Glenn Bitting

I am the daughter from the first marriage of a Glenn Bitting, who died in the Philippines. I have been able to gather some information on my father through the help and memory of my brother,Thurman Leo Bitting and my own searches in association with http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bitting/. I would be interested in any information or jpegs of my father and his family, immediate or distant.

I don't quite remember what my father looks like, though my mum was able to maintain a scant few pictures. They were faded and distant, like looking at someone I could know if I squint my eyes. I'm an adult now, nearing 40 and as I grow closer to the end of this chapter of my life, I feel I need to have a better connection to my father. One who died before I was able to do so on my own. I don't expect to find his life story scattered somewhere along this web or these forums. I'm just interested in a photo, a jpeg, what his favorite book or music might habe been.. I know I have other siblings out there and sometime in the future I may wish to meet them, but right now I'm just interested in any sort of tibbit on what my father was like or who he might have been.

I'd like more than a chilldhood memory, something more I could remember my father on and share with those in my life who want to know about me and my family.

The only memory that stands out in my mind is sitting on his workbench, at the age of two or maybe three, as he tried, "Tried" to fix something and the entire room smelling of sawdust and gasoline... and his laugh, not particularly hearty but comforting echoed inside the room...

I'm interested in obtaining any sort of visual information or just simple stories of my father. I am open to emailing other relatives and siblings in the future, but at this time I want to explore a connection with my father, myself and his history.

Bitting Name - Origin

Further to my last message, I have been able to contact a 'Bitting' member in Stadt Coesfeld, Germany.

They have provided me with information that the name 'Bitting' comes from the language of the Romany Gypsies, and means 'pauper' or 'beggar'.

If anyone has any further information about the origin of the surname (further to what is already on Rich Bitting's site), please contact me.

Bitting Family in England

I am the great great great granddaughter of Joseph Bitting, born in 1798 in Spalding Lincolnshire, as mentioned in the home page of the 'Bitting' History' website.

Further to other details held on the site concerning the origins of the Bitting surname in England and Germany, I would like to offer the folowing information.

I have come across a parish record in England, dated 1685 in which an "Ann Bitting" married "Thomas Adams". Unfortunately, there are no other links with regards to her parentage, however, this does indicate that the name existed in England during the 17th Century.

Also, the name 'Bitting' still lives on in Germany, particulary in and around 'Stadt Coesfeld', where there are 4 Bittings listed in the telephone directory. I have also come across at least two Bittings in Germany who are football players for regional teams.

If any one has any further information on the origins of the surname in England, please contact me.

Regards.

Married: Francis C. Bitting to Mame Rose, June 1895, Pennsylvania

NOTE: I came across this wedding announcement while hunting for an obit, in my role as the RootsWeb obituary volunteer for the Allentown Morning Call newspaper. I am NOT researching this family.

This article was printed in:
The Allentown Morning Call
Allentown, Pennsylvania
Wednesday, June 12 1895

Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock Mame, the daughter of Mrs. Susan Rose, formerly of this city, was married to Francis C. Bitting, Superintendent of Union News Company, located at Birmingham, Ala., at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Mosteller, at Slatington. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. S. Erb in the presence of members of the families, and quite a number of friends were present. The bride was dressed in an elegant cream silk dress, and the groom in a fine broadcloth suit. The bridesmaid was Miss Jennie M. Derr, and the groomsman was George H. Mosteller. The bride and groom stood before an arch of flowers as their words of promise passed their lips. After the ceremony an elegant repast was served, after which Mr. and Mrs. Bitting departed on the 5.15 south bound train to Birmingham, where they will spend their honeymoon. They were the recipients of a number of useful and valuable presents.

Information on Kenneth and Lorraine Bitting

In 1967, when I was attending a high school in Guam, I was sponsored by a US Naval personnel family, Kenneth and Lorraine Bitting. Shortly after I completed my first year, the island, Bonin Islands, where I was borned was returned to Japan and since then have lost contact with the Bittings. I did received a letter from them but the letter I sent to Nebraska was returned. They had a daughter, Joan, who was about 3 at the time and I am sure they had a son shortly after. I was never able to thank them for what they have done for me. I am certain that the Kenneth (died 1985) and Lorraine on the Bitting Family list is the couple I am looking. Any information on the couple or their children is appreciated.
Ref: Town and Country Newspaper
Pennsburg, Montgomery County, PA
Saturday - September 5, 1903

GOLDEN WEDDING

Mr. and Mrs. Levi BITTING of Pennsburg, will today celebrate their golden
wedding anniversary at their home on Main street. On September 3rd, 1853 at 5
o'clock the late Rev. Daniel WEISER, of East Greenville, performed the ceremony
which made Levi BITTING, of Pennsburg, and Miss Louisa HANGER, of Milford
township, man and wife. The couple started housekeeping at Pennsburg and have since
been residents here. Mr. BITTING was born in this village. The couple were
blessed with eight children, two of whom have died. The living children are,
Jane, wife of John KRAUSS, and Jacob, both of Philadelphia; John, of Red Hill;
Jefferson and Martha, wife of John F. WEYAND, both of Pennsburg, and Joseph, of
Allentown. The age of Mr. BITTING is 77 years and that of Mrs. BITTING is 76
years. Both are hale and hearty and one would not judge them older than about
sixty years. About fifty invitations were sent out to the relatives of Mr. and
Mrs. BITTING and a large gathering is expected.
Bitting/Stahle

We are related to Franklin Bitting (born 16 March 1822 in Reading, PA and died 5 April 1901 in Carlistle, PA) and Mary Margaret Stahle (born 1839 and died 1916). They were married on 16 March 1822 in Reading PA. Any information you can give on this couple, especially Mary Margaret's exact date and place of birth and death, parents, church where married, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks for your help!

I have a photo of Will Bitting in an old album of Lutz and Whittle families. The photographer was Edmond D. Jeanes, 716 Hamilton St., Allentown, PA. I estimate that the photo was taken circa 1850 to 1900. I would like to send a copy of the photo and learn about Will.

I need help finding my greatgrandfather

My name is Courtney Anne Bitting born 3/20/77. My father is John Francis Bitting born 8/15/41 to John Stewart Bitting born 2/17/04 and Kathleen Mary Bitting nee Maher. My grandfather had one brother, Frank. I know little more than these facts about my great-grandfather. He apparently abondoned my great-grandmother after her two children were born. My grandfather would never speak about him. If you can shed light on this family mystery I will be very grateful.
