Did your Edward G. have a brother James b. 1794 in NY?

This James Billington moved to Canada with his children in the 1830s, and many of his descendents moved to Michigan from Canada in the 1880s.

I don't yet know who James' parents were, nor do I know where in NY my James is from.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Hello Marge,
My Billington family came from Whalley Lancashire originally and then to Hatherton:
Married St Chads Wybunbury and as you are probably aware many Billingtons were in this area of Cheshire.
The big problem is linking them all together and am hoping you may have a link.
I have John and Elizabeth(nee Webb) Billington but little else as I thought they were off track, but maybe not.
My earliest Billington link is;
Thomas(c.1740 Whalley) and Elizabeth Billington(nee Holmes)She was from Cheshire West.(no children listed)
Their Son:Thomas Billington(08/04/1781) married St Chads Wybunbury 18/01/1820) Mary Brereton (19/07/1789 Wybunbury)
I have all their children on UK BMD certification documents including my Gt Grandparents,(certified UK BMD records here)
Son; James Billington(06/03/1831 Hatherton)Married St Chads Wybunbury (10/01/1869)Ann Nield(14/12/1842 Bunbury)
I have all his children listed; etc.
These records are from the Cheshire family Society, Crewe.
As you had John Billington in your system I am hoping a link exists here.
I have a John Billington(1829-1889)son of Thomas Billington
(1838-1914)+ wife Mary Ann Billington(b,1838,Hatherton)
This John Billington and wife are buried at Purewa cemetery Auckland New Zealand.
Jane Billington,b.1821(a daughter of Thomas-1781) married a Ernest Whitmore( and they died in Australia. See Whitmore family Wybunbury on Ancestry.com:
Beverley Hughs, Australia site on Ancestry.com.
I am hoping the link starts with data you may have.
Any luck here please ?
Barry

This Martha Billington is NOT from the Mayflower line. She was born 10 March 1818 in Bedford, TN and died 6 November 1904 in Stoddard, MO. Her father was Samuel Billington, born 1786 in North Carolina and died 1856 in Ballard, KY. Her mother was Tabitha Moore, born 1793 in North Carolina and died 1865 in Robertson, Texas.

Martha married Allen Guilliam, born 1824 in Tennessee, died unknown. They lived in Pope County, Illinois. Children: Lawson, 1843-1919; Rebecca, 1850-?; Samuel, 1852-?, and Henry, 1853-?. Thanks so much for your interest.

Linda

Re: Billington? Who in my family was born in England and when?
The name originates from 'Billington' - a village near Clitheroe, Lancashire, England. I think this is disputed in some parts as also in existence are Billington ,Bedforshire , England a village that became Little Billington and then Great Billington and then also a village in Satffordshire. All three Villages are in England.
I think the 2nd and 3rd villages were as a result of Billington's migrating - you have to remember that all good things only start in the North of England.
There is a story that involves a settlement (tun ) and a group of people called the Billingas of the 7th century known for their fighting qualities, Thereafter the spellings vary , with Johannes de Bylyngton being recorded in the 14th Century tax records of Yorkshire.
My family originally came from Lancashire , where the name exists in abundance. Elsewhere in UK there are comparatively few of us with that name.
Breifly I think that is about it. So yes your name originates here and very likely Lancashire.
There is also a small place in Limestone County Texas, named after E. J. Billington.
Your Irish accent could be the similarity between the Lancashire accent and the Irish one, though there is a strong chance one of your ancestors married an Irish person. Lancashire was the first port of call for the Irish arriving in England after the potato famine.
I see also there are a lot of Billington’s arriving in Canada from the early 1800’s and also in USA , so maybe that was your guys.

Dan (Billington)
I think it's already been pointed out but Francis is a man's name ( actually Francis Billington was famous for 'billington Sea')
I believe that his wife could be Christine and the name Christian is a mistake down to a number of factors. I wrote about my 'lack' of connection to this family of Billington's http://ancestrycentral.blogspot.com/2011/04/hangmen-and-hang...
Dan - a Billington that stayed home !

Rev J Billington St Mary’s Hidden Gem , Manchester 1837 - 1844

I visited yesterday The Church of St. Mary, Mulberry Street (The Hidden Gem), in Manchester to see where my ancestor Jane Billington was baptised in 1827.
Unable to gain access to the interior, I settled for some exterior photographs - one of the images taken reveals the Rev J Billington 1837 – 1844.
Of course, I am curious as to who he was and if there was a connection at all to my family, although he was in house some ten years after Jane’s baptism and of course, i am aware that the surname in Lancashire is more common than it is elsewhere.
I thought I might find him on the 1841 Census but a name search does not come up and I am not familiar enough to know which sub district to search ( presume he lived close to ST Mary’s)
The church web site mentions him only in passing and I cannot find anymore about him anywhere. Normally there would be something in alumni records or an obituary somewhere.
Can anyone offer any help ?

Image can be seen here http://ancestrycentral.blogspot.com/

Thanks
Dan
Billington? Who in my family was born in England and when?

My family has a whole lot of Billington's in it. My mom's name was originally Janet Billington, with her mom's name being Anne Billington.
I need to know if Billington is English (from Britain ancestry?) My mom said it was. If it is, I'm basically trying to figure out if any of my family tree was born in Britain and if so who? and when?
I live in Canada with my mother and brother and my grandma and grandpa are all here as well. We have a very faint Irish/English accent running in our family as well, so this further supports my theory that Billington is British.
If anyone can help me find out which of my family members where born over there instead of here in Canada that would be a great help as I am trying to move to England permanently and this will help me out quite a bit.

Thanks =)

Alexander Billington b circa 1796 Lancashire

In 1841 an Alexander Billington aged 45-50 was a cotton weaver living in Eaves (Broughton near Preston, NOT Habergham Eaves) with his wife Jane and 7 children, of whom the youngest was Alexander, aged 2. I think one of his other sons James aged 3 is my relation. The other children were Leonard, Elizabeth, Catherine, Henry and Fanny. Because the 1841 census rounded ages down to the nearest 5 years and only showed the place of birth as Lancashire I am having trouble tracking the family down further. Can anyone help?

In 1851 an Alexander Billington aged 55 was an agricultural labourer living in Cuddy Hill Lane, Woodplumpton with his wife Dorothy and their son Alexander aged 12 and a lodger.
Their marriage was in 1818 in Woodplumpton, so it is unlikely that this is the same father and son who were in Eaves 10 years earlier, but I have not found "my" Alexander in any other 1851 census records.

Could the family have emigrated before 1851? If so, James at least must have returned to Lancashire at a later date.

Polly Annette Willis Palmer was my great grandmother. My father Raymond Johnson, he just turned 94 (son of Ruth Palmer Johnson) grew up on the ranch with your mother Ruthanne. My dad was just talking about the ranch today and mentioned your mother's name. My family did not know we were descendants of John Billington until I read your post last week while I was researching my great grandmother. What a surprise. I understand you have talked to my brother-in-law Larry Myers about the Palmer Line. Dale Johnson
