We are trying to take our Bigley family back further, but we are well and truly stuck! DNA seems the only option left, and no one from the Bigley family has had it done on Ancestry, so I am begging you all to consider this.
However. One thing that is pronounced in our family of Bigleys is a severe turning in of the right eye. Not all Bigleys have it in our family, but an awful lot do.
So I want to know if there are any of you who are Bigleys have this characteristic. It may help us work our our Bigley family.
Just to let you know, we have traced back to a John Bigley born supposedly in 1822, and supposedly in Dover, Kent, England. However we can not find any evidence to prove this, and we are led to believe that his father was also called John. John junior was in the Navy and Merchant Navy, and the father was supposedly a seaman. We think they may be from Ireland.

Hi Maria,

Henry Wilkins Bigley (1825-190), who was Philip's son, was baptized at Parnassus Presbyterian Church. Actually, I think it was Henry's wife and a bunch of their kids who were baptized there, in 1872. I have a letter from the church which I'll have to dig up. I wrote to the Presbyterian Church there about 10 years ago and got the information. If I remember, they even sent me a copy of the page from the book where they recorded it (or maybe it was a transcription). Either way, I'll try and find that for you. I recently found out that Henry's father Philip died on Feb 14, 1872, which was just a few weeks after these baptisms, so maybe the Presbyterian church handled his burial. It would be wonderful if you could find out anything about him. I've got all the entries in findagrave.com already, just waiting for the cemetery information to be discovered. Check it out some time.

Mike

I talked to someone today from our local library that said I need to contact the church's in the area. I believe the book said they were presbyterians. So I will be looking into that. Hope I can find something for us.
Maria

I wonder if the name was incorrectly recorded in the book: "A Genealogical and Biographical History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania"
And does anyone know who Phillip Sr.'s parents where?

Thomas and Edgar Bigley

I am looking information on Thomas and Edgar Bigley who married Steidley sisters. I believe Edgar and Ethel divorced (as opposed to he dying) as Ethel is married to Clarence Underwood by 1930.

Thomas and Catherine were living in Center, Greeley, Nebraska in the 1920 census and in Grand Island, Hall, Nebraska in the 1930 census. In the 1930 census, they had the following children:
Monica, 13
Eulalia Mary, 10
Irene C., 10
Robert J., 2 6/12
Donald, 8/12

Thomas and Catherine are buried at Highland Cemetery in Gage County, Nebraska.

Edgar and Ethel were living in Highland, Hooker, Nebraska in 1920 census. They had one son, Lawrence E., age 8. In 1930, Ethel has a new family with another husband, Clarence Underwood.

Any help with any information would be greatly appreciated.

Juls

Henry Leslie Bigley and Cora Black Bigley were my grandparents. I don't remember grandma, but grandpa died when I was a baby, in 1961 in Paint Twp., PA. Cora died sometime during the 1950's. They had 9 children (all deceased): Clair, Guy, Iva (Burton), Waiva (McCleary), Roy, Emma (Hardy), Flossie (Cook), Goldie (Reynolds), and Wayne. (Roy Henry Bigley was my father; born 3/31/12, died 5/9/94).
I have heard of John Bigley but do not recall any particulars.
I hope this helps.

I recently stumbled on to a 1930 census entry (should be attached) showing Dora Bigley, born 1875, widowed with 2 children - Walter R Bigley born 1906 and Lee C Bigley born 1907. Does anyone know who Dora was married to? I think it was probably one of mine, but have not found the answer yet. Thanks!

Mike Bigley in Florida

Mike, I hope you won't mind me popping in here but I have been looking for information on my 3rd great-grandfather, John Bigley, for about 14 years now with little success.
I have no record of him in Clarion County but he was in Venango County which is next-door. I know he was born after 1810 and died before 29 November 1848 when a petition was made for sale of his property in Venango County Orphans' Court. A William Bigley was administrator of the estate but relationship is not given.

John's wife was named Mary (last name unknown) and they had a daughter, Mary, born about 1838. After John's death, it is possible that Mary either married or kept house for a Robert Gilchrist over in Mercer County. In the 1850 census Mr. Gilchrist is listed as head of household and there is a Mary Bigley, age 12, listed as well.

The daughter, Mary Bigley, married a William O'Conner in 1852 and they lived over in Butler County.

Since all of these areas are adjacent, I'm hoping that just maybe you may have knowledge of my John.

Beverly

Hi,

I believe I'm descended from the Philip Bigley you mention, by way of Henry Bigley. I haven't been very active on the genealogy for a number of years. Right now I've got my search back to Philip Sr (about 1793 - 1867). My John Bigley was born 1834 to Philip and his wife Mary Esteft. If this is the same John as yours, I'd love to get a copy of that death certificate. All of my research consists of just a few census entries, so I don't have much.

Mike Bigley

Thank you for the response. Is John Michael Bigley the same one that was married to a Barbara, that I found a James Bigley living with in the 1870 census, Monroe Twp. If you followed all the threads in my query you will see that a Jamie responded and one of her theories may make some sense. Michael died in 1860 and Margaret in 1863 could they be the parents of my James A. as he was born in 1860, after their deaths did a family member raise him. I have no clues in James A. sons' given names, Archibald, Robert and James, the daughter's given names are no help either. James wife Charlotte Shea (Shay), she may have been born out of wedlock as her mother Susan Smith was married to James Bish when Charlotte was a child, all from Clarion Co. I have been sucessful in tracking down this family except for the parentage of James A. Bigley. Any ideas would be appreciated....Marilyn

Jamie, I ruled Philadelphia out simply because the Bigley's are adament that James A. was born in Clarion Co. his birth was Feb. 11, 1860. The naming pattern for James and Charlotte's children does not follow a family tradition. Children in order of birth: Robert H., Archie Ellsworth, Bertha H., Carrie Marie, Catherine, Levina Charlotte, Eva and James. Your idea might not be wierd, I was thinking along the line that he might have been adopted. In the 1870 census for Clarion Co. there seemed to be alot of children marked as adopted. Go to my personal e-mail address and also direct me where I might find Michael and Margaret's family tree if it is on line.
mdicks5999@comcast.net

Out of curiousity why did you rule out this James? Anyway, my Michael died in 1860 and Margaret in 1863. He would have been 50ish when he died and she would have been 44ish when she died. Now in some strange way could she have been pregnant with another child in the 1860 census and it possibly be your James? Like I said far fetched. But James is a name that runs through Margaret's family as I have seen over and over. And I have totally lost these kids of Michael and Margaret's after the 1860 census so I have no way of knowing if this wierd idea is even possible. My hubby's grgrandpa would have only been like 5 when his mom(Margaret) died so he wouldn't have been able to fend for himself. I get so excited when I think that their is someone else looking for this Bigley clan. Sorry to throw something so far out there at you. Jamie

Jamie, thanks for the response first I have had on this issue. I have seen the James age 10 in the 1870 census in Philadelphia and ruled him out. I might also add after reviewing John and Barbara Bigley of Monroe Twp. their family tree all children are accounted for and he is not their child. Now, let me hear your far fetched idea.
Hi Marilyn,
My hubby has Bigley's in Clarion co also and I have been trying to find the parents of his grgrgrandpa Michael Bigley and Margaret Simpson. But first have you seen that in the 1870 Census for Philadelphia co PA there is a John and Jane Bigley with James age 10 as their son? The thing is that John and Jane are living in a household with a Haggerty? Which is also strange for me as one of Michael's daughters married with a Haggerty. I believe the twp. for this census was 65th district 20 ward. The census taker should have been shot as he never filled in any other information at all like where they were born etc. Try this and see what you think! I have another far fetched idea but I will wait to hear from you first! Jamie

Bigley in Clarion Co., PA

I have a James A. BIGLEY and according to his obituary was born in Clarion Co. died 1941 in New Castle, Lawrence Co., PA. In the 1870 census there is a James 10 yrs. living in Monroe Twp. in the household of John and Barbara Bigley, however Barbara is 61 yrs and I believe at that age would be a grandparent. In the 1880 cenus there is a James Bigley in Elk Twp. 21 yrs. living as a boarder. There is another James Bigley son of John and Hannah Bigley but he was born abt. 1857 and I do not believe he is mine.
James A. Bigley was married to Charlotte Shay or Bish b. 1867 in Clarion Co. and her mother was Susannah Smith (daughter of Absalom and Catherine Smith). I have sent for James death certificate hoping it will give at least one of his parents' names. Can anyone help with this family.
Marilyn

Re: Agnes T Bigley

I only have information about her when she was married to Joseph. Joseph H. Dayton, born April 1867 in New York/New Jersey(not sure which, sorry). I am not sure of the year he died either. Married Agnes T Bigley. Children were William-1890, Jessie(female-1897), Mary Jane-1899, Grace T-1900, Dorothy V-1905, Bertha Gates(my Great grandmother)-July 12 1909(Downingtown, PA)-January 7, 1967. My grandmother said that Bertha passed away from pneumonia. The seventh child was, I'm guessing stillborn, because both Agnes and the baby died during childbirth in 1912. Joseph's parents were Jesse Parker Dayton 1841-? and Mary Jane Blower(Dayton)-1858. He had a sister Clara-1889. Joseph spent time in Eastern State Penitenery any where between 1912 and 1920. In the 1910 census he was at home with his family and 1920, he was in prison. I am working on trying to figure out the exact dates and the reason. When he was released, he became the caretaker for a park in Downingtown, PA on Wallace Ave(most likely Kerr Park). My sister has a picture of Agnes and Joseph(two seperate pictures). She is going to send them to me and then I will have to get them on my computer somehow. You are welcome to a copy of them when I get them. You should be able to find him in the census from the information I just gave you. And anything you have on Agnes would be helpful. I have next to nothing on her family. Thanks and good luck with your research.
tyffany

Sarah Bigley McMeal

Looking for any information on a Sarah Bigley McMeal, married to a Dr. Daniel McMeal. They lived in Memphis, Tennessee circa 1870, according to the census from that year. Both however were born in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. McMeal's father was also a doctor......he lived and worked in Pittsburgh, PA. I believe Sarah died in 1875 and her husband a year later, as neither one are listed in later census records. They had 4 children though only one is listed in the 1870 census records, a son named Daniel.

Also Sarah's married name is spelled McNeal in the 1870 census.

What I have is a biography that says,

"†Book: Belmont County History, 1988, page 109, article written by: Janot
Hutchins Coe:
THE FAMILY OF JAMES BIGLEY
Commons Pleas Journal "A" Pg. 188 of Belmont Co lists the naturalizationof
Joseph Bigley, a native of England. What is known of his family is contained
inthe will probated in November 1844 showingheirs as sons, Nathen B., Joseph, Thomas, dau. Margaret, grand dau. Marget Parks and a bequest that head and foot stones be placed at "my own, my wife's and dau. Nancy's graves". Another bequest was "To my son James bigley's children by the last wife", sixty dollars to be equaly divided betweenthem". No record of an earlier marriage has been found. "

There is more about James and his family but that, what I copied is the important part.

All I know about Joseph is he was supposedly from England or North Ireland
They oldest boy James was born in Maryland in 1792. So I would guess if we have the same Nathan B. Bigley the family worked its way westward from Maryland to Pennsylvania to Ohio.

Sounds promising. Feel free to email me directly to compare notes in more detail.
