biles family info

I am looking for information on the Biles side of my fathers family. My Great grandfather was John Henry Biles b:13 JUl 1874 d: 29 Nov 1947 in Spokane WA. He was married to Ida Ballard. His father was Alexander Patterson Biles b:6 Jul 1826 I believe in Towanda, PA but I have found other places as a possibility as well for a birth place, d:28 Jul 1902 in Spokane, WA. His father was John Biles b:2 Jan 1802 d:6 Fwb 1880. I goes on to Alexander Patterson Biles 28 Oct 1783 to 28 Mar 1855 in Pennslyvania and Henry Biles 28 Feb 1748 to 14 Jan 1811 also in Pennslyvania and then John Biles I believe was born in about 1720.
I would be intrested in hearing if someone can fill in some of the holes that I have as I have little information on their Marriages and have had little luck trying to trace it any farther back.
I would also be interested in hearing from and cousins that this line has produced. I know that I have some relatives in Pennslyvania because my uncle Bernard Biles was in contact with some one there before he died in 1985, but due to his death and that of his son we are having trouble tracking down that information.
Thank you for and help

Dave Johnson

Marion Biles of Greene, NY, granddaughter of John Biles

In 1904 and 1914, two of my family members responded to letters from John Biles. I'm pretty sure that this is the same John Biles who authored "How Green Was Our Valley", and the letters were sent out as part of his family research. We are a different line, but two of my ancestors responded to John's letters. Years later, transcriptions of these responses were provided given to my cousin by Marion Biles (granddaughter of John Biles) Marion was in DC doing research, and stopped in to visit by cousin in Charles County.
I'm trying to find out if the actual letters written by my ancestors are still in existence with someone in John's line. The letters were from Abram Biles (dated 1904) and from Rev. Charles A. Biles (dated 1914) I would love to get copies of the actual letters if they are still around.

Can anyone help? I've spent the past three years researching this line and copies of these letters would be a wonderful addition to my research.Abram was my great-great grandfather's brother and Charles was Abram's cousin.

Thanks.

I am just getting started tracing my mothers side of the family and have very little to go on. I do recall her having bought a book about 25 years ago that was the Biles family history. It was lost in moving or being lent. I believe it was a privately published book. Does anyone know of a copy?

My mother is Margaret F. Biles (1926) from Badin N.C. Her father was William Franklin Biles (1894 - 1956). That's about as far back as I have.

Looking for parents of Thomas Biles (1815) who married Eliza Hoopes (1815) in 1834. Family is listed in the IGI as Beale (which is incorrect) In 1850 they are found in Springfield Pa, by 1860 they moved to West Whiteland Chester county Pa. where Eliza Biles remained. Thomas Biles is mentioned in a will in 1868 but is not listed on the 1870 census with Eliza. It is assumed that he passed away but as yet unproven. Thomas and Eliza Biles children were Joseph Hoopes Biles, Mary J Biles, Sarah G Biles, Ann H Biles, and Hanna Rebecca Biles (who died at age 14)
Their daughter Sarah "Sally" Biles became Sarah Stackhouse. She married John Stackhouse approx 1873 and remained in West Whiteland.
Their daughter Mary J Biles became Mary J Steele. She married Dilwyn Steele and removed to Delaware County sometime after 1860.
Ann H Biles became Ann H Gibson. She married Nathan Gibson and removed to Philadelphia, Pa
Any info would be appriciated.
Thanks,
Dawn

LAMBERT - BILES: Quakers in Pennsylvania/New Jersey

The Quaker records at Fall Township Meeting House in Bucks Co., PA include births, deaths, and ?marriages. The birth records list several children of John Biles and his wife Mary Lambert. Lambert Biles (one of their sons), birthdate is recorded Aug. 10, 1717. Thomas Biles, also identified as a son of John and Mary, birth Mar. 12, 1710. The oldest son from this record appears to be Samuel Biles, b. Feb. 26, 1708. One son, John Biles, lived a short time (Aug 14, 1715 to Sept 9, 1716). One daughter, Ruth Biles, is identified as being born Mar. 13, 1712.

Some say that Thomas Biles (b. Mar. 12, 1710), who married Nov. 7, 1729 Elizabeth Lambert (his first cousin), are the parents of Thomas Biles of Rowan County, North Carolina (who left a will probated 1784). The Quakers seem to keep such careful records. Who were the witnesses on Feb. 2, 1707 at the Quaker Chesterfield MH New Jersey of the marriage between John Biles (b. 1678) and Mary Lambert? Who were the witnesses of the marriage Nov 7, 1729 between Thomas Biles (b. Mar. 12, 1710) and Elizabeth Lambert? What is the proof that the Thomas Biles in Rowan Co, NC (will probated 1784) is the same Thomas Biles (b. Mar. 12, 1710)?

The Quaker records suggest that the Lamberts were very prominent among the 'Friends' in New Jersey (at the Chesterfield Meeting House [MH]). We know of the prominence of William Biles and wife Jane among the 'Friends/Quakers'. But what is known about the leadership role the Lamberts played? Can anyone shed any light on this question?

Joseph and Rebecca had a daughter named Margaret Clark Biles. I don't have birth or death dates for Joseph or Langhorne and the only date I have for Margaret is her death date of 1-25-1908.

The Buffalo Express
Buffalo, Erie Co., NY
Thursday Morning, September 8, 1910

BILES-HIMMELSBACH

Last evening at 8 o'clock in the presence of 70 kinsfolk and friends,
Miss Florence HIMMELSBACH, daughter of Mrs. Lydia A. PRICE, was married to Mr.
Edward James BILES at the home of bride's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Fred
UNGER of Norwood avenue, the Reverend Clarence E. ALLEN officiating. The
ribbons forming the aisle were carried by Miss Clara UNGER of Buffalo and
Miss Dorothy SAXTON of Albany, both gowned in white. Miss UNGER carried an
arm bunch lavended asters tied with lavender tulle, and Miss SAXTON had pink
asters tied with pink tulle. Mrs. Herbert WANDER, matron of honor, wore her
wedding gown of white satin and carried white asters. Miss Alice HIMMELSBACH was flower girl and wore white with pink ribbons, carrying a basket of pink asters. The bride, who entered with her uncle, Dr. George A. HIMMELSBACH, was gowned in ivory satin, trimmed with duchess and rose point
lace, her tulle veil being fastened with lilies of the valley. She carried
a bouquet of roses and lilies of the valley. Mr. Homer G. BILES was the best man, and Mr. Herbert WANDER and Mr. Wilbur UNGER were the ushers. The bridal party entered as Mrs. Frank E. HALL played the Lohengrin chorus. The house was
decorated with asters and palms, the bride's table, with fourteen covers,
having for a centerpiece a mound of white asters and pink candles. After their wedding journey, Mr. and Mrs. BILES will be at home in Livingston street.

Amy was also married to a "Biles" man, I beleive his name to be "Bob" Please reply if any of this sounds familier. Thank You, Sheri

Henry Biles, Rev. Soldier

My husband's 4th great grandfather was Henry Biles, b. 1748, d. 1811, a Rev. soldier according to "The Biles Family" book by Bryan Biles. Henry married Eleanor Patterson and they had 9 children: John, Charles, William (my husband's 3rd great grandfather), Robert and Henry (twins), Alexander, Benjamin, Mary, and Phoebe. These Biles children were probably born in PA. William, b. 1779, married Mary MCCauley and they had 8 children: Horatio, Elizabeth, Peggie, William, Matilda, Charles (my husband's great grandfather), Hattie, and Margaret. Any cousins out there who would like to correspond about further data, or does anyone know the parentage of Henry Biles, the Rev. soldier?

I'm looking for Elizabeth Biles who married
Henry Alexander Sheppard. Elizabeth was
born in April 1857 - her parents were William Builes and
Elizabeth Handsforth. They live in Southampton
for many years - but I think that William Biles
may have come for Dorchester or Winchester.

Does anyone see a connection? If so please
e-mail.

Also Henry Alexander Sheppard was born in New York,
I don't know how he came to be in Southampton
UK, but I think he worked for the White Star
Line and Southampton was one of their ports.

Regards

Jak Daniels

I am looking for information on the Stephen N.(Newt)Biles Family in Giles Co., TN. My Grandmother was Mary Virginia Biles born in Elkton,Giles Co., TN. on June 1, 1865. She had three sisters and four brothers who, from all indication were born in Giles Co., TN. Mary Virginia Biles married Thomas Edwin Glaze on April 14, 1881 (my Grandfather). I would like very much to be able to trace my Grandmother's family. There is some indication that they(the Biles family) migrated into Texas from TN as did the Glazes in and around Abilene, Taylor Co., Texas.

Biles/Penn?

Does anyone knows of a marr between "Bob" and Amy Singleton in Penn, possibly in Marcus Hook. They had one child who died soon after its birth. He died then she moved to California with her father, George Singleton. She remarried in about 1933 and had one child, Barbara SMITH, my Mother in 1938. Francis was "Bob's" Mother. She sent Amy a gift for her new baby girl. Calling herself, "Mother Biles". If any of this sounds familier, please reply. Amy, my Grandmother has passed and my Mother is an only child. We dont have much info. Thank You, Sheri
