My great grandfather was George Talbert Birch, He came to New Zealand as a young man from Ballybean Northern Ireland and cleared and started farming in the southland region where I live
my mother was named elenor Hume Johnston Birch ,I have family silver which was from a major set that my also named george Tabert Birch grandfather handed on to the three sisters and three brothers of whom the three sisters and one brother still live, My mother talks of a Dianesha Johnston who married into the family.I will have to talk with my mother more about it,But I remember her saying her father had to go back to the old country to settle estate matters in 1929 and that he had visted his cousin who then was the primeminister of northern Ireland His sirname was Andrews, and I know mum talks sometimes that another relative was involved with the design of the Titanic and i have a book written in physics by him, It seems the family of birches were wealthy and mixed with only the top familys in marriage, Also here in New Zealand they were again married into well to do familys and highly regarded

Re: Barnabas Birch, Shipwright, Essex b 1840

Hi Lynn
Thank you so much for reply. My connection to Barnabus is that he is my paternal grandfather's great uncle (I think that's right, it gets complicated after a couple of generations). It appears that the spelling of the surname on my fathers side of the family changed from BIRCH to BURCH around the time of my great grandfather Walter Burch born around 1873. I wonder if that was deliberate or just a spelling mistake that continued? Thanks for the info about Barnabus. It appears that the link with boats continued, as my great grandfather was a sailor, also my grandfather had a brother whose occupation was a Boatman. In fact my father does have a brief childhood memory of being taken onto a boat by family. Unfortunaley his parents split when he was very young & he knows nothing else of his father's family history. In fact that was part of the reason I started the family tree to try to get some background information.
It seems that the Birch/Burch family come from Essex almost exclusively. We even lived in Essex for a number of years ourselves, years before we knew anything about the family history. I don't need anymore information about Barnabus for the moment, as I'm trying to found out more information on Walter George Burch born 12 Jan 1902 (that's Barnabus'great nephew - my grandfather). It's proving to be trickey as I can't found a record of his death on any of the records at the moment.
Anyway thanks once again & please fel free to contact me again with more info or if there's anything I can help with.
regards
Sarah

Hello, Sarah, I think Barnabas was a member of my mother's family. They are from Grays (although originally from North Essex) and the story goes that Uncle Barny took a boat overseas and was never heard of since. He was my mother's great uncle, if I get the story right. Yes, Orsett is a small village near Grays in Essex. I live not far from there and my parents still live in Grays so if you wanted me to check the Orsett register, please let me know. I know my mother's aunt used to talk about Uncle Barny as a quite mischievous character...I wonder if it is the same man? Let me know if you'd like more information.
Best wishes
Lynn

Thank you! I am trying to piece together my mother-in-law's family and have traced one branch back to the family of Thomas and Ann (Turner) Birch (grandparents of Bertram Birch Geyer). Thomas and Ann had 10 children. John, father of Clara - who married Charles Geyer, (your branch) - is the brother of Jane (my branch) who married John Brady. I have a bunch of info on the Birches - but am looking for more on who this John Brady was.... I don't believe he was related to the Ellen Brady that John married - but I could be wrong. So, I guess if you have any info on that area - it would be great!

John Birch/Burch and Samantha Clowers Washington Parish, LA 1830

I am looking from information on John Birch who is on the 1830 Washington Parish LA census. I believe he married Samantha Clowers about 1827. There were 2 children John Richard born 1832 and Mary P (Precilla?) born 1829.

Samantha married second a Bickham son of Abner and Dicey Bickham. They are neighbors on the 1830 census. In 1850 Samantha is listed as S. Miles with these children in the household Mary P Birch age 20, John R age 18, Dicey E. Bickham age 16, Abner age 14, E Miles age 6, Rebecca age 3, John Burkhalter age 19.

I believe John is the son of Richard Birch/Burch and his first wife whose given name may have been Precilla. Richard was born in GA abt 1783. He married second Fanny Vardeman.

What happened to John - did he die before 1833?

Any help in sorting this line would be appreciated.

Looking for Thon BIRCH. In the 1871 England Census he is 53 years old, born 1818 St Pancras, Middlesex. His brother is James BIRCH, born 1823 St Pancras, Middlesex. I cannot find Thon BIRCH in earlier census or his birth around 1818. I assume "Thon" is a nickname for "Anthony" however I cannot find anything that matches up.

Can anyone help me?

Jamima (nee Alford) real name is spelt Jemima confirmed from the children's birth certificates. Children are Emily (9yrs), James (8yrs), Amelia (5 yrs) and William (1 yr). Also living at the address is a Eliza Birch (18yrs). I'm not sure if she is related or not.

I would like to find when James and Jemima/Jamima were married, which I assume will be before 1851 as I am really struggling.

Can anyone help me locate the marriage please.

Her siblings were Hiram T (1876), William Robert (1879), Kylynn (1879), Ella (1881), Johnnie (1886), Charles (1891), Thomas (1895) and Robert Lee (1898).

I remember years ago around 1960-61, Fannie showed me a picture of her grandfather who was a full blooded Cherokee chief wearing his full head dress. I can find George Birch coming to America, arriving Aug 30, 1828 on the ship Josephine. Found out he settled in Pleasnt Valley New York in Dutchess County. I'm looking for any information on his and his wife's parentage. His wife was Rachel Campbell b.1785 d. 10 Jul 1865 Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, NY, USA, also came over with him on the ship Josephine.

Hi
My name is Sarah.According to the information I have been able to trace & believe you me it has been difficult. The Barnabus Birch I have listed in my family tree is the brother of my great great grandfather Wm Zachariah Birch. My search has been made very difficult as it appears the spelling of the name changed to BURCH at some point later on. I'm not sure if all the family members name changed to the 'UR' version. And also if this was just a spelling error. In any case case it stuck with my part of the family as I'm a BURCH.This change may have occurred around the 1870's, but who knows maybe it has happened before?
Anyway back to Barnabus, the info I have is a Barnabus Birch born 1840 at Rowhedge Street,East Bergholt,Essex.Accoding to the 1861 census his occupation was Ship's Carpenter, & later in 1891 as Shipwright. His wife is listed as Lydia. I have the date of death as 1915 in Orsett,Grays,England. I believe Grays is in Essex, but you will need to check. Hope this helps. Please let me know if you would like more info. I will try if I can, but as Barnabus is my ancestors brother I have not researched to a great degree.
regards
Sarah

Hi,

I too am researching the Birch family from Staffordshire. I have got as far back as my 5x g grandad William Birch who had son's Enoch and Joshua that I know of but am sure their are many more children. I am unsure of who William was married too but I have information on both Enoch and Joshua. They originated from Reapsmoor, Fawfieldhead and I am descended from Joshua who moved to Hyde around 1840. Do we have any links?
