Bitney family...

Hello,

I'm leaving in Quebec, Canada. I'm working on the "Bitney family" (Bétournay family in Quebec)... My great-great-grands-parents were André Marsil & Honorée Bétournay. They were married the october 9th, 1827, in Longueuil, co. Chambly, Quebec. André Marsil was the son of Michel Marsil & Elizabeth Trudeau. André had a sister named Catherine; she was born and christened the 9th of September 1805 in Longueuil co. Chambly, Quebec and married Charles Bétournay (Bitney for you)the February 12th, 1828, in Longueuil, co. Chambly. Catherine and Charles moved in the States. In 1880, Catherine was leaving at Elm Grove, Antelope, Nebraska... In some family trees on this website, I read that she died the 5th of May 1887 in O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska... Can it's possible to get the proof, the document in support? And do you know when and where, Charles, her husband, died? Thanks a lot... Sorry for my english.

Hello Carolyn,

I would love to hear more about John Bitney's ancestry. Any information you are willing to provide would be greatly appreciated.

My family and I live in Woodinville, WA. The last address I had for Louis was in Omaha, NE. I assumed as he got older he moved off the farm and into town. I do have a photograph of John if you desire.

Thank you,

Eric

Eric,
Thanks so much for all of the great information; my husband and I are stopping in Echo on our way south to move a daughter back to WA; I will take pictures of both their graves to post on-line. The information about his brother being Louis of Antelope Co., NE tells me exactly what family he is from. I have kept track of all of the Bitneys because there are so many of them and almost all are related. When you are home, I would be happy to send you the information about the families and where they are from in Quebec if you are interested.
Thank you again!
Carolyn Peterson

Hello Carolyn,

Thank you for writing. John Bitney has been difficult for me to find much information regarding his lineage. He was born in Franklin County, New York; more specifically in Bangor, New York. He married Eliza Jane Guild in Wheaton, Illinois and they made their way West from there. They spent some time in Ruby Valley, Montana and eventually ended up in Umatilla County, Oregon.

John Bitney and Eliza Jane Guild Bitney are buried in the Echo Memorial Cemetery, in Echo, Oregon. You can find information and a photo of John's grave marker at findagrave.com. I called the cemetery and spoke to the groundskeeper. He looked at the burial records for John Bitney and saw that he had a brother listed on the records as being Louis Bitney from Antelope, Nebraska.

The marriage record you found for John and Eliza is correct. They had a total of 7 live births with only three surviving beyond 20 years old. The surviving children were Walter Bitney, Maude Bitney (Manion), and Rose Bitney (Temple). Maude was my great grandmother.

Regarding John Bitney being born in Bangor, New York, this was taken from John's bible and written in his own hand. I have no information regarding his ancestry.

If you have any other questions, please let me know. I am on vacation and my records are at home. It was a pleasure to hear from you.

Best regards,

Eric Daviscourt
John Bitney

Eric,
How amazing! I have been researching John Bitney four a number of years, almost as long as I have been a member of ancestry.com! I found your query via google! My main goal was to connect John to the many Bitneys -- I am very interested in the fact that you believe he was from Bangor, NY -- my ancestors are linked to Peter Bitney/Pierre Betourne from Quebec who came with brothers Charles and Louis to the US in the early 1840s. Two of the families lived in Bangor along with an Alfred Bitney who died there living a family who had a John (though records indicate that he never married and is buried there). That means that your John could be the son of one of the others. I have lately been trying to reread the French records in Quebec to see if I missed a child! I am heading to Umatilla County in a couple of weeks so have been searching for the burial site for John and Eliza Bitney -- and thus found your information. Earlier today, I sent a request into the IL archives for the marriage license for John and Eliza; online it says they were married on 3 Oct 1855 in JoDaviess County, IL. Is Wheaton there? Hope you are still doing research!
Carolyn Peterson

I have his 1900 census and he is listed as Bitney with his children so the change was bettwn 1900 and 1910 but can't pin down more.
Keith

I doubt this will ever reach you since your posting was 8 years ago but My great grandfater was William vincent also.
I have wondered about the name change also and have heard things like he changed it because of WWi or that his uncle Napolean changed it and everyone else followed but none of those theory have made since according to my research. I show William BItney listed on the 1900 census and then they are in Ct as Vincents. If you get this I would love to hear more
Keith

Hi all. Cousin Kymm in CA gave me this site. I am finding it very interesting reading on family history, and seems we are all cousins on here. I'm Terry Spencer-Smith, daughter of Phoebe Vincent Spencer. Grandmother Mary Korab, married Leo Vincent. Barbara Warren (Vincent) was my mothers sister, and there's a brother, still living, Roger Vincent.
I don't know a lot about the Vincents. We were away from Plainfield until I was 13. I did know Rosemary Vincent in high school, but we never became friends. I do remember my mother talking of Marcelline and also the tragic train wreck, but don't remember details. Wish I could be more of a help. But would like to get to know all of you. Would love hearing from you. I'll check here often, but can also be reached at terryss16@hotmail.com.
I now live in Winchester, VA.
Hope to hear soon.
Terry

My mom (Barbara Vincent)didn't talk about her family much, unless Asked! I guess I never asked the right questions!? It wouldn't be unusual for her NOT, to talk about herself, though.
Thanks for the kind words Thomas.
Hi Keith. I'm Terry Spencer-Smith, originally from Plainfield, CT. You were writting at one time, to my Aunt Barbara, who has since passed. Her daughter sent me this site and I saw your comments. My grandfather was Leo Vincent and if my memory serves me correctly, he was on the Police force in Plainfield way back. He died before I was born. His wife, my grandmother was Mary Korab Vincent. My mother was Phoebe Vincent Spencer. She also has passed. I remember her talking about her cousin Marcelline all the time. My brother Jay Spencer is really into family roots and have forwarded him this site. He will probably be in touch as he still lives in Plainfield. I just felt the need to contact you, as I recognized all the names you mentioned. But not the Bitney. So it looks as if we are cousins. Please feel free to contact me anytime at terryss16@hotmail.com, and if I can, I will. But my brother I'm sure certainly will have more info for you.
Terry

Thank you to whomever sent that last message, talking about my mother (Barbara Vincent Warren) Sorry to say, that's about all the information we were able to get, before her passing September 29th 2005 of Cancer. My Hero..She will be missed! However her older brother Rodger Vincent lives in Brooklyn, CT. I have only seen him a few times in my life that I remember. I was able to go visit 2 times, in the last 6 yrs! I am going to send him this, in hope HE MAY BE ABLE to answer some of the questions posted here?! He was Joseph Vincents, Eldest & Only son. I believe he is in his early 80's, but doesn't look it! In good health too. I think he might know more than all of us?! SO thank you again, for writing a nice thing about my mom, Barbara. I hope my Uncle will be able to shed some more light on the situation's of the past & name change?! I will be watching, to see what information he will be able to add.
Hello. I am back after a long absence. The Bitney's of Vermont changed their surname to Vincent in New Hampshire on or near the year 1898. I have not found the cause. The previous generation in my family are all dead. What they told me before they died was incorrect information. I suspect they were lied to in order to protect the family from some scandal that occurred in Vermont. There are no military records for the Spanish-American war for either family name.

I did get excellent information from a Barbara Warren in CA on my great-grandmother Roselda Gowett (Spelling uncertain) who was the wife of William Bitney (Vincent). She was a cree earth mother and Barbara was kind enough to send me information on her.

Hi Keith Bohacik, we are distant cousins. I was told about great aunt marcelline. She married someone and moved to New York. My godmother, Ozina Rochelleau, used to visit her in New York State when she was a child. Ozina was my father's older sister.

I researched the train-car accident. It was a terrible tragedy.

I am decended through Charles and Catherine Bitney. I was confused with all the Bitney's but this clears things up. In the 1850 census Charles and Catherine lived in Hopkinton, St. Lawrence Co., New York. John Bitney married Esther Barcume. John had many siblings. John and Esther lived in Iowa for a time because in the 1870 census their son Charles was born in Iowa. Their daughter Flossie married Joseph Meindel and lived in Bloomer, WI. They were my Great Grandparents.

Donna,
You may have already discovered this since your message but I discovered the name of Julia's husband when searching on Google for Bitney's. They are buried together in the Develin Cemetery in Bangor, Franklin Co., NY. He is Alfred Bittney who was born around 1820 in Canada and died very young in 1859 -- just after their last child was born. I try to keep tabs on all of the Bitney families in the U.S. Since the other well established lines of the sons of Pierre Vincent Betourne of Quebec already have Alfred's, this Alfred is either a very young son of Pierre Vincent or possibly the son of the brother/son Joseph who remained, as far as I know, in Quebec. Alfred joins John Bitney (b. abt 1815) of VT as the two Bitney's who are NOT connected directly to the rest of the very large clan! However, since they arrive in the U.S. about the same time as the others and have spelled their names similar (though sometimes differently in every census!) I am taking the educated guess that they are all of the same family.
I have also done research on the rest of your family, probably starting with the family Bible (?) that you had photos of on-line. I am more than willing to share whatever I can to help the cause of connection!
Carolyn Peterson

Hi Barbara
My grandmother was Delia Vincent born in 1889. Leo was somewhere around the 10th or 11 child born to William Bitney. There is a family mystery here that has been the subject of speculation and rumon about how Bitney became Vincent. I have traced this line on William bitney's side awhile and found no real reason. The speculation was his father changed it in the civil war but that proved incorrect. The next speculation was he changed it for the Spanish American War. I have researched that found it incorrect. The ability to exchange for money one person for another ended during the civil war. What you might find interesting on that part is John Bitney, Williams father was sent to New York to fight the Irish riots who were protesting just that thing.
The spanish american war was just a short war and there were no shortage of those wanting to go in and win some medals and glory before it ended so it was actually a war with its share of volunteers.
John Bitney, Williams father fought in the civil war and died at the battle of Cedar creek. His to brothers in law's (John married Sophia Master(s) Franklin, William and Joseph joined him in joining up and Franklin and Joseph served with him in the 6th Vermont Infantry. Franklin survived the war and Joseph died at Andersonville prison in GA.
John Bitney had a number of brothers including Flavious, Napoleon, and Peter and a number of children including William Napoleon Bitney, Victor, Frank, Felix, Leo, Charles, Delia, Alfred (Fred) Maryann, Jennie, etc. (whose mother was Rosella Gouette).
William N was the Plainfield sheriff for many years and my grandmother Delia was killed in a train accident along with my grandfather Parley William Phillips and delia's sister Jenny. I do have pictures of the whole Vincent clan at a wedding in 1917.
Would be happy to share
Keith
I do have pic

Hi Keith, I was born in 1935 and am a generation older than most of you that are doing the research on the Vincent/Bitney line. My Father was Leo Vincent, born in 1900 and I believe the 3rd or fourth youngest of the children.

Bebe (or Marcelline) was the youngest (lived in NY state), Minnow (or Henry) next and then my father Leo and Fred. Plainfield was just full of Vincents until the 1940s when the older folks started dying and their children and grandchildren moved away.

Wish I had paid more attention while growing up so I could be of help now! But I would love to be included in the messages and possibly find out how the Bitneys became Vincents.

Barbara Vincent Warren

Hi Carolyn
I Know its been awhile since you posted to the message board for Bitney Vincent but I have been researching and have a cousin who has information on the Bitney Vincent side of the family. There are a few holes in my research and I know there was a David C Vincent and Sandy Spring that have been dooing research but their posts to this site are over 2 years old and I would like to find someone who can hook me up. What is your relationship to the Bitney Vincent name.
I am the grandson of Delia Bitney Vincent and Byron William Phillips who were killed in the accident. My aunt Marcelline was the youngest of Delia and Byron and still alive and she filled me in on some history but she was young. I have heard the Civil War/Spanish American War thing also and have not found anything including searching for a list of those who fought in the Spanish American War as well.
If you get this please contact me at Genealogy40@hotmail.com
Sincerely
Keith Bohacik
St Louis MO

John Bitney

I am looking for information on my great-great grandfather, John Bitney. According to census records, he was born about April 1835 in New York or Canada. Family records show that John was from Bangor, New York.

On 5 October 1855 John Bitney married Eliza Jane Guild in Wheaton, Illinois.
Marshall Bitney

I have several 8mm films and some black and white pictures that were in a portable storage shed I bought in Oklahoma. There is some paperwork in the case with them that is dated 1961 and 1962. It also has the name Marshall Bitney and the address 4892 S. 50th, Ave., Omaha Nebr. on it. If someone believes that they are related to Marshall Bitney, get in touch with me.

Thank you for the information. The rumor on my branch of the family tree about John Bitney going to war for someone else is in contradiction to the facts I have assimilated. The family name change took place during the Spanish-American War, but I could not find any relative to went.

John Bitney was my great-great grandfather through his son William through his son Frank through his son Henry.

Thank you again.

I am also a descendent of the Bitneys, through Joseph Compeau. I would be very interested in any information you have about both sides.
