Update on Birch Family from Staffordshire/Lancashire - Joshua, Enoch, William

Since my last post I have discovered that my 4x g-gdad was called Joshua Birch who was born in or around Reapsmoor (Ropesmoor) Staffordshire. Joshua had an older brother named Enoch and their father was a William Birch. Both brothers, Joshua and Enoch moved to Hyde around 1840 I assume to find work in the cotton industry and both settled here and started families of their own. I am however curious to discover more about their father William and who there mother was as I am struggling to find any baptism records and so am unable to go further back - any links or suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Where was James Robert BIRCH in the 1881 census?

Seeking information to where James Robert BIRCH, age 6, was in the 1881 census.
James Robert BIRCH b. 22 Apr 1875, Holborn, Middlesex, England.
Father:
James BIRCH b. 09 Jun 1853 Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England.
According to 1861, 1871 & 1881 census James BIRCH was living in Clerkenwell.
Mother:
Jane BRADSHAW b. 1854 Islington, Middlesex, England.
James BIRCH and Jane BRADSHAW m. 21 Feb 1875, Holborn, Middlesex, England. Their son James Robert BIRCH was born shortly afterwards in April.
The 1881 census indicates James BIRCH was still living in Clerkenwell and married. There is a Jane present in the house, however she is 19, and defined as a sister. Can I assume this Jane is in fact James's wife, if so her age should be 27. There is no mention of James's son: James Robert BIRCH. I have searched everywhere and cannot locate James Robert BIRCH in the 1881 census. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Birch family with links to Cheshire/Nottingham and Derbyshire

I am doing some work on the Birch side of my family history and would appreciate any help or new leads. My great grandad was Arthur Cecil Birch and he was born in Nottingham in 1893 but by 1901 census was living in Hyde, Cheshire with his 3 siblingsFlorence, Alice and Frank. His parents were Thomas Edward Birch and Clara. Thomas was a post office clerk. Thomas' father was William born 1845 in Hyde and his mother was Sarah A born 1844 in Leicestershire. William was also a post office clerk and they had 5 sons that i know of, the oldest being Thomas Edward. Going further back I have found William on the 1861 census as a 17 year old cotton piercer living with his brothers Thomas, Charles, Alfred and sister Ellen. Their fathers name in illegiable on the census but it looks like Joseph born 1820 in Cheshire and their mother was Elizabeth born in Derbyshire in 1816. I can't seem to get further back than this and so if any one has any more information i would be most appreciative! Thanks

Birch - Firstbrook and Birch - Shropshire connections

John Birch who witnessed John Mucklestone Firstbrook's will at St. Erth in Cornwall 1813 was I think his brother-in-law having married his sister Hannah at Kinver Staffs16 Feb 1770.
There are two recorded a Baptisms of Richard Firstbrook Birch, 13 March 1825 and 7 August 1854 both in St. Erth.
I have evidence that John Birch and John Firstbrook were iron founders recruited from the "Black Country" of the English midlands to start a foundry in Cornwall. Part of Shropshire makes up the Black Country together with part of Worcestershire and Staffs.
Doug

ANDERSON2 BAILEY (RICHARD1) was born Abt. 1815 in Lynnville, Tennessee, and died February 1870 in Pope County, Arkansas. He married (1) ERMA DOWDY February 04, 1836 in Maury Co, Tennessee. He married (2) WINNIFRED WILCOXSON April 13, 1853. She was born 1820, and died Bef. 1868 in Pope County, Arkansas. He married (3) ARKSHAW FORD October 22, 1868 in Pope County, Arkansas. She was born Abt. 1823.

notes for Anderson Bailey
"Fifty years ago in Pope" written on December 31, 1908 by M. H. VanZandt of Cove, AR.

"This being Christmas Eve night, my mind runs back half a century of more to my childhood and boyhood days, when Pope county was a little more than a wilderness.

We landed in Pope County in the fall of 1847 and settled in the Boiling Springs community in the northern part of the county. The people who lived in that community at that time were Ed Campbell, Clark Epperson, whose father lived on what is now known as the Houston Birch place, the Widow Ridge, Widow Sullivan, Widow McCloud, Jim McCracken, Nathan Rowland, George Rowland and Jim Gilihand, who married old uncle John Rowland's widow. They left that county when I was small and I have never heard of them since. She had a son by her first husband whose name was Polk Rowland, who was my age". Besides those I have named were Ben Rose, John Cordel, Green Cordell,, Copeland, Sam Maloney, ANDERSON BAILEY, old Stitha Linton, Jim Sinclair, Chesty Turnbow, Joe Turnbow, John Gray, Helms, Pennington, Bill McCowen and his father, Bill Johnson, Jim Bruton, Ira Brown and the others. A good many of these people left that county directly after we moved in there. There was "Governor Hades", as we called him, who lived on the place now owned by D. M. Griffin. There was also Lee Langford, Ben Langford, Adam Ross, Allen Price, which includes about all the in that neighborhood at that time."
Notes for WINNIFRED WILCOXSON:

John Birch b.1819 Ireland d.1886 USA

Found passenger list for ship Josephine with the entire family listed. Can't read most of the names. The complete list is in a book titled Passenger Arrivals in New York Port 1820-1829. They are listed on page 89 but this page is not part of the preview available on the internet. Does any body have this book and can give me the names of this Birch Family. I'm stuck on John Birch and do not know his father's name so I can continue my research. Any additional information would be appreciated.

Mabel Barber Birch in Coldwater MI

I am trying to find anyone who might be related to Mabel Barber Birch. She was born on January 11, 1869 in Branch County Michigan to Charles H. Barber and Violetta Z. Sisson Barber. She married William H. Birch on March 9, 1889. They had many children but only one girl whose name is Laura. The family lived in Coldwater Michigan. I have many documents on this family but cannot find when and where Mabel died. Mabel had a brother, my great Uncle Harry Barber, who also lived in Coldwater. Charles H. Barber, father of Mabel and Harry, died and Violetta married Louis Doty. Together they had two children, my grandfather Carl Sisson Doty and my great aunt Ruby Arlene Doty. No one in our family was aware that Mabel existed until I found her. I remember my Uncle Harry and wife Aunt Eva, but was far too young to think of asking questions. If anyone knows of this family, most especially Mabel, I would love to hear from you.

I have recently found some family letters wriiten by a Thomas Birch (and his mother (Maria Birch) I think) dating from 1865-1874.

The addresses given as far as I can read is Campbell Street Camperdown, Providence Cottage Camperdown & also Dulwich Grove? Petersham all near Sydney in those days.

Thomas refers to his family coming over, so I presume there is some sort of a line in the Birch name.

Thomas' DOB is 11th March 1819.

Would be graeful if anyone could help!

Thanks,

Lisa Clarke

I, like others, have run out of paper trails to check. I am into the 1800s and before. I am asking all Birch variations to think about having your Y-DNA checked and posting it on ysearch. That way we could all have a database to compare results. Although we can't find paper connections, maybe we can skip that process and connect through genetics. Mine is on ysearch as: 35VRW Birch, Zanesville, Muskingum co, Ohio. Thanks, Thomas Birch
Hope to see you all on ysearch!!!
P.S. I recommend the 67 marker test, the more the better.

Descendants of Charles J. GEYER and Clara May BIRCH 1860's Ohio

I am looking for descendants of the above named couple. Charles J. GEYER was born in PA, ca 1865. Clara May BIRCH (b 10/1865 Dayton, OH) is the daughter of John BIRCH (b 1836 Manchester, England) and Ellen BRADY (b 1845 Dayton, OH).

I know that Charles and Clara had 3 children - Mercedes Grace (b 1889 Dayton - d 1986 CT), Bertram Birch (b 1891 Dayton - d 1970 NY), and Mary A (b 1894 Dayton - d 1981 CT).

Mercedes and Mary did not marry, as far as I can tell. Bertram Birch GEYER married Beulah DELONG and had 4 boys - Robert Charles, John Rockwell, Richard Delong and James Birch.

My interest in this family is gaining information on the Birch relatives. John was 1 of 10 children and when he died in 1909, he left his sister Jane as the sole survivor of the line. When she died there was a notice in the Dayton paper announcing her death - I am guessing provided by her neice Clara May (BIRCH) GEYER.

Any information would be extremely appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Birch in Burslem, Staffordshire

I am trying to find the parents of my great grandfather John Birch, born around 1854 in England. His father was Charles Birch, a shoemaker, according to John's marriage certificate.
In the 1881 census, there is a Charles Birch & family living in Burslem, Staffordshire. This Charles is a shoemaker, and the oldest child still at home works in the pottery trade, just as my great grandfather did (before & after emigrating to the U.S. in 1882). Does anyone have information about this family in Burslem?
Any help much appreciated.
Denise, Ohio

I am researching the Birch family, perhaps two different branches.

One that owned the farm where marymount University now sits in Arlington, owned by Caleb Birch, sold to Mary Hall.
Caleb had a sister Columbia Birch that married Robert Harrison, their daughter Frances Harrison married Basil Hall.
Basil's sister Mary Hall, bought Calebs farm to add to her own next door, and is buried with the Birches on the university grounds.

Annother is the family of Jacob Birch. He married a daughter, Frances "FANNIE" of Basil Hall and Frances Harrison. As cousins often married, this may be tha case.

Any Connections? This is all 1800s.

I am looking for information on my great grandfather Charles Edward Walford. He was born in Ipswich, England either in 1897 or 1896. His mother was Mary Jane Birch who was born Feb 1, 1863 also in Ipswich, England. I believe Charles was born with the family name Birch but later adopted by Charles Walford who married Mary Jane Birch. He had a sister named Mary Jane Elizabeth Birch who has James Birch listed as her father on her marriage record.
Can you confirm Charles' birth and who his father was?

Daniel Gilbeau
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

I am looking for the DOD of my great aunt Jane Birch who left St Erth, Cornwall to live in the US in July 1923. She went with her daughter & son-in-law Elizabeth & Harry JOHNS, they lived in Chestnut St, Kearney, NJ. In the the 1930 census Jane is still living with them but she is 84 so I would think she would have died in the 1930's. However I can't find any record of her death. Are there newspaper archives on line from that era & location? Any help would be appreciated.
Esther
NZ

Olga Crandall Birch, born 1908 in Washington, DC

I am looking for descendants of Olga Crandall Birch. She was the daughter of Harry M. Crandall and Katie Crandall. She was born in 1908 in Washington, DC, and had a daughter named Wilma Birch. The Crandall/Birch families lived in Waterfield, Virginia.

I am researching and writing a book about the Knickerbocker Theater Disaster which occurred on January 28, 1922. During a blizzard, the roof of the theater collapsed onto the audience below, killing 98 and injuring 133 men, women, and children.

Olga Crandall Birch's father was a well-known film exhibitioner during the 1910s and 1920s. I would like to be as historically accurate as possible and hope that descendants of the Birch and Crandall families might have some information and photos of Harry Crandall's amazing film exhibition career.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Birch family update

I recently discovered some additional BIRCH/BURCH names that may be related to Eunice Birch. I found in the 1835 State Census for Miami County, Ohio the following:

0344 Birch, Zebulin
0349 Birch, Bartin
0350 Bard, William
0351 Birch, Joseph

William Bard's wife was Eunice Birch. I believe there must be a relationship between the above Birch's to Eunice (Birch) Bard. If any of the above Birch's familiar, please contact me. I need some help piecing this family together.

William Kerr and Margaret Jane Miller Kerr

I am searching for the ancestors of William Kerr and his wife Margaret Jane Miller who purchased land in Wayne County Ohio in 1813. According the the Land Patent from the United States to William Kerr, R. P. 540,
Vol. 4, #278: William Kerr of Washington County, Pennsylvania acquirdd the land in 1813. We hbelieve that William and Margaret moved from Washington County, PA to Ohio at that time.

According to the records on April 15, 1840, Pages 559 & 560, Vol. 6, Holmes Co., Ohio: William Kerr and
his wife Jane of Holmes County, Ohio, sold to Peter Croco of Holmes Co., Ohio, for two thousand dollars the northwest quarter of Section 10 Range 13, Township 13.

After the sale of the land, they moved to Indiana where they both passed away in the spring of 1850.

We are trying very hard to locate their ancestors, however the trail seems to end in Hanover Township in Wahsington county, PA.

Do you ghave any connections to this famil?

Birch Family of Margate

I am looking for information about the Birch family who lived in Margate, Kent. The earliest record I have of them is Thomas Sidders Birch who was born either 1820 or 1821 who married Eliza Pritchard and moved to Margate, where they had five children. Thomas is my great great great grandfather, and I would dearly love to hear from anyone else who is researching this branch.
