Biscello-Bisceglia connection?

Greetings. My name is John Biscello, I was born-bred-and-raised in Brooklyn, NY, and recently found out from my father (also John Biscello, as is his father), who found out from my great Uncle Bobby, that our original surname is Bisceglia, and lineage-wise, we are connected to the Bisceglias that started Casa di Fruta (in San Jose, Ca). I believe my ancestors are from Calabria and Naples, though I'm not 100% sure. I just want to find out if the Biscello-Bisceglia name is indeed one and the same, and if so, where my relatives, here and abroad, are at, as I am a writer and want to incorporate some of my family history into my work. Thanks for any info you can provide!

P.S. Here's an interesting Bisceglia myth that you may or may not have read (it's on Wikipedia): Rumor has existed that anyone with the surname "Bisceglia" is a direct descendant of "Lord Bisceglia". "Lord Bisceglia" was a General in the Italian Army that saved the town subsequently named for him (Bisceglie) on the Adriatic coast of Italy. Since that time, any descendants of "Lord Bisceglia" is technically a "Lord" or "Lady" of the feudal nation of Italy.

Re: FAMILY FROM CERISANO ITALY

I was born and lived in Cerisano till the age of 13, I remember and I also asked my mother if the Bisceglia Family living on our Street (Viale Roma) may be related to your family and of course in a small village everyone is somehow related to another.
The family of the Bisceglia on my street: the father name was Francesco Bisceglia married to Rosina (Cicala by surname), their Kids: Giuseppe-Antonio-Maria-Rosetta-Lucia.
as per my mother: Maria Bisceglia immigrated to Montreal Canada and died few years ago, Rosetta and Antonio live in Toronto Canada, Lucia still lives in Cerisano. As a kid Lucia used to help me with school work and I used to go to their house a lot and Rosina used to watch me when my mother had to go places.
This Bisceglia family had an adjointed house that was left to them from previous generations they had stairs that separated the two homes and to one side lived the Bisceglia family and to the other side Ida Cannataro (widower)with her daughter and her daughter`s family. Ida had siblings and one of them was Isabella and the other ones my mom doesn`t remember them.
We live in Montreal Canada, my mother`s family name is Chiappetta a very popular name in Cerisano and my father`s family name is De Santo- not so popular.
As for the Cannataro family, as per my mother: her grand-mother from her mother side of the family had married a Cannataro.
As per my mom: her grand-mother had married a Cannataro and used to call her grandmother: nonna cannataro.
I hope this will help you further in your search for your relatives in Cerisano.
I know I`m fascinated with everything that deals with Cerisano, I have a large family of relatives that lives there, I`ve been there couple of times and of course I lived there till the age of 13. I have my parents in Montreal with me, however they would love to go back and finish their lives there.
My e-mail address is: desanto_mary@yahoo.com.
It was a pleasure to give you a bit of information. ciao.

I know it's been many years since you've posted this so I'm hoping this gets to you. I've recently returned form Italy with some Italian friends. (The Meniketti's) he, being of direct Italian descent has just become a citizen of Italy. They said do not say Bis-eg-lia in Italy the proper pronunciation is Bis-A-lia. I'm from California but was born and raised in Worcester Massachusetts. I build guitars, Bis-A-lia guitars not Bis-eg-lia guitars. I want our name pronounced correctly when referring to my instruments. hope to hear from you.

Hello Chuck,

Yes, my father is "Buddy" Bisceglia and he told me to tell you that he remembers you and to say hello. I asked my dad, and he said that my grandfather went by John B Bisceglia, but his first name was actually Giovanni. My father had two sisters and one brother (Dede, Kay, and Tom). My aunt Kay passed several years ago, but everyone else is doing well. My father still owns the drugstore and works there most every day. I am the youngest of his five (three boys, two girls) children. I will have to look at our family history on Ancestory.com and see if I can add anything. I'ts great to hear from you.

-Ethan

Hi Ethan:
Is your father "Buddy" Bisceglia who owns a drugstore in Kansas City? If so, he is my first cousin. However, I'm confused because his father was Reverend John B. Bisceglia, also of K.C. John was my father's oldest brother. My dad's name was Charles Blase (Biagio) Bisceglia and he and I were both optometrists in Ellwood City, Penna. I have been living in South Carolina for the past 20 years. You should be able to find the family history of the family in Ancestry.com if you are interested. If you need any more info, please contact me at: chuckbis@highstream.net.
Chuck
I'm trying to find out abit about my great-grandmother her name was Leanora Bisceglia Baines OSBORNE she was born in London 1870.

Do you know of any Bisceglia who may have been living in London at that time. On her birth certificate its "Father Unknown". I have done loads of searches but to no avail. I understand from by father (who doesn't know alot about his family) that he thinks she had either Italian or Spanish on her side of the family???? .

Any info would be very much appreciated.

Lisa Durbridge
Middlesex
ENGLAND

I have been searching the birth, marriage and death records of Montalto Uffugo for my family for about 2 months. I have records from 1870-1910 currently. A Domenico Bisceglia son of Fidele Bisceglia and Teresa DeLuca married a Elizabetta Napolitano in 1900. This is the only record I currently have but if you can give me some more info perhaps I can find something for you in the records.
Cathy Napolitano
