My name is Katherine Goodman and I have a great deal of information about Karl BIPPES (Charles BIPES). This is a lengthy message but I believe you will appreciate the information. My working database can be found at:
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=kcgoodmanMy great great grandfather (Johann Adam RAETZ/RAITZ) and Karl BIPES/BIPPES were married to sisters.
John Adam RAITZ to Elisabeth Ernestine SAUTER
Charles BIPES to Ernestine Christina SAUTER
From RAITZ genealogy research I can tell you the following:
1847, Spring
John Adam RAETZ and family of Gondelsheim District of Bretten, Grand Duchy of Baden, left the old country via Bretten arriving in New York after a 45 day trip aboard a sailing vessel. They proceeded by way of the Hudson River and Erie Canal to Buffalo, New York and then to Chicago, Illinois via a riverboat on the Great Lakes (the Lake Migration Route). (From History of Buffalo County, cannot identify if BIPES family traveled with them)
1847 January 16
SAUTER family arrived in New York City having departed from deHavre, France aboard the Duchess d'Orleans. Charles BIPES and Ernestine Christina SAUTER BIPES were not on this ship manifest.
1848 July 10
RAITZ family arrived in Stephenson Co from Chicago. Went to a location 7 miles from Freeport (Wadam Grove), Stephenson Co, Illinois, where they remained for 3 years.
1848
Jacob SAUTER and family (parents of the SAUTER sisters) from Gondelsheim, Baden, GERMANY in 1848 and settled near Galena, Illinois. 7 years later to Minnesota near Cologne, Carver Co. (From History of Carver Co, Minnesota)
1850 Federal Census, Illinois, Stephenson Co, Town of Waddams
RAITZ (Johan Adam RAITZ & Elisabetha Ernestine SAUTER RAITZ)
BIPES (Carl BIPES & Ernestine Christina SAUTER BIPES)
SAUTER (Johann Jakob SAUTER & Justina Christina BURKHARDT SAUTER & children)
1851
Hearing of the cheap land to be obtained in Buffalo Co, Wisconsin, and the surrounding section, RAITZ and BIPES resolved to try their fortune in this then unsettled territory, and in May, 1851, they and their families landed at the old Stone House, about a mile and a half from the settlement of what is now Fountain City, which then consisted of only 7 houses, being hardly worthy of the name of a village.
RAITZ burnt the first lime at Fountain City (he was a mason), which sold at $1.00 a barrel. At Wild's Landing three families were crowded into one house until after a considerable time they made a path to Holmes' Landing, from which they started claim hunting. (From History of Buffalo County)
1851 October
RAITZ & BIPES built a little house on the bluff on what is now SCHUMACHER's farm and passed a very severe winter in it. Here they had the not very welcome visits of Indians and were often scared, but never hurt. RAITZ ascribes this escape to providence. Lost his cattle in Spring and had generally a hard time of it. (From History of Buffalo County)
1852
RAITZ secured 80 acres of wild land, on which he began operations in pioneer fashion by building a log house, 16 by 24 feet in size. He also put up log barns and with an ox team entered upon the arduous task of developing a farm. His wagon was home-made, the wheels being cut from the trunk of a tree. (From History of Buffalo County)
1853
BIPES was first resident of the township of Buffalo Township, Buffalo Co, Wisconsin along with his brother-in-law John Adam RAETZ who settled in Holmes Landing (now Fountain City). Within the present limits Charles BIPES was the first settler, first on the bluff, afterwards in the valley, which was named after him, but by a corruption of the name is now called Pieper's Valley. He came with his brother-in-law, Adam RAETZ, in 1851. In 1853 at the first election RAETZ was chosen District Attorney and BIPES was chosen Clerk of the County Board of Supervisors, but declined and never served feeling he lived too far from Holmes Landing (Fountain City) which was 12 miles by river, and has not lived in this county for many years. (From History of Buffalo County)
1855
SAUTER father and sons migrated from Stephenson Co, Illinois to Carver Co, Minnesota.
1856
Later SAUTER mother and daughters came up the river by boat as far as Carver.
