggs & Rebecca Simms in Clay County, ky approx 1901-1904. Rebecca left Jim and took their two daughters, Nance Ann & Ella Mae and put them up for adoption. They somehow connected with their Ky family as adults. Nance Ann would be the half-sister of my father John S. Biggs. She visited our home in Middletown, OH in 1956. I know that her married name was Jackson and she had one adopted son. Last know residence was Detroit, MI. Any info would be appreciated.
HI RALPH SAW YOUR POST. I HAVE BEEN DOING WORK ON THIS LINE, ELIJAH SR ETAL.
I CANNOT PROVE MY THEORY, BUT I BELIEVE ELIJAH SR WAS S/O JOHN BIGGS SR. JOHN SR LIVED IN NASH CO NC AT THE TIME ELIJAH SR WAS DRAFTED INTO RW FROM NASH CO, ALSO JOHN JR AND SOPHIA. [THAT PART I CAN PROVE]
BY 1820, WHEN ELIJAH IS IN SIMPSON CO KY, JOHN SR AND FAMILY ARE IN SUMNER AND ROBERTSON CO TN. JOHN SR AND JR BOUGHT LAND ON RED RIVER, IN THE TWO COUNTIES IN 1804. RED RIVER RUNS TO OR FROM SIMPSON CO KY, I BELIEVE.
JOHN SR, I BELIEVE, IS NOT LISTED IN SUMNER CENSUS 1820, BUT IS THE OLDER COUPLE AT DAVID BIGGS'S HOME. THE JOHN LISTED MUST BE JOHN JR, WHO APPEARS TO HAVE DIED BEFORE 1830.
BY 1830 JOHN SR AND OTHERS ARE IN LINCOLN CO TN, INCLUDING ABRAHAM MARTIN, WHO m MOURNING BIGGS b 1792 EDGECOMBE CO NC. IN 1792 JOHN SR LIVED ON SAPPONY CREEK IN NASH CO VERY NEAR THE EDGECOMBE LINE.
IN THE WILL OF FRANCIS SOWARD, PROVEN 1777 EDENTON, CHOWAN CO NC HE NAMES ONE DAUGHTER WILLIANE BIGGS. I THINK SHE WAS LIKELY JOHN SR'S FIRST WIFE AND MOTHER OF ELIJAH SR, JOHN JR, AND SOPHIA. MOURNING'S PARENTS MAY HAVE BEEN JOHN SR AND HIS SECOND WIFE [NAME UNK] OR SHE COULD HAVE BEEN D/O JOHN JR, HE BEING b NEAR THE SAME TIME AS ELIJAH.
I WENT TO NC AND STOPPED AT EVERY COURT HOUSE IN N.E. NC BUT COULD FIND NO EVIDENCE OF JOHN SR EVER BEING THERE.
IT IS MY BELIEF THAT JOHN SR IS THE ELDEST SON OF JAMES BIGGS d 1767/8 CURRITUCK CO NC, THOUGH SOME WOULD ARGUE WITH ME.
I HAVE OTHER CLUES THAT LEAD ME DOWN THIS ROAD, OF OTHER FAMILY CONNECTIONS, AND AM LOOKING FOR SOME PROOF.
ANYONE INTERESTED CAN CONTACT ME AT biggsidahofalls@aol.com
DAN BIGGS

Yes, Please use my e-mail address as given - rabiggs4243@sbcglobal.net - Have really tore the Biggs' lineage apart! I think it has been failed to Document in the past. What I have, I use Documentation, then throw in the speculation of others. I've tried to correct most of it, but no one wants to follow it. Up to you, if you want to contact me. Thank You, Ralph Biggs

I don't know about the Biggs in Slaton,TX.My grandfather was James William Biggs who was born and lived his entire life in Stephenville, TX. His siblings were Brunette, John, Robert, Alba,Minnie, Tom and Odis.(I think)He and his brother Robert are the only ones buried in Erath county. The rest moved away. I think that Tom, Odis and Minnie moved to Lubbock, Brunette moved to Sweetwater, John also died in Stephenville and is buried there. I never knew of Alba and don't know where she moved.

Hi Doug - I'm one of the group that Dan mentions in the following email response.

Well I (and the rest of us) have "Joseph" not "George" as the father of Samuel Biggs and his siblings. Samuel Biggs and Elizabeth Ann (Annie) Sweezey (who you mention in a previous post) are my ggg grandparents.

This is the first time I have ever seen our Joseph referred to as George, so you may well have come up with info unknown to us via another line of research (maybe his name was Joseph George or George Joseph)...

I'm anxious to hear what you have found, and compare our paths and information.

Re your reference to: "Early Loyalist Saint John" by D.G. Bell - and can't guarantee the accuracy of the Wm Biggs entry - I've transcribe this same information and that of Aaron Sweezey from this book. Also, another member of our Biggs group, Margaret, has a copy.

Looking forward to hearing from you, through Dan or otherwise
Darlene

Hello Darlene and Dan.

Thank you both for taking the time to write back.

I'm afraid that the information I have on George is quite weak and anecdotal. The more I research this, the more convinced I become that my information was erroneous. I got it from an aunt on my Logan side who got it originally from my deceased grandmother who was a Howell. I have a strong feeling that you Biggs folks are all correct, and that Joseph Biggs is my actual ancestor. It is possible that he used George as his second name, but I have no solid proof here. Family folklore has always been that my great grandfather Ananias Howell's maternal family were originally American loyalists who settled in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. I will contact my aunt and see if there is anything more definitive I can add to the topic.

In any event, it appears that I am also a descendant of William Biggs, and his true origins are of great interest to me as well. (William-->Joseph Biggs-->Mary Ann Elis Biggs-->Ananias Howell-->Margaret Howell-->James Logan-->Doug Logan).

If I come across any research that may shed light on this, I will be certain to share it.

Warmest regards,

Doug

OK Doug - but where did you get the names of the children you thought came to Canada with the father or step-father William?

Here's what I have on your family - I don't have any further generations.

Let's all put our Biggs ancestors on a map together!!!

Put your oldest ancestor (and their children if known)with some details and a different color icon (one color per known family) so we can track their migratory patterns. Who knows - maybe it will lead to something interesting!

I started with my family - Amherst/Botetourt/Giles VA Biggs (blue icon) and added the NY family (Benjamin Biggs - green icon)

The map is called "Biggs Family (and other spellings)" and is at http://maps.google.com/maps/mm?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=41.9...

Sarah Shingleton

I am not to my knowledge descended from this line. The earliest I can go back on my line is John Biggs Sr in the early 1700s. This branch was in Amherst / Rockbridge Counties VA. I'm not sure from where John came - probably either NY / PA or from coastal VA.

Sarah

Mary,

You are the only reply, sorry to say.

Yes I am still working on this line and many more.

Here is what I know of this family:
Mary born 1861 married to ? Mcdonald in 1883 and believe moved to Ohio where ? Mcdonald died. Mary returned to Hanover Township with children Jane, Anne, Alexander, William, James, Mary and Cathrine. Believe she married William Biggs 1903 per the 1910 census.

I believe that is the right William in the 1900 census - he is a widow and 2 of his children from the 1880 census with Nancy is Mary age 24 and Joseph age 20.

Depending on who is giving the information to the Census taker - there seems to be mistakes in age, empolyment, etc. I have run across age discrepancies alot, so keep looking for more info to help. Per the 1910 and 1920 census I believe you are close 1952-53.

Are you related?

Good luck in your search
Tom Durkin
Biggs and Sweezey. New Brunswick Canada.

Hello folks.

My research has brought me to a dead end with a certain George Biggs, born 1785, died 1850 in New Brunswick Canada.
I am related through his daughter Mary Elizabeth Biggs (1815 Amherst NS - 1866 Kent, New Brunswick) and her brother Samuel (1811 Amherst, NS - 1905 Pembroke, Ontario).

One family census record says that George came from England, however I do not believe it. My Logan family roots are deep in Renfrew County Ontario, and several Biggs and Sweezeys have married into the family for a couple of generations. I understand that the Biggs and Sweezey families have been interlocked since General Simcoe's Queens Rangers from New York. They were apparently evacuated together from New York and landed in Amherst Nova Scotia together. The families continued to intermarry and migrate to Upper Canada.

Does anyone have any recent information that would shed light on George Biggs true origins?

Thanks!

Doug

Thanks very much for your detailed reply Dan. It's making things a hell of a lot clearer for me. There is very little doubt in my mind that my ancestor George Biggs was one of those four children under 10 years of age with William Biggs and his bride on the evacuation ship Alexander.

As far as I can tell, the kids were likely my ancestor George, James, Joseph and UNKNOWN. It seems probable that all four children were "adopted" by William, and assumed his last name. This would certainly explain why all of the Canadian Biggs have different DNA than their US cousins.

I followed the Sweezey line from my family, and sure enough it leads right to Aaron. So the big question remains - who was this mystery widow that married William, and who was her first husband...

Thanks again for your kind assistance.

Doug

Very interesting Dan.

Something I found on the Rootsweb CAN-NB-YORK archived message board...

From "Early Loyalist Saint John" by D.G. Bell

BIGGS, Wm.
Unit 53
Ship ALEX
Family on ship (1783) - 1 male adult, 1 female adult, 4 children under 10 years old.
Family in May 1784 - 1 male adult, 1 child over 10, 2 children under 10.

I don't have the book and can't guarantee that it was quoted accurately, but it's a hint.

The connection is definitely shaping up. My ancestor George's son Samuel, married Aaron Sweezey's grand daughter Elizabeth Ann Sweezey (Elizabeth -->Benjamin-->Aaron). Also, I see the William pattern as well. One of George's sons was named George William Biggs.

Cheers

Doug
I have a letter from Jacob wrote his granddaughter.
Maryland in Georgia
Letter to Shirley Biggs from her grandfather, Jacob Moon Biggs 3-15-1916
I was certainly surprised to get a letter from you but was glad to know that you thought enough of me to write to me.
I don't think much of Billy Sunday. I wouldn't go 10 steps to hear him.
I suppose I have some relatives in Fredrick county, my great-grandfather lived on the Monocacy River. His name was Williiam Biggs. He was an English soldier. Came here to fight for the British in time of Revolution and after the war was over he said, By god this county is good enough for me and he staid here.
I have not been able to get out much this winter and am nearly blind ????is standing it good this winter.
This is about all I have to write at the present. Be a good girl and write me often.
Your old grand Dad
Jacob M. Biggs

I noticed that this was posted almost 10yrs ago so I don't know if you'll even ever receive this, but I figured it was worth a try! My last name is Kildoyle, I'm not a Biggs however Catherine Biggs was my great great grandmother. I googled her husband's name trying to find out birth and death dates. I've been trying to work on my family tree as well and seeing as how the info is spread over the entire family and the family is spread over the country, so far I've had little success! My grandfather William Kildoyle left me Catherine and Joseph's pocket watches, and my grandmother wrote a note on the bag explaining their connection to me! If you ever get this please let me know if you'd like to chat more! Thanks!

HI DOUG HANNAH BEARD m "A" WILLIAM BIGGS JAN 23 1780, AT LONG ISLAND NY. THIS WOULD MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE BOY "OVER 10" IN 1784 TO BELONG TO WM BIGGS. IT IS ALSO IMPOSSIBLE TO CONFIRM THIS IS THE SAME WILLIAM BIGGS FROM ROBESON CO NC. NEARLY ALL BIGGS FAMILIES IN THE USA HAD A WILLIAM BIGGS.
IF THE Y-DNA OF THE CANADIAN BIGGS WHO TESTED MATCHED WITH A BEARD FAMILY GROUP THAT MAY HAVE TESTED WOULD PROVE SOME INSIGHT INTO THE MYSTERY, DUE TO THE SWEEZY / BIGGS CONNECTION, BOTH WITH THE QUEEN'S RANGERS AND LATER IN NB.
IF YOU WOULD SEND ME YOUR E MAIL ADDRESS I CAN INTRODUCE YOU TO A GROUP OF CANADIAN BIGGS WHO ARE RESEARCHING THIS FAMILY. BETWEEN ALL OF THEM THEY HAVE A LOT OF INFO THAT I DONT HAVE OF THE BIGGS LIFE AFTER THEY GOT TO CANADA.
THE TWO WHO TESTED, I THINK LIVE IN ONT. AND THEY DONT MATCH MY TEST.
I ALSO NEED TO LOOK AT WHEN THE SIEGE OF PHILADELPHIA WAS CARRIED OUT BECAUSE I BELIEVE WILLIAM AND ARRON WERE IN THAT BATTLE. PRETTY SURE OUR ROBESON CO NC WM BIGGS WAS THE ONE THERE. DAN biggsidahofalls@aol.com
"A"

HI DOUG THANK YOU FOR THE INFO. I ONLY KNEW OF JOSEPH AND JAMES BEING TRANSPORTED TO CAN. DIDNT KNOW OF THE OTHER TWO. WE HAD CONNECTED WILLIAM TO THE NAMING PATTERN, WM'S FATHER WAS JAMES AND HIS BROTHER IN LAW WAS JOSEPH MERCER. BUT AFTER SOME THOUGHT ON THE SUBJECT, UTHENY MERCER BIGGS STATED TO SOMEONE WHO WAS TRYING TO TAKE "HER LAND" IN ROBESON CO THAT HER HUSBAND WAS DEAD. I GUESS SHE GOT TO KEEP IT. THERE WAS MUCH CONFISCATION OF LAND BELONGING TO UELs.
BUT WM COULDNT HAVE RETURNED TO NC AND PICKED UP HIS KIDS FROM THAT MARRIAGE WITHOUT ENDANGERING HIS OWN LIFE BECAUSE OF THE MUDER WARRANTS OUT ON HIM, JOSEPH MERCER AND JOHN LEGGETT. HE ALSO COULDNT HAVE HAD TIME TO HAVE FOUR KIDS WITH THE NEW WIFE EITHER.
I BELIEVE AARON SWEEZY WAS WITH WILLIAM'S UNIT WHEN THEY TOOK PHILADELPHIA AND MAY HAVE BEEN ON THOSE PAY RECORDS TOO WITH WM. LATER. I CANT REMEMBER THE DATES NOW BUT SEEMS LIKE IT WAS LATE IN THE WAR.
I WILL CALL A COUSIN TOMORROW WHO MAY KNOW THE NAME OF WILLIAM'S LONG ISLAND BRIDE. HER SURNAME SHOULD BE THE SURNAME OF HER PRIOR HUSBAND. IF THIS IS SO, IT MAY GIVE THE CANADIAN BIGGS A LINE TO SEE WHERE THEIR DNA FITS IN.
ALSO IF HERS IS A WEIRD NAME, HER HUBBY MAY HAVE ALSO BEEN IN WM AND AARON'S OUTFIT. SO LONG AS HER NAME ISNT SMITH OR JONES. THIS ISNT ANYTHING POSSITIVE BUT MAYBE A TRAIL TO LOOK INTO. DAN

HI DOUG I HAVE DONE SOME WORK ON THIS AND WILLIAM BIGGS WAS IN THE SAME UNIT AS SWEEZY. I FOUND SOME PAY RECORDS AND IN ONE PERIOD WILLIAM BIGGS WAS REPORTED KILLED BUT APPEARED ON THE NEXT PAY PERIOD. I CANT DISCOUNT THE POSSIBLITY OF TWO WM BIGGS IN THE SAME OUTFIT, THOUGH I DEEM IT HIGHLY UNLIKELY, SO THE REPORT OF HIS DEATH WAS PROBABLY WRONG. WILLIAM WAS TRANSPORTED TO FIRST NS THEN KENT CO NB. I BELIEVE IT WAS AT OR NEAR MCKEES MILL NB. ALSO TRANSPORTED WITH WM BIGGS WAS HIS BROTHER IN LAW JOSEPH MERCER AND JOHN LEGGETT.
WILLIAM AND THE OTHER TWO COULD NOT RETURN TO ROBESON CO NC AND WILLIAM MUST HAVE JUST LEFT HIS WIFE AND WHATEVER KIDS HE HAD IN NC. HE REMARRIED UNKNOWN IN LONG ISLAND NY BEFORE GOING TO CAN. I CAN ONLY GUESS SHE WAS A WIDOW WITH AT LEAST TWO BOYS, I FORGET THEIR NAMES RIGHT NOW BUT THEY WERE LISTED AS BIGGS. I DOUBT THEY WERE OF BIGGS BLOOD, OR DNA. THE BIGGS IN CAN NOW DO NOT MATCH OUR BIGGS DNA.
WILLIAM WAS THE 5th CHILD OF JAMES BIGGS WHO DIED IN 1767/8 CURRITUCK CO NC. I HAVE NOT FOUND, FOR SURE, HIS FATHER.
I DESCEND FROM THE 6th CHILD ROBERT BIGGS ba 1755-1760 CURRITUCK CO d JUNE 1822 WARREN CO TENN. DAN BIGGS biggsidahofalls@aol.com

Tom Biggs and Odis Biggs in Lubbock,Tx

These two brothers lived their adult lives and died in Lubbock. Tom was a traveling salesmen and wrote patriotic poetry. Does anyone have any copies of the poetry books that he put together? It was probably in the 1940's and 1950's. Any family members of these two men, please contact me. They were my grandfather's brothers.

Re: William m. Nancy 1st then Mary DURKIN Ashley Pa

I'm curious as to whether you ever had a reply to this.

I'm doing the FT of William Biggs, born 1852 in PA. I realize he remarried after Nancy Ellen Walker (can't find ANYTHING on her), because he appears on the 1910 census with Mary as his wife.

Today I was looking at the 1900 census, but I'm not sure that is him. His mother, Mary, says she was born in Canada. On all other censuses, etc. William's mother and father are born in Ireland. Also - I believe he was born in 1852.

Was Mary Durkin married to McDonald before Biggs? I can't seem to find her birth anywhere.

I'll be interested in your reply - hope you're still working on this.

Thanks, Mary L
