Yes the Bissells were French Hugenots...the name was BYSELLE originally...I am a Bissell on my mother's side. The Byselle's feld France and went to England and then the name was Anglized to BISSELL. The male Bissell who came over from England was from the Somerset area of England and settled in Connecticut and founded the town of Windsor CT. he is buried there. His grave is online somewhere. Look under Captain John Bissell. That town in CT has alot of info. Any Bissell here in the USA is related to any other Bissell. :))

Hello,

My family has lines that relocated to Brockville Ont. if that helps. I haven't deeply researched them, I just know that there were births/deaths recorded there of my line, and there is a Bissell Cemetery there, headstones searchable online, although I don't believe any of them are mine...perhaps far enough back though.

If you are the same person who wrote about Israel Bissell being Jewish, I must confess that I am reasonably in touch with research on him, as he was a distant relative of my line. I must say that I have read of this rumor once before. But from EVERYTHING in the research I've seen, that's all it is. Names of biblical orientation are very common in the Bissell line among others, particularly in the age in which he lived.

I'm a descendant of the "Bowe Hill" Bowe family and Bissell family. Bowe Hill is where Edward and Ruth Hubbard Bowe settled, between Hartwick and Milford, Otsego county, NY. They were both born in Middletown, CT.
I have not located the gravesite of Isaac Bissell III.
His son, however, Orange Bissell with wife Sally/Sarah Guild, is buried in Milford, Otsego County, NY in the main town cemetery behind the Methodist/Episcopal church. I posted pictures on findagrave.com.
Orange and Sally Guild Bissell had Sally Bissell who married Abner Bowe, the son of Edward and Ruth Bowe. They came through Batavia, New York, then to North Bloomfield, Trumbull county, Ohio. Three of Orange Bissell's children are buried in Geneva, Ashtabula county, Ohio (Lucius, Charles and Sally) in Evergreen Cemetery.
I'd like to hear from anyone related to this group.

David Bowe (Stanley, Leon, Albert, Charles, Abner, Edward III)

Gina....OH WOW.....yes, I will definitely call you tomorrow...probably about 1 p.m. as I have appts in the morning. It sounds like you're saying that Betsy was buried in Potter's field associated with the poor farm. This would be VERY strange indeed. If the burial year was 1859, then she was indeed moved there at that time from somewhere else...a cemetery that closed or was closing...and maybe since her parents were no longer in the area, the county moved her body to the poor farm cemetery? I had hoped she had been moved to Oakwood...where a lot owner could be identified...but it doesn't sound like that is the case. We will indeed have quite a bit to discuss tomorrow. I am very intrigued as to what the story is behind her stone. I assume it has not been on her grave...lost or stolen? It sounds like a long mystery as to where little Betsy was buried will finally be answered. Ah..tomorrow is another day. Sounds like you are passionate about your research also. We'll have a great time discussing all of this. Thank you so much for posting this and getting back to me. I reposted because the first post turned out not to be located as a reply to your post...so I didn't know if you would get it or not.

Julie Bissell Tupker

Gina, I'm trying again to get hold of you. Would you please contact me either on the board or through my email address: Juliebskt (at) aol.com (replace the (at) with @ when you send an email to me. I have written it this way to keep spammers from gleaning the email address.

I realize that you had originally responded to Brent, but we are direct descendants, so I hope you will respond to us also.

I am very interested in the info you have for Betsey Bissell, daughter of Pierce and Sarah, and what info you found on Pierce and Sarah in Joliet.

My husband and I (both direct descendants of Pierce) were in Joliet some years back and did not find the burial for Betsey. Is she in Oakwood? If so, and 1859 is correct for the burial, she was moved there and that was a reburial date because she actually died in 1852. If it was Oakwood, did you find out who had bought the lot and who else is buried there?

My brother and I have found Pierce's previously unknown sister and husband, living in Joliet from 1840 until their deaths. We have a lot of it written up. In fact, Pierce bought his land in Joliet from his brother in law and resold it to him when they left to go back to Rock Island. Pierce's sister and husband were extremely wealthy and movers and shakers in Joliet.

We also have a probable father for Pierce and his sister, but not a mother yet, because she would have been a first wife for the possible Bissell father. We're probably about 98+% positive on our identication of Pierce's father.

Please, drop me a line. I'm anxious to talk with you and exchange information.

Julie Bissell Tupker

Pierce Bissell...Gina please contact me

Gina, I saw your recent post to Brent about Pierce and Sarah Bissell's baby daughter, Betsey....that you had found her grave. There may be a transcription error in the year...but it looks like you may have indeed found her. I don't have an Ancestry membership, so I can't contact you directly. Please contact me at the following address:

Juliebskt (at) aol.com
(note, I have inserted the word at in ( ) instead of using the @ sign so that the address can't be gleaned for spam purposes.

My brother and I are direct descendants of Pierce B. Bissell and Sarah. How are you connected to them ....and how did you find Betsy's grave? I had been over to Joliet about 5 or so years ago...and talked to the guy who has the records for Oakwood Cemetery...and he could not find anything at that time in the cemetery records. But, he's now retired and may has more time. I'm assuming you found her burial at Oakwood? I don't think Oakwood was created until after Pierce and Sarah left Joliet to go back to Rock Island, IL, but she could have been moved to Oakwood when it was opened. I'll have to go back and see when that occured, because the 1859 date may have been after Oakwood opened and another closeby cemetery was closed and burials moved. This is all very exciting....please contact me.

Julie Bissell Tupker

Re: Unknown Bissell married Mary Lefever

I decided to take a look at the 1900 census and interestingly, it shows that Bell/e was born Oct 1864, not 1867...so much closer to that 1865 birth year...which would line up better with Lizze B. Bissell, daughter of Mary J. and James Monroe Bissell.

Also, you mentioned three kids...all boys...of Frank and Bell Bissell Hill, but the 1900 census shows that they had a daughter, Ethel M. Hill born June 1891 age 8 Ohio. The other two kids were Raymond E born 1894 and Leon F born Feb 1897.

Ethel appears in the Hill household of 1910 as the wife of (?) Mott...having been married for 2 years. Her husband is shown as being son-in-law and indexed on Ancestry as Gese Mott, but on 200 magnification, appears to be George Mott, but is unclear as it is written very tiny and close together.

BTW...the 1900 census showed that Frank and Bell had been married 9 years...married in 1991.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Julie Bissell Tupker

Re: Unknown Bissell married Mary Lefever

I did some research today to try to find some answers for you concerning your Bissell questions.

The only candidate I can find to be your Mary (Bissell) Hill, was Mary J. b 1825, the wife of James Monroe Bissell. James Monroe Bissell was the son of Ennos and Corintha (Phillips/Phelps) Bissell. James and Mary J. had a daughter in the 1870 census named Lizzie age 5 born in Ohio. In the 1880 census, she again was shown as born in Ohio (1865)...but now shows her middle initial to be ~B~. I'm guessing that she may have been Lizzie/Elizabeth Belle Bissell.

In the 1880 census, the household is as follows:

Ravenna, Portage Co, Ohio
Phebe H. Crooks 52 NY
Mary J. Bissell 55 NY (sister)
Frances A. Crooks 28 son
Mary J. Crooks 24 (says daughter...but she was Frances's wife)
Ralph Crooks 2 (says son...but he was son of Frances and Mary J.
Lizzie B. Bissell 15 niece.

1870 Alliance, Stark Co, Ohio
J. M Bissell 48 Ohio Saloon Keeper
Mary J. 46 NY
Lizzie 5 Ohio

1860Freedom, Portage Co, Ohio
James M. Bissell 37 Ohio
Mary J. Bissell 34 NY
Helen 12 Indiana
Orrin Fairchild 18 OHio

1850 Freedom , Portage Co, OHio
James M. Bissell 27
Mary J. Bissell 24
Note that Helen does not appear in this household. I surmise that either they adopted her and gave her the Bissell name, or she was a niece or cousin who they were raising. I did not research that further. Since no other children appear in their households, except this Helen and later Lizzie B (Belle?), we could speculate that both girls were adopted possibly, though Lizzie could have been a late baby after years of no children...or children who were born and died between censuses.

I have used Ancestry to try to find ANY other Belle Bissell who might be the same one you are researching....but there just aren't any that fit the profile you have given other than Lizzie B. Bissell, daughter of James Monroe Bissell and Mary J.

BUT, there's one big wrinkle. You said you have a death certificate for Belle that says he mother was Mary Lefever. James Monroe Bissell married Mary Dorr/Derr, Oct 6, 1844 in Cuyahoga Co, OHio. Further more, Dorr/Derr was her maiden name, because the 1880 census says she is the sister of Phoebe Crooks. Albert M. Crooks married Phoebe Derr on March 17, 1847 in Portage Co. So, the sisters were Dorr/Derr by birth. It IS possible that Mary J. Bissell married a 2nd time AFTER the 1880 census, to someone named Lefever and whoever gave the info for the death certificate for Belle, only knew that name. There have been far worse screwups on death certificates, so it's plausible.

Again...this is the only Bissell I could find that matches at all to your family and I think it's highly likely that this is the right one and that there's just some incorrect info that's come into the picture.

But, perhaps someone else can find another family that looks like a better fit. As I have time, I'll look into this further.

Julie Bissell Tupker

Hello,

I am seeking information on an unknown Bissell who married Mary Lefever. They had one child that I know of - Belle Bissell and she married Frank Hill.

Belle Bissell
b: 9 oct 1867
Ravenna, Portage, OH
d: 26 Jun 1933
Ravenna, Portage, OH

m

Frank E Hill
b: 26 Nov 1853
d: 6 Sep 1922
Ravenna, Portage, OH

They had 3 children:

Raymond L Hill
Leon Hill
Norman Bradley Hill

Does anyone have any information on who her father may have been? I do have her death certificate, so I do know her mother was Mary Lefever, however it says "unknown Bissell" for her father.

Thank you for your time in reading this.

Teresa

teresaleetierney@gmail.com

I was of the understanding that he was a descendant of Captain John Bissell, but have recently been told that he was a Jew. I also found out that there are Yiddish Bissell's. Are these two families related or completely separate? The Yiddish Bissells - do they come from a different line and family altogether than the Captain John Bissell descendants? Do they merge somewhere? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, Enid. Great to hear from you. I am most interested in gathering information about the Bissell Family in England... especially concerning the generation of Moses & Aaron! Do you know birthdates of Thomas & Mary Ann Bissell (parents of Moses & Aaron)? Have you taken our line back further? I have 16 of Noah's children... Were there really 21 ? !!! Please email me at randleebissell@netscape.net
My mailing address is P.O. Box 1897, Cleveland, GA 30528. Phone is 770-862-8101. What info. can I help you with???
Thanks. Rand L. Bissell

I want to follow Mary's family back into Scotland and to find more about Joshua's beginnings.

Joshua and Mary had 5 children. John Harmon Bissell, Mary (Myra)MacDonald Bissell, Joshua Allen Bissell, Jesse Allen Bissell, Anna Maude Bissell.

I can trace this line to myself, but cannot seem to go back further. Thanks!
