Have recently dicovered that Robert (Bob) Birtwistle is the son of Harry Birtwistle and Ambrosina Hilton - his wife is Lorraine (Where Judy relates to the letter in our possession is a mystery still). He had a sister Annie Birtwistle who I believe remained in Perth, Any further information greatfully received.

I am Researching the Birtwistle family, who's Godfather is William Birtwistle b 1890 Blackburn Lancs, William was Director of Fisheries dept, in Singapore in the late 1920's. He married Alice, who was a colonial nursing sister at Singapore General Hospitsl.
I was wondering if you have any more infomation on William and Alice, as i can't find their marriage anywhere, Alice was b in 1891, but i can't find her birth or maiden name.
I have Joseph Birtwistle b 1860 and Jane Clegg as William's parents.

I am looking for any information about a J BIRTWISTLE? She was the GRAND DAUGHTER of JOHN & ELIZABETH PICKERING. John & Elizabeth were both born in Barnsley south Yorkshire. I assume they went to live in Morecambe in the 1900's. JOhn & Elizabeth were my GT GRAND PARENTS. Can anyone HELP.

My grandfather was named Harry Birtwistle and he was from Ramsbottom, a small town in Lancashire. He married my grandmother, Florence in 1903. They lived in Rawtenstall. She came to the U.S., without Harry, in 1920 with my father and his brother. Harry was a stone mason. Could we possibly have a link?

I'm trying to do my family tree, my name is Maria Birtwistle Schlichtig. I have hit the "brick wall", his name is Thomas Edward Birtwistle, born about 1838 in Bury, Lancashire, England. He married about 1875 to Catherine Flanagan. I think he might have come to USA in 1871.
Their children were all born in Phila,Pa.
George Frances,1876, Thomas, jr,1877, Catherine,1879, Priscilla,1882, Charlotte, 1884 and John A. 1886

Is this Thomas in the "Birtwistle" book?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for not getting back sooner. I am also from the Rossendale Valley. Which branch of the Birtwistle family are you from. Also are you related in any way to Thomas Edward Holden. I tried to check your tree and see you have only just started. Did you know that a couple of books have been written about the Birtwistle family.

I am trying to locate living decendants of James, William and Riley Birtwistle. They are the sons of Pickup and Elizabeth Ann Birtwistle and were all born in Crawshawbooth.

James was born in 1859 and married Susan Clark,moved to Liverpool and died Nov 1946. Children were William E, Pickup, Edith E, Rena A, George E, Amy, Gladys, and Bessie.

William was born in 1863 and married Hannah Ashworth and moved to Burnley, 1 Child Fred.

Riley was born in 1865 and married Mary Alice Wilkinson and stayed local to Crawshawbooth. Children were Elizabeth Ann and Albert.

I am hoping to find photo's and stories of the Family.

I believe your Phoebe is Phoebe Bertwistle, born 1821, with parents James Bertwistle of Blackburn and Elizabeth nee Fulledge. I did check the parish records for the conformist churches on Lancashire Online Parishes and I did not find a baptism or a marriage under Bertwistle or Birtwiste, but I did find what you had, namely, the marriage in 1846 in the Blackburn Registry on LancashireBMD. I do have heir ancestry for Phoebe if we were able to tie your Phoebe to the Phoebe I have birth information on. I don't check this site very often, but you can contact me directly at lbirtwhistle@cox.net if you would like more information. I have been the unoffical compiler of the family for over 20 years now and the tree has over 12,000 people.

I have a James Lonsdale (b1821) who married Phoebe (Phaby) Birtwistle, b1822, both of Accrington. Their marriage is registered )Blackburn Vol 21, p 49) but I can't find any record of Phoebe under her maiden name. Does anyone have her in the tree or can anyone throw some light on this for me?

Hi, I can't add anymore than you have been told by Fiona as to death of Elizabeth unless you might know the parish church the family may have gone to and then if it was a conformist otr non-conformist church. If you have a guess at that I can give you a couple other sites, otherwise wait for the the site that Fiona suggested. I did not find her on the 1891 census. How much of the tree do you havew or want? I have been the unofficial cvompiler of the family for over 20 years now. There are now over 12,000 on the tree. Your line does go back to 1160. Also, there are a couple others researching your line. I don't check this board often so it is best contacting me directly if you would like more information and maybe add your direct line to the tree.

However...Higher Booths is in the Hyndburn Reg District. I believe that their deaths may be coming online quite soon at

I didn't realize that all Birtwistles came from the same area in Northern England. My father, Kenneth Grant Birtwistle was born in Lancashire in 1918 and moved to Canada (the Montreal area) with his family two years later. His father was named Harry Birtwistle. My Dad was one of six children - his siblings were Arthur, Muriel, Vera, Harold, and Robert Birtwistle. I know that my grandfather, Harry, had siblings who also emigrated to Canada, but I don't know their names.

I do not check the message boards very often, but when I saw your note and I checked our tree, it appears I do not have your line on the same. I have Thomas and Ann with their children, but the only information I had on Edward was his birth in 1852. If you would share your information as to your branch I will add it to the tree and would be happy to supply you with a copy of the tree in .ged or family tree maker format. My grandmother, Rachel Ann Birtwistle b.13/04/1878 was from the Gt Harwood line of Birtwistles. Her parents were Edward and Elizabeth (Sourbutts) Birtwistle of 15 Cattle Street. Edward was a coffin maker. His parents were Thomas and Ann (Mercer) Birtwistle, m.1/06/1850 & living at 17 Cattle Street in 1881. Thomas' father was William Birtwistle, a block printer. Ann's father was Robert Mercer. I'm looking for information about this Robert Mercer and any associated Birtwistle/Mercer/Hodgson/Shaw/Crichlow/Duerden information.

Have only limited information with this area of my research. We have a letter from 1983 from Bob and Judy in Frankston, Australia. It is believed that Bob is my Grandfathers cousin and he had a sister/family in Perth as they regularly travelled across country to visit.

Do you have any connections to the Hilton family from the Wigan/Bury area of Lancashire?

I have your Thomas on the tree. I have his birth abt 1687, married Anne M. and they had 8 children, including ones you have listed. The tree as you may know goes back to 1160 and presently contains over 9500 people so I cannot e-mail the whole tree. Part of the tree has been placed on this site by Elizabeth Kelly and Ian Maclaren. My earliest Birtwhistle was Thomas, b. ca 1692 at Skipton. He married Anne (?), b ca 16969 at Skipton. They had children: Mary, ch. 3 Dec 1718, William, ch.10 Oct 1720, Martha, ch 13 Jan 1723, Grace, ch 31 July 1727, and Alice, ch 5 Feb 1732. Does this family fit in with any of yours?

Alan Birtwhistle's genealogy report shows Jenny's father as Thomas, b1771 at Dean Head, Great Harwood. All the children were b. Blackburn - Jenny in 1799. The tree traces directly back to Ralph and Reyner.

I cannot find a direct link. Wiliam Birtwistle's The Birtwistle Family shows a Jenny Birtwistle b1796 in Pedigree 44. Her father Joseph lived in Oakenhead in Haslingden. Some of the family later settled in Blackburn.

I have two sources you may try. The first is the publisher if you have not already tried their. One of our cousins just recently got a copy from another source, but she nor the source replied to my request for information. I will give both sources to you, send me a note at lbirtwhistle@cox.net. The tree is incorported in a new book that a group of us are publishing shortly, but the early local history information is not and I recommended that people obtain the book you are seeking.

I have Joseph Birtwistle born Musbury 1840 who at 1891 census is living at 27 Brown Street Accrington with his daughter Nancy 28 born Musbury and Mary 26 wife of John William Golding 28 born Ely Cambridgeshire. Joseph was a widower and John Golding was head of household

John Golding was my grandmothers brother and my father was born in his home at 55 Fountain Street Accrington on 8th January 1897. Would the Joseph born 1840/41 fit into this group.

I will check further, but I need more information if you have it. Who were the witnesses at each of the 3 weddings that you seem to have definite information on: James F. Haworth to Margaret; James B to Margaret Boothman and James to Sarah Roscow. The last differs from my records. I have a James b.1804 married in 1825 to Sarah Whitaker. A lot of these early records through the 1851 Census come from Billy Birtwistle's book.James, b. 1804 is mentioned on page 108. I checked a lot with the 1881 Census. It's possible that brothers or sisters were witnesses at the weddings and that would help me tie into the records I have.

I have no information as to other children, but this William is definitely on our tree. I didn't have his marriage or the child George. I have a record of all William's siblings, a little different than cast in the Census. Louisa is Louise for both mother and sibling. William's age is correct, born 1876. The submitter of this information did not have more information on this line. I'll keep looking, but if you want a copy of the whole tree let me know.

Yes I do have the marriage certificate and can send you a copy off board if you would like to have it.

William Henry Birtwistle's age is given as 22 on the certificate making him born around 1870 and his father's name is James Birtwistle Green Grocer. The marriage took place on 13th February 1898 at St Johjns Church Baxenden. William's address at the time of the marriage was 89 Wellington Street Accrington.

In 1901 William and Betsy were living at 2 Ashworth Street Accrington with her father and their son George aged 2.

I am interested in finding any descendants of this marriage. Do you know if there were any other children born to them?

I have a lot of William H.Birtwistles on our tree, but I have no marriage for any of them Do you have his date of birth and/or who his parents were. The tree I have been compiling now has 9500 people on it. No I didn't do all the research, a lot of people have been involved. Hope to hear from you.
