I'm wondering if the parents may be the same as this marriage found in the index of Schuylkill County marriages.

9-D879 1885-1910
Bitler, Clara E. (Female)
Bienemann, William H. (Male)

So I guess a trip to Schuylkill County courthouse may resolve my own question. If anyone has further information on this family though, I would stil be interested.

-Glenn

Clara Bitler - Schuylkill Co

I recently discovered a Philadelphia Death Certificate for an Elmer Buerner (sp?) (b. abt Nov 1905, Philadelphia, d. 29 Jun 1906, Cape May Co, NJ, bu. 2 Jul 1906, Belleview Cemetery). His parents are listed as William Buerner (sp?), b. Schuylkill Co, PA, and Clara Bitler (b. Schuylkill Co, PA). It's likely these two slipped through on the missing 1890 Census, and I can not find them in 1900 or any any subsequent census.

Does anyone know how Clara may fit in?

-Glenn

All of Hower's original works are in the posession of his daugter's family, the Anderson's in Florida. Although I have never seen his actual notes, he and I had corresponded a few times before his death.

I have a little on the Girton family in my records, so perhaps I can help with your question.

-Glenn

Does anyone know what happened to Hower Bitler's work or who may have acccess to it? I am searching for information concerning Melvin Girton, born about 1913, who married Martha Bitler. They are listed in Hower Bitler's tree on line; I understand Hower is now deceased.

Greetings All. I am another Bitler descendant with Michigan ties. My gg-grandfather and gg-grandmother were Daniel F. and Angeline (Seiwell) Bitler. My grandparents were Winfield Allen Bitler and Joanna C. Zimmerman.

Would anyone know who Angeline’s parents were? Also, does anyone know what the F. in Daniel's middle name stood for? Thanks.

Hi Sue,

Yes, I think you are probably right. The same thing happened on my Munro side. The middle name Baird was handed down several times from the maternal line as a middle name. So your guess makes as good a sense as any. I’ll keep digging one the Seiwell connection. Thanks for the reply.

This is simply a guess. I have no documentation, but I suspect the "F." in Daniel F. Bitler's name stands for "Focht," the maiden name of his mother Matilda Focht.

Unfortunately, I no information about Angeline's parents.

Sue

The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia, PA, May 24, 1903, Pg 4. "BODY OF FIREMAN IN A MINE BREACH // Supposed to have Plunged Through Misstep While on His Way to Work at Locust Gap Mine // Special to The Inquirer. // MT. CARMEL, Pa., May 23 -- After spending the entire day hunting for Harvey Bitler, his body was found late tonight in a mine breach near Locust Gap, with his neck broken. // Bitler was employed as a fireman at the Locust Gap Colliery and left his home at Helfenstein last night to go to work. When he did not return this morning his family became alarmed and a search was instituted. It is supposed that a misstep in the dark caused him to plunge down the cave-in.".

Does anyone know where Harvey was buried, or who his family was? I believe he may be son of Franklin Bitler and Sarah Eisenhauer, but no evidence to back it up.

I have created a web site containing photos and transcriptions of all the tombstones of the Zion M.E. Cemetery in Robeson Township. The page is a work in progress, but most of the information is now available. The site address is: http://www.users.fast.net/~gpiper/genealogy/zion_me/ZionMECe.... This cemetery has some of the earliest Bitlers in Robeson Township buried there. I am working on changing the format so all photos do not try to load on the same page, which causes timeouts for slower connections.

I will be working on posting other Bitler tombstones located in Robeson Township cemeteries sometime in the near future, as there are quite a few stones.

Elijah Newton BITLER/BEITLER

Searching for the whereabouts of Elijah Newton BITLER/BEITLER from 1860 to 1920. Elijah was son of Samuel BITLER and Maria NIGH of Fairfield Co, OH and later of Wyandot Co, OH. Maria is buried in Old Lutheran Ridge Cemetery near Carey, OH, and children William H, and David S are in the newer Lutheran Ridge Cemetery.

Samuel's family appears in the Census in Clear Creek Twp, Fairfield Co in 1850 and 1860. By 1870, the family is in Crawford Twp, Wyandot Co, OH without Elijah.

He has a Civil War pension card listing invalid status in OH in what looks like Nov 1915, and his widow (Lillie) is listed on same pension index card in Florida in Feb 1929. Elijah died 25 Nov 1927 and is buried at Mount Peace Cemetery in Osceola Co, FL. That area was what was called a Soldiers Colony, a retirement place for Civil War veterans.

Of note about this family is that of the children of Samuel and Maria, only one, Jesse Corwin, kept the spelling "BITLER", while the others changed the spelling "BEITLER". Jesse went on to become the probate judge of Hancock County, OH. James was a blacksmith and machinist. Samuel and Franklin were teachers, then operated a dry goods store together. Franklin later operated a newspaper in Arlington, OH.
I want to share information with others researching the Bitler family. The Bitler's of Berks and Schuylkill counties in Pennsylvania were established by John (Johannes) Bitler, who likely arrived in 1736 on the Ship Harle. My research focuses on grandson Daniel Bitler and his family who founded St. Johns, Clay Township in Auglaize County, Ohio in 1834. Descendants William and Arthur Bitler were prominent members of that community; Daniel Bitler Jr. went on to establish a Bitler settlement in Kansas.

Vol. 3 of Marrriage and Death Notices in Columbia County (PA) newspapers lists the marriage of Maria Bitler, Catawissa, to James Scott McNinch, of Pottsgrove, on Mar 17, 1857. The publication date was Mar 05, 1917, apparently on their 50th aniversary.
When the Columbia Democrat published the marriage notice on 21 Mar 1857, it listed her as Mary J. Bitler. This is indexed in Vol. 1 of the Marriages and Death Notices.
It is my understanding the indicies were prepared by the Columbia Co. (PA) Historical Society.

Mary Smith BITLER m. James McNINCH circa 1860

Looking for any information about the marriage of Mary Smith BITLER to James McNINCH. I found an undocumented reference to it recently.

It also listed a daughter, Elizabeth James McNINCH m. Thomas F. GADEN in Riley, Co, KS in 1884. They are enumerated in Seiling, Dewey Co, OK in 1930, both born in PA. They are both buried in Brumfield Cemetery in Dewey Co, OK.

The McNINCH family name apears in the biographies of Columbia and Montour County (Battle, 1887), listing a James McNinch in Kansas. The connection to the BITLER family probably originated in this area.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated. If I can connect Mary Smith BITLER to the tree, it opens up a whole new branch.

Glenn S.
Charlotte Bitler and Mary Ann Yetter were cousins. Charlotte was the daughter of Samuel Bitler b. November 16, 1788 in Berks Co., PA d. August 14, 1872 and Catherine. I do not have any information about Catherine but she is mentioned in the will of Samuel Bitler. Charlotte is also named in that will as deceased. She died October 23,1865 in Kirksville, Adair Co., MO. The will refers to her heirs.
Samuel Bitler's will corrects a lot of previous errors in Bitler genealogy.

Bitler

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 30
for Sister of Charity Mary Joaquin Bitler, 81,
at the Sisters of Charity motherhouse in Delhi
Township. She died May 26 in Mother Margaret
Hall nursing home in Cincinnati.

A native of Wapakoneta, she entered the congregation
in 1943. She graduated from Good Samaritan School of
Nursing in Dayton in 1947 and worked at the hospital
until 1951, when she went to the Southwest. She earned
a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the College of
Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati and a master’s in
hospital administration from Notre Dame University
in Indiana.

She served briefly as director of nursing services
at St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe, N.M., before
moving to a hospital in Pueblo, Colo. In 1960,
she returned to St. Vincent Hospital as administrator
until 1977. She then realized her dream of working
for the foreign missions by moving to the village of
Guanajuato, Mexico, where she worked in a small
clinic providing health care to the villagers and
raising money for a bridge and a well. She moved to
the monastery in Abiquiu, N.M., in 1988, returning
to the motherhouse in Cincinnati in 2001.

- - - - - - - - - -
The only connection I can make is it appears this may be the daughter of Milo and Therasa Bitler, listed on the 1930 Census in Wapakoneta (T626_1752-0642, Sheet 3-B, Line 88) as "Rita" age 7. This would be plausible given that Theresa was born in Michigan to Italian parents. If anyone has other information on Milo and his family, I would be very interested.

I too attempted to contact Hower Bitler before checking here to learn he is deceased.
I have a letter written by Charlotte Ammerman dated March 29th 1846 in Amanda, Oh to Maryann Yetter in Catawissa, PA whom she addresses as cousin. (Maryann's brother, Samuel B. Yetter, married the sister, Rebecca Campbell, of my g-g-grandfather, Amos Campbell. I understand the parents of Maryann and Samuel were Daniel Yetter and Sarah Bitler.) According to the information on Hower's site, a Charlotte Bitler married William Oliver Ammerman. And in Charlotte's letter she mentions their children, Isadore, Edward Porter and Alonzo Bitler so am sure we are together at that point. But I did not find anything on the site to indicate a Sarah Bitler marrying a Daniel Yetter. So I am trying to establish that relationship! Can anyone help me out in that area?
Thanks
Betty

Dayna, this I have. What I am trying to figure out is how Charlotte (who married William Ammerman) is related to Maryann Yetter. Hower Bitler indicated her last name was Bitler so wondered if she may be the daughter of one of Sarah Bitler's brothers (Samuel or Joseph?) maybe?
Betty
