Hi Denise,
Great to hear from you after all these years.

We have information and contacts for Alf's descendants in both USA and Paraguay.

The Birks family in Australia have strong connections with the Thomas family. They married 3 of the daughters of William Kyffin Thomas.

I can be contacted at david.birks@monash.edu

David

My Alfred James Birks was the son of George Napier Birks and Helen Rosetta Thomas from Adelaide, South Australia. His grandparents were George Vause Birks and Hannah Napier (who had immigrated to Australia in 1853 from Manchester, Lancashire, England)

I believe Alfred died in Paraguay but his three children and their American born mother returned to the USA in 1914.

Good luck with your research.
Hi Pamela
Unbelievably I have connected with the a Brian relative....I never thought I would as my dad was sent to a childrens home in 1942! She's my second cousin ... I am thrilled. Probelm is we cannot find any information on them in the 1911 census....not sure why....maybe they moved out of Staffordshire....but I really don't think so. Not finding anything on any Brian family member is frustrating the h*** out of me!!!! Would you be able to check for me? I'm asking a lot but I've come so far especially with the info you provided me earlier.
Thank you
Jackie Powell

My husband has connections to the Birks family of South Australia.
Alfred James Birks (1874-1916) was born in Adelaide, South Australia. His parents and siblings moved to Paraguay to create a Utopian colony based on socialist principles in the late 1890s. When the rest of the family returned to Australia a few short years later, when the colony failed, Alfred remained in Paraguay, continuing his dentistry practice. I believe he lived for a time in Pennsylvania and married there. He returned to Paraguay and died there.
I am very interested to learn more about his wife and children and any other relevant information
I am trying to locate Henry Birks in the 1901 census and the 1911 census - his father was John Birks, I haven't found his mother yet. He had a couple of sisters named Alice and Elsie. I am not having any luck. I have his marriage entry (1921) he married Elsie Brian that shows his father as John. One of the witnesses was a Gertrude Maude Birks. One of the Henry's and Elsie's children was Thomas Henry Birks born 1920 (approx.). I'm now wondering if Henry Birks was Henry Thomas or also Thomas Henry. In the death index (1929-my aunt confirmed this is when he died.)he's listed as Henry.
Jackie (nee Birks)
Hello Pam - sorry for the late response - family commitments.Thank you for the "Emily" stories (both posts!) and on reflection probably the best way to move this forward is to give you my email - draw@draw.karoo.co.uk - Will spend some time this pm organising/scanning photos which considering their age look in pretty good condition. Will forward your comments on to Alfreds daughter(my mother a very young 86 )she thought a great deal about her grandad!
Best regards lindsay ward

Hi again Lindsay, I happily discovered your reply earlier today when I came home and I typed out a reply, but unfortunately I am quite useless on the computer, other than to just type a straighforward letter or send an e.mail (the latter of which is not always successful)I lost what I was typing, so I am trying again. I do not have Ian standing at the back of me, so anything could happen. O.K. let's try. Emily Stamp was born 1867, so unless there was a atillbirth inbetween, she is the second eldest? She will not appear on the 1881 census because she was working as a servant, so not at home then. Fred Fairbotham was a widower and already had a few children when she married him. From what I have gathered from other sources, this marriage was a disaster, perhaps even violent and so she left him and her two children,my grandma Emily Dorothy (1895) 4 yrs old and her sister Dora (1889)aged 18 months.I cannot quite forgive her for deserting my beloved grandma. Fred married yet a third time and my gandma had a step-mother, who, according to my mother, who vaguely remembers her, was a lovely person. Anyway, Fred and Emily did have a third child inbetween Emily and Dora (I think, purely from memory) a little boy whom they named Alfred. I believe he was named after your mother's grandfather and Emily's brother. I have a photograph that my mother had in a box in a cupboard (as one does)and it shows a lady of about 75-80 yrs of age and I think it is either Cordellia or Emily Stamp. Actually whoever it is, is a dead ringer for me -older of course. I am so eager to see the photographs you have and I await your instructions on how you want to do this. You say you are not happy divulging your e.mail address? Lovely to hear from you.Incidentally one of my daughter's names is Lindsay, spelt the same way!
Pam Rhodes

Hi again Lindsay, Just happened to be near the computer and I chanced seeing a reply and luckily I had one from you. O.K. by 1881 census, Emily was working as a servant, so she will not appear at that house then. Fred Fairbotham (my mother's grandfather was widowed and already had a good few children when he married Emily. Emily and Fred had a little boy who sasdly died at birth who was named Alfred and I would think Emily named him after her brother - your mother's grandfather. I have a very old photograph that was amongst a collection my grandma had and when she died, my mother took most of them. I do not know who this photograph is of, but I do suspect it to be either Cordelia Birks or Emily Stamp, due to the style of clothes. The photograph was taken in Hull also. Actually, whoever it is, bears a startling resemblance to myself, albeit older! I would dearly love to see your photographs if you can send copies via the computer. Ian is the only one who can do this at this end, as I am quite hopeless on the computer. I would require your e.mail address though I believe? Emily it would appear from what we have possibly found (though not 100% sure) lived to be a good age. I wonder if she looks at all like your mother's grandfather? She was born in 1867, so possibly the second eldest, unless there were any stillbirths inbetween? I too am very interested in the Stamps and they have proved quite illusive for me up until now. I am clinging to the thought that Emily had very good reason to leave my grandma (Emily Dorothy) at 4 yrs of age
and her younger sister Dora at the age of 18 months. I have discovered that the marriage between her and Fred Fairbotham was a perhaps disastrous marriage and who knows maybe violent. Yet, I cannot quite forgive her for leaving my poor grandma motherless. Alfred was of course my grandma's uncle, I wonder if he played any part in her life?
Ann Atkinson was born in Doncaster incidentally.
I wonder if you can shed any light on a female who lived in the same household as James and Cordellia but whose name we ccannot decipher. From memory she is around 60+ and is registered as .........(?) Birks, we cannot read the first name at all.

Hello Pam.Received your post last night but didnt have time to put something together. Can confirm that my main interest with the "Stamps" is Alfred (bn 1864)the eldest child I think of John and Anne and my mothers grandfather.Am trying to piece together Alfreds siblings as I type. The Hull 1871 census (Mason st)lists a Alfred ,Emilie/ly? and Anne/ie? - by the 1881(Upper Union st) its extended to include John, Elizabeth Ellen and Ada but Emilie/ly isnt mentioned.Hmm not sure whats happening here? - Anyhow will try and put something a liitle more sensible together once ive sifted through this mass of paper. Not sure if i can throw any fresh light on Emilie/ly but we will see -ive got some photos of (I think??)John and Anne Stamp possibly 1880s??Would have liked to contact you direct but not sure about posting my email address on this site ???? Anyway I will be in touch - best regards lindsay ward

Hi Lindsay,
Ibelieve we are related. James Stamp and Cordelia Birk had a son John Stamp who was my gt. Gradma's father. He married
Ann Atkinson (1842) and they had a daughter (amongst other siblings) Emily Stamp. Emily Stamp (1867) married a Fred Fairbotham and they had my grandma Emily Dorothy Fairbotham (my mother's mother). Here it gets very complicated because Emily left Fred (seems to have just deserted the family) leaving my grandma without a mother at the age of 4.I was very close to my grandma, but unfortunately she died when I was only 12, so I never discussed her family or background with her. It is a desire to trace what happened to Emily and to find out why she left my grandma that it has nearly become an obsession! I believe, but not sure, that Emily was descended from Spanish blood. My mother once told me that her mother (my grandma) told her and my auntie that her mother was spanish? My mother has certainly got the dark tanned skin. My Neice also is very dark and has very dark eyes. My friend Ian and I have traced many of my ancestors over a few years. We have intended for years to go to Beverley Family History Centre to find out more, but it just keeps getting put off. What do you know about the Stamps or Birks? Pam Rhodes

I am a descendant of Sarah (Birks) Wilson, whose husband was Levi Wilson my great, great, grandfather. Levi died and left Sarah with two sons, John and Cal Wilson. Widowed with 2 children, Sarah moved to Iowa to be near her brothers Riley and Thomas Birks already living in Portsmouth and Persia, Iowa. Sarah bought a farm between Logan and Persia which John bought from her. My grandfather, father were born on that farm. I was born on another farm near that farm, and grew up in Persia. I have a photo of Jeremiah if you don't have one.

I have just read your inquiry regarding the relationship of Richard, Sarah, and Jeremiah Birks. I inherited several old documents of the Buckles and Birks families, of whom I am a descendant. I have Indenture papers that mention Sarah (Birks) Finders, that were included in my Birks papers. She was the sister of Jeremiah Birks. She married Boston Finders, an early settler of (then) Sangamo County, IL. At one time, Boston and Sarah lived approx. 5 miles from Jeremiah. Richard, a brother of Jeremiah, is buried next to Jeremiah in Steenbergen Cemetery, Logan County, IL.

Fishing, ever fishing. While fishing (reviewing) on ancestry tonight, I saw this ancient post. I can't remember if you received your answer or not. Feel free to email me at birchtree@live.com .

Dave

Birks from Pudsey, Yorkshire, UK

Hello - I'm looking for any info to do with the Yorkshire line of the Birks family. There seem to be so many! My earliest ancester is Richard Birks (b.1768) who married Mary Bowes, then down to his son Richard (b.1793)who married Mary Roberts (b.1796). Lots more people below that, but I've reached a dead end so far...

Also info about the Arthur Birks/Selina Jones connection would be great!

Cheers,

Aaron Birks

Hi Jan. They have a photo of Jeremiah and and Mary Birks headstone online at Find A Grave:

Jeremiah Birks
Birth: Oct. 21, 1842
Death: Jul. 10, 1905

Mary A.
