Hi,

My name is Emily Bittenbender and I to am a direct decendant of Conrad Bittenbender. I am at work and do not have my files with me but I will dust them off and write you back. I have a family tree that traces our linage back to him. I grew up not far from where Conrad and his family settled in Huntington Mills, just outside of Shickshinny. One of my ancestors, can't remember his name without my files, was murdered on the street of Plymouth, PA by a drunk and disgruntled janitor of the local school. He was murdered in broad daylight apparently in his buggy. I have the newspaper clipping of the incident.

Feel free to contact me at emily@bittenbenderconstruction.com, I think we can help each other.

I'm looking for any information on my great grand-uncle. Ben was a painter associated with the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts' Chester School in the 1920s. He was born in Nescopeck in 1891 and died in or near McAlisterville in 1971. Connect with me ( nolapoet ) for some B&W images of his work I found via Google Books. I am particularly interested in where he might be buried and in any stories or photos relatives might be able to provide. Thanks in advance.

I am researching this name and various spellings of it. Can anyone tell me who their ancestor's were and where they were from? Mine was Johannes Heinrich Bedenbender (now spelled this way but in census records spelled always differently) born 1808 in Fellerdilln, Germany. He married Anna Elisabeth Triesch born 1811 in Manderbach, Germany. They came to the US around 1850-1851. I am trying to see if his siblings may have came here too and had their surname changed. Thanks, Kelley.

John's father was Jacob (b. 30 July 1815)whose father was also Jacob (b. 03 June 1791).

Hey,
I too, am related to John Conrad Bittenbender. In fact, I live in Hamilton Township PA, where he lived. He's buried at Christ Hamilton Lutheran Church, a few miles from my house. There is a plaque affixed on the gate to the cemetery, purchased by my great grandmother, Henrietta Walters Hobbs,( born 1890, mother, Emma Bittenbender) with her name and the names of my grandmother and two great uncles, listing our direct lineage to Conrad Bittenbender. I don't know it off the top of my head, I think I'l drive down in a bit to look it over.
Also, the murder story is Etna Bittenbender, daughter of Samuel and Margaret Bittenbender. She is buried in Mt Zion cemetery, near Sciota PA. She was killed in the woods right near where I live in Hamilton Township by a person unknown on Halloween, 1880. A relation of mine, Emma Hobbs, who, in 1890 lived in the house I currently reside was one of the last people to see her alive. According to my grandmother, we are not directly related to her, therefore, she and Conrad are not of the same line. There are so many Bittenbenders out here it's outrageous. Though I suppose they must all have come from the same place?
I've never heard the Mark Twain thing, though I would love if it were true!
I am terribly interested in your photo of Oscar Bittenbender. I believe it to be Oswin Bittenbender, who was my grandfather's father. My mother's father was Ralph W. Bittenbender, born in 1896 and his father was Oswin Bittenbender who lived in Upper Milford, Lehigh Co. His old house is now in disrepair, but it still stands down the road from St. Peter's church--the official address is Alburtis, but is more along the Macungie border. Could you please email a copy of this to me--I would be thrilled? How did you find it? There were no Oscar Bittenbenders in our family, but I would almost be 100% sure it's a photo of Oswin--are you a relative? What other photos are there? I will be anxious to see the photo--you can contact me directly at phersonk@aol.com. Thanks so much, Kitty.

Betsy: Re. Bittenbender family history, I have quite a bit of info on the Bittenbender family--most all of what was given to the World Tree has been verified and posted by me many years ago; I have been working on the family name for over 25 years now and think I can help you. I am away from home at the moment, but I believe I can tell you proof of Anna Elizabeth Bittenbender from my notes when I get home--John Conrad Bittenbender came from the area aroudn Pfaltz, Germany (now France) near the Alsace region and border of France/Germany. There are passenger ship records of Bittenbender arrivals in (offhand I think) abt. 1738 & 1741--they came into the Port of Philadelphia from Rotterdam after they journey from Cowes, England and sailing down the Rhine River from their homeland.

We need proofs of the parents of Anna Elizabeth. Is she the daughter of Johannes Bittenbender b. 1725 in PA? Is her mother Juliana? Is there a Bittenbender Family History? This information is needed for DAR membership. We believe Anna Elizabeth is a granddaughter of Jacob Bittenbender who served in the Revolution. Jacob b. 1752 Northampton co., PA, d. 1844 in Luzerne co., PA. His wife was Dorothy X. His son was John who married Magdalena Krum. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you! betsybutler@cox.net

Hi - I'm related to John Conrad Bittenbender - Born 1716 Palatinale germany AKA: Conrad Bittenbender - came to US on Saint Andrews from Palatine(Platz) landed in Philadelphia, PA on October 27, 1738 with 300 passengers. His estate was settled between 1773 and 1777. We found the incident of the Indian Raid in Pennsylvania Archives under Chapter of Frontier Forts, Volume 1 Page 238 of the account of his death. Killed by Indians on 2 May 1757 (I have the court documents regarding the raid). He was my Great Great Great Grandfather. I come from his direct line.

son Conrad Bittenbender -Feb 1809-8/5/1899 - Married Lavina Bittenbender Knorr) (My Great Great Grandfather)

Their Son John K. Bittebneder 6/4/1854 Married 1/27/1881 to Alvaretta Bittenbender (Kuhn) 1/25/1957 - 1/27/1919 Born Bloomsburg, PA (My Great Grandfather)

Their Son (John Howard Bittenbender - Federal Judge Bittenbender) 6/25/1892 (My Grandfather) Married Coma Russel Bittenbender (Alford) 5/14/1899 - Born in Nashville, TN

Then my Mother (Margaret Elizabeth Bittenbender) Born 7/5/1934 - 3 Children:
Craig Hayes
Curtis Hampton
Leslie Hampton Lash

I can look up some of my informaiton on brothers, etc if anyone is looking for something. I can't find anything on my Grandmothers (the women who married to Bittenbender - line above) If anyone has anything would appreciate it.

I was always told by my mother that we were related to Mark Twain on the Bittenbender Side - I can't find how ? Anyone else know about this connection.

I also found a story about a "haunted" Bittenbender Property and a murder in PA - not sure if it the same line or not - but the names sound like it could be.

I know my dad lived in Scranton when he was a child and moved to the Abington area. I have no clue about my relatives except for the ones still living. I do know my grandfather flew on a bomber in WWII, I have a pic of him from that ERA. I do know there are only adult boys left from this branch of the Bittenbender family.
The BITTENBENDER/FEDEROLF Cemetery is located near the village of Seisholtzville, Berks County, PA. To get there from Boyertown, PA you will need to travel North on Rt. 10 to the traffic light at Rt. 29 in Hereford, PA. Then turn left and travel for approximately 4 miles toi the village of Seisholtzville and ask for directions. The cemetery is NOT taken care of very well !!

Hi, Judy

Johan Conrad Bittenbender was born abt. 1716 in Pfalzburg, The Palatinate, in what is now southern Germany. He arrived as an immigrant at the Port of Philadelphia and took the Oath of Allegiance there on 27 Oct. 1738.
Johan Conrad had two brothers and a sister who also came to PA later: Ann Margaretha (b.1718) arrived in PA with one of her other two brothers; Christophel (b.1721) arrived 11 Dec 1744; Johannes (b.1724/25) arrived 16 Sep 1748.

If you need more info, I have some, and "Kat in VA," a regular poster on this board, has shared a lot.
