Thank you for responding. I have since received some information from my cousin. I thought I would share it with you and anyone else that is interested in researching Birt history.
Here it is:

I believe Charles Birt's ancestors are from Wales.

He had 1 brother, William; and 2 sisters, Lemma and Emma.

Charles Birt's parents were George Wesley Birt and Sarah Anne Mattox.

Charles Birt's paternal grandparents were James Welles Birt and Amanda Maddox.
Wesley is a very common first name in my branch of the Birt family. I am descended from Andrew Davidson Birt, who was one of the first settlers of Wabash Township in Darke County OH. In fact, I am descended from all of the first settlers in this area as family members intermarried! There is a Wesley in every generation, maybe more. There are also a lot of descendents. So Wesley is a very common name. I don't have any Charles Birt in any of my research. But you might want to look in Darke County records.

I don't believe I have anything on this particular person. I can tell you that, in that particular time period, there were a lot of Birts in Darke County, Ohio. Andrew Davidson Birt was one of the first settlers in Wabash Township, around the town of North Star. Thus, many descendents. His father, William Birt, was in Ohio by at least 1790 when it was still a territory. He lived in the Greene County area. He also had a lot of children. I know at least one of his sons, Thomas Birt, moved to Rush County Indiana very early on. Hopefully, this will give you a few places to look for your Mary.

Hi. I'm looking for information on Charles Birt. He was living in Colorado in the late 1800's/early 1900's. He was married to a gal named Ina. My grandfather, Wesley Birt was his first known son. He was born in 1900.
Charles left the family and we have no information about him. Any tips/information would be wonderful.
Thank you.
Krista Birt

In the La Porte Co., IN 1870 census Mary Breeman age 41 from NY was listed in James Burt's household with her daughter Sarah A age 8 from Ohio. Then in the La Porte 1880 census, this Mary is now James' wife with her daughter Sarah A. still living with them.

Thus don't have Mary's maiden name but maybe another step closer to finding it out.

I am descended from Sarah (Waters) Knapp, daughter of Catherine (Overmyer) Waters Birt and half-sister of John M. Birt.

My first Birt ancestor came here to Canada in 1831 from Sussex England but nothing is known of his family before that. There doesn't seem to be any connection to Birt's in that area today. Many of my older Birt ancestors were Orangemen so it has always been suspected that he was originally from Northern Ireland and just came to Canada via England for some reason. But none of his decendents today know. Sorry no more help, but possibly Irish connections

Dear Rosemary Dietrick

I and other relatives have lots of information on the Birts. Your husband is a descentant of Mary Viola. We don't have much on your side if the family and could use info. I have a genealogy program file I can send you with many of W.W.Birt's descendants information and info relating to W.W.Birt's ancestor's as we have found them so far. We are planning to have a reunion of the Descendants of WW Birt in the next few years in Berwick and are trying to make contact with all of W.W. Birt's descentants.

Email me and we can exchange information. It would also be helpful if you have any photographs of Mary Viola Birt as I have a number of W.W.Birt's daughters but am having a difficult time figuring out who is who. With an identified photo of one of the Daughters I should have better luck in figuring out who the others are.

Timothy Birt

Re: Missing Birts

Sorry I didn't reply sooner but I never got notified of this post, which I don't understand because I still use this email address...

In any case my connection is that Anna Doncevic was my grandfather Frank Birt's first wife. She died in 1919 and he then married Bara (Koscevic) Klasnich in 1922. My father Charles was born to them in Dec 1924.

As for the 1930 census, I found Frank indexed under Bert not Birt and living with his nephew and niece, Frank Kostovich and Anna Klasnich in Milwaukee. I still have no idea where his kids were at that time. They would have been 16, 12 and 7. To say that my father's family was disfunctional seems an understatement.

Sylvester seems to have come out ok but only he, Sylvia and my dad knew what it was like to have a family life like that. Frank died in Aug of 1953 in Alabama. He was living with his step children.

As for my father, he left my mother when she was 8 months pregnant with me and he never contacted her again apart from a telegram regarding my birth. My dad's sister-in-law, Daisy Klasnich kept in touch with my mother for a while but even they lost touch eventually. Daisy died in 1984 and my mother in 1990. I believe they lost touch in the mid sixties after Daisy's husband Frank died.

But all that was forty years ago and while we managed to get by, my dad actually suffered the most, he died of an alcohol related disease in 1969 at the age of 44.

I suppose it has made me all that much more determined to find out where I come from.

Specifically to Robyn Gardner.
I have recently begun research into my wife's family. She is a direct descendant of Benjamin Thomas Birt's older brother, George Wilmott Birt. The story is that several family members emigrated to New Zealand where they raised large families, many who later served in Europe in World War I.
Can exchange information if required.

Hi Bob Brindle,
Martha J. Birt Buck was my great, great grandmother. She lived in Newton, IL when she died around 1934. I am trying to find out information about her granddaughter Zella Beverlin. Zella married John Thomas Beverlin in 1913. Before she married John Beverlin she was married and had a child named Hazel. I don't know the name of this man, the father of Hazel. The mystery is one of our family skeletons. I would appreciate any information you have. My dad (Glenn Beverlin) told me he was six years old when Martha died. She was taken to the cemetery in a horse-drawn herse in the snow. My dad was too young to go but he said there was so much snow on the ground they had to carry the coffin part of the way. My kids and myself found her tombstone just this past weekend in the cemetery outside of Bogota, Il. Don't know the name of the cemetery but I can find out and let you know if you're interested. Thanks Diann e-mail Igore44@aol.com

Re: Need Birt info

The 1880 census of Arlington, Rush County, Indiana has the following family:

John S. Burt, 44, born IN, works in tin shop
Adaline Burt, 43, born OH
William L. Burt, son, age 20, born IN
Elizabeth Burt, daughter, age 17, born IN
Robert W. Burt, son, age 9, born IN
Anna L. Burt, daughter, age 9 months, born IN
Beady Burt, niece, age 8, born IN

I'm reasonably sure that this John S. Burt is in reality John S. Birt, son of Levin Birt and Hypatia Laughlin. Levin and Hypatia had 3 sons: William S. Birt born 1830, Robert M. Birt born 1833, and John S. Birt born 1836. Perhaps this "Beady" is your "Birdy," a daughter of either William S. Birt or Robert M. Birt. I can't find either William or Robert in the 1880 census so perhaps they were deceased by then.

One of Hypatia Laughlin's sisters, Alcestis, married a John Carr. The Laughlin family settled in Rushville, Rush County, Indiana in the 1820's.

His parents may have come from England.

Re: ANY BIRTS WITH IRISH RELATIONS

I have ancestors from Ireland named Birt. Dr. John Birt(doctor of medecine) married Catherine Reid in County Antrim. Their children were John Birt born 1844 (drowned in Australia 1892), Edward Birt (remained in Antrim), Bridget Birt, Theresa Birt, and Mary Josephine Birt. Theresa was an Ursuline nun, Mary Josephine married James Kennedy in Govan, Scotland in 1871, and emigrated to Baltimore, Maryland.
Some in the family refer to the surname as "De Birt".
If this sounds familiar to anyone, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Jan Dye
