I finally broke through a brick wall (with the help of people on the ancestry.com forums), but now I've come to a crossroads.

My ggggg-grandfather (not sure of the number of g's) was William Bigham, father of Hugh B. and husband of Sarah Braly (alt: Brawley, Branley).

From this point, it gets trickier. I've found numerous references for William (m. to Sarah) -- some list his parents as Hugh B + Margaret Duncan; others as Wiliam B and Sarah Orr; and still others as Samuel B and Elizabeth Kennedy.

How does one know which is correct when faced with so much conflicting "evidence?"
