JESSE JOHN OR JOHN BITTING

My grandfather, Jesse John Bitting, was born in Philly (I believe)in 1900. We believe his father was John Bitting. John was a commercial artist. He and his wife were killed sometime when my grandfather was a young boy (between 1900 and about 1915). I don't know if they had any other children. He was orphaned and went to live with an aunt in Philly until he was 16 when he ran away, falsified his age, and joined the Army in WWI. If you have any info re: this strain of Bittings, please let me know. I can't find any birth records or census with my grandfather in them. I can't find any death records of my great grand parents either.

Hello!

My Paternal Grandmother was Lois Deborah Bitting. She had a brother named "Tick". She married Chester Lee Pierce in California when she was 15. Her family moved to California from Nebraska, when she was a child. There was another brother named Ralph Bitting. I don't know if there is a connection there but, it was worth a try.
Thanks,
Cindy

Hello Richard

Those were the only details I received from Coesfeld, I'm afraid.

No other connections found to German ancestors either at this point, although I have traced our lineage back to a marriage of Joseph and Frances Bitting in England. Joseph was born c1748.

As I said in a previous thread, the name must be established even further back than that in Enland, as I have located the marriage of 'Ann Bitting' in 1685 in Hertfordshire.

Am currently in the process of trying to link the Newcastle (England) Bittings to my own tree, but it's a lengthy business as I'm sure you're aware.

I'll post more details as and when I have concrete information. Thank you for getting in touch, and I hope to hear from you again soon.

Regards

Beverley

Beverley,

Thanks for posting this information. A possible Romany origin of the Bitting name is an interesting theory. Can you provide any further details? Is ‘Bitting’ an actual word in this language, and is there any thing else that suggests that this might be the source? I am more inclined to think there is a less exotic source for the name. After all there are a number of similar sounding names that can be found in the Northwest German region. But who knows?

Have you been able to connect the English Bitting family to its German origins?

Rich Bitting
Further to my last message, I have been able to contact a 'Bitting' member in Stadt Coesfeld, Germany.

They have provided me with information that the name 'Bitting' comes from the language of the Romany Gypsies, and means 'pauper' or 'beggar'.

If anyone has any further information about the origin of the surname (further to what is already on Rich Bitting's site), please contact me.

Bitting Family in England

I am the great great great granddaughter of Joseph Bitting, born in 1798 in Spalding Lincolnshire, as mentioned in the home page of the 'Bitting' History' website.

Further to other details held on the site concerning the origins of the Bitting surname in England and Germany, I would like to offer the folowing information.

I have come across a parish record in England, dated 1685 in which an "Ann Bitting" married "Thomas Adams". Unfortunately, there are no other links with regards to her parentage, however, this does indicate that the name existed in England during the 17th Century.

Also, the name 'Bitting' still lives on in Germany, particulary in and around 'Stadt Coesfeld', where there are 4 Bittings listed in the telephone directory. I have also come across at least two Bittings in Germany who are football players for regional teams.

If any one has any further information on the origins of the surname in England, please contact me.

Regards.

Information on Kenneth and Lorraine Bitting

In 1967, when I was attending a high school in Guam, I was sponsored by a US Naval personnel family, Kenneth and Lorraine Bitting. Shortly after I completed my first year, the island, Bonin Islands, where I was borned was returned to Japan and since then have lost contact with the Bittings. I did received a letter from them but the letter I sent to Nebraska was returned. They had a daughter, Joan, who was about 3 at the time and I am sure they had a son shortly after. I was never able to thank them for what they have done for me. I am certain that the Kenneth (died 1985) and Lorraine on the Bitting Family list is the couple I am looking. Any information on the couple or their children is appreciated.
I estimate that the photo was taken circa 1850 to 1900. I would like to send a copy of the photo and learn about Will.

Ref: Town and Country Newspaper
Pennsburg, Montgomery County, PA
Saturday - September 5, 1903

GOLDEN WEDDING

Mr. and Mrs. Levi BITTING of Pennsburg, will today celebrate their golden
wedding anniversary at their home on Main street. On September 3rd, 1853 at 5
o'clock the late Rev. Daniel WEISER, of East Greenville, performed the ceremony
which made Levi BITTING, of Pennsburg, and Miss Louisa HANGER, of Milford
township, man and wife. The couple started housekeeping at Pennsburg and have since
been residents here. Mr. BITTING was born in this village. The couple were
blessed with eight children, two of whom have died. The living children are,
Jane, wife of John KRAUSS, and Jacob, both of Philadelphia; John, of Red Hill;
Jefferson and Martha, wife of John F. WEYAND, both of Pennsburg, and Joseph, of
Allentown. The age of Mr. BITTING is 77 years and that of Mrs. BITTING is 76
years. Both are hale and hearty and one would not judge them older than about
sixty years. About fifty invitations were sent out to the relatives of Mr. and
Mrs. BITTING and a large gathering is expected.
