Hello Marjorie,

I tries to contact you by email a year ago regarding your post mentioning Alfred Gilbert, my wife's grandfather, but received no reply. I have just noticed your query regarding Robert Burney and while I have no more information on ancestors I will mention that there was another brother, William Barney junior, born about 1801. He appears consistently in the censuses from 1841 to 1871, as a mariner in 1841, then for 20 years as a sawyer and in 1871 as a seaman merchant navy. He died in 1875. in 1851 Robert's daughters Frances Elizabeth and Susan Ann were with him while their father was at sea and their mother was with her mother Elizabeth McLevey, mistranscribed as Leng. I have a list of Robert's ships and voyages researched by a descendant of Susan Ann.

Regards, Jack Trappe

Birnie Ireland and Australia

I am trying to find a connection between an E. L. Birnie who wrote a letter in 1915 from Newtown Australia and John "Jack" Stewart of Killygullib, Tamlaght O'Crilly Parish, Co. Londonderry, Ireland. I am not familiar with the name Birnie in TOC but do have quite a bit on the Stewarts of the area. Jack Stewart died at Gallipoli in 1914 and in his records is this letter stating E.L. is his cousin. I know this is a long shot but if anyone has any leads or suggestions for me it would be greatly appreciated.
Barbara Braswell

Hi,

I guess that your William Birnie could have been buried in either Peathill or Rathen churchyards. I have a map of burials at Peathill but not Rathen.
My family has strong connections with Birnies from the Pitsligo parish, but I have not been able to quite fix on which village they may have come from.

Good luck in your search.

David Strachan
Hi, William

I am looking for a list of people interred at Peathill Kirk Cemetery near Rosehearty, Scotland. Upon visiting Rosehearty/Fraserburgh, my grandmother Margaret Blackhall Watt said we had relatives buried there. It was a very small cemetery and she said people were buried atop other people.

My great grandmother Jane Elizabeth Birnie Williamson was born in Rathen/Rosehearty aprox 1854. She is buried in a cemetery near Rosehearty but I don't know its name.

Thank you for any clues, Margaret mistymoonlite4@aol.com

I am trying to trace the family of Alex & Marilyn Birnie. Little is known of Alex however Marilyn is the daughter of George Ernest Coster and Mary Wilson. George was born circa 1905 so I would think that Marilyn would have been born circa 1930-35. Alex and Marilyn had a son Stephen and it is believed that they moved from Edinburgh to one of the Home Counties in England possibly due to Alex's employment. Marilyn would be my 2nd Cousin. If anyone can give me a lead I would be most grateful.

JANE BIRNIE MYSTERY

My grandmother claimed to be Jane Birnie born around 1880 [26 years old in 1906] at her marriage to Robert Watson in Glasgow. She claimed to be the daughter of John Birnie [Deceased Farm Servant] and Jane Birnie ms Davidson [deceased].

I can find no trace of her birth, her parents marriage etc.

Family stories suggest she was illegitimate and, like her husband Robert, was from the Banff area [perhaps Whitehills or Portsoy].

Grateful for any help, steer, bright ideas or commiseration.

Colin

I have only recently started researching my family tree and I came across this thread. My line comes down through James brother John born 17/2/1834 to John Birnie (b in Cruden 1809) and Elspet Hall (b. Monquiter 1807). I'd be grateful for anything you might have that would help me. My email address is frank.dunbar@which.net or frank.dunbar@tiscali.co.uk

Thanks in anticipation.

Frank

James Birnie born 30/3/1843 in Peterhead to John Birnie (born in Cruden in 1809) and Elspet Hall (born in Monquiter in 1807). James siblings were:
John b. 17/2/1834 (my line)
Charles b. 1835
Mary b. 1837
Martha b. 22/6/1839
Elspet b. 28/3/1841
Alexander b. 5/3/1848

Hope this helps. I have more details about the wives and progeny of James' siblings if that would be of interest. I'm fairly new to genealogy and haven't looked up James parents in the Edinburgh Registry Office yet but when i do, I'll pass on anything else I get.

I didn't know James had gone to the US, so anything you can give me about him would be appreciated.

Frank

John & Margaret (BIRNIE) (KIMBLE) BARTLOW: Kane Co., IL -> Urbana, IL -> Springfield, MO

Seeking information on John and Margaret J. (BIRNIE) (KIMBLE) BARTLOW. Margaret KIMBLE married John BARTLOW sometime after 1930 and before 1946. They lived in Urbana, Illinois from 1946 until sometime before 1953, when they moved to Springfield, Missouri. John and Margaret had 4 sons, one of which lost an eye due to an accident with a gian firecracker, in 6/1953. Margaret’s adopted parents were Tone T. and Edna L. (ALLEN) KIMBLE of Hampshire, Kane Co., Illinois. Margaret’s biological parents may in fact be Tone KIMBLE’s niece, Helen KIMBLE and John BIRNIE.

Tone KIMBLE had a brother William Colby KIMBLE who married Zora ?. William and Zora had two children: Margaret Helen KIMBLE (b. 1896) and Maurine J. KIMBLE. Zora died sometime prior to 1910, and Margaret/Helen and Maurine were raised by William’s parents: William Colby and Margaret Jane KIMBLE. Margaret/Helen married John BIRNIE (b. 6/1891) sometime between 1910 and 1918. They had one daughter: Margaret J. BIRNIE (b. 1916) before Margaret/Helen died on 2/6/1918. John BIRNIE and his daughter moved in with his younger brother William BIRNIE, and is present in the 1920 census for Geneva, Kane Co., Illinois. A 1928 document lists a Margaret J. BIRNIE as having lost her legal guardian (John BIRNIE). By the 1930 census John and Margaret BIRNIE are not present, however Tone and Edna KIMBLE now have an adopted daughter, Margaret J. KIMBLE, also born in 1916, and living in Hampshire, Kane Co. Illinois.

Would appreciate any information concerning the descendants of John and Margaret BARTLOW, in addition to validation of Margaret’s parentage.
My Great Grandmother Ann Eliza Birnie was born in Sunderland, NE England in 1869. She was the daughter of William Birnie (b. Aberdeen c.1826) and Mary Ann Tunstall (b. Edinburgh c. 1834). Ann Eliza's known siblings were Thomas (c.1848), Sarah Ann (c.1851), Mary Jane (c.1853), William (c.1860), John George (c.1863), Jessie (c.1873) and Edith Amy (c.1874). All children were born in Sunderland according to Census records, although judging by their birth dates, the older siblings may have been born from a previously unknown marriage. William senior was a Mariner or Trimmer (these normally carried coal up and down the River Wear or coastal waters). After his death sometime between 1888 and 1891, his wife Mary Ann became a Publican.

Any connections? I'd love to find out more about William senior's ancestors.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Steve........Sunderland, NE England
James Birnie settled with his family in Cathlamet, Wahkiakum, WA. in 1846. They have a very interesting museum in that town that is always searching for history on the Birnie family. Would you be willing to send me some family history on this Birnie family? I am a member of this
museum's Historical Society and would love to present this information to them. I have collected what I could about the Birnie family and turned it over to them but I found that there is not very much available in this area.
I have 5 books in print about the Wahkiakum County, WA. records and am working on the sixth one now. It is about the early school records of that county.
I am willing to share what I have about the Birnie family that settled in Cathlamet. I only have one picture of James Birnie that I found in a book on church records for that area.
Thank you for your time.
Evelyn Morris Huerd
ehuerd@msn.com
