His mother's name was Emilie, and I know who his wife and children were, but nothing about his father nor any brothers or sisters. Since he was only 2 when he arrived, I'm thinking maybe some immigration record holds the answers... surely he didn't travel alone at that age! But all my info is from one census, no passenger lists, nor any other records of him.

He raised his 3 sons Andrew, Raymond and Carl in Glenshaw/Shaler PA, near Pittsburgh. He married a Kress.

This is a link to a website made by my cousin, maybe there is a connection somewhere to help you as from what I know the name Von Binder is not very common! http://www.geocities.com/justinnailard/familytreepage.html

John Binder of Orsett, Essex b 1793

I am trying to find out more about John Binder, my 3x great grandfather, born in 1796 in Orsett, Essex (according to the censuses he appears on). He married Lucy Ockenden (b1793 Bexhill, Sussex)in 1818 in Newington, Surrey. I have found Ockenden spelt several different ways, Orkendon & Ockendon are two variations.
They both appear on Censuses from 1841 - 1871. John died in 1873 in Hackney. I am having great trouble finding anything out about his parents or siblings. Has anyone any suggestions?

It isn't incorrect, but the same name. The spelling varies upon which document you find and I suppect that the Dommer may be an Americanized form in the same manner that BINDER was transformed into BENDER. The names you listed would be the same family.

Re: Otto Binder - From US, died in Canada

I am a writer working on a book on the murder of Otto Binder at a remote Hudson's Bay Co. trading post at Tree River on the Canadian Arctic Coast.
He was an employee of the company and a close friend of an RCMP corporal named William Doak who was murdered by the same Inuit youth in the winter of 1922.
Otto was married to an Inuit woman, with whom he had a number of children, I believe, although whether they were ever officially wed is difficult to determine.
The records of the Hudson's Bay Co. are a little slim, but I know that Otto was was born in 1881 and joined the Hudson's Bay Co. as a fur trader in 1919. The company has him listed as a single man.
It was unusual for the Bay to hire American citizens - they preferred young Scotsman - and I was hoping someone might have more details on Otto and what brought him to the Arctic.
Marc Horton

Re: Binder/Bender in Cincinnati, Ohio

Carol,
I believe you and I have corresponded before. I am descended from John Streibig, Stephen Bender's business partner in Cincinnati. I'm trying to solve a small mystery and am wondering if you know anything relevant:

John Streibig's wife was Rose Burns, and her original family consisted of the following (per 1870 census):
Sarah, wife, age 52, born Ireland, cannot read nor write.
Philip, age 12, son, born PA
Mary, age 11, born Ohio
Rosanna, age 2, born Ohio.
There appears to also have been one older sister Julia Burns who married a John Lawrence.

Here's my mystery: My deceased father once told me that Rose Burns had a sister who married Stephen Bender, and that they had a daughter Hilda. My dad's sister (also now deceased) told me separately that Stephen Bender married Lilly Burns, sister of Rose Burns. This is all supported by the will of Rose Burns' mother Sarah Burns, who lists an Ed Bender as a grandson (but no Lilly as a daughter). There is, however, no other public record that I am aware of to support this story.

So, my question.... do you have any evidence or reason to believe that your gr-grandfather Stephen Bender was married to a Lilly or Julia Burns prior to his marriage to Katherine Kuntz ??? Do you have a marriage record or marriage date for Stephen Bender and Katherine Kuntz ?

Thanks again. contact me by direct email if you prefer: hweller - at - aol.com

Worcester Telegram, Thursday 5 Apr 1973, pg 28

Southboro: William G. Binder Sr, 91, of 18 East Main Street died yesterday in Thornton Nursing Home, Northboro, where he had been a patient the past two years.

In 1898, at the age of 17, Mr Binder entered his first rodeo and won first prize for bronc riding . Another rider in that rodeo was Tom Mix, who was about Mr Binder's age, and on his way to fame as a movie star. After his retirement, he was a familiar figure at the Arthur St. Maurice's 1680 Willow Brook Farms until shortly before entering the nursing home.

He was a former deputy sheriff of Pima County, Arizona, working out of the Tucson office.

He was a life member of the Tri-State Old Time Cowboy Association and the Sanford Maine Elks.

He is survived by a son, William G. Binder, Jr., a brother, Bertram Binder of Villas, NJ, and three grandchildren. The funeral will be 11am Saturday at the Donald C. Morris Funeral Home.
Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/mohciv.htm

BINDER, RICHARD

Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps. Born: 1840, Philadelphia, Pa. Accredited to: Pennsylvania. Citation: On board the U.S.S. Ticonderoga during the attacks on Fort Fisher, 24 and 25 December 1864, and 13 to 15 January 1865. Despite heavy return fire by the enemy and the explosion of the 100-pounder Parrott rifle which killed 8 men and wounded 12 more, Sgt. Binder, as captain of a gun, performed his duties with skill and courage during the first 2 days of battle. As his ship again took position on the 13th, he remained steadfast as the Ticonderoga maintained a well-placed fire upon the batteries on shore, and thereafter, as she materially lessened the power of guns on the mound which had been turned upon our assaulting columns. During this action the flag was planted on one of the strongest fortifications possessed by the rebels.
My ancestors also came from Wuerttemburg (town unknown). My 3rd great grandfather, Johannes Binder, immigrated to the U.S. in about 1818 with his young son (b abt 1810 in Germany and named John Bender after anglicization). Don't know where they went in North America until my 2nd great grandfather married Dorice Weigel in Clark County, Indiana in 1846. Dorice and John then moved to Memphis, TN where my great grandfather, again named John, was born in 1849.
At one point I saw a discharge certificate (since lost) for my 3rd great grandfather from the army of the King of Wuerttemburg and dated 1813 as I recall.

Carol,
Constantin would have been around the age of Jacob and Catherine of Delhi Twp's children. They may have been cousins. Jacob, or Jacques had a brother named Antoine who was born on 12 Apr 1789 in Dettwiller, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. He married Catherine Creutzmeyer. They had two children that I know of Madelaine born in 29 Sept 1824 and Catherine born in 5 Nov 1822. I found these families at Familysearch.com but only got the documents for Jacob's family.

I do not have any dates concerning Ms. Binder. I have since (that posting) learned a great deal concerning my father's family. Thus far, I have not come across that name, although I found notes concerning her in my father's old papers. At this point, I'm not sure if she is actually in my family tree. I have posted several hundred names in my family tree however, so you might wish to look or search through those records in hopes of finding some matching names.

Thank you for the post, wish I could have helped you more. My research has been placed on hold currently, so all the information I have is already listed. I hope you find something useful there.

Have a great New Year.

Stephen Bender and John Streibig were indeed brothers-in-law. Stephen's brother, August Constantine was married to John Streibig's sister, Kate.

Stephen and John were also business partners for many years. Their sons took over the business from them.

I think there is another marriage between those families. I can't find it quickly. I will look when I get back to Cincinnati.

Carol

Thanks. Wonder if there were more siblings for Jacob & Antoine in Bas-Rhein. Constantine was born March 1822, so he couldn't be Antoine's son. Unless the mother got pregnant again right away & had a preemie that lived. That didn't happen too often.

Thanks.

Carol

As far as I know, there's no Albert Binder/Bender in my direct line. Most have lived in Delhi, Price Hill. But I've only been able to trace three of Constantine Bender/Binder's children's lines. It's possible that Albert is connected through one of the other five children.

For some reason, Constantine & his wife Eva are buried at St John's Cemetery, St Bernard. His burial plot card there says he died in Delhi. His widow died in Price Hill. I assume she lived with one of her children. My grandmother was raised in price hill (Stephen's daughter & Constantine's granddaughter).

Do any of these sound familiar to you?

Carol

I found that Jacob Binder born 1858 to John and Magdalena Binder changed his family name to Bender some where between 1900 and 1910. Jacob is the brother to my great grandfather Henery(Henry). Look in the 1900 cencus in Huron County Michigan under Jacob Binder then look under Emmie (Emma) Bender in the 1910 cencus. You wil seen all the childrens names and Emmas has been change to Bender. Jacob had died between 1900 and 1910 as Emmie is listed as a widow.

Hi there!
I am Lori Sostock- cousin to Patty and Harold was my great uncle! I was born and raised in Chicago- most of Sostocks were. There are a few in Wisconsin, and I think other midwest states, but haven't looked anyone up in a while.
I even trained in Family Practice at St. Joe's and delivered a bunch of babies there. But since I was born in 1969, William is a couple yrs older than me. I have 2 sisters and a brother, and my father, Donald, is Harold's nephew.
So, as far as I know, All Sostocks in the US are related!
Gloria was my close 2nd cousin, and married Donny Binder a few years before she died.
There are not many of us... it is a rare name indeed.
Would love to make contact, looks like we are second cousins!
Nice to meet you !
Lori Beth Sostock, MD,
your cousin!
