Hi Michelle my name is Diana and several years ago I posted the email while researching the Bigio family. I am not on facebook but I am interested in the infomation you have on the family. I am a descendent of Rafael Bigio born circa 1830/1840 from Spain. He married Leucrecia Pla and had 4 children Antonio, Rafael, Eufemia and Fermin. I have done my own research and have read the book Viviendo en Caimito. Rafael Bigio was comisario de barrio during 1853 but there is no info about his family. I would like to exchange info. Is the name Mirbach or Mirabach? Please contact me.Thanks Diana

I was so little when my mom passed away. I was 8 years old. Its been along time since I've seen any of her family. The only person in her family I'm still in contact with is my cousin Andres Garcia. He is the son of Petra Bigio my mothers sister. I gave the FB name Bigio Family so he can take a look at the pictures. I also told him you had mentioned "Petra" was a familiar name. He was the one that told me about my grandfather being a baker and having the business, home and property in PR and later gambliing it away. He said he has alot of stories his mother would tell him. You can find him in fb family/friends, you should friend him. I already mentioned you to him. He may have already reached out to you. God Bless. We're getting very close :-) I see you live in Pennsylvania. My sister Grisel lives in Carlisle, Pa. I live in Connecticut. 3 Brothers in New York and 1 sister in California.

I don't know much about my great grand father. I was told that My grand father Rafael Bigio who had the baking business in Puerto Rico, was a gambler and lost the business, home and property/land in Puerto Rico. He had left my grandmother with 7 kids to raise on her own. Don't know anything after that.

Yes! Yes! Yes! You are family! The way I understand it, there were 2 brother who emigrated to PR back in the early 1800s...Rafael & Pablo Bigio. All their sons in every generation (it seems) were named after them. I bought a book titled "Vivir en Caimito". It talks about our ancestors, Rafael & Pablo...they were something else. And they were (among other things) bakers & butchers. Our family history of baking goes VERY far back. There's even a hotel in Italy named after our family that's known for their pastries. Now that you are on the FB page, talk with Michelle Bigio. She's the one who started the page & has a ton of info. My great grandmother was Estebania Bigio. Her dad was Pablo Bigio. Im curious to know if you know what ever happened to you great grandfather...my g/grandmom talked about Rafael's mysterious disappearance. Some say he went to South Africa, others say he went to Venezuela. But my g/grandmom made it sound like it was something fast & hush-hush. Wow...you are another piece of my family puzzle...I am so happy you reached out!

update: I have an update to this info. My mothers name was Isabel Perez, from Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. She married my father Carmelo Perez Sr and had 6 children. Pedro Juan AKA Johnny, Carmelo Jr, Raymond. Grisel. Milagros and myself Carmen. My grandfather on mothers side name was Rafael Bigio and Married Juana Baez. Together they had 7 children Rafael, Francisco AKA Sico, Petra, Paula, Juanita, Leonor and Isabel. My grandfather was a baker and was well off. Had a bakery business in Puerto Rico and owned land. After further research I noted that Rafael I believe was his fathers name also. Also noted Rafael and Brother Pablo came from Spain and had this bakery business. There is a Bread call pan "BIGIO" that I believe originated in Spain. If anyone has any info about Rafael Bigio or his Wife Juana Baez. Pls email me at RIVERAC3962@AOL.COM.
Nancy, I want to thank you for the info you provided. I obtained a copy of the book you suggested "Viviendo en Caimito" and I really believe the local sheriff Rafael Bigio is my ggg grandfather. The dates seem to match and the fact that he was born in Spain. I still have to confirm by finding out who he married. If he was married to Lucrecia Pla, then he is the one I was looking for. I checked with Elias Bigio (he is a descendant from the Pablo & Casimira branch like you) and he believes Pablo's second name started with a B but was pronounced "Barabach". I'll will share anything else I find. Diana Damador@ORA.FDA.GOV
Nancy, it was great to know you confirmed some of the research I have done. The Rafael Bigio Rodriquez born circa 1885 was an uncle of your mom but from the first marriage. But he is not the one I am looking for. The Rafael Bigio I am looking had to have been born around the 1850s because he had a son Antonio Bigio Pla who married on december 14, 1891. The Rafael I am looking for may be Pablo's brother who moved on to Argentina. Is there any way you could get more info from your relatives? I will continue my research and share my findings with you. Diana please E-mail me at Damador@ORA.FDA.GOV

Hello & thanks for your prompt reply. I talked today to my mom and my uncle, and they confirmed that my maternal great-grandmother was Casimira Díaz, who had five children, and that my maternal great-grandfather Pablo Bigio was of Spanish descent, but were not sure if from Asturias in the north or the Canary Islands. My uncle did confirm that Pablo had children back in Spain not with Casimira, and that he emigrated to Puerto Rico along with a brother who eventually moved on to Argentina. Pablo had a bakery and also dabbled in pharmacy (do you happen to know if his other surname --maternal-- was Beveraggi?). Mom recalls that she had an uncle Rafael Bigio, but wasn't sure if he had Casimira as mother or was raised by Eularia.

There is a book, "Vivir en Caimito (Living in Caimito ward)" by Msgr. Fernando Picó, in which a Bigio (Rafael? Pablo?) figured prominently in the 1850's as local sheriff to this rural community.

I have corresponded with Isaac Bigio, the political analyst, and he offered up that the Bigio surname has a Mediterranean origin (Italian? Hebrew? Syrian?).

Hope you find this useful. Please share anything that falls your way.

Nancy I checked my notes and I believe your grandfather Pilar is the son of Pablo Bigio and Casimira Diaz.Did he have another name like Jose or Genaro? I believe he is one of 5 children (Jose, Genaro, Gumersuda, Pablo & Chela) born to Pablo Bigio (Spain) & Casimera Diaz (PR). This was Pablo's second marraige. His first marriage was to Eularia "Olaya" Rodriguez (Spain) and they had 9 children. Please confirm if any of this info rings a bell. Damador@ORA.FDA.GOV

I have some info from the Bigio-Rodriguez & Bigio-Diaz branches but I haven't confirmed if Pablo Bigio was in fact the first Bigio in PR. Check with your husband on some of his parent/grandparents names and I could check my notes to see if we are related.

He had told me the first Bigio in PR was Pablo Bigio who was first married to a Rodriguez, and later a Diaz. However, my research seems to indicate there was another Bigio that could be my ancestor. I need to check my notes again and will be more than happy to share any info I have with you and others.

Hi Diana and Gilberto: My grandfather Pilar Bigio-Díaz, b. 1898, d. 1981 in San Juan PR, I believe that he had a brother Pablo Bigio-Díaz. I was told that their father was a baker, also named Pablo, born in the Asturias region of northern Spain. The Bigios had some land in the Caimito ward of San Juan, onetime dedicated to livestock and farming--now some of these scenic rolling hills just south of the city house upscale suburban homes. Don Pilar had 18 children, my mother was the 16th.

If you learn something else about our family and our surname, kindly share it with me.

I am trying to track the 1rst Bigio family in PR I thought Pablo Bigio from Spain was the first but the dates do not match the records I found. My gg father was Antonio Bigio Pla and married Maria Norberta Ortega on December 14, 1891. His father was Rafael Bigio. Pablo Bigio had a son named Rafael but its not the same Rafael who was my ggg father. If anyone has any info please contact me.
