Wow! Our Christophori was born in about 1776 so I would say that might be the link we were looking for. Perhaps Andreas was named for his grandfather? And perhaps that is the Michael that came to Cincinnati then disappeared?

Ok, it's late but I did a quick review of my files. I have a message from a descendent of Ludovicus, daughter Barbars who says Ludovicus father was named Andreas. Whoo hoo, we just may be on the right track!

I haven't worked on this family for quite awhile but someone pointed me to a record I had missed somehow that shows Christophori came to America as well.

Here's what I found in a book titled "St John Cemetery burials 1849-1879" published by the Hamilton County Genealogical Society I believe, here's the entry...
Bihn, Kristof - Buried 15 May 1852 - Row 23, Grave 1 - Age 76 - Church St John the Baptist
That age aligns well with the record you found and this is the cemetery Andreas and his family are in, but those numbers mean nothing to todays caretakers so I don't know where to look for Christophori, or even if he has a stone.

In another book, "Hamilton County, Ohio Church Burial Records 1850-1859 - I found this record: Bihn, Christoph - Buried: 16 May 1852 - Died May - Age 76 - Code EE (= St John the Baptist Church) h/o Catharine Schoenenberger

Thank you so much for sharing! I'm excited to see this!
I found a short biography of George Peter Bihn in The History of Cincinnati, it states that his father, Andreas, learned his trade in Germany and came to Cincinnati in about 1843. That's the only thing I've found about when he immigrated.

I recently found him in the 1850 census in Cincinnati (with the help of someone on another message board, the name was spelled Pean on the census). Also found him in 1860 and 1870, then he died in 1875. There are ads for his pottery in several of the Cincinnati City directories.

Christophori had at least five children. The Catharinam Biehn married to Michaelem Schwab could be one of them. She would have been about 27 at the time of the marriage mentioned.

I believe Petrus Biehn is the son of Barbara, the daughter of Christophori but that may be wrong.

I listed Christophori's children in a previous message but
here they are again.
Barbara - Christened 22 Apr 1807
Joannes Petrus Bihn - Christened 9 Feb 1810
Catharina Margaretha - Christened 12 Apr 1812
Andreas - Christened 2 Sep 1814
Elizabetha - Christened 20 Jul 1817

As I had said before, I found this interesting as Andreas had four children, George Peter, Elizabeth, Catherine and Barbara.

Given that George Peter's children were sent to their "uncle" Fr Joseph Bihn in Tiffin when their mother died I think there must be a connection, but I've never been able to find it. It seems logical that the connection would be Christophori and Ludovici.

I found these marriages:
-Catharinam Biehn married to Michaelem Schwab 18 Jun 1839 in Dirmstein, Bayern, Pfalz.
-Andream Bihn married to Elisabetham Barth 17 Oct. 1843 in Dirmstein, Bayern, Pfalz.
-Barbaram Biehn married to Joannem Weis 9 Jun 1836 in Dirmstein, Bayern, Pfalz.
-Margaretham Biehn married to Franciscum Acker 8 Feb. 1831 in Dirmstein, Bayern, Pfalz.
-Petrus Biehn, son of Barbarae Biehn christened, 19 Jul 1833 in Dirmstein, Bayern, Pfalz.

Andream would be Christophori's son. Barbaram, and Margaretham would be Ludovici's daughters. I'm not sure who the Petrus and Barabare Biehn belong to though. Also does anyone know whose daughter this Catharinam is? Supposedly Ludavici's daughter Catherine died in Germany bef. 1845 as she didn't come with the family.

In trying to prove a supposed connection between the families of Ludovici and Christophori, has searched anything about the marriage of Anthony Bihn and Lucy Deimling. I have seen info. that they were married in Buffalo, NY on 11 Sept. 1830. Does anyone know if this is right? Ludovici's wife supposedly came to the US in 1845. However, Maria Anna Bihn who married Frederick Born had a child Frederick Born born in Ohio, 1842. Do we know approx. when Christophori's family came?

No. I searched the records at the Family History library and found the following:

Christophorus Bien married Catharina Schaeneberger on 16 Nov 1801 Katholisch, Laumersheim, Pfalz, Bayern

Barbara Bihn
Christening 22 Apr 1807, Katholisch, Dirmstein, Pfalz, Bayern
Parents: Christophori Bihn, Catharinae Schoenebergerin

Joannes Petrus Bihn
Christening 9 Feb 1810 Katholisch, Dirmstein, Pfalz, Bayern
Parents: Christophori Bihn, Catharinae Schoenebergerin

Catharina Margaretha Bihn
Christening 12 Apr 1812 Katholisch, Dirmstein, Pfalz, Bayern
Parents: Christophori Bihn, Catharinae Schoenebergerin

Andreas Bihn
Christening: 2 Sep 1814 Katholisch, Dirmstein, Pfalz, Bayern
Parents: Christophori Bihn, Catharinae Schoenebergerin

Elizabeth Bihn
Birth 20 Jul 1817
Christening: 21 Jul 1817 Katholisch, Dirmstein, Pfalz,Bayern
Parents: Christophori Bihn, Catharinae Schoenebergerin

and
Petrus Biehn
Birth: 15 Jul 1833
Christening: 19 Jul 1833 Katholisch, Dirmstein, Pfalz,Bayern
Mother: Barbarae Biehn

I was interested to find these as Andreas had a son George PETER, a daughter BARBARA, a daughter CATHERINE and a daughter ELIZABETH.

According to his tombstone my Andreas was born 20 Apr 1814 and his obituary gives Dirmstein, Bavaria as his place of birth so I believe this could be him.

I have tried many times to find more on this family. I have corresponded with the orphanage in Tiffin but they have no information about Father Bihn's family. Andreas is sometimes listed in the census (and in the city directories) as Andrew, and of course, the last name is different every time you search.

I've never seen any of the others in Cincinnati. As I mentioned in an earlier message I have seen mention of a Maurice Bihn in Cincinnati and possibly a Michael, neither of these are from our group but I don't know where they are from.

It appears that most of the other Bihn's in the area are decended from Ludovicus Bihn.

Are you connected to Andreas in some way? I'd love to share info. Two heads are so much better than one.

Sorry about that!

I have visited your website in the past, very impressive!
I really appreciate you taking the time to try to help. This has been a real road block for me. I can't seem to get past it. There were a couple other Bihns in Cincinnati that I can't place anywhere. I know that was a Michal (in the late 1880s) and there was another one too, that doesn't see to be connected to our line but I don't remember the name off the top of my head.

Anyway, thanks again.

First I can tell you it is not TIPPIN but it is TIFFIN, Seneca Co., Ohio
I was born there so I know <wink>
As I said, I do not have names of any siblings to Lucovicus, nor the name of his parents.
So to say anymore would just be hypothetical, but isn't that the way you must be in Genealogy?
Using your intuition, then digging further to see if you can document and prove your point sounds like the road to figuring this all out.
Be sure to post here on the board if you find anything further!
My BIHN database is online at:
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=wmbihn
Good luck in your searches!
Thanks. Looking at the records on Mormon film it looks like there were two families of Bihns in Dirmstein, Pfalz, Bayern in the very early 1800s. One was Christophori Bihn and Catherine Schoenebergerin and the other was Ludovici Bihn and Margareth Rothermel (spelling varies on all these names). Christophori's son Andreas settled in Cincinnati Ohio, he had one son, George Peter Bihn, and three daughters. G Peter died at age 40 leaving his young wife and four small children. His widow died in Cincinnati six years later and the children were sent to Fr Joseph Bihn (son of Ludovici) in Tippin OH.

There has to be a connection, it's not like there were no orphanages in Cincinnati. Family tradition says they were sent to their uncle. He obviously was not their uncle but perhaps their great uncle? Can you add anything to this?

Is this board still active? My Bihn's are descended from Andreas Bihn of Cincinnati. As near as I can figure out his father was Christophe Bihn brother to the Ludovicus Bihn who is the common ancester of the "northern" Bihns.

Has anyone gone this far back? Can you confirm or disprove this connection?

The Bihn family had a very strong presence in the Black Forest, Namely in the Village of Menzingen in the Stae of Baden Wittenberg. I am a bit confused in that my Grandfather Otto Bihn's wife's last name was Boeckle and if the spelling you have was "Americanized". There also was a Bihn that had a famous restaraunt in NYC in the 30's thru the late 40's. He had a son who who had 2 sons in Upstate NY.In the late 1890's a few Bihns left the Village of Menzingen Germany and one settled in Chicago. The orginal Bihns dating back circa 1500's came from Switzerland.

Otto Bihn had I believe 4 brothers, one drowned /or was killed in the Rhine (around Bingen) circa 1910. As I stated earlier one went to NYC, and I saw two graves and headstones in Menzingen. Now my grandfather had 2 sons, one died of shrapnal ( he was 18 and in the Waffen SS0)the other son Otto junior was in the Kriegs Marinand survived the war but died from a freak accident around 1975. Then there are or were 7 daughters. Erna the oldest died just shy of her 90th birthday last year. Brigitte Mazur)the youngest lives in Pittsburg was married to a nut job Russian) Toni, Melita, Eiganie, Dora live pretty much in the Karlsruh area. Klara, my mother, lives with me in Cincinnati. Now there are three more Bihns From Otto (junior) .Uwe would be about 62 or 63 if he had'nd died in a motercycle accident, he was the real wild one ( he was in the merchant marine and travelled all over the world and pretty much had girl friends in every port , so he said.THere is Peter and Thomas Bihn ther in their 50's and live in Germany.. Want more dmews@cinci.rr.com

hi
i dont have a whole lot of information about that right now because my grandparents have it in a box at their house, but from what i know, that is true. anton bihn immigrated over here from germany (its believed that he came from manhein) between like 1820 and 1830 and he married lucy deimling. i do not know a whole lot about their children but i do know that they resided in buffalo new york for about 4 years or so. i am going to my granparents in about 2 weeks or so, and after that i will have more information for you. i hope this helps...all i know is that i am related to them, not certain of the specifics yet though.
tiffany bell

I have accumulated some info on this family through online research, but it is not documented. Mary BIHN married Edward WASHNER about 1868(?), and they had 6 children:
1) John A. b. Apr 1869 marr. Ella MILLS aft. 1910
2) Lucy b. ca 1871
3) Ferdinand b. Jul 1873 marr. Alice HOLWICK, had 4 children; d. 14 Aug 1924 in Cuyahoga Co., Ohio
4) Herman J. b.Sep 1875, d. 12 Mar 1913
5) Henry J. b. Sep 1878, marr. Louise ? ca 1904; d. 4 Feb 1942 in Cuyahoga Co., Ohio
6) Joseph S. b. Oct 1882
Edward WASHNER was b. ca 1845 in Holland, and died before1900. He was a railroad engineer. His son Ferdinand also worked for the railroad, first as a fireman, then as an engineer. Later, he was an auto worker in the Cleveland area. Ferdinand's children were probably all born in Crawford Co., Ohio:
1) Edward b. Jun 1898
2) Clarence b. ca 1902
3) Mary Helen b. ca 1904
4) Victor b. ca 1906
Hope this helps!

Kristina you have a wonderful website. My research shows Lucy Deimling as having 12 children including William Andrew b.1837 and Margaret b.1847. Margaret married Joseph Deimling and had a daughter Lucy L. b.1864. Is this the same Family line? The repeating names are confusing. Thank you so much. I have an old photo album from1800's and i don't know who they are.

I am new to this thread. I am researching the family of Margaret Bihn (1841) daughter of Anton Bihn. She married Joseph Deimling of Wood Count Ohio and had 7 children. My great-grandmother Lucy L was the oldest girl. The records indicate Anton married a Lucy Deimling and Margaret is their daughter. Could that be? I would appreciate any info on Margaret and her parents.

Hi Mary Bihn, this is Mary Bihn! It seems everyone on here is talking about the Bihn's from NW OH. Have you even run into information about the Bihn's from SW OH? Looking for Andreas Bihn - born in Bavaria 20 Apr 1814. Married Elizabeth Barth also born in Bavaria. Doubt anyone else is looking for them as decendents were scarce but thought you might have run into them as I've run into yours often. There was also one other Bihn family in Cincinnati in the late 1800s, a Michael Bihn who doesn't have an obvious connection.
The earliest record I find is in 1857 when Andreas had a pottery on Hamilton Rd. The city directory sometimes refers to him as Andrew. While he's in the 1857 city directory I don't find him in the census until 1870.

Appreciate anything, even the meaning of the name. These folks were catholic and may have been from Dirmstein, Pfalz, Bayern.

Bihn History

Hello: My wife, Grace M Bihn is a great granddaughter to Edward Bihn and we have been working on the Bihn history for about 6 months now and have some of Edward and Viola (Benadum) Bihn and their Children's info. We were in Toledo and Bowling Green for 3 days at the end of July and found information at the court house and liberary. Maybe between the three of us we can come up with most of it. We have children as: Caspar, Edmon?, Franklin Edward, Gertrude Lenice Mary, Lewis, Hilbert, Iris, John Michael, and George Washington. John Michael is my wife's Grace's Grandfather.
Edward's father is Joseph Bihn and his mother is Maria Clara (Blecke) Their Children are: Edward, Lewis J., Lucy, John, Frank Perry, Mary Emma, Albert, Catherine"Kate", Caroline "Carrie", and 3 infants that died at or near birth. We know some of the dates for birth and death of these people but need help as they used some kind of a naming pattern and its hard to know which person goes to what generation. We know that Joseph was born in Medina County, Ohio and will be sending for the birth records for that county thru the Mormon Church in Salt Lake City, Utah. Glad to know someone else is working on this too. We do not have any info for Hilbert, Please return anything by e-mail.
