Hi Ada, My name is Lugene Billups Duso and I am from New York State but my father's Father's family originated near Pickens, Alabama. I don't have any slavery information only that I know it existed. However, we do have the same last name and I have heard that one of my relatives did own a plantation. If you would like I would be happy to share any information that I have in my tree for your review.

Sincerely,
Lugene Billups Duso

So sorry to hear about your breast cancer and truly hope your treatment will lead you to renewed health. When you have a chance, would it be possible to share any info you might have on your Billups connections? I'm always willing to share info also, but I have virtually nothing on Arvilla and her sisters; Sybil, Minnie Z, Gracie and Effie Viola. Almost nothing on Roy Raymond also. If you prefer, you may contact me via email at mbill66781@aol.com. Thanks for your consideration and may God bless.
Mel Billups

I wanted to make a note about Fairview Cemetery. I was just there on Saturday and found that it's quite unmaintained. I was looking for some possible family of mine (Graves) and couldn't actually make my way to some of the headstones. I did get some of the pictures I wanted though. I also came across a stone stating that the cemetery had been restored in 1978. I'm figuring that's probably the last time it was touched. If I determine for a fact that some of my family is there, I'd like to go back some day and help clear it up a bit.

My grandmother, Arvilla Billups Hines died of breast cancer at age 39. After being diagnosed with breast cancer this year I learned that I have the BRAC 1 gene mutation which greatly increases a person's risk of both breast and ovarian cancer. We have established it is not from my mother's side, so is likely from my paternal grandmother Arvilla. I am making an attempt to contact any decendants of Arvilla so they can decide if they wish to be tested for this gene, and thus take preventative measures to avoid these cancers.

Would like information on Charles Billups son of John and Hetty Billups who went to Oregon. I know that he married Letitia Culbertson and they had children, she died before 1872 because when he died 4 Feb 1872 Multnomah county, OR
according to his probate.

It lists two daughters as only legal heirs:
Mary Hetty (age 15) married to a Walter Vancugen (?) and this is a guess the name was hard to read. She inherited part of his land.

Jane Ann age 6, who will be taken care of by a Gilmer Kelly.

In Jane's guardianship papers it states that on the 1st day of Jan 1882 she marries F. J. Walkley this was sworn in at Eagle Creek, Clackamas, OR.

Does anyone know where Charles is buried in Multnomah county, OR?

Does anyone know of this Walter Vancugen?

These are really the only clues that came out of the probate
and guardianship papers.

Do hame the Walkley information from Ancestry.

Diana McLean

Hi Mel,
I sent you an e-mail and invited you to view my tree. If you make either of my parents, William Leroy Watson or Myrtle Jaqueline Ward, the head person, you'll see the Billups on both sides of my family in VA, NC, and AL.
I'm sure we must be related somehow. :)
Beth

Glad to know you were able to find them. Were you able to find which Aunt/Uncle took the kids? And, you said this had to do with your grand mother, were there other kids? Could you please share her descendant tree with me? My Billups line is from a different son of the first Billups emmigrant, George Billups. However, my line did migrate from VA to NC-SC, GA, AL and on over to TX & NM. I have located a lot of Billups names associated with NC & SC that do not appear to be related, but I just can't figure out where they all fit. The real mystery for me is that there is another Billups family living near us here in Abilene, TX and his wife and my wife worked together in a small post office for a while. We've compared notes and looked at genealogy research done within our respective families, without finding a connection. But the descendants migrated along an almost identical path during the same/similar time frame as they move toward TX. I just think there is a likely connection back in NC-SC that would be really cool to solve. Even some of the family first & middle names are almost the same. Probably cousins, but I'd like to discover more. Please stay in touch when you can and let me know if you make any discoveries worth sharing. Please feel free to contact me directly at mbill66781@aol.com

Mel

I checked out the leads you gave me, and these are, indeed, the right ones. So now I know my great great grandpa's name was James and his father's name was Joseph. It's so much fun to solve a mystery. I also found out that James and his wife didn't die at the same time in an accident as the family story had been. James died in Feb. 1880 of consumption and his wife in August of 1880 of the same illness. It's very interesting that a more glamorous story evolved and made its way down to my generation. Are these people related to you, too? Thanks again for your help.
Elizabeth Smith

Thank you for the reply. I know for sure that Lee married Mary Zeritha Delaney not Mary Humphrey. I grew up looking at their pictures hanging in my grandmother's hallway. My grandmother was 4 when Mary Zeritha died, but she could remember her vividly. Mary's brother, Joe, was alive until I was about 12, I think, and I remember him talking about his sister. Also, Lee was alive until I was about 4, so I'm sure there's no doubt about who he married. I also know for sure that his parents died by the time he was 4 because on the 1880 census he was already living with his aunt and uncle. I will check out James and Elizabeth--their birthdates seem about right. I'll know if Joseph and Sophia are the right ones if they have a James and Humphrey as their children. Thank you for your help; you've given me some good leads.
Elizabeth Smith

OK, this may be a stretch or less than reliable, so, for what it's worth - - I have a Leonidas Billups (c1876[Perquimans Co., NC]- ) m Mary Humphrey. I show his parents to be James M. (1852-1880) m Elizabeth _____ (1852-1880); apparently born & died in Perquimans, Co., NC. I don't know what happened to the parents, but with both showing to have died before the child was 5 yrs old, it sounds like there might be a connection to who you are looking for. I also have the parents to be shown in the 1850 & 1870 census, AND Leonidas shown in the 1880 census - all in Perquimans Co., NC. James M. shows to be son of Joseph R. Billups (1804- ) m (2) Sophia Hudson (?White?)[born and md in Perquimans Co., NC]. Good luck.

My great grandfather, Lee (or Leonudus?) was born in 1875 in Perquimmans County, NC. He lost his parents and was raised by an aunt and uncle. He married Mary Zeritha Delaney around 1904. I'm looking for information on his parents' names and what happened to them. I'd also like to find the names of the aunt and uncle who raised him. The story was that as soon as he was old enough--around 13--he ran off with some type of wild west show or circus. He was a bareback stunt rider, apparently. Anything would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Elizabeth Smith

Searching for Billups

I have found my half sister recently thanks to this website so I am in hopes I can again, put this web site to good use to hopefully find living relatives that she can relate to on her fathers side. She was adopted and does not know anything really of her father or his parents. To not know where you came from is a grueling struggle to find yourself. So I am hoping to give her more answers to her questions.

The information. Her father is David Lee Billups who married our mother Donna Jean Fowler 21 Dec 1968. He died when she was a small child and she was then given up forcefully for adoption at the age of 7.

His parents names are Fred and Pauline Billups from what I have dug up. This could be incorrect.

If anyone can please give me any information I would be greatly appreciative. I would like for her to be able to relate and find someone that can give her pictures of her father, or give her some insight surrounding her fathers life or death.
